I wish I didn't have to leave this review- but as a sports fan who goes to "sports bars," I feel obligated. I came to Home Team to watch the National Championship with out-of-town Clemson alumni and the experience was wholly subpar. Admittedly, the game was on a Monday night, but HT could not be bothered to postpone their weekly trivia. In fact, the TV's were muted until after kickoff because of trivia. The game itself was fine, but as soon as the final whistle blew, staff turned off the TVs because they wanted to close up. I'm not one to hold up servers at closing time, but if you're running a sports bar, that sort of thing obviously comes with the territory a few nights a year. What saves HT from a one-star review is the positive experiences we had during the regular season watching multiple games throughout the day. Unfortunately, I won't be coming back. It's slightly embarrassing to have vouched for HT as hands-down the best spot to watch college football in Richmond and for my friends to be entirely let down. read more

Home Team Grill is a pretty typical sports bar, but very clean, spacious and has a well-staffed bar. Prices are very reasonable, and they have some good bar food. The chicken tenders are SO yummy, and I'd recommend getting the sweet potato tater tots as well! Pro tip: before leaving after a long boozy night get them to box some late night food up for you. This bar serves as a great place to watch the game, or all of the games since they have tons of giant TVs! read more

Went here last night with friends for trivia night. Ordered wings and french fries. What showed up was wings and tater tots. No explanations no mentions nothing. Tater tots aren't even included on the menu. The wings while technically crispy were so because they were overcooked. And the hot honey sauce was more sticky than it was flavorful. Stopped in here last Friday night and was surprised to see plenty of open tables. I figured out group of 4 might have to wait. There was a beer on the beer menu that looked unusual and when I asked our server she couldn't describe it. She even called over another coworker and he could only say that it was unlike any other beer. Perplexed, I gave it a try. It was a wheat beer/hefe with a little extra hop kick. It really wasn't that hard to describe. We started with some chips because we were starving. Chips were good and we devoured them. I got the Cowboy Burger. This one seemed great in concept but was lacking in execution. The onion straws were very crispy and were a tough thing to eat. The chipotle ranch had a good kick too it. The blue cheese just didn't work for me. It was an odd flavor amongst everything else. My buddies had the Hall of Fame burger and said it was great. I wish I had gotten that. Overall, an "A-OK" experience. I'm always looking for new places in Richmond so it might be a while before I get back to Home Team Grill. read more

Home Team Grill is not my typical place to chow down but it was the perfect place for our team to meet up and grab a bite to eat before our game and they had plenty of outdoor seating on a mild day a few weeks ago. This place is relatively big considering its close proximity to the VCU campus and the surrounding businesses. We were able to get a table for about 10 of us no problem on a Thursday evening. The outdoor atmosphere is really chill and it's right on Main St so you can people watch and see the cars go by. The food fare here is typical of a sports bar/american restaurant and I heard their tenders here were pretty good so I got those. The wait time for my tenders was about 20 minutes, if not a little more which was a lot longer than I had anticipated as most places have them frozen and they just re heat and serve. Apparently these tenders are actually hand battered and fried to order which is why they took so long. These were some of the best tenders I have ever had! They were crispy on the outside and juicy inside. I got the "Spicy" tenders which actually weren't that spicy but still tasted great. I would get this dish again the next time I come. There was only one main waitress for our table but they used another food runner when handing the food out. The service was just okay, nothing terribly slow and nothing extraordinary either. My meal came out to $10 which was a little pricey just for the tenders. This is a great place to watch sports and hang out with some friends. read more

My first time here, it was a beautiful day and. I couldn't resist sitting outside. The server was quick to greet us and very attentive. She kept the drinks flowing and the food served in a quick manner. :) my kind of server. I ordered the chicken Philly.. Plain. I don't like a bunch of stuff on my Philly sandwiches, just meat and cheese, the server looked at me like I was crazy, she had jokes because I took most of the stuff off that it came with. It was good though, just a tad bit dry. Not enough cheese. The lemonade was pretty lame, i should have went with just water because it tasted better. Everyone at my table seemed to be oohing and aaahing over the clam chowder, Im not into that but it must be good since they all loved it. I work across the street and often bring healthy snacks to be healthier, but more often than not I find myself thinking about these chicken tenders and honey mustard. tonight I ordered them and there was a gentleman dressed as Guy Fieri. he was super nice and boy did I go to flavor town. My friend for some reason does not like orange cheddar - only white. They were able to accommodate this! With a delicious-looking quesadilla that was perfectly browned and crispy tender. I was also impressed with the freshness of the vegetable accompaniments: lettuce, tomato, guacamole etc. Our server didn't even flinch at the white cheddar request. That's hard to do. We love Home Team. I've been here more times than I can count and I get the Patriot wrap every time. Sooooo good. The drinks are great, buckets are a fair price and great special. Last night, we went with some members of our kickball team and had Grace as a server. She was wonderful- friendly, funny, quick with service, and knowledgeable about both the menu and sports on TV. Not sure how she was able to know exactly what was going on in the Braves game and also give us outstanding service, but it was impressive. The shrimp bowl was an uninteresting blob of rice with mixed vegetables (like from a plastic bag) and some rubbery shrimps. Garnish included an artisanal-style Nike swoosh of peanut sauce and tasted like someone tripped and poured all the hot sauce into the bowl. No heads on the beers. I take back anything good I said about good service at the Home Team Grill in my previous review. The bf went there last night to watch Monday night football, and service was atrocious. The place was shockingly not busy. In the past when I've gone there to watch Steelers games, there's always been several groups of Steelers fans and a lively atmosphere. On this night, the bar was about half full, and there were about 4 tables besides us in the entire restaurant. We chose to sit at a table even though we only wanted drinks for a better view of the TV. Our server came by and got our first drink order. Fine. We watched the game, drank our beers and wanted to order more. We waited. And waited. Our waitress didn't return. The bus boy came by and took our empty beer bottles but didn't ask if we wanted more or if he could get our server. We watched our server have a 10-minute conversation with a friend. Finally, she wandered over and asked if we wanted more drinks. No apology. She didn't even seem to find it odd that we were sitting there with bev naps and no drinks. Okay, we thought, she was talking to a friend, we'll give her some slack. We drank these beers and wanted to order more. Again we waited. And waited. This time we could see our waitress in the kitchen reading something (studying for a test??) and she didn't look our way once. After about 15 minutes with empty bottles we asked another server to send her over. Again, she came by, no apology, no nothing and asked if we wanted more drinks. By this time, we were so annoyed we just decided to leave. We were planning to stay for the entire game, but left plenty before the end of the first half after this extreme crappy service. The worst part was the lack of acknowledgement that she had been totally ignoring us, and the restaurant wasn't even busy!! To be a good server at a sports bar, pretty much all you need to do is get people beers when they start to get empty. She couldn't even get this down. I've never had such bad service here before, and I guess my words of advice are, if you go into Home Team and it's not busy enough to keep the servers on their toes go elsewhere or you'll get ignored all night. read more

Thanks to River City Sports & Social Club, Home Team has turned into a social Mecca for young professionals after weekly athletic games. This is the reason I was there this evening. Sports bars aren't typically my go-to venues, but if the sports bar's where the party's at then you can count me in. Home Team certainly fits the bill for an ideal sports bar that's spacious, clean, and has outdoor seating. Yes, I said outdoor seating. Hollerrrr. That's if you can get a table, of course. Tonight it was packed, but we just patiently waited for a small table to open and sipped on some brews while we chatted. Once the table cleared, the staff was super helpful and brought us extra chairs since we had 6 in our group. It does feel a bit sterile, but it's a sports bar so what do you expect? If you're looking for standard bar food and a cold beer, then they've got you covered. They actually have a pretty good chipotle ranch salad dressing, too, if you're in the mood for some greens. For all you animal lovers out there, they allow pups on their patio, as long as they aren't disturbing other patrons. I don't have a dog myself, but I watched a super cute one chillin' a few feet away from me this evening. One of the waitresses even brought him some water. Two thumbs up in my book. read more

Even on a Friday night, where there is a band playing and the place is packed to the brim, the servers stand tall and work their tales off to provide a great dining experince for us customers. Myself, my wife, and 4 friends went to HOmeteam Grill on Friday, Sept 7 after a HORRIFIC expericene at Peacoks Pantry. Our server was Lara and she was amazing..2 of us got wings. we asked for extra napkinds and a a few extra glasses of water. Lara went out of her way to make sure we have more than enoguh napkin. I highly recommend this place for dinner or even just a casual even. read more

Call me a hippie (I'm not at all environmentally active), but it seems to me that a business where the primary byproduct is glass and aluminum could bother going through the painstaking free process of sending out these items for recycling. I went to chuck away bottles by the bar and asked if the bin was recycling or I should put them somewhere else. She calmly replied "We don't recycle", my mouth dropped, the manager overlooking shrugged, and after a brief questioning how this could be I left perplexed. Perhaps not having a bottle deposit in the state doesn't incentivize recycling, but why not do it anyway? It's free. I don't think there goal was to save 5 minutes of minimum wage labor a day either, think it was just lazy negligence... And wouldn't it be worth the goodwill in a city that gives a half a crap about these things? Foods alright, prices are avg, but I can't patronize a place in the future with their head this deep in the sand. I get it if you're a small restaurant making ends meet (that should still recycle but for whatever reason doesn't), but a busy bar where there is an unconscionable amount of metal and glass byproduct? This is my go-to lunch during the work week. The standard for food at Home Team is far above the normal Sports Bar standard. They take pride in it. Their salads especially are quite fresh and their dressing is home made. The real deal here is the staff. I've been eating here now regularly for 7 years since I moved my office into the neighborhood. There hasn't been one month that I haven't gotten comfortable friendly service; the kind you'd expect from a neighborhood spot. Just such nice, hard working people. I don't know how they find that magic formula to get such good service at a decent price but they've done it. And they've got great kids food; though I would not recommend bringing kids during Sunday NFL football or other heavily attended sports events. I take clients there all the time because I know they'll be treated right. Heavy sports days are different. They still do a great job but it can get crowded by that's why it's a sports bar. So some of the survey questions I answer only apply to lunch. read more

People it's centered around sports, so get off your high horses. I go because I'm recognized as the bowling alley chick by the bartenders, they know my beer of choice, and I can get any Colorado team game on without a hassle or strange look. I went to this restaurant about 3 months after they opened with the critic from the Times Dispatch as well as 2 others. The only happy person at the end of the night was the girl that ordered chicken fingers. I ordered a Reuben that was edible at best. The shrimp for the appetizer was decent but not great. The ribs were decent but overcooked and not as tender as they could have been. As for beverages we were extremely disappointed. I asked our server what the drafts were and her response was "I don't know". Right in front of her I stood up and walked to the bar, then came back and recited the list to the other avid beer drinker at the table. Worst of all though the view from our table was directly into one of the women's' room stalls. I literally could see the handle to flush... not appropriate for eating. Points deducted for only playing baseball games on the many TVs, it would have been nice to have looked over and seen at least 1 other sport. read more

My boyfriend, who recently started working here, encouraged me and some of my coworkers to attend the Tuesday burger night. We are frequenters of several other burger nights in Richmond, but we decided to give it a try - cautiously. This is my favorite burger night in Richmond. Burgers on special all night, drink specials go till 7, and you don't just get an overcooked cookie-cutter burger. The burger is made to order, comes with fries, and is delicious! In fact, the Cowboy burger may be my favorite burger in Richmond. My only complaint is that only domestics (i.e. macro brews) are on special during happy hour, but this prevents me from spending WAY too much money and defeating the purpose of cheap burgers. read more

This review is only for the burgers. I can't speak for anything else on the menu but I can say that boy oh boy I love their burgers and on Tuesdays they offer half priced burgers. They're so friggin' delicious! I think restaurants are finally moving away from serving frozen burgers and the ones that aren't , need to jump on this ship. My favorite burger is the Hall of Fame burger which is a 1/2 pound burger with a fried egg, cheese and bacon....it's so good my mouth is watering and I wouldn't be opposed to eating one of those delicious burgers for breakfast. right. now. The bf always orders the cowboy burger which is topped with blue cheese, onion straws, A-1 sauce and this tasty chipotle ranch dressing...if you order it, order extra dressing because the fries are a perfect vessel for that ranch to your mouth! Similar happy hours to other fan area bars...I think the food overall is better here but I think it's pretty typical of what you find in this area with a little bit of flair. Went up weekend before last to visit a friend. Was interested in going somewhere on Saturday afternoon to watch the SEC Championship game. This place was suggested to us by a couple of locals. Being a 'sports bar' the food was on par with what I expected, nothing too crazy delicious but good (did the major league nachos and a nice little caesar salad). They had buckets of beer which are nice with a crowd. Our waitress suggested the upgrade to the eighteen ounce bottles. For two bucks that is a legit value. It was a mild sunny Saturday. So it was nice to have the patio doors opened up. My kind of December weather. We had friendly and pretty quick service even with the congestion. My company thoroughly enjoyed herself so that was a good thing. All in all, a nice chill spot. A place I hope to visit again. read more

This is a good location to chill out, have a beer with friends, and catch a game! There are tv's everywhere and the atmosphere is rather relaxed. Though I came during lunch rush, the food was worth the wait, and the waitress was attentive to both myself and co-workers. I like how the doors can be opened to allow a summer breeze to come in. Even though 4 tables were empty, they told us it was impossible to sit at the table we wanted. They have rules damnit! Not 30 seconds later they sat another group at the table we requested. When I inquired as to why we couldn't sit there, the sent the manager over to give us some BS about a seating order. Not 2 minutes later, they harassed another group about a table they tried to sit at. Mind you, the bar was mostly empty. This stupid policy tainted our entire experience and I will never return to this establishment. To be fair, they do have a lot of tvs and the general layout is good. Just horrible policies.
