Very standard Midwest highway stop. Pretty slow day, not many people, not a good sign. Very quiet. Food was standard without any bells and whistles. Only place so far that I can find eggs Benedict in the area besides the chain restaurants. Down side was it didn't taste fresh. Sauce was thick and heavy. To the owner Dean: I hope you see this, because we've always respected you and enjoyed coming here--but your front host is driving people away. This is not the first time we've had issues with her, but today was the last straw. The older lady with glasses, and long gray hair. We waited over 10 minutes while she ignored us and rang up customer after customer--including people who walked up well after we did. No greeting, no acknowledgment, no explanation. Just being flat-out dismissed. We stood there waiting for over 10 minutes with no acknowledgment. I finally said, "We're leaving--you're so rude!" because it made no sense that she kept cashing people out instead of seating us, even though we had clearly been waiting. When I came back in and asked to speak to the owner (who we've met before and is always very kind), she outright refused. I asked multiple times, and each time she told me no. I explained how unprofessional it was to keep helping people who arrived after us, and her response was, "If I seat you, I'd have to set you up, and I don't want to make them wait. I'm going to cash them out. " That logic made no sense. So it's okay to make us wait instead? I asked, "Why didn't you ask a server or someone from the back to help? That's what we do where I work. We acknowledge people and take care of them." No response that made any sense, just continued to argue with me and it got heated. It was absolutely ridiculous how she kept arguing with me over us waiting so long and her continuance of cashing out. Where I work it is who is in line in order of walking up. Her logic made no sense at all. Then to blatantly ignore my request to speak to the owner. Then as I'm walking out the door she offers a manager. I had asked multiple times and you kept arguing with me! I said I had enough of you I'm never coming back. What made it worse was that she continued to argue with me instead of trying to resolve the issue or even just apologize. The whole situation left a really bad impression, and honestly, it seems like she's not suited for a customer-facing role. We love this place and have always enjoyed the food and the owner, but this kind of treatment makes us say we aren't coming back. Wonderful owner run restaurant! Our party of three visited on a Saturday morning. We quickly found a spot in the big parking lot out front. The restaurant was crowded and our wait to be seated was about 10 minutes. The interior of this western style restaurant was full of character with wooden walls and articles such as windows from North Dakota. The vibe was comfortable and social. The menu contained a good variety of homestyle cooked foods. We chose an egg white omelette with toast, oatmeal, the salad bar, and the eggs, hash brown and bacon platter. Since it was crowded, the food took a little longer than expected to make it to the table but since we were busy conversing, it wasn't a problem. The food was tasty and of decent portion. This is an extremely family friendly place that all members of the family can find something filling on the menu. From lunch to dinner options, the menu is a cornucopia of country cooking. Decided to try Homsteader's based on the "good" reviews on Trip Advisor. Mistake. The restaurant itself is old, out dated and dirty. The server was nice, but less than enthusiastic to see that customers were satisfied. The Husband ordered the Boneless Ribeye. It was pitiful! I posted pics check them out. After all the talk on Trip Advisor about the "good home cooking" style food I decided to try the Chicken Fried Steak and Mashed Potatoes. The Chicken Fried Steak was REALLY greasy and the Mashed Potatoes tasted like boiled mashed potatoes (no seasoning, no butter, no milk) just plain boiled and mashed. It was so bad I sent the plate back and just had the salad. The salad bar was small but did have fresh veggies and a pretty good pasta salad. My son ordered the Fried Fish and fries meal, he said it was pretty good. Again, food pics are posted. Check them out. Sent food back, not satisfied. Won't go back. read more

Atmosphere - Rustic restaurant on the lines of Cracker Barrel but not so cheesy. Food Appetizer - None with breakfast. Main Course - The Denver Skillet was not served in a skillet. The cheese was barely melted on the top and it was in long strips, not shredded. The hash browns were lightly done and still greasy on the bottom of the dish covered in the rest of the food. Dessert - None needed after stealing food off other plates. Service - It is always hard dealing with a large group. When you are serving coffee you and my face is buried in the menu you do not need to slide the creamers in between my face and the menu to place in on the table. Ask me; get my attention to move so you can get it on the table. I was not even drinking coffee. They did split the check, and our waitress asked us if she needed to do that. This place is the pits. We waited 20 mins for a water refill and we only got the water after we asked for it. Food took forever and was cold when it got here. Philly cheesesteak was dry and had hardly any filling, cheese burger was burnt, and even the chicken fried steak was missing it's gravy. We asked for gravy for the steak and it took 15 mins , which at that time it was already eaten. The waitress brought out the gravy and apologized for the lateness stated she "had to microwave it." I have no complaints! We waited a few minutes to be seated. There was plenty of seating in the waiting area. The restaurant is relatively small, and we were seated in a booth. Our waitress brought us water with our menus. I ordered a coffee and got a huge pot of piping hot coffee. I ordered the hot beef sandwich. It was plain white bread with a few pieces of beef between and smothered in gravy, with a small scoop of mashed potatoes in the middle of each sandwich piece. It was served within minutes of ordering and was flavorful. The burger was served on regular white bread. My mate said it was good. We didn't get the salad bar, but it was small and clean. Everything looked fresh. The restroom is clean, but badly needs an air freshener. The only negative thing I have to say is that the carpet under the tables badly needs a deep clean. The dust caked up in the corners would have made my allergies go crazy if I was seated there. Thankfully, we had a booth where there is no carpeting. Our waitress was efficient and attentive. Decided to eat here on Black Friday. Similarly to other restaurants in Minot, the staff seems to be undermanned. There was a longer than normal wait to be seated. There also seem to be a strange odor. I'm not sure if it was just someone from the line of people waiting to pay the bill up front or the restaurant itself. Everyone I was with raved about the salad bar but honestly, it's nothing spectacular however, it does offer a variety of typical salad bar selections.
