I finally made it here. The spot is so comfortable to be in. Nice decor and the service way on point. The bartender was very helpful picking out a beer to go along with the menu. Now, the menu; it was a good amount and not over the top like some places be. The group I went with ordered all the sides, pulled pork, turkey, ribs chicken and the brisket. There was no let down with any of the meats. All very well made with the right amount of smoke and seasonings. I really like the brisket the most. It was juicy and tender. Arrived over an hour before closing time (6:45 pm, close at 8 pm) only to be informed they were out of brisket and pulled pork, only had turkey. The turkey is very good, but not having brisket or pulled pork at a barbecue place is ridiculous to me, and the third time I've had it happen at this location. Just a regular Saturday night, not a holiday weekend (September 20th), so clearly just poor management, and no apologies, no explanation given. If you go to their Red Hook location, you'll wait over an hour (why they can't run their line like Hill Country, which does a similar volume is beyond me), or you can come to this location and risk not having brisket or pulled pork. Hometown Bar-B-Que smokes the best meats in NYC. Since smoked meats are quite literally my favorite food, it is no surprise that I absolutely love them. My wife also knows this, and she conspired with several other wives to make this past Father's Day a delicious one by ordering The Tailgate, a feast that serves 6-8. It comes with: 8 Sticky Ribs, 8 Vietnamese Wings (whole, meaning it's 16 wings that you'd get elsewhere), 2 lbs of Brisket, a Whole Wood Fired Chicken, 8 pieces of cornbread, and 4 sides (we got mac and cheese, slaw, pickles, and collard greens). The sticky ribs are, flavor-wise, everything I always want to eat. The wings are excellent. The brisket deserves the title at Brisket King that Billy Durney has won, and this past order, I was actually most impressed with the chicken. As juicy and flavorful as chicken can possibly be, to the point where I wasn't sure which meat was my favorite. In short, this is an incredible feast that no one in their right mind could ever complain about receiving. And while I am not in my right mind, I do want to be clear that I am not complaining here (I would never drop a star or anything), just offering some constructive criticism that would make this incredible feast even better for future customers (which will certainly include me again): 1. It should include some of Hometown's excellent two sauces, standard. I'm perfectly happy to eat their award-winning brisket sauceless, but some folks are not, which was kind of a bummer for them. Also, a little sauce is an excellent addition to the mac and cheese, among other things. 2. The sides are too small. A pint of mac and cheese (especially Hometown's excellent queso version) and a pint of slaw is simply not enough to match the amount of meat here. The ratio is wrong. I'd order that much for two-three people, and so it's definitely not enough for eight. Also, the food cost on slaw is minimal...please just give us a quart to cut through all that tasty brisket fat. 3. It would be amazing if there was some flexibility in terms of what comes in The Tailgate, or perhaps if other combinations were available. While I love the Sticky Ribs with all my heart, the Spare Ribs are the ones I run to. The ones I belong to. These ribs are absolutely phenomenal. As someone who has smoked a fair bit of meat myself (and makes a mean rib), I cannot replicate the simple, rib perfection that Hometown has here. They seem to be meat, salt, pepper, and smoke, and it's one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. I would love to stage for the pitmasters for a week or two so I could learn the secrets of the spare ribs, or at least be able to swap them in for something else. Anyway, Hometown, you're the best. Finally got to check this one off the list. I first heard about it from watching Michael Symon's throwdown on the Food Network. I didn't initially see that there was indoor seating and had been waiting for warmer weather but there is indoor seating available. The HTBC was delicious but I could only eat half because of the richness. I think maybe there was a rich spread in the sandwich that was the culprit. The Turkey was smoked well and tender and nice to have a non red meat option. They also have glass bottle soda like the kind still made with sugar. A nice touch is a self serve station for to go boxes and a water cooler so you can refill as you need. There were only two chop stations and the menu was only on folded paper once you got to the counter so I could imagine in warmer months you'd wait in line quite awhile. read more

Brought my family here tonight for a late Fathers Day dinner and it was a blast! Delicious food, outdoor seating, beautiful weather & nice live music @ this Industry City location. I placed our order through my phone (via Toast) and it only took 15 min even though I was quoted for 30. The brisket ($16 for 1/2 lb) truly lived up to the hype. We did not get enough and that is my biggest regret. It's definitely pricey (as with the rest of the menu) but worth the occasional treat. I just wish the portion sizes were slightly larger. The Vietnamese style wings ($13) were so saucy and messy but also so yummy - everyone really enjoyed them. We were disappointed that all the ribs were completely sold out, so we didn't get to try those. We also had the Brisket Sandwich ($16), sides of mac & cheese, collard greens, hometown slaw - all really great. My friend and I then waited an additional 20 minutes for the remainder of the food, after asking about an estimated time. I've been to Hometown in Red Hook many times, but the one thing I still hadn't tried after all these years were their sandwiches. We ordered lunch recently from the newer Hometown in Industry City, and took the opportunity to finally try them, getting the lamb banh mi and the pulled pork. The sandwiches were a little bit of a splurge ($15 for the pork and $17 for the lamb on our delivery app), and the whole lunch was a bit expensive after tacking on a large backyard potato salad for $11 (one of my favorite sides there, but so pricey for potato salad), but the food was excellent. The sandwiches came stuffed with meat, which I was happy to see, given the prices. The lamb came on a buttery toasted roll with your typical banh mi toppings of pickled daikon, carrot, and cilantro, and a sauce that had a little bit of spice and a little bit of sweetness. I'm not a huge lamb person, but I like the lamb at Hometown and the sandwich was delicious. The lamb did have a few pieces of bone in it though, but at least they were big enough that they were hard to miss. The pulled pork came with creamy cole slaw and pickles on a roll, and it was so messy but so tasty. I've always been a fan of their pulled pork, and they put a good portion on this sandwich. A little sad that the pastrami wasn't an option when we ordered, but we'll just have to get that next time! read more

We ordered for a birthday celebration dinner (takeout & only online orders only) on 11/19. The website is easy to use but I wish they had pictures or more descriptions of the pieces so we would know how much to order rather than guess. Most items are by weight but it would help to kind of describe it especially how many serving size (realistic serving size). We reheated the brisket, sausage and ribs for dinner after picking up cake and other food from other restaurant. The sticky ribs were really tough to chew (overcooked especially after reheating it?). Some parts of the briskets were dry but it is bbq and expected to slather it with the sauce all over it. We got some Sticky Sauce and Hot & Sweet sauce to slather all over the briskets. Came here with my family (party of 4, 2 adults and two very young children) around 1:30PM on a very cold Saturday in December (this was the Red Hook location). We parked in the grocery store parking lot next door (which had tons of available parking). I have wanted to try Hometown BBQ for years as I heard it was possibility the best BBQ in NYC but very long lines in summer. Even on this winter day, the wait was ~20 minutes for food and we had to wait ~10 minutes to find a table to accomodate 4 people but the food came out immediately upon ordering and was excellent. We ordered a half-pound of brisket, brisket sandwich, small mac-n-cheese, brisket queso, and two pieces of the honey butter cornbread. The portions of everything were very generous and all was superb. Sandwich in particular was massive. Based on this one visit, this place seems superior in quality to the many times I have visited Dinosaur BBQ (both Brooklyn and Harlem locations). I would certainly go back again with the caveat that the lines here are likely insane in summer (seeing as though even in middle of winter and not at peak lunch hours there is a wait and it is hard to find a table). They have a lot of outdoor seating to accommodate the extra crowd as a plus. Was very kid friendly and laid back as well. read more

Wings at $15 but they were. At $10 this would've been a rip-off. SMH Only the bacon and cornbread were redemptive. Honestly if you had nowhere else to go and had a dying wish for BBQ- go to hometown and buy 3 thick cut bacon with 2 cornbread ($40) and BYOB. I can't believe we let you do this to us Hometown. With only 2 people in front of us, it took about 20 mins to submit our order. Prices of beverages are not posted on the menu or anywhere else visible. So wife grabbed a wine cooler can. When she couldn't reconcile the $36 bill, when we only ordered a sandwich, she went to ask. $14 for a wine can? Come on. The pork on the sandwich wasn't all that voluminous, and it seems like more bread than meat. I felt similarly about the prices in my last reviews. I know there are restrictions with inflation, but you gotta create combos or something that puts more food in my belly. For the $200K and up salary people....go for it. If Katz's is the No.1 pastrami in NYC, I'd say Hometown is No.2! Love their pastrami and brisket. So juicy, tender, full of smoky flavor. The owner also owns Red Hook Tavern, which serves the best dry aged burger in NYC. The quality of the meat at both places is A+++! read more

We decided to sit indoors since there was no competition for that seating (no prime fire pit there like the courtyard). I got the brisket sammich, hubby got the ribs (1/2 lb). We also ordered a large coleslaw and small Mac and cheese. We wanted the banana pudding so we left some of the main to take home. Everything was sooo good. Took my dad to have hometown bbq because I've always liked the food. We ordered the food, the woman behind the cash register was friendly and helpful in choosing what to order. My dad took a tray and went to go sit outside and the table collapsed beneath him with the food and him hitting the ground hard. I am extremely disappointed and shocked by the fact that the manager didn't come to ask if he was okay, if we needed assistance, and there was ZERO APOLOGY. The woman behind the register was the only person who cared and asked if he was okay and replaced the food that fell to the ground without question, while the rest of the "team" scrambled and removed the table as if it was never there. First time coming to the industry city location and it was not the best experience at all. I'd like to preface by saying I'm someone that likes a good amount of salt on my food but this was like a salt explosion in a really bad way. Brisket: 2 stars solely for the brisket which I would rate a 3/5. Definitely moist but not as much as when I make it myself. The seasoning was a little on the spicy side but I'm just very very sensitive to spice so that's not necessarily their fault. They give it a sprinkle of flaky salt which I think they could do without since it's salty to begin with. Pastrami on rye: this is where they really lost all the points for me. It's was so ridiculously and cloyingly salty that it was painful to eat. The salt level on this sandwich burned my lips, tongue, and gums in a way that reminded me of being little and downing a whole bag of salt n vinegar chips while wincing through the pain. 2 bites in and couldn't take another so that was incredibly disappointing for a $28 sandwich. Ended up wrapping it up because I'm going to soak the salt out of the meat and repurpose it on top of an unsalted baked potato with melted cheese and a touch of sauerkraut depending on how salty the pastrami is after soaking. Collard greens: perfect texture on both the greens and the smoked pork inside. This is was also a bit on the saltier side and not in a good way. Other than the salt level I really can't complain. Sauces: the sweet and spicy reminded me of Popeyes sweet heat sauce or Thai sweet chili sauce which I like so that one wasn't bad at all. The sticky bbq sauce wasn't bad either, maybe a little too much of a smoke flavor but also not terrible at all. All together the food items, one beer, and one coke came to $74 which is absolutely not worth it at all. I usually like to give places a second try because as a chef myself you never know if it was an off day for the kitchen staff or something but with the price of the items I'm thinking it's a one and done deal. read more

We definitely loved the brisket, it was tender and flavorful, very satisfied with that and thought it was perfect. Oh, Chef Durney, how I love your Red Hook locations, but I unfortunately can not say the same about your Industry City location. It's nice to have there, and as I was roaming the area, I thought to myself, mmm, Hometown, but my experience was less than what I was expecting. Not a long line when I got there thankfully (it was a little chilly out). The line is super messy, unlike your Red Hook location. There are two cutters, and you may have to yell and reach over people to place and get your order, what is going on here? Why am I yelling over someone in-between cutter 1 and 2 to place my order with a cutter? For a while I thought that it was just bad line etiquette, but nope, it's just the design of the system. I must say though, the lady who was cutting my stuff, was super nice. Anyway, I order my food, a taco special of the day, brisket, sausage link, turkey, and mac n cheese. Let me break it down -Brisket, super, super lean, I asked for a fatty cut from the brisket, but the whole thing looked lean, it was difficult to eat and chew, and lacked any juice (visibly dry in the photo) -Sausage link - this was pretty good, could have used a little bit more of a 'bite' to the casing, but flavor was spot on, your sauces do not work for this though, might want to think about that -Turkey - as someone who was introduced to proper smoked turkey by Aaron Franklin, and have enjoyed it at your other location, this turkey was just okay, not much better than one i've made before -Taco, massive shell which was super dry, meat was saturated in it's own fat making the taco fall apart in 2 seconds, meh -Mac n Cheese - always a hit, cant complain about this one Overall, i'm sad to say that this location does not represent the quality that your Red Hook location does. Could it have been an off day, yes, it happens, but I wouldn't try this location again. For people who have never been to your other location, they may not know the difference. I've been to hometown multiple times in Redhook and it never disappoints! so when i was in industrial city it's no brainer for me to grab dinner here, it was sunday evening peak dinner hour so the lines are naturally long, it moved pretty quickly, I was suprised the menu is slightly different than the one at redhook, we ordered brisket, rib tips, and some fries. I have to say i'm pretty disappointed, first of all the meat is cold, the fries are luke warm, I wonder if all the meats were being transported from redhook location. I was a little disappointed w the selections, there's no wings or tacos options like the other location. overall, it was an expensive meal w mediocre experiences. the setting of the restaurant is self serving w industrial vibes, there's multiple photograph prints of brooklyn and brooklynites that I didn't find too attractive. We settled on ordering a brisket sandwich, the sticky ribs, and small sides of the collard greeen and Texas Mac and cheese. The good: Sticky ribs 5/5 These are smothered in their special sticky sauce which I was very tempted to buy. They are sweet yet salty, with a touch of honey, a zing of scallion, and some fried onion flakes to top them off. This was the only item I truly loved and enjoyed. Pass on: Brisket sandwich: 3.5/5 Some pieces of brisket on the sandwich were juicy and tender but some were tougher and drier. It was a good sandwich but not particularly memorable and needed more seasoning so I dipped it in the sticky rib sauce. Collard greens: 3/5 I think I just don't like collard greens so disregard my opinion on this it tasted ok. Texas Mac and Cheese: Flavor was ok but the macaroni was too soggy for me and I thought it would taste better if the cheese on top has been baked to add crisp. Got the $18 brisket sandwich the other day. I popped in because there was no line. I won't be going back to this location. After ordering, I go to pay and the prompts on the debit card machine include $4+ for a tip! I hadn't even received anything yet - my sandwich wasn't made yet. The sandwich maker didn't ask me any questions like "would you prefer fatty or lean"...and he didn't give me a sample of the meat (two common BBQ prompts that usually pay off in tips.) I put "no tip" and planned to leave a cash tip. The cashier saw I put "no tip" and walked over to the sandwich maker. When I got my sandwich it was 50% fat (not meat)...which was delicious btw, but also a total ripoff. These employees need more training...and Hometown needs to pay higher salaries so their employees aren't looking for the customers to pay them just to do their jobs. read more
