I called this place trying to get a ballpark estimate for luxury vinyl tile. The woman I talked to couldn't be bothered. Clearly this place is not accustomed to trying to facilitate an order using the phone and internet. I was told I would have to physically visit the store. I did this and was given a rough estimate much beyond my budget. The assistant manger insisted I should allow their measurement person to come out. It was a complete waste of everyone's time. I did receive a written bid. I ended up buying the product through a flooring store without having to make a preliminary visit. The product i purchased was the same grade as the one bid by this place but was 70% less costly. Do your homework and comparison shop!!! There are much better places around Chicago to do business with. read more

I went to the store to look at samples and book an appointment for getting a quote. I worked with Mark who was easy to work with in getting an initial quote done but then when I got to the store he was a bit pushy and presumptuous. To be honest, that didn't bother me as much and I wouldn't have written a review on just that but when it came to the quote appointment the contractor did not show up or call to let me know he was running late or not coming at all. I don't live in the unit so I had to leave work to be at the unit during the scheduled time and I emailed Mark after 30 minutes asking what the status was and I didn't get a response until 2 hours later and the response was "will call to reschedule". I didn't get an explanation, let alone an apology, for my time which was disregarded (and wasted). I responded that I didn't appreciate being stood up and that it seemed very unreliable. While I got another response, again it was all about rescheduling and "keeping the ball moving", still no explanation or apology. I wouldn't recommend them as they do not seem reliable, professional, or respectful of the customer. I also got another quote from another provider (who has better reviews on Yelp) and it was half the price I was offered at Home Carpet One (and the contractor was lovely to work with). I know my quote was just based on initial sq footage and "pre-discount" however I can't imagine that would swing it by half the amount. read more

I bought tile here for my home a few years ago. It's a deceptively large space and they have a lot of really nice tile.I was able to buy during their annual sale, so I saved a bit of money on some really pretty tile. I called back a little while after buying to see if I could purchase one more box to complete a nearby closet, and was told that the tile was discontinued, which was my own fault for not planning ahead. I can't give five stars just because of the variability on staff knowledge and helpfulness. I called again a few months ago to see if they could help me find a reasonable match to my old tile, and the guy on the phone was very helpful. The person I met in store basically just said, "Look around and see if you find anything." I went back again before their annual sale, when I had more time to look around for a match and was helped by an extremely helpful salesperson who checked some records for my discontinued tile. I was told that my original tile had been sitting in warehouse after it had been discontinued, but it was destroyed in a warehouse clean-out. She even recommended a few places I could go for a larger selection. The kicker is that the clean-out was after the first time I had called to find the extras, but the person I called hadn't checked there. The takeaway? Your experience here depends dramatically on the staff you encounter, and always get more, above and beyond overage, than you think you'll need! read more

A place for well-informed buyers only! We needed carpet for our new home and went to Home Carpet One based on prior reviews and purchased in August of 2015. Although we made it clear we had a 94 lbs dog, and 2 toddlers, we were advised and purchased a high-end wool carpet which would "last a lifetime." Unfortunately, this carpet stains when ANYTHING touches it, and can't be cleaned with anything other than water (or will stain further). In fact, a professional carpet cleaning service cleaned our carpet last month (in hopes of trying to get some of the stains up) but informed us that they are not permitted to use any cleaning solutions or stain removers on wool carpets because they all stain. Additionally, the wear pattern of this carpet seems quite excessive given that it has only been in place for 8-9 months. After doing some online investigation (and reading some of the FAQs on the Carpet One site), wool carpet was the absolutely worst carpet choice. Carpet One states on their own site that wool carpets have no wear or stain warranties. So why would they advise this purchase knowing our family needs. Given the cost associated with this purchase, I can only assume they were more interested in the sale, then making an informed recommendation that would best suit our needs, or the service after the sale. I have attempted to contact Home Carpet One to get guidance on options (perhaps there is an actual manufacturer defect in our carpet), but have yet to get a response. I would avoid this store unless you have extensive knowledge in exactly what you want/need, but don't count on knowledgeable recommendations that reflect your true needs or prompt service after the sale. Changed from 1 star to two after a visit from Home Carpet One's Repair Guy. ***UPDATE***: A repair person from Home Carpet One came to the house and confirmed that there were no manufacturer issues with the carpet, and advised us that all carpets will show stains. Also confirmed that Dyson vacuum use would void any warranty for this carpet. So the worlds most popular and effective vacuum can't be used in our home without voiding the warranty on our carpet. Again, in my opinion, we were guided to purchase the wrong carpet type for our needs. read more

I found Home Carpet One on Yelp. Rosie was the rep who assisted me in the store. I had a good idea of what I wanted and she led me through the thousands of carpet samples with ease to a number of choices that made my decision easy to make. She suggested that the measurer bring the sample board to see the color in the space. GOOD IDEA! The color that I thought was perfect was a bit off and I was able to choose a better choice. Both the measurer and the installers were prompt, courteous and professional (and neat!). The installers did an excellent job. I don't take this for granted since I once had a horrible experience in a previous condo. The carpet looks amazing and I am so happy with the end results. I also need some area rugs, but ended up getting those online. Home Carpet One is in the middle of a rehab in that area of their store and the selection is small. However, they had a great sale on the rugs they were clearing out for new merchandise, but it didn't fit my decor. read more

Recently purchased natural stone plus ceramic tile at HCO for our bathroom remodel and enjoyed the experience. Great selection and knowledgeable sales associates. Julia D P was very helpful, showing us numerous product options and offering good suggestions based on her experience. Follow-up communication after the sale was good and products were delivered on time. Cost of materials can quickly add up, so it pays to become an informed shopper. It helped that we purchased materials when a sale was going on. Would rate 5 stars were it not for the high cost of grout and grout boost at this store. I've never written a review before but my bad experience here motivates me to suggest to other consumers to look elsewhere. I asked for a quote for marble and they gave me two samples from two vendors with prices. When I asked (1/2 a week ago) if both choices would have enough for the job and be immediately available the saleswoman said yes. Today, when I called to order they said that it would be a two month wait for my first choice, and my second choice was "misquoted" and the price would be not $10.49 but $19.00 per square foot! plus a shipping charge. OUCH! talk about a bait and switch!! What a disappointment for me and for the contractor who was counting on a timely delivery. I would like to support small businesses but this is one time where the expectations of small business service did not match reality. read more

Considering the overall good Yelp score, and friendly, family-owned and operated vibe on the website, I thought I had found a good place. I was especially happy to see some consideration for landlords with regards to their particular needs in the carpet department. Since the website has a "free estimate" form, I filled it out to get a jump on the process. That was over 3 weeks ago, and I still haven't received a response. But hey, internet stuff happens, so I wasn't too put off by that. I still decided to check out the store. I arrived at the store relatively early, maybe 1/2 hour after opening, so I could hopefully beat any rush. The arrangement inside was... unique. All the salespeople (I assume they were salespeople) were set behind sort of imposing counters, arranged in a way that customers have to run a bit of a gauntlet. Anyway, I strolled through, and looked at every person on my way back to the carpet area. Not one looked up at me. Well, no problem. There was a guy in carpeting behind a regular desk, and I wrongly assumed he'd at least glance up. I browsed through the samples rather aimlessly, not sure where to begin, and a little shy to interrupt the friendly (?) insult-laden back-and-forth the carpet guy and his closest buddy were engaged in (that's welcoming /s). Again, I strolled around the store, getting a vibe (not the best one) from a bunch of folks. Although I was somewhat amused by the varying ways the employees avoided contact (deeply involved in whatever was on the computer screen, urgent texting, witty banter with other employee, one woman with her face buried in her hands - she looked so distraught I wanted to console her), ultimately I was disappointed at the lack of interaction. I figured that commissioned folks would show some interest, but... not so much. At that point, I had to challenge myself to just hang around to see how long it would take before I got some help; at this point it's about the principle. That turned out to be 25 minutes, since I walked in the door. Actually, 25 minutes was how long it took me to decide to go elsewhere. I slowly made my way back through the gauntlet without so much as a glance. Eh, que sera sera. I guess there should be some value to the one star rating though. The bonus is that I ended up finding a carpeting store closer to home, that not only spent a fair amount of time working to understand my situation and earn my business, but willingly negotiated pricing far below the prices I saw at Home Carpet One. read more

Home Carpet One is fantastic. I had decided to put wood floors in my bedrooms but unfortunately the wood in my living area was 11 years old. So I knew I was not going to be able to match but I wanted to at least get the same brand. Enter Home Carpet One. My sales person was great and very patient. When I found what I wanted but the only stock the manufacturer had left was the end of the overall stock, he worked with me to find a similar color. He understood what I was trying to achieve and helped me stay within my price point. The gentleman who took all the measurements was great and helped explain things. And the installer guy was especially awesome. He completed the work quickly and efficiently. My floors look beautiful and I cannot wait to finish up my overall project. I went to Carpet One after a flood ruined my wall to wall natural sissel carpeting upstairs. There, George helped me pick out simply beautiful carpeting, worked to give me a good price, then came to my place a second time to confirm measurements. It was early in the morning, and he arrived with Ann Sather cinnamon rolls. The crew that came to install was fast, courteous and professional. They stayed until 7pm to finish my very complex job including two long flights of stairs, one of which was floating. I could not have been happier with the carpeting. Then yesterday, a big tin of Carol's Cookies arrived via Fed Ex with their thanks for the business.! Really??? I love this company! read more

I purchased a custom size rug from Carpet One about two and a half years ago. About 8 months ago, I noticed the rug giving off an unusual chemical-like odor (imagine a set of old tires parked in your living room). Upon investigation, I further discovered the backing on the rug was crumbling and deteriorating. I contacted Carpet One for guidance on what might be done. I also sent photos of the deteriorated rug backing. After a two week investigation, the representative at Carpet One informed me that the manufacturer's one year warranty against defects no longer applied--the implication being that the manufacturer and Carpet One do not stand behind the products they create or sell. Very disappointing. Will look elsewhere for future flooring purchases. read more

I highly recommend Home Carpet One. They have a large selection of floor coverings including tiles of various types and vinyl sheets. We purchased a vinyl sheet floor covering that was a looselay product, meaning that it was placed over our existing kitchen floor covering and fastened under the molding. The man who did the work was named Mike and he was a true perfectionist. Through careful measurement, he was able to lay the floor in one piece which was truly an amazing feat. The floor looks beautiful and we've received many compliments on it. The sales person Bob was very knowledgeable and very patient; I came back several times to look at the samples and asked many questions and I never felt rushed or pressured to make a decision. read more

Getting three rooms of carpeting in a condo is potentially pretty stressful. But our overall experience with Home Carpet One in Lincoln Park was about as good as it gets for this type of project. The sales guy, Mark Gustin, was all business and helped us navigate through a very large inventory in a reasonable period of time. He knows this business, which expedited the sales end of the transaction - no checking with managers, staring at computers, etc. We placed the order during a big sale, but still, in was pretty efficient. Everybody else we dealt with - the measuring guy, the scheduler (Ben) and the installers (awesome), were on time, courteous, considerate of our time and did everything we hoped for and expected. And I think we got a pretty good deal, as we were expecting to pay more based on the recent experience of neighbors and friends. read more

I needed tiles for a bathroom upgrade I was doing to prepare to sell my condo. I wanted to do something that would be neutral enough but not totally boring. Mark at Home Carpet one showed me several options, including these wood-like ceramic tiles I had never seen before. I instantly knew those were the tiles for me! I avoided big chain stores because I knew I would need a lot of help as I have never done anything like this before. My insurance company recommended Home Carpet One when I needed a wood floor replaced after flood damage from a broken water heater. I opted to replace the wood flooring with ceramic tile and they were terrific. Tony R. was my sales rep; he was very responsive, came over to double-check the measurements and brought some beautiful tile samples like I'd never seen before. Their contractor laid the tile and did a marvelous job. He showed up on time and did the work like a real craftsman who cared about every detail to get the job done right. They stayed true to their estimate, even when they needed to use extra material due to some unanticipated work to level the floor and they had to trim the bottoms of several doors to fit above the slightly elevated new floor. My home looks great. I am very pleased with their work and their customer service and would highly recommend them for ceramic tile installation, since that's what I had done. I have used Home Carpet One to recarpet every square inch of my single family home over the past two years (including some areas more than once due to water damage). They have an excellent selection of reasonably priced carpets. Moreover, my salesperson (Mark Gustin) smartly pointed out a higher quality carpet than my original selections that they were able to offer me at a much cheaper price due to their large inventory holding. The measurement people always have come to my home exactly on time and were quick and efficient. The best part of my experience has been the quality of the installation. I have never been home for most of the prior work, but this most recent time I was around for a large portion of the job. It was originally thought to be a two day job, but the team made so much progress on Day 1 that they decided to stay late to finish up the job. By late I mean 9:30 p.m. and they didn't even break for dinner. They really worked diligently and did a great job moving furniture back and forth (including some very heavy pieces). The final product was flawless, and my total wasted carpet amounted to no more than a couple of tiny pieces good enough for floor mats. Overall, a very positive experience and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. read more
