Terrible and rude service. The hostess was rude and condescending to my whole party. Food is decent which is the only reason it's not 1 star. Will not be returning Update: the owner reached out on my comment here pretending to help make amends. I ended up emailing them my phone number and they just never got back to me. After 4 years at UD and a few good times here, what a miss. The restaurant was slammed for graduation weekend and I knew it. They called to confirm at 5pm for a 6pm reservation, so I cancelled. Then they charged $15 per head for the late cancellation, what?? We had a great experience at UD, so many excellent dining choices on Main Street. If you're heading here for your Blue Hen, move along. This kind of scam isn't what this community is about or supports. No, Sasha, you were slammed. You had someone call at 5pm for a 6pm reservation, not the day before as most establishments do, for a reason. I come here all the time, especially after shifts at my restaurant. The service is usually great; bartenders are nice and wait times are no problem. Last night, my co-workers and I came into Homegrown for a drink after working at our own restaurant all day (we understand the stress that comes with serving). My friend ordered 2 drinks, to which the blond male bartender said he needs 2 ID's to serve her 2 drinks. She thought he was joking and laughed, but my friend and I both immediately noticed the way he was speaking to her and it was not friendly at all. He kept that negativity through all 3 interactions and never apologized to my friend. About an hour later though,the bartender apologized to the man we were with, who was not part of that conversation and didn't fix any issue. The drink limit is fine, but Homegrown serves us multiple drinks to an order every time we go in so we asked for explanation. There would have been no issue if he had explained why, as we know holidays especially are tough, but he at first just said "he's not playing those games". I asked again, and he told us that he doesn't want to play "drinking roulette" or something along those lines. I said I don't know what that means. That's when he finally explained that all house drinks were doubles, which we didn't know, but he was treating us as if we were trying to play him. It was just so unnecessarily rude and weird when we didn't come at him any type of way. We come in at least twice a week, every week. I love this place and have never had any bad experience. I've seen this bartender before and idk if he was having a bad night, but he certainly put in work to make our night worse. It was just incredibly weird and awkward. To make matters worse, he was only rude to me and my 2 female friends. As I mentioned earlier, there was also 1 man there. Of course, he talked to the man (who had nothing to do with it) and apologized for his actions. You should have apologized to the people you were mean to, not the man. It was a pretty unfortunate experience. Of course ill be back, but hopefully with a different bartender. read more

I used to come here in college years ago and I am so glad they're still here!! They've changed the seating arrangement a bit, so it opens up the space more. They still have a cute patio and bar. Their cauliflower wings and Gardenator burger were delicious. The server was so considerate of my food allergies and preferences, so just know you are taken care of here. I am both plant-based and gluten free and ordering was a breeze. Substitutes were clearly labeled as options on the menu, so you don't have to ask and hope that they had them. We came here for lunch with my daughter, her room mate and her cousin. We got boneless wings, a Green Goddess sandwich, a full breakfast plate and a bowl of clam chowder. The chowder was delicious; Full of chunks of potato and clam. The breakfast was excellent and the Green Goddess sandwich was meh' as were the boneless wings. Our server was kind and attentive. The hot honey chicken sandwich was AMAZING. The Mac and cheese was flavorless, not even an abundance of s&p could save the blandness of the sauce. I've been here a few times over the years, most recently last week, and I've always been pleasantly surprised by their brunch. The restaurant doesn't look like anything fancy, but the outdoor porch is nice (we were even able to fit our stroller!) and the food is always delicious. The servers were friendly, brought our food out quickly, and checked on us often. The music was fun, it was an early 2000s vibe. We started with the crab fondue, which was delicious. I'd also highly recommend the mango Bellini. For our mains, I had the smoked salmon toast with a side of home fries and my husband had the breakfast burrito, which we also enjoyed. I hadn't been to homegrown in over 10 years so decided to try it again for a dinner with my sister. Went around 6 pm on a Saturday and it was not busy at all. We both ordered a beer which you can the QR code on the menu for (very cool to see new/seasonal brews) and our choice of the Mmm...OSA was very good! For an app we got the crabby fries and they came in a flower pot! Also so delicious and perfectly spiced. For dinner I got the Greek salad with falafel and my sister had the Peruvian chicken. Both were very nice sized portions and flavorful. I probably would skip the falafel though, I like mine to have a bit more spices. They had a blacked chicken option that sounded promising. It seems they also do happy hour so if you're in the area and want good brews and food this would be a solid choice. read more

While on the road traveling, we decided to stop for a bite to eat and this place looked interesting. When you first walk in, you get kind of a funky vibe which we liked. Unfortunately, since there was more travel ahead, I did not get a chance to try the libations, but they looked quite good. For food, I went with the Chicken Caesar Wrap. It was good. Met the need. Home Grown Cafe on Main Street, Newark, DE, is exactly what its name states - a locally owned and operated college town foodery and drinkery dedicated to providing quality and fresh approaches to restauranting for the people surrounding the University of Delaware. My son, a senior at the school majoring in engineering, chose to go there when I stopped to see him on a return trip from Virginia to Bucks County. While it wasn't overly crowded when we walked in around 5, it was very much so by the time we left 90 minutes later. We sat in a booth in view of the bar, and were served well by the competent attractive server. My son ordered the Cheesesteak Banh Mi with Sweet Potato Fries, while I was enticed by Fried Brussel Sprouts appetizer and Beet Salad. Everything was very good to excellent, with special mention to the Vietnamese sammy and beet salad. While I love Brussels, I found this iteration to be strong on the expected bitterness, but lacking a little sweetness via vinegar or dried fruit to offset the dominant flavor. Leftovers were bagged for later consumption by the young lad. Given the majority of less than sterling food options in Newark, Home Grown Cafe is a welcome high point for this university community. Just a shame I only made it here in my son's final year at UDel. read more

This was a favorite of mine when I went to school at UD so when I had a wedding to go to in Newark I knew I had to stop by. The Buffalo Cauliflower wings are so so good and such a great healthier alternative to traditional wings. It is also a very large portion so even though it is a bit pricey, it is certainly worth it for how much food you get. I also had the Cesar salad which was great as well! I had the local sausage plate. It was supposed to have three different types of sausage. Nope, three of the same. And absolutely devoid of flavor. The mustard on the side was the only source of flavor. Best described as a bland sausage casing stuffed with saw dust. First of all the service was very good. Our waiter was timely,responsive and did several check backs. Our food was good but disappointing. The Kennet Square mushroom soup was chuck full of excellent mushrooms but the base was pasty. It needed more sherry and liquids to live up to its name sake. The special appetizer marinated Salmon was spicy and tasty. Served three to a plate just like the regular order. The Falafel was tasty but could use more Tahini as it was a bit dry. The homemade pita should be bigger to contain the Felafel. Most disappointing were the chips. The first batch ( which was sent back) was burnt and dry. The second batch not much better. Ok so I recently visited for the first time since graduating UD in 2012. I'm so glad this is one of the few places to have survived on main st all of these years. When I used to eat here about 10 years ago, everyone undoubtedly knew that THE thing to get was the grilled cheese. If I may dust off my memory, the grilled cheese back in the day contained multiple cheeses with a tomato and pesto. It was incredible. Is safe to say the menu has changed since then and definitely for the better. It now contains CAULIFLOWER WINGS, FALAFEL, and numerous other enticing options that represent the vegetarian world nicely. The matriarch of the table ordered their garlic hummus which is topped with sweet potato puree (amazing) and accompanied by apples, carrots, broccoli, and pita. This was very much enjoyed by the entire table and a lovely start to the meal. I ordered the tofu banh mi which I was very pleased to see on the menu. The banh mi has a local flair with the bread being a hoagie instead of the traditional baguette. The sandwich includes three big fried tofu steaks, picked veggies jalapeño, cucumber and spicy aioli. This was DELICIOUS and satisfied my banh mi craving for a while. GF ordered the green goddess sandwich with avocado mash, Muenster cheese, sprout and shoot salad, tomato, arugula, green goddess dressing all on wheat bread. I sampled this and found it creamy and super tasty. I just asked GF for her thoughts and she replied, "it was orgasmic". GF's mom ordered the falafel wrap and reviews were good at the time. GF'S sister ordered the grilled cheese which I note has slightly changed. It still contains multiple cheeses (cheddar, Jack, parmesan, provolone, and feta with tomato and basil oil on thick-cut white bread. Only one half was eaten but the other half was taken home so I see that as a good sign. We had a very enjoyable meal at Homegrown during our homecoming in Delaware. read more

Food and drinks were solid. Got myself the classic burger and the burger meat was very juicy. My boyfriend also enjoyed the paella. This place has a lot of gluten free options on their menu, just remind the server because some items are not gluten free unless asked. My bf ( who has a gluten allergy ) ordered chili that had a gluten ingredient in it. Once brought up , the server was awesome and apologized and offered to fix the dish . My sister just moved into an apartment nearby and suggested we try this place for lunch. I had the smoking gun to drink and we shared the Tatchos. The drinks was nice and spicy and the tater tots were tasty. I would have liked a little more cheese and sour cream but personal preference I had the Grilled Cheese Sandwich and she had the Shrimp Fajita Tacos. My grilled cheese was tasty but I would have preferred a sharper cheese. The bread was so good and so we're the homemade chips. My sister said her tacos were delicious. Homegrown is a Newark staple. It's mostly good, but there's some lacking, mostly food wise. Crab dip was tasty, but the accoutrements were weird. Off color, bendy (not crunchy) celery and cauliflower, and the bread so toasted it was a cracker that shattered when you removed it from the loaf. The lamb belly was cold enough that my partner spit it out. They fixed it and it came back phenomenal. I got the smoked chicken sandwich which was also cold to room temp... the various components of the dish were at different temps. Room temp chicken with cold fried onion straws was weird and I didn't enjoy. The croque monsieur and the Caprese macaroni and cheese were both very good though. Will def do that again! The margarita was not fancy or good but great for $3 on Thursdays! The service will always be impeccable. I've never had a bad experience with that. The vibes are very laid back, nothing fancy here and that's just fine with me. I also love coming here late night for a nightcap. Good chats at the bar. read more

I actually remember when this restaurant was a small clothing store that specialized in hemp clothing. Over the years, especially since becoming Vegan, I have stopped in when visiting my parents. This most recent visit was the best yet. They seem to have a new chef that has elevated the menu especially the Vegan options. I had the brunch "egg" and "sausage" sandwich and I liked that they egg was housemade. The only downside was I wish the Vegan bread was as distinct as the croissant that the non-Vegan version of the sandwich comes on. My toddler had a grilled cheese that she enjoyed and my husband had the Bananas foster french toast (he is the non Vegan/Vegetarian in the family). Finally, I definitely say stop by and try this restaurant. It is locally owned and has 22 years of history. I know I will be back especially with this new chef. read more

I was able to get a 4:30 reservation for 15 people on a Saturday the week of with no issue except their largest table sits 10 so we had to split into 2 groups. I loved that the menu had something for everyone, even with our unique set of dietary preferences, and the service was great, even with a large group. The have a juice station set up so you are able to pick your drink or just drink champagne I try to come to Home grown once a season. They have great non-meat options as well. Tried Home Grown cafe for a late lunch after moving in our freshman. Very cool inside decor and artwork. The veggie burger is one of the best I've ever had- the lightly toasted brioche bun, sprouts, tomato and sauce all worked together (get the sweet potato fries-extra, but worth it). My son for the Cobb salad- delicious and fresh and husband got the falafel, which was flavorful, but a little "soft", not crunchy as typical falafel balls. Back when I was a student at UD, I used to love Home Grown for their bottomless brunch. It's been a few years since I graduated, but I was in the area last weekend and wanted to get some reliably good food, so I paid Home Grown a visit. I ordered the Loaded Potato Omelette and my boyfriend ordered the Wings and Pot of Crabby Fries. The omelette was delicious and had the perfect amount of cheese. My boyfriend is usually not a boneless wing fan, but he was raving about how much he loved the wings. We both really enjoyed the very generous serving of fries and cheesey, crab fondue in the pot of fries. Our server was very attentive and prompt, which I really appreciated as I feel that good service has been hard to come by lately. 13 fun loving quiet people were greeted at the door by an ignorant bouncer we'd never encountered before. He actually told us we we're not welcome. No explanation. We relocated our group and two is us returned to ask what the issue was. Both the bouncer and manager held their ground, while admitting others around us. There are at least 13 of us and all of our fire committed to seeing them fail at this point. Unprofessional. read more
