    Indoor seating
    Milena H.

I used to come here in college years ago and I am so glad they're still here!! They've changed the seating arrangement a bit, so it opens up the space more. They still have a cute patio and bar. Their cauliflower wings and Gardenator burger were delicious. The server was so considerate of my food allergies and preferences, so just know you are taken care of here. I am both plant-based and gluten free and ordering was a breeze. Substitutes were clearly labeled as options on the menu, so you don't have to ask and hope that they had them. Plus, their art decor and yellow lighting makes for the indoor seating to be a pleasant experience. Can't wait to come back when I'm in town next - love you, Homegrown!

Our server was kind and attentive. The hot honey chicken sandwich was AMAZING. The Mac and cheese was flavorless, not even an abundance of s&p could save the blandness of the sauce. Apple salad was good but I wished the apples and Brie had been sliced more to make mixing and bite distribution better.

I hadn't been to homegrown in over 10 years so decided to try it again for a dinner with my sister. Went around 6 pm on a Saturday and it was not busy at all. We both ordered a beer which you can the QR code on the menu for (very cool to see new/seasonal brews) and our choice of the Mmm...OSA was very good! For an app we got the crabby fries and they came in a flower pot! Also so delicious and perfectly spiced. For dinner I got the Greek salad with falafel and my sister had the Peruvian chicken. Both were very nice sized portions and flavorful. I probably would skip the falafel though, I like mine to have a bit more spices. They had a blacked chicken option that sounded promising. It seems they also do happy hour so if you're in the area and want good brews and food this would be a solid choice.

Whenever I am in the area I always stop here to get a dinner. They have so many good options. I have gone too many of the restaurants in the area, but Home Grown is always consistent compared to others. The burgers are fantastic.

Bangin across many and all board. Just a good spot without fail. Crowd, food, service, location. All spot on

Home Grown Cafe on Main Street, Newark, DE, is exactly what its name states - a locally owned and operated college town foodery and drinkery dedicated to providing quality and fresh approaches to restauranting for the people surrounding the University of Delaware. My son, a senior at the school majoring in engineering, chose to go there when I stopped to see him on a return trip from Virginia to Bucks County. While it wasn't overly crowded when we walked in around 5, it was very much so by the time we left 90 minutes later. We sat in a booth in view of the bar, and were served well by the competent attractive server. My son ordered the Cheesesteak Banh Mi with Sweet Potato Fries, while I was enticed by Fried Brussel Sprouts appetizer and Beet Salad. Everything was very good to excellent, with special mention to the Vietnamese sammy and beet salad. While I love Brussels, I found this iteration to be strong on the expected bitterness, but lacking a little sweetness via vinegar or dried fruit to offset the dominant flavor. Leftovers were bagged for later consumption by the young lad. Given the majority of less than sterling food options in Newark, Home Grown Cafe is a welcome high point for this university community. Just a shame I only made it here in my son's final year at UDel.

    Buffalo Cauliflower Wings

This was a favorite of mine when I went to school at UD so when I had a wedding to go to in Newark I knew I had to stop by. The Buffalo Cauliflower wings are so so good and such a great healthier alternative to traditional wings. It is also a very large portion so even though it is a bit pricey, it is certainly worth it for how much food you get. I also had the Cesar salad which was great as well! Service was quick and very nice so an overall great experience!

Are there heaters in the outdoor space?

Hi Courtney, we do have infrared heaters. They do warm the space, but don't create the same heat as being indoors on a really really cold winter day. On an average winter day, it is comfortable.

What is the vegan egg made from? :)

Hello! It is a combination of tofu, chickpea flour, nutritional yeast, vegetable stock, and spices. We hope you like it! -Sasha Aber, Owner.

The booth we originally sat at made us feel too squished & hot, so we changed to a table which made us feel a lot better (regarding the heat) Alyssa was our server and she was great, however the service was a bit slow (not her fault, seemed like the kitchen?) We dined in on a Friday but we arrived early around 4:30. We were the only people in the one dining area with two others at the bar so not sure why the food took so long. However, the timeliness (& the heat) was my only complaint. The beer was great as well as the food! We also had two different managers come to us to make sure we had everything we needed, which was great. Would recommend.

Service was OK. My one pet peeve is allowing servers to leave dirty dishes and empty glasses on the table. And our server, although attentive, did not clear any dishes or glasses. Thank god I don't have epilepsy, the light over our table kept blinking non-stop. Plenty of off street parking for patrons. Lots of varied seating, both indoor and outdoor. I made a bad choice. Skip the hot honey chicken over donuts brunch item. Its nothing more than 3 chicken fingers over what tasted like a couple of dry entemann's donuts. (Missed opportunity..theres a greta bakery across the street..should get fresh glazed donuts from them. The donuts ruined the dish. Other meals were very good. Easter quiche special with hollandaise sauce and fried potatoes was delicious, although the size of quiche slices was kind of small. Burrata avocado toast was great, and so was their cheese omelette. It was perfect dining for us as we didn't want a heavy, upscale meal at 1:30 in the afternoon. Will definitely come back next time we are in town for dinner and drinks.
