We first met some of the Home Performance Matters employees in 2010, then in 2011 we committed to a full home energy upgrade. Our goal was of course to reduce energy usage, but for us it was much more about having a home that was consistently comfortable with no hot or cold spots. What I like the most about Home Performance Matters is how thorough, honest, hard working, and attentive to detail they are. Every employee that we worked with was a pleasure to be around. They were all friendly and (almost) made it fun to have your house upended with construction in every part of our humble, and now very comfortable, abode. The first step was the Home Energy Audit conducted by Brad from HPM who was very professional and thorough and he was good at it. Brad let me watch the Audit and happily answered questions I had, which were many. HPM has invested a lot of dollars into high quality energy audit equipment, so you know you will have a very accurate energy baseline of your home. The 2nd step was Andrew spent hours with us figuring out exactly which energy upgrades would be best suited for our house and most importantly for our lifestyle and needs. Andrew gave us very detailed summaries, actually, an entire notebook, filled with different options for us as well as energy rebates that apply. We went thru each page with him and selected the options that fit our budget and that would give us the most benefit. Andrew would tell us what he recommended, and often it was the less expensive option, plus he would tell us from his experience why he would do something a certain way. HPM allowed me to save some money by letting me do the exterior and interior re-painting and drywall patching myself (which I did and it looks good btw). We paid a small fee for HPM to manage the red tape of the rebates, tracking them and communications with us and the rebate people. The rebates change all the time and I would recommend having HPM manage the rebates for you. HPM insulated all exterior walls as well as refilled in parts of the attic insulation, we had all new duct-work and vents installed and they took the time to walk around the entire house with us and marked the spots were we wanted the vents installed. They covered and cleaned up every step of the way. HPM installed an innovative furnace in the attic that only uses hot water supplied from the water heater. So now we have an extra closet in the house were the old furnace was located. To give you an idea of how much more insulated our home is now, we took out a 12 year old 80 to 100,000 BTU furnace and replaced it with in a new 20,000 BTU furnace. They installed a bathroom fan too and a hot water re-circulation pump. We removed our A.C. and tried to go without, which we did for 4 months. but last summer of 2012 was just too hot, so we called HPM and because they knew we were sort of in a hurry, they got to us in just a day or two and installed a new 2 TON high efficiency A.C. that cools the house just fine. Note that our old air conditioner was a 5 TON. This 60% reduction in size of the A.C. shows the difference in energy consumption of our home before and after. Of course there had to be at least 50 or 100 holes in the exterior stucco of the home, they patched every single one so that they are not visible unless you know what you are looking for. The home is significantly cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and way way way more comfortable. B4 the energy upgrade we had hot spots and cold spots. The furnace would kick on and blow hot air for 3 or 4 minutes, then you could feel the house getting colder and the furnace would kick in again about every 10 minutes. Our main TV room was usually freezing or super hot compared to the rest of the home. They filled the ceiling of this room with insulation and it is a cozy room now. HPM took detailed measurements of each vent and custom designed and sized a heating system that would only put the heating or cooling needed into each room. After the upgrade, our home is a consistent cozy temperature all the time. There are other things we might do. We did not have the crawlspace insulated, but I'm wishing now that we had done that, so we might do that soon. I thought maybe I could do that myself, but I think it would be a lot of work and HPM is probably better at than I am. Also, we are going to get a Green Point Rating certification done soon too. It is like having your home LEED certified. My review is almost too good to be true, but HPM is really good at energy upgrades and they deserve a good rating. Every issue I brought up was thoroughly addressed and fixed (there were hardly any issues). They insulated the walls, attic and under the house (crawl space), added new windows, installed a tankless water heater and a bathroom fan. I purchased my first home and within 30 days of obtaining the keys, Andrew, Michael, and the HPM team installed my new windows and ducting. We contacted this company for an estimate. One of our neighbors had them doing a job and we were interested to see what they could offer. The rep was on time, courteous and very knowledgeable about his company and what they could offer and for how much. We thought the price was reasonable plus we hadn't found any other company that offered the service we needed, which was to insulate the space between our vaulted ceiling (joist) and roof. We also had them do the attic and the outside walls. The process only took 2 days. The workers were on time and were hard workers. I was first refered to HPM when I asked for insulation refferals from neighbors on the Nextdoor app. 3 neighbors quickly recomended HPM. I called and was given an email address to send my appointment address. The next day I got a call back and we scheduled an appointment. I was told they also did windows and could give a quote. We had already had a quote from another company from a few months back that was high in cost but I said what the heck since youre going to be out here anyway. Jim came and spent a small amount of time measuring the walls for the insulation and all of the windows. He answered any questions we had. I appreciated the no pressure sale since our last quote experience was so bad in that aspect. He emailed shortly after with a detailed quote for both services and products. We decided to move forward with the insulation, signed and returned the quote and called with the deposit. We had the insulation done that same week. 2 installers came and did the job in a couple of hours (it was only 2 walls). They spent some time chatting with me about the energy efficiency of our house and what were some good ideas to complete more work slowly over time. I appreciated that time he spent. The work was completed well. The last few days we've had temps in the 90's. The walls are nice and cool so it's solved our problem. I will be slowly replacing our windows next since they said we don't need to do them all at once and it will help with our budget. I received a survey to complete right after the install and got a call that evening from Dan who wanted to go over my responses. Home Performance Matters helped us do a green remodel in 2012 to qualify for the California Energy Upgrade Program rebates. Initially, they tested our house to see where we could save energy and then wrote up a detailed description of things we could do to increase our energy savings. We could pick and choose from a number of upgrades and Andrew Durben spent a good amount of time talking us through the pros and cons of each combination of upgrades as far as cost/ energy savings and how it fit into our long term plans for the house. He is very dollar conscious and cares about the client getting the most for their investment. He also considered our ideas on future renovations when placing appliances and running ducts and vents. The work was done in a very timely manner and the employees were very considerate and kept in communication with us during the process. If there were any concerns on my part, they were fairly quick to address them. They care about their reputation and I get the feeling their company will grow on the sound work they are doing. After project care has been good too. Their work is guaranteed for 12 months and they have been responsive to any questions we have had since. We had them put in new insulation in the walls and attic, new hydronic heating system (which I recommend over gas.... it is more moist), new energy efficient air conditioner, all new ducts (which they buried in insulation in our attic, upgraded electrical and new windows (milgard). They got the job done in a couple of weeks. They are working hard getting our house rated as a Green House through the LA Green Points Rating program. It is a lot of paperwork for them, but, I get the feeling it is about making the world more environmentally sustainable that gives them that extra edge when doing business. read more

I hired Home Performance Matters last August (2015) to install a new HVAC system, ductwork, and insulation. I did extensive research to determine the company that would have the best service and the best prices, and this company came out top on my list in every area. We had them do an energy audit and looked at multiple options. During my initial research phase (which lasted over a month) Joel was very responsive to my questions as I researched different HVAC models and companies. When I made the choice to go with this company Matt took over as the project manager who came out with his team to do the actual install. The entire crew was completely professional every step of the way from showing up when they said they would, to clear communications, and keeping the work area neat. They worked with me to determine the government credits for the energy efficiency improvements due to the new system and even lowered the price on the new unit when the one I initially chose was no longer carried by their supplier by the time we were ready to order. I was especially impressed when about 7 months after the entire project was completed, I got another check *from* Home Performance Matters since the rebate for my system was larger than they estimated. I got two quotes for an energy upgrade. Home Performance Matters, on paper, came out slightly more expensive than the competitors. But then I learned that the other company was promising (in a clever nonbinding fashion) a rebate that had been phased out. I further discovered that the insulation in my attic, which they were telling me had to be replaced, really hadn't turned into dust; and the free water recirculation pump I was promised: it couldn't have been installed unless I wanted to replumb the entire house. From Home Performance Matters there were no phony promises. They weren't trying to be the cheapest in the business although maybe the cheapest that met very high standards. Here are other things I appreciated about the company. They didn't try to sell me anything. We were given expert information and allowed to choose whatever suited us. I would say I had no fewer than five or six visits in the home to discuss the work, even before anything was signed. In the end I got what I wanted and the incentives covered eighty percent of the cost. I needed a new water heater and the one I got cost more than what I paid for the entire job. As it turned out, I saved a lot of money by choosing this company. Throughout I had the sense that I was dealing with the Ph.D's of heating and cooling and energy efficiency. They brought up all sorts of details that I hadn't thought of and answered all my questions. The work was done carefully. For instance I now have a tankless water heater (highly recommended) that has worked flawlessly for almost a year. There were a few casualties in the work, a cracked window sill and a broken bird feeder. They paid me back for the damage, without my even asking. When they installed the fan in the living room ceiling, they didn't just touch up around the grill, they repainted the entire living room ceiling. Everything was done as promised without any surprises and met or exceeded my expectations. One small thing I would note. I had a whole house fan installed. It was my idea, not theirs. I recommend this too, but you have to get the right one. Avoid Tamarak, which is what I chose. It's overpriced, inefficient and noisy. Check out the ratings on Amazon for better and cheaper fans. I have previously provided a review of HPM describing the overall excellent service, communication, quality and professionalism with the Solar PV project they completed for us. It was no surprise that the service provided for their energy efficiency work was equally exemplary. The energy efficiency work provided included removing old insulation and reinsulating the attic and kneewalls. Secondly, all the old ducts from the HVAC unit were removed and replaced. They also did some electrical work and added energy efficient fixtures. The work for this combined project was completed within the agreed upon 4 days. Two issues did arise during this project which should be mentioned. During the insulation, one of the workers stepped through the ceiling. However, true to their promptness and professionalism, HPM had repaired the ceiling with matching texture by the time I returned home from work that evening. The next day, they were able to paint to match the ceiling such that the repair was seamless. The second issue was that an older vent was to be changed with a newer and more energy efficient model. Unfortunately, one of the workers changed the vent from the wrong bathroom. Upon realizing the mistake, HPM replaced both vents with the more efficient model at no additional cost. I recognize that mistakes occur. I have dealt with several contractors and it is rare that "everything goes smoothly." Despite these two issues, things were still completed on time and to the highest standard. What separates HPM from other contractors, in my opinion, is again their professionalism, communication and desire/ability to rectify things quickly. For these issues, HPM corrected the situation to at least the same quality, if not better, then before the accident. This approach to prioritizing and rectifying their error is another way with which they separate themselves from other contractors. As with the Solar project, their ability to communicate with us and coordinate the work, city inspection etc... was outstanding. For this reason, the project was able to be completed with minimal interference in our schedule and life. read more

I was thoroughly impressed with HPM. From start to finish they have provided beyond exceptional service. When I began my search for an entire duct replacement on my home, I read tons of reviews on several reputable companies. I had estimates provided by six different companies. For the most part, I met with reasonable and informative representatives but was most impressed by HPM. Although they were not the least expensive, I felt the most confident with them. And even though I dragged my feet on making my decision (it took me well over 6 months to decide and move forward) they continued to follow up with my and my project and did not push me to rush my decision. I appreciated the follow through with the estimate, the scope of work, the removal of my old ducts, the installation of the new and improved ducts, and the service even after it was all completed. I can't say enough good things about this company, it's owners and especially the staff that made my project a reality. The work that is done requires a large investment in time and funds. As such you want the work to be commensurate to the price. I wasn't disappointed with any aspect. I made sure to do my research utilizing the tools on the socal gas company website in order to be able to qualify for rebates post home improvements. They take care of all of the paperwork to ensure its completed correctly . I got some quotes and not only did Home Performance Matters / Hometime Windows provide the lowest bid, it also provided the most services. In all I replaced all my windows (12 in all) with double paned low E glass (along with a sliding glass door with blinds built into the door) as well as removal /replacement of attic insulation and new wall insulation. The entire process was hassle free, transparent and with no aggressive tactics. Beginning with Jim Hofar on initial inspection all of my questions were answered and honest advice was given in regards to some issues specific to my home. I was even able to save some money by removing some of the old attic insulation myself. That alone is testament as to how this company is willing to work with you and your budget to achieve your goals. The installation process was even better. Special thanks go out to those tasked with the actual work on the project. That includes Ricardo and Luis with insulation removal and installation as well as Israel and Nate with windows. We called several HVAC companies who took a quick look then suggested our problem could only be solved by increasing the size of our two AC units (which were 4.0 tons and 3.5 tons). By contrast, HPM spent a couple of hours measuring the energy efficiency and studying the floor plan and layout and internal workings of the house, then suggested changing out the poor ducting as well as the attic insulation, replacing the furnaces and installing them properly (previous ones improperly installed), and - get this - SMALLER AC units (3 and 2.5 tons) which is all we would need with the improved ducting and insulation. They did all this and more (hi-tech NEST thermostats) for only slightly higher cost than the other HVAC companies' bids which did not include duct work or insulation. In addition, HPM told us about local rebates and did all the paperwork for them, guaranteeing the reduction in price even if the rebates didn't come through (which they did). The crews were respectful, tidy, quiet when possible, incredibly hardworking, knowledgeable, and good-humored - obviously dedicated to their employers. I feel incredibly lucky to have found this company and can't recommend them highly enough. They care about energy efficiency and are passionate about their work. The thoroughness and detail in every aspect of this experience including paperwork was remarkable. Ten stars! Someday when we need new windows, I will contact HPM. read more

We were looking for an energy audit company on Angie's List that was highly rated. We found one named Home Performance Matters, Upland, Ca. We were very impressed with the detailed and comprehensive testing Nate did on our house. We had already completed many energy saving projects including Solar over the last few years. Nate's energy audit gave us ideas of things we hadn't already completed. Jonathan also came out to our home and gave us a complete organized binder with everything Nate had tested for and all the findings of the audit. We did decide to add insulation to our attic to bring it up to R-38 value. Matt's crew John and Benjamin did an excellent job adding insulation and putting it in areas that were very hard to get to. We were very impressed by the professionalism, expertise, and helpfulness of the team at HPM. Their knowledge and services were clearly head and shoulders above the other companies that we looked at. To begin with, the technicians who came out to assess our home were very intelligent, well-educated, diligent, and polite. It was clear that they had a great deal of pride in working for HPM. We were even more impressed by Andrew Durben, who gave us the most comprehensive home energy assessment we have had. The assessment covered our energy usage, breakdown of the efficiency of our insulation (ceilings, walls, ducts, windows, etc), air tightness of our home, and heating and cooling system performance. This information made it much easier to know exactly where we should focus our time and money in terms of energy upgrades. Despite the high quality of their work, the prices quoted were as low as (or better than) other less qualified competitors. Additionally, we did not feel pressured at all - it seemed that they were genuinely interested in making our home more energy efficient at the lowest possible cost to us. I was getting multiple phone calls a day and visits at least once a week from various companies trying to sell me solar. I got an estimate from one company about a year ago and it was a horrible experience. A friend of mine recommended HPM to me so I thought I would give another shot. They came to my house and performed an energy audit and gave me a comprehensive assessment of where my homes problem areas were and told me where my best money should be spent. All the other companies just wanted to sell me solar but couldn't help me be more energy efficient prior to making an investment into solar. The work was performed professionally and carefully as one should expect. They answered all of my questions along the way and handled all of the paperwork. The communication link was key for me, they kept me informed of the progress and what I should expect next. Johnathan, Dan, Matt and the rest of the HPM crew are the best at what they do. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking to be more energy conscious and want to make their home a comfortable place to live while lowering their utility bills in the process.
