This review is long overdue - I can't say enough wonderful things about the crew at HomeGrown Organics. They worked with our property throughout 2019 and 2020 and transformed our space into a gorgeous oasis - a place to sit and relax, a place to learn how to grow food, bees to enjoy, and a water feature to add not only ambiance but wildlife and ecosystems. They are experts at their craft, so kind, and incredibly hard working. They even added gorgeous detailed finishes in the patterned bricks and stonework in our patio spaces. I'm grateful for all they've taught us and all the work they've done. And continue to do as they help us maintain this beautiful space. John and his team are very nice people and know their plants well. That said, please do not get them to build you anything because this is what you end up with: we had a fence put in two years ago and please see the attached picture of what the fence looks like now. They used the cheapest wood imaginable, used nails that rusted when wet and didn't put a clear coat after building the fence. We had to get them to come back to put in support posts because the fence was so flimsy that it buckled and warped. They ended up charging us extra even for the support posts. In the two years since this fence was built, we had to reattached several boards, and fix a gate that was falling down. Just all around shoddy workmanship and they weren't cheap either. Always beware when the pictures in portfolio are from years before (the fences on their website are from when Scott and Ethan were the owners). read more

This is a great company. Scott and Ethan are the nicest people imaginable, and they are so dedicated to doing the best possible job. They did a patio and a set of steps for us. They also work with an electrician called Peter, who did a great job too. They are very creative and know how to get the best out of any kind of garden or terrain. Their craftsmanship is excellent, and we ended up with something much better and more elegant than we ever thought we would be getting for the price. They are extremely reasonable in their quotes. I also love their environmental slant. They were able to use some re-cycled flagstones for our job which not only saved us some money, but are a much better use of material than junking it. They are also very knowledgeable about plants and made some good recommendations to us that we haven't yet acted on. Highly recommended! A great local company. read more

We had Scott and his crew come out to completely redo our front beds surrounding our lawn in both the front and rear of the house, which was at this point mostly dead, half-assed plants the contractor threw in as they were finishing the home before we bought it. (all home depot, still with tags and perfectly bucket shaped rootballs that just pulled right out) John took the lead on our project, and went above and beyond. They had great plant choices, the design was perfect, and he even created a new island in the middle of our back yard to accommodate an ornamental Maple and a few smaller plants. He proposed the idea, which turned out amazing, something we hadn't even thought of. Out of hundreds of edibles, grasses, trees, and shrubs planted, we had all but 1 survive their planting and first couple months; that was due to 2 100lb Bernese Mountain Dogs who trampled a poor lady fern. I couldn't have been happier about the quality of work, the timely responses, and the proffessional manner in which they conducted their business. I would highly recommend them to anyone interested in having landscaping work done. Lastly, their prices were beyond reasonable, made several other quotes we received for the same work laughable. We worked with Homegrown Organics on landscaping our back yard. They had great ideas for paths, raised beds, and plantings. And they had several options for different sizes and costs for the project. We had one patio expanded with brickwork, a stone retaining wall patched up, a raised bed built, mulching to keep the weeds under control, and some beautiful plantings with an automatic drip irrigation system to make it through the dry summers without using too much water. Now instead of feeling like a difficult to maintain project, our backyard feels like a natural outdoor room. read more

We adore the folks with HomeGrown Organics! They did a beautiful rain garden as well as a flagstone patio for us at our old house in Wallingford. We worked with the Rainwise program for the rain garden and HGO was one of the approved vendors on that list. John is very easy going and had great ideas to lend to the vision of the project. We don't know native plants but he does! Once it came time to break ground, everyone on the work crew was super nice as well. I made them cookies one day because they were just so sweet. We sold the house shortly after the project was complete because our family outgrew our little house. We've recently just met with them to walk through our yard at the new house because it needs some major help. Once again, John has great suggestions of plants that we would never have thought of on our own (thimbleberry - great idea)! We're looking forward to our new projects getting underway. For great insight and passion for native plants, these guys can't be beat. We also felt that the cost for the projects was incredibly reasonable. read more

My partner and I first contacted this group in February, hoping to get some hardscaping and landscaping done for a small yard (townhouse) so we could enjoy our yard by summer or fall. The staff seemed very friendly and EXTREMELY knowledgeable - total green thumb people - but were not always good at communication. Typically, it took only a week or less to receive a response, but at one point we heard nothing for two weeks. As it turned out, our landscaper's partner had just had a baby! Totally understandable, but it would have been nice to get a heads up in advance or an out of office message. Communication was pleasant and professional when it came, and I get the sense that timeliness is something that HomeGrown is working on, but you may need to be more proactive in the beginning. I would also recommend putting your deposit down quickly and getting on the books before getting into the nitty gritty details. That was my mistake - I got too excited! We used an independent contractor for a portion of the work (fence and patio), which unfortunately was not finished until August. At that point, HomeGrown wasn't able to start installation until November. I think things may have gone well once we actually put down the deposit and got the work started, but ultimately we decided we wanted better communication and were impatient to have everything done, so we went in a different direction. I'm disappointed that things didn't work out this time, because I get good vibes from this company. I would recommend that you give them a shot. read more

We hired Homegrown Organics to transform our back yard from an overgrown and unusable space into a place to entertain and garden with ease. They had a lot of work to do, especially because our backyard has no alley or other access except about 15 steps up to the house because we live on a hill. The old deck and extra foliage had to be cut down and carried out by hand. And all of the recycled concrete, fencing, sand and concrete pavers were carried up the stairs and into the back yard. The workers were well organized. The demo went quickly and smoothly. The contractor, Scott, worked with us and our neighbors to get our new fence installed properly. The recycled concrete wall and steps leading up to the terraced garden look beautiful. A lot of care and conversation went into the project to ensure that everything was to our specifications. We hired Homegrown Organics to put sod down, add gravel to the dog run and plant a tree. They did an awesome job! Our yard was a total mess and now it looks fantastic! After talking to 15+ landscaping companies and getting quotes, Homegrown Organics was by far the best. They were prompt in communicating (I didn't hear back from about half of the landscapers that came out to give me a quote), the pricing wasn't the lowest (you get what you pay for) but it wasn't close to the highest. They were fast, clean, and professional. We plan to hire them again to finish the rest of the front yard. Highly recommended! read more
