I hired Homeland Contractors VA in March 2024 to address a drainage issue in my backyard by regrading a swale and installing a drainage pipe. Initially, the work appeared to solve the issue. However, just over a year later, the swale began collecting water again and failing to drain properly. The pipe they installed also became clogged. I reached out to the company a few months after the contract's warranty period had expired (March 2025), hoping they would stand by their work given the relatively short time since completion and the nature of the problem. Unfortunately, Mario, the owner, came to inspect and told me he would not be doing anything. He simply referred me to the expired contract, despite the fact that the issue clearly related to the work his company had done. What was even more concerning is that, after our conversation, Mario informed me that he had recorded our discussion without telling me beforehand. While Virginia law may allow one-party consent, I found this behavior highly unprofessional and unsettling. I'm writing this review to share my experience and caution others. I expected a contractor that would stand behind their work, especially for a project as important as drainage -- but that was not my experience with Homeland Contractors VA. read more

After using Mario and Homeland for several jobs and referring several more to him, I used him on a fairly large (over $10k) home project for a hardscape patio and bush trimming. He came out and was great, gave us a rendering of the work to be done, and we made several changes to it until we got it exactly how we wanted it and got on the schedule. That was the end of the good service from Homeland. Once they started working, we quickly realized they were building from a previous version of the rendering, not the final. When I brought this to Mario's attention, he was very defensive and defiant about it and told me there was nothing that could be done about it. They also ended up making the patio much bigger than intended and changed the style of rock for both the rock wall and the pavers without discussing with me first. Again, when brought to Mario's attention he told me he was doing me a favor by doing it this way instead of the way we agreed upon...ok whatever, I'm sure it will still look great. Homeland also delayed finishing up the final bush pruning by multiple weeks until I had to reach out to them multiple times to get them to come back to finish. When he "finished" the pruning, he quickly drove away before I could look at the work, because he knew the work was not completed as expected and wanted to get out of there before I had the chance to discuss with him. Finally, when I received the final invoice, Homeland attempted to charge me an additional $550 for their poor services. When I let them know I would not be paying anything outside of the agreed upon amount, Mario personally told me I was dishonest and began name calling. You will always come 2nd to their larger/business projects and I would not recommend them to the average homeowner. Poor customer service. read more

I must say that Homeland Contract exceeded our expectations by far. Not only the work was completed on time way before the holidays, but also under budget. Mr Monroy and his crew were very professional to work with. They arrived early in the morning to work, started working right away, with no time or materials wasted. Mario made sure the work was being completed accordingly in person and by phone. The Homeland contractors crew were honest, respectful, and efficient. This landscaping company is the one you need to contact for all your landscaping, hardscaping and other contracting work, they will not disappoint you. Mario also helped me imagine and visualize the patio of my dreams, a project that we have been putting off for so many years as we couldn't find the right company for such an endeavor and investment. After I talked to him, I knew they were the perfect fit to handle our project. I didn't hesitate and they started right away. Mario's input was pivotal to help me choose the right materials for our gorgeous patio. We have the best looking patio in our neighborhood by far. We're looking forward to our endless summer afternoons and crispy fall nights in our awesome backyard. read more

Their work has exceeded all of our expectations, and in a matter of 4 days they have turned our muddy mess of a sloped backyard into my favorite part of our house. read more

I have been using Mario and Homeland Contractors for over 10 years and their work is FANTASTIC! We have the best looking yard and property because of Homeland Contractors. They've sodded the entire front and back yard, they've designed all of our gardens (and we have several all over the yard), they just installed an underground well to reduce flooding and they do a Spring clean Up (opens your yard for Spring - clearing the way for out door activities) every year. Their work is pristine and they take pride in all they do. I've done all kinds of upgrades to my house/property/yard and with all the projects I've used different contractors. Mario and Homeland Contractors are the ONLY contractor I have not swapped out. Mario has been with me since day 1 and he will be with until we are no longer at the property...at which time he will come with me to my next! Mario, the owner, had an appointment to come to our home in May. I arranged my schedule to be home to meet him on the appointed day and he never showed up. His business card motto reads "People of Commitment!" and I was surprised by this negative first impression and lack of commitment. I received a message from him the next day apologizing and asking to reschedule. I agreed to a new date and Mario did show up. He was polite, seemed knowledgeable, and talked about how important it is to him to do a good job. My husband and I liked him and were interested in reviewing his quote. He said it would take roughly one week to email the breakdown of costs for the work. I heard nothing from him for almost two weeks and emailed a reminder that we were waiting for a quote. No response. I contacted him once more about a month later and still no response. It seems that he is definitely not 'committed' to doing this job. Would not recommend wasting your time to meet with this company. read more
