My shopping experience at the Homestead has been pleasant. I love perusing through the shop in all seasons enjoying fun finds. As others have mentioned it is pricey. Parking is ample, access around can be tricky as sections can be narrow but is manageable. Staff here are super helpful and friendly. Everything from plants, to bird feeders and seeds, to a gift for anyone. Landscape services are available here. Grab a coffee at Rise Up and come through, Homestead is a neighborhood fun stop place. read more

Disclaimer: Their original Davidsonville location is physically closer to where we live, and it's nearer/dearer to my heart for many nostalgic reasons. So, temper my review with this in mind. ;) That being said, I have zero complaints about this location. Other than... it simply doesn't have the same footprint they have out in D-ville. It feels cramped inside, and there isn't a lot of room for a cart or moving around too much. Still, they have a ton of gardening and decorating products, especially around Christmastime! We were actually here to see Santa, since we couldn't book him at the other location. But, I'm glad we checked it out. They have a Rise Up coffee shop attached too, which was convenient. Made for a nice little treat after shopping. I really don't have a lot else to say. It's still hit-or-miss as far as value is concerned. Some items seem vastly overpriced, and others are more reasonable. You'll pay more for seasonal items, of course, but check back after said season is over (or close to its end), and you can find some very good bargains. The customer service is on par as well. Very friendly staff who are helpful and approachable. Never had an issue with service at Homestead! Overall, great garden shop in Severna Park, and were it closer, I'd be a regular here instead. I love their holiday train setup in the back as well! (Though, again, Davidsonville has a LOT more space for a MUCH bigger display... but it's the effort that matters, and both deserve the highest marks!) read more

This place is more than a plant store. They have a wide variety of gardening supplies and patio furniture. The people working there are very nice and knowledgeable. I only go here when I have to, but they do have nice plants and it's fun to look. But their crepe Myrtle's are $300+ and I bought one of similar size at Home Depot for $70. The layout is wonky if you buy dirt or manure or mulch its way around back. You have to drive or walk back there, see what you want, then come back up front, stand in line to pay then walk back around to load. They won't let you walk in and out through the back. I guess they're cracking down on shoplifters I don't know. Between the prices and the setup it's not customer friendly in my opinion. read more

I came in last week and got two large pots and a plant. Everyone was so helpful. So I came back to get plastic pans to put under some other plants. I was parked in the handicap so I was close to the door. I asked the man at the front of I could check the size of the pans under my large plants in the car. He looked at me and the turned away and said no you will have to bring the plants in. So I lifted the large plants from my car and tried the pan under each plant. He never offered to help me. When he rang up my total for 2 pans, less than $5.00, I let him know that I was not happy that I had to do that. He said in a very loud voice that if he had let me do it every one would want to do it! It was clearly meant to be mean to me for no reason. But maybe I do know the reason. There was another employee there who heard the whole conversation. She only laughed and looked at him as if to say you are right to be mean to her. I will never step foot on that store again. And I have been there for every season. I live in the area. I am sure they don't care but I don't think that I was treated fairly so I will spend my money else where. read more

Homestead is responsible for my plant hoarding habit. What a great store. Beautiful inside and out with so many plants, trinkets, clothing and rain boots... Unique and beautiful finds abound! I spend good chunks of time browsing every aisle. Plant varieties are the best in town. Succulents, Ivies, outdoor/indoor... it is expensive but worth the quality. Beautiful store with a lot of garden supplies and products to include indoor and outdoor plants that looked healthy, pots, planters, seeds, shoes, fertilizers, starter kits, and cute seasonal items for the designer in the family. They have a small selection of sauces, jellies, honey, and other food/snack items; there is a pet and BBQ section as well. You can pick up some outdoor furniture too. But wait, that's not all. There is a decent size gift shop in the back of the store as well. Everything was simply beautiful, and I had so many design ideas, but like many people have mentioned, they are very pricy. Always on the hunt for garden and design items, I have had the opportunity to do a lot of shopping around and know the value of things. I could not justify spending the money they were asking for items. I did buy one pack of seeds, but that was all. If money is no object, you will find many wonderful things to fill your cart, otherwise, you may want to keep it moving. read more

If you take a look you'll notice the overall rating of this store is based on some very old, outdated reviews. I don't come here often but each time I do I receive extremely professional and welcoming service. The store is well stocked, clean and organized. Although the prices are a bit high in my opinion, they do have some awesome merchandise. My dog and I visit each year in the fall so he can "pick" his pumpkin. They were super stocked today with a ton of variety. I purchaed (I mean Reaper picked) a large orange pumpkin and I also got 4 mini pumpkins, 3 of which were called "baby boos". They were so cute! The gourds were also quite unique. They sure had some funny looking ones. read more

We went there as we have experienced MANY years of great products and most importantly great service from both their Davidsonville and Severna Park stores. We specifically wish to call out the exceptional service provided by Stephanie Stowell, Hardgoods Manager. Ms. Stowell listened carefully to our planning, was most helpful in her recommendations, and helped us with the purchase and order of all. She guided us through the special sale at the time and ensured the best pricing for us. Ms. Stowell was friendly, knowledgeable about her products, highly professional, and went above and beyond. Any would be wise to seek her assistance for future purchases. The furniture looks great and is exactly as we had envisioned and hoped for. Bottom Line: A beautiful store and upscale nursery, but pricey, with spotty customer service. For better selection and service, head to Davidsonville. This spring I redid all of the landscaping at my house and when my soil was out of space I purchased pots and planters to plant even more stuff. Eighty percent of my purchases came from Homestead Gardens so after spending many hours and thousands of dollars at Homestead, I thought it was time for an updated review. Here is what I like about Homestead Gardens in Severna Park: -Plenty of parking and on my way home from work. -The gift shop! Beautiful displays of home décor, gifts for ladies, and other fun stuff. Even if you don't garden, Homestead is a great stop for their décor and gifts. -The plants, shurbs, trees, etc. are well cared for and always look healthy. -High quality name brand stuff like Weber Grills and Polywood outdoor furniture -The nursery is nicely organized so it's easy to find what you're looking for. -They carry my favorite brand, Proven Winners. -The addicting Amish brand candy at the checkout. (Best gum drops ever!) -They are open until 8pm (at least in the summer) so I can grab some items after my work day is over. -They have plastic sheets and cardboard boxes available at the exit so you can keep your car clean. -In the fall and winter they have awesome Christmas displays. I think Buddy the Elf would love to live here. Here is where Homestead Gardens in SP could approve in my opinion: -Customer service is spotty. Either you get someone who is super enthusiastic and knowledgeable or you get someone on the opposite end of the spectrum. I actually dreaded, and avoided, one of the cashiers here this spring because he was so condescending. Ugh. There are lots of coaching opportunities at this location. Davidsonville staff is much, much better! -It's pricey. Some items are definitely 25% to 30 % more than the competitors. -The logistics of carts and doors is ridiculous. Sometimes when you walk in the front door you walk right into carts blocking the door. And if you want to be a good customer and return your cart, then you have to awkwardly, manually open the door and then try to get your cart through. They really should just put a cart corral outside and automate the door. I live about four miles form this location and its on my way home from work so I do stop in here a lot for a few items at a time but when I really need a big haul of stuff, I head to Davidsonville. read more

The houseplants here have mealybugs. I'd check each one thoroughly before buying. This is the second season I've visited the store and multiple plants I've picked up have had mealybugs all over the stems. read more

The pros: They have a wide selection of garden tools, decorations, furniture, etc. For example, I found white window boxes there for a decent price that I had only been able to find online. They have a decent selection of plants in the nursery. The cons: For plants--which is why I ultimately went--it's extremely overpriced. I came in search of a specific shrub, "ever red loropetalum". I needed 6 of them and had been able to get 5 at another nearby nursery, Meadows Farms, for a great price, but I needed one more. Homestead had the plant in stock, but it was not in nearly as good condition as the ones I bought at Meadows Farms. To add insult to injury, the price was $10 more expensive than Meadows Farms and unlike Meadows Farms, they don't offer a military discount, so I wound up paying $13 more for the plant (If I had bought all 6 at Homestead, I would have paid nearly $80 more)! I asked, but Homestead refuses to match competitors' prices and of course, no military discount. I walked away from Homestead feeling financially violated. For plants I would NOT recommend Homestead and will not shop there again, unless I absolutely cannot find what I need anywhere else. read more

Wow. Extremely disappointing. I came here to buy a Weber grill because they had the same model for the same price as Lowes and Home Depot. First, I had to hunt down an employee which seemed absurd because there was no one shopping in the stores, and then both employees I spoke with didn't really seem to want to help me. I was trying to support a local business as opposed to the big box stores, so when I asked if they did free delivery like Lowes and HD I was told no. Ok, fine. I purchased a gorgeous artificial tree last year and cant wait to put it up again this year. Im a Property Manager and the community is not permitted to have real trees. The tree we got was 7.5ft I believe, a frasier fir type. Heidi helped me pick out gorgeous ornaments, told me about sales, and assisted in a personal theme. Outside of my profession, I came back and bought our real frasier fir Christmas tree and ornaments. The staff is knowledgeable and happy to help. Highly recommend. read more

I recently went in looking for advice on my yard and Heidi was extremely helpful, took the time to find out what our lawn concerns were and then recommended the products we needed. I have purchased plants from Homestead for years. The product is at best the same as you can get elsewhere, though they seem to often have more exotic products then other places. The staff is generally nice and willing to help. Keep in mind you will be paying more just to shop at Homestead. Recently we went in and had a few bushes that did not make it, they were a few weeks past the one year mark, so we brought them in to see about some sort of replacement. We went through 2 staff members who were nice and said it seemed reasonable to get some relief as the plants were obviously VERY dead (ie everything was breaking easily when you touched them and not just dead, but limbs still had some strength). When they finally got to the nursery manager who needed to approve their thoughts the idea was summarily dismissed and we were told that the policy is not to offer anything beyond the one year mark for any warranty. The staff was surprised and said sorry. The nursery manager was busy with other people when I tried to approach her, and would not even stop when prompted by the consumer to acknowledge me. Note to consumer: If you think your plants are on their way to the great beyond (aka dying), don't bother with life support nor hold out to see if the spring turns them, kill the plant before the 1 year mark and get your replacement. Solution offered to retailer: Empower the team to think about what your are saying and how to deliver a message. Consider how simple it would have been to say, "sorry that the plants did not make it. While our policy states we cover the plants for one year we are willing to provide you a XX discount if you buy the exact replacements on these now dead plants." As a customer I would have gladly reached into my pocket and paid and thought that was reasonable ... as a consumer I would have told people how the team was understanding, and provided a reasonable solution and thus been a customer going forward. As a consumer (and see the variety of reviews I have provided over time) I would have provided a great review of my experience and continued being a customer. read more

For years, I've loved everything about Homestead Gardens- knowledge, products, customer service, interior and garden selection.

I was very excited to try out Homestead Gardens to purchase some plants for Mother's Day! Walking in the selection was beautiful, but I was unable to find what I was looking for. I passed 3-4 employees, none of which even smiled at or greeted me. Then, I approached an employee and asked for direction on where to find what I was looking for.. they acted as though I was not worth their time and told me to ask someone else. It took a few minutes to even find "someone else" and once I did, that person was too busy talking to another employee to assist me as well. I decided that no matter how nice looking the plants were, it wasn't worth spending my money at a place with such poor customer service. read more

In the past, I've been pleased with what this store has offered; but poor customer service has soured any earlier experiences, and my wife and I are not likely to shop here again. A few weeks ago, we were interested in buying a Santa Clause figurine. Unfortunately, it was damaged and would need for us to repair it in order to display it in our home. The store manager insisted on charging us the same price we would have had to pay had it not been damaged. To make matters worse, we sent an e-mail message to the store to lodge a complaint. That message was ignored. We sent a second message. That message too was ignored. Not a good way to do business. I'm sorry! read more

Great nursery, quality plants, beautiful place to visit. I usually take my copy of The Washington Post Garden Book with me on my enjoyable outings to Homestead Gardens. They have such a great selection of quality plants that i can usually find just what the book recommends. And if I forget my book there's always someone knowledgeable there to help me. Very disappointing customer service. Being visibly disabled and walking quite slowly,,I would have appreciated some direction on entering the store. But no one even greeted or asked if they could help me. In fact no employees were immediately visible although later while browsing I saw a couple women in green aprons scurrying around the perimeters more interested in stocking and arranging the merchandise than acknowledging or speaking to customers. I could not even get their attention they were so preoccupied and"busy". Outside in the garden area I walked with difficulty for almost an hour looking at perennials and ornamental grasses to get ideas for a mailbox planting. Again I was the only customer there but could find no sales help. The lone store employee out there was too busy watering plants to even look up. I would have gladly paid their higher plant prices if made to feel welcome and worthy of customer assistance and professional level advice. read more

Buyer Be Ware - I purchased $380 of Christmas ornaments and decorative figurines at 50 to 75% off. They came home to see which would work and which would not. At the top of my receipt it said items could be returned with receipts within 30 days. False!!! Two days after my purchases, I called to make sure they would take the sea life ornaments back, as they were meant to be a gift, unwanted by my sister. I was told by a manager that if I had read the BACK of the receipt, nothing 50% or over was returnable. I feel a large sign should have been by the cash registers notifying customers that that ALL Christmas Items were NON-RETURNABLE. How many of you have read the fine print on the back of your receipt, when it says you have 30 days to return prominently on the front? Homestead Gardens, Shame on You! Also, a $40 x-mas sculpture was sold without an on/off switch and several light bulbs punched inward. These were not noticed until I got home and put batteries in, batteries that must be removed every time I want to turn it off. I have been a loyal customer since this store has opened and this left a bitter taste in my mouth. For years to come, I will tell everyone about this, so that others will not fall prey to their unscrupulous practices. read more

I've been a customer of Homestead Gardens for 2 decades - but no more. Homestead Gardens is not the same reliable company that they used to be. Why? Because their "experts" give out incorrect advice, they sell you the wrong product to fix the misdiagnosed problem, they say they'll make it right then don't follow thru. Here's what happened: I bought and had HG install several plants that soon after became sick so I got HG to diagnose the problem. I bought the product they suggested then spent months buying and spraying fungicide to no avail - the plants died. I went back to HG and received a different diagnosis and was told there's no cure. Instead I was given a list of plants that would live in the diseased soil - all of the plants on the list were trees or large plants that wouldn't work in my foundation planting bed. More time passed because I took HG's word that there was no workable solution. Finally I decided to research the problem myself and learned that there are indeed a few small sized plants that will live in the diseased soil. When I learned of a solution I contacted HG for assistance but got nowhere so I finally sent a certified letter to the new owner, Brian Riddle. Shortly after he received my letter (in December 2018) his assistant called me to say that the owner wants to help me and would be in touch. That was over 4 months ago, during which time my several phone calls to him and his assistant have not been returned. It seems obvious now that they aren't owning up to their mistakes and are ignoring a longtime customer who has been financially hurt by them. So I ask you, is this a company with expertise about plant diseases? No. Is this a company that stands behind their products? No. Is this the company that sold me diseased plants or transferred the disease into my soil on their contaminated tools? Yes, but they won't do anything to make amends. Never again will I darken their doors. read more

Homestead Gardens was once a special place to go, especially in the month of December, not anymore. They used to carry unique items made in the U.S.A. and beautiful imports from Europe, today just about everything is made in China. I was willing to pay a little more for quality items, especially some of the unique items they used to carry, but why pay $14-$20 for the same ornament you can buy at Target for half that price? In addition, you'll most likely get better customer service at Target or Walmart. It's really sad to see that Homestead has gone down the "Made in China" path. read more

I was a loyal customer to Homestead gardens due to the variety and convenient location. My spouse would buy me $200 gift cards from there for my birthday and Mothers Day. I had aquired quite a bit of mrtyle money(1/2 off coupons) since Spring. I was unable to use my myrtle money over the dedicated redemption weekend because I was away on vacation. The store manager would not honor my discounts. However, if you signed up to be a new member they would give you $25 in mrtyle money to use. So they will let a new member use mrytle money but not a loyal customer who shops there frequently. I will be taking my business elsewhere from now on. read more

I bought 3 Denver daisies that were completely pot bound. I should have returned them right away, but decided to try to clean them up and plant them. They never did well, and I took a completely dead one back within 60 days. The so-called manager that spoke to me tried to tell me that this plant "just needed a little water"!!! What a crock! She even admitted of knowing the product had been pot bound, so my question is-why wasn't it pulled out of stock? I got a credit, but the other 2 plants were dead within days. When I contacted Homestead via the website, I got absolutely NO response. Disgraceful customer service. Since I went to college for horticulture, worked in the nursery biz, and am currently a director of a local gardening club, I am spreading the word about this to my fellow members and to the other Maryland clubs. The management here should think carefully about who they might be treating badly. They should also have their employees get into the habit of NOT talking to people like we are all idiots. That's how I felt after my last visit. Bad move, Homestead.......And I am NOT in San F....right here near Pasadena. read more
