I was excited to go to Homegrown Cafe this past Saturday night. I always hear such wonderful things about it. You can only imagine my letdown when the experience was HORRENDOUS. I hate to write any negative review for any restaurant, but I was so appalled by their lack of service and professionalism that I feel to say anything positive would be a lie. Their one bartender, a short, portly, hobbity looking fellow with a beard has to be one of the slowest and poorest excuses for a bartender I have ever seen. The place was packed and this guy slogged around the bar while his counterpart made 4 drinks to his 1. When he finally made his way to our group, he acted like a total jerk. His kind, unassuming, give-freedom-art-and-love-a-chance exterior was just a disguise. The soon as he opened his mouth he turned into a rude, degrading, and clueless oaf who turned away two of our friends who had been there drinking and eating for hours giving the establishment a hefty sum of business (as they were there celebrating a graduation with many other friends and family) bc they didn't have wristbands on. He also wouldn't accept their IDs. After he very rudely informed them it didn't matter if they had spent $1000 he wouldn't serve them. Didn't he recognize them after they had been ordering drinks and tipping him all night?! Then he turned his negativity toward another girl in our group who tried to order two shots. He very nastily asked her what she wanted and when she told him (a very common shot) he said "what is that?" with as much attitude and annoyance in his voice as he could muster, hand cast to hip, head cocked to one side, eyes squinted to slits, and spit flying forth from his mouth in a spray of disdain. Before we could even supply the answer to his question he had slammed his stumpy hand down onto the counter right next to her arm and leaned right into her face and screaming TOO BAD! NEXT!! The girl backed away from him because he looked as if he might launch himself over the counter in unprovoked anger. Due to this aggressiveness the young woman's fiance told the bartender to back off and he was being a real jerk (although, I will admit that he used a more colorful word) and the bartender proceeded to act aghast and kicked us out. Was he having a bad night? Possibly. Was he busy and maybe even stress out? Probably. However, you get paid to serve the customer. We were not even asking for great service or good service for that matter. We waited 15 minutes just to attempt ordering a drink. Still, that is forgivable on a Saturday night in Newark. But, to have him act like a rude jerk like that for no reason was unacceptable. They have lost any future business from our group and anyone I happen to tell this story to may also choose to steer clear. What a shame that one bad apple spoils the bunch. read more

Being a Vegan in Delaware sucks. So its great when every once in a while I can venture down to Newark and actually have some options. My wife and I went to Homegrown last weekend and I was blown away by all of the choices on their Brunch menu. Almost everything can be made Vegan on the menu. I had what I think the called the world's best BLT which had Tempeh Bacon, Tofu Scramble, Vegan Cheese, Lettuce and Tomato it was damn good and really filing. It also came with home fries which is a big plus. I can't wait to go back and try some of the other stuff. read more

Best food and service I've had . I had the Buffalo cauliflower which I never thought I would say this but I liked better than chicken! ( my hood card is going to be revoked now) and I had the green goddess sandwich because a goddess should have the goddess sandwich right? If you are new to a vegetarian or vegan diet I would say to start there and it will inspire you to continue. I have been frequenting Home Grown for about six years or so. Every time I have been there I have had a truely positive experience overall. The staff is very friendly, the food is great, and the atmosphere is delightful. The only negative thing I could say about this place is that it can be hard to order drinks at the bar on a Friday or Saturday night. Says on the menu "VERY spicy". Mike gave me the Reaper aioli for my tots. Holy hot! But tasty. If you like really spicy, take the Moo Caliente on. Now Mike is the owner, bartender, and designer of all this. I have never had the opportunity to actually speak with the guy I saw on TV but he is so down to earth he acts like just an employee. What an honor to get to hang out and speak with the owner. An incredible experience and you must try Farmer & the Cow if in Wilmington
