The customer service here is abysmal. Truly bottom tier atrocious service. 1 out of every 3 visits, the food is served hot, fresh and delicious. 2 out of 3 visits, pick only one of the three descriptors from the previous sentence. It's almost always dirty inside and the dining area is cold in the winter and warm in the summer. We are a LONG WAY away from the days of Jake's Burgers - local Delaware treasure. Ever since the rebranding (and franchising out) to "Wayback Burgers," the prices have risen while the quality has decreased. This store, in particular, seems to have a very apathetic owner and staff. We usually go to the one in Avondale but they were closed today. We asked for their Wayback burger sauce and what the workers handed us was not it. The sauce they gave us was dark, not golden, and it tasted like barbecue mixed with mustard. Definitely not what the Wayback gold sauce is at the Avondale location. The workers also didn't give us our ranch for the fried pickles. As far as rest of the food goes, it was pretty solid. The fries and pickles were not as crunchy as I'd hope, but still tasted fine. The onion rings were good. They were a nice size, too! Usually the ones we get at the Avondale location are way too tiny! The burgers were good. We tried this burger place earlier today, and was "greeted" by rude kitchen staff. Instead of, "hi how are you", we (group of 4) were stared at and a young lady behind the counter yelled "Omg I'm about to quit, it's time to go home". I realize today is New Year's Day and I can empathize with staff's frustration with working on a holiday, but this is no reason to be rude to customers. An average burger place. As I'm not from the area i was hoping this would be a regional chain ala Whataburger, Fatburger or In N' Out, but it only places slightly better than a McDonald's hamburger for me and I'm not sure it's any better than Wendy's. The food was fresh, and hot. However as with many fast food reviews I think reviewers skew toward 1 or 5 stars. If you aren't from Delaware and want to try something new it's fairly priced, but I'm not sure it's where I'd go once Five Guys opens up. read more

this establishment changed hands a couple of months ago. It was one of the best burger meals I have had in a long time. The burgers were real fresh burgers and we're out of this world! I ordered the classic burger and you get to choose whatever you want on them including fried onions. my son ordered pretty much the same thing only he wanted barbecue sauce on his. We ordered onion rings and french fries. The onion rings were real onions and were crispy & delicious. We both ordered shakes one chocolate and one strawberry. Ordered takeout from here and it was terrible. The burgers and chicken were both burnt and dry. All of our sandwiches didn't have the mayo or other sauces we ordered, making them even drier. They also forgot our sauce for our fries and mac and cheese bites. Everything was so bland and dry we could hardly choke it down with copious amounts of water. The two workers were very friendly and made our food, they could've told us to leave but decided to make our order for us. Our Burgers, fries, and shakes were outstanding and hit the spot. This place is really consistent, really since they have opened. Their food is consistently good and service consistently slow. We used to eat here about once a month, but now we are down to just a couple of times a year. The latest and greatest: the Big Easy (with Cajun remoulade) is a really good double burger and the Cajun tater tots (with remoulade dipping sauce) are pretty good, too. The good: I love fresh potato chips, and their's are great. The hotdogs are good (I like the chili dogs) and the sandwiches are all pretty good. They have added flavored waters to their drink selections, which is really cool and the flavors are great. All around, the food and drink, including shakes, are very good. The bad: Service is slow, always has been, and probably always will be. I recommend ordering 45 minutes ahead, even if you are going to eat in. I've been in and out of Outback faster than Wayback. If you order carry-out, you must check the bags. They were out of hot dogs on our latest visit (it is spring break and nearly all the students are gone... what the frack?). We almost always order a milkshake, but they generally forget to give it to us (or do we have to pick up at the counter?). Bottom line: Great food if you don't care about the service or speed. Even if they mess up, they will eventually get it right. But you might grow old while they do. read more

In general Jakes Wayback's burgers are terrific, but this particular Jake's is horribly run and ineffective at both the staff and managerial levels. I've tried to get take out here three times and each time they have either messed up my order or been out of critical ingredients/supplies. I ordered take out online tonight. I arrived to pick up my order at the time indicated on my confirmation. When I got to Jakes my shake was ready with my fries and onion rings but they were still putting the toppings on my two burgers. Getting the burgers topped took two staff member more than five minutes, while my shake melted and fries got cold. Once the burgers were done, one staff member realized they hadn't made the salad I ordered, so all the food sat another five minutes while they completed that last part of the order. At this point the fries were ice cold and the shake was essentially chocolate milk. To make matters worse, they were out of Caesar dressing (so my Caesar salad was just lettuce) and out of bags to carry my food out, so I had to balance my two burgers, salad, shake and fries in my arms as I made my way to my car. The final kicker was that neither of the burgers were made properly. Both were missing two of the toppings we requested, so literally every part of my order was served to me at either the wrong temperature or was missing ingredients. Food is fine, time it takes to get it is too long. This is not fast food like Panera or Five Guys. This is waste of time to get a quick meal to eat in or take-out. Also could not phone ahead. Service is poor as the staff of 6 all seem to want to interact with customers when there is a complaint. If they know the customer, they also get distracted and chatty. My wife and I ordered from this location tonight, and granted we know that times are stressful due to Covid-19, but our order was 2/3 incorrect! Her burger was fine, not the best she had ever tasted, but correct at least. Mine (a Southwest burger with no jalapeños, and add bacon) was exactly the same as my wife's, who ordered the Wayback classic. I have a severe disgust for onions, and don't like tomatoes or pickles. I also do not care for ketchup or mustard. I asked for a double stack burger with chipotle mayo, no jalapeños and to add bacon. The burger I received was inedible. To put the nail in the coffin, the cheese fries we ordered and asked specifically to be modified into house made chips (because they have no option for this under the house made chips) with ranch on the side... came as fries with no ranch :) and they were very bland tasting as well. Two stars because my wife says the burger was okay, but not worth it for the trouble. Oh, and the final final pinch of salt in the wound was that when we tried to call 4 or 5 times, it takes you straight to voicemail! And we checked their hours online, and even with the adjusted hours, they should've still be open! read more

Small burger joint however it's a gem, burgers were fresh, the meat juicy and flavorful and lots of topping options. Beef not your thing? Chicken, garden and impossible meatless options are available. So we like Jake's burgers. They're not drop-dead amazing, but they're way better than any of the typical fast food type options, and their milkshakes are the old-fashioned kind where you can just feel the belt notches expand as the straw starts slurping at the bottom of the cup. At this stage of life, such indulgences must be measured, but that one is usually worth it. I think THIS Jake's will end up being a four-star establishment, but as best I can tell, they're not quite there yet. The staff was friendly, but less than efficient. (Does it really take THAT long to make a cheeseburger?) and even though we REQUESTED eat in, and our tag stapled TO OUR TAKE-OUT bag said eat-in, they bagged up our order to go. All the pieces are there, but they haven't quite assembled the puzzle yet. All the same - delighted to have a Jake's Burger place in walkable distance to the university. They put everything else I didn't ask for on there "standards on the burger" what's the point of writing additional instructions if they pay no attention to them. B. If you ask for cheese on a burger shouldn't it be melted? Literally the burger must not have been Hott when they threw the slice on the patty... It was 1/3 melted which made it hard and gross C. I ordered chili.. And they did not provide me with a spoon? Just small things that take NO EXTRA time at all. Pure laziness that if they changed could make this place a million times better. Jake's has decent burgers but something about them are always off. The burgers are made fresh and they're always juicy but for some reason after being smothered with all kinds of condiments they still always manage to be bland. I'm not sure if the meat itself isn't seasoned but it's the signature taste no matter which jake's you go to. That being said it's still one of the best choices for fast food (second only to five guys) and the milkshakes are delicious! The familiar burger franchise is just what you should expect: better than the standard fast food chains but not as good as some of the better, more gourmet burgers you can get at a decent sit-down restaurant. The burger quality is good, but the options are limited for toppings for a place that mainly deals in burgers. I have never been disappointed with the quality of the food, but the service is not consistent (it's a college town after all). I took my wife and grandchildren to your South Main Street Newark Delaware location tonight. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. I'm someone who generally is extremely tolerant of fast food workers, as I used to be one myself, so I understand when they get frustrated. But as I said, I was in with my grandchildren. The man running the grill at about 6:15 (white male, probably in his 40's), he'll be the only one in the store that night that comes close to that description, kept cursing....using the "f word". After about 4 times, I thought, I'd go over and just ask him nicely to stop cursing. I said, there are kids in here, and I know you're having a bad night, but can you please not curse. So, as I walk away I hear him complaining, saying this is why we shouldn't let people stay in the store and should only do takeout. Then goes into this rant about being a grown man that should be able to do what he wants, then looks over and says, wait, there's 4 of them sitting together. Tell them they can't sit together, only two people are allowed to sit together. I'm assuming that this is a covid restriction that he's referring to, but I've been to other restaurants in Newark, and 4 people can sit together. So I stand up, grab my wife and grandkids to leave. Ultimately, another employee convinces me to stay long enough to get my food, and I realize that the guy who was cursing had his mask down below his nose (clearly a covid violation), and then as I waited for my order he pulled the mask off entirely while in the grill area (something I intend to report to the local health department). If there was a manager on duty, I have no idea which one of the employees it was (might have even been him), but it was all I could do to get out of there without having more words with that man. Incidentally, I can tolerate the fact that they didn't get our order right, didn't give us all our food, didn't give us our fountain drinks, but to basically kick us out just because we ask someone not to curse in front of children? Stopped by there today and was disappointed in the time it took to get two hamburgers and fries. I did learn how to hit on a female employee from witnessing what appeared to be the manager hitting on one of his 6 employees. The excuse of freshness takes time is a very poor excuse for a group of staff who apparently come to work to socialize with each other and ignore their customers. Listening to you guys behind the counter yuck it up the entire 40 minutes I was there with each other is not an environment I will patronize with my hard earned cash in the future. There was one employee who couldn't have been nicer and got us new ketchup , cleaned all the tables and counters in the place while the other members of the staff busted his chops about being a rookie.
