They use two types of sauces here vinegar-based and tomato based. I liked the vinegar-based hot sauce better. Overall, I loved the jalapeno sausage the most followed by the lean and then the fatty brisket. The person cutting my brisket was cutting them way too thick. They were more like slabs of meat than slices of meat. Mostly self-serve where you order the meat first and then seat yourself and eat. Also bus your own tables. Menus posted on the wall. Music playing. Bar area, self-serve water dispenser, utensils/napkins, to-go containers (which we did need) are in this area. One of two dining areas is in the same room. Longer tables, some communal, are in the next room, where we sat. Temp that day was in the 90s, was ok indoors but still could use ceiling fan/s like in the first room. Restrooms available. Meats are priced by 1/2 lb. Carved and weighed at the front counter. Ordered everything else and paid there too. Most of the food was prepped as we ordered so able to take a whole tray already. So be ready for a bit of wait on the line but not in getting the food. Got a number and someone brought our jerk rib tips, which were made-to-order. Our favorite was the brisket - very tender with some fatty parts. Pulled pork was slightly sweet, was ok. I wasn't into the Jerk rib tips' flavor by itself, but was better with ranch dressing it came with. Meats were not so salty which was great. Can add the bbq sauces if wanted. Fritos pie was just a small bag of chips with toppings and was overall a bit salty for me. At least we got to taste their chili. For sides: Large size @$12-13 is not that large but ok for sharing if getting a few sides. We liked the vinegary mashed potato salad and mac and cheese. They really have to figure out how to reduce these inefficiencies, at least on weekends. Now for the food, it's definitely amazing for NYC standards but not quite as good as Texas, in my opinion. Lines at all the big spots (Red Hook Tavern, Brooklyn Crab, and Hometown) were long, but we decided to wait it out and get food here. Lines was not just long but didn't move for a bit. Despite that we were able to get seating. Like many BBQ places, you order at the register and they'll give you whatever is already prepare and then bring over the rest of your order at your table. Best dish by far was the Korean sticky ribs. The pulled pork sandwich wasn't great; not hot at all, just room temperature. The Vietnamese wings had good flavor but the skin is very tight (it's an order of a few whole wings, not drums and flats). Cornbread and dill pickles were great, potato salad was a bit too vinegary for me. They had the US World Cup match on, but not the audio until after they scored a goal. Plenty of sitting room, only few tables outside but there's indoor sitting in the front and additional back room. We got brisket (.6lbs) , spare ribs (.75lbs), corn bread, and sides of Mac & cheese, Texas style pinto beans, hometown slaw and backyard potato salad. Meat was really good, our batch was cooked and seasoned just right, a bit expensive for the quantity it ended up being but definitely passing quality expectations. An institution in the Red Hook neighborhood, Hometown is one of the top BBQ spots in NYC. We came for a quick snack and ordered 1/2 pound of the brisket. Great spot with great food! I looked up BBQ in a non BBQ region. This place fits the bill with 1st class BBQ!

If you don't already know, the line is LONG and goes very slow. You'll get most of your food right when you order and they will usually offer drink orders while you're in line which makes the wait slightly more tolerable. The real winners here are the classics: the brisket, the mac n cheese, and the cornbread. Each of these were 5 star items. I would stay away from the Vietnamese chicken wings and Korean short ribs - they weren't bad, but they don't shine as much as the brisket and classic bbq does. The other sides were ok, but if you're just getting the collard greens and Cole slaw to try to be healthy, just don't. Go all in on the meats and you'll be happy! read more

Gotta say that this was an extremely disappointing trip to have made. For a place that has so much hype behind it, it was sad to have left throwing away a third of what we ordered. Brisket - cooked well but sad the only flavors that were to accompany it, were sauces on the table that probably wouldn't be missed if they were refilled with sweet baby rays. The bar has a variety of creative cocktails and also had Fiddlehead on tap when we visited (bonus points). Now to the BBQ. Prices were a bit steep, but for the location and quality of cooking I have no complaints. My goto to judge real BBQ is the beef brisket and Hometown's was amazingly perfectly cooked and flavorful without sauce. In addition to the BBQ, I have to mention their potato salad!! Long considered one of the top Texas style BBQ joins in NYC, hometown bbq is legit. Reminded me of Terry Blacks bbq in Austin. Although Hometown doesn't call itself TX bbq rather southern , it's a bit of fusion . On my last visit they featured pork bahn mi, Korean sticky ribs , along with classic brisket, ribs, pulled pork etc. The latter is available sandwich or by 1/2 lbs prices. Naturally there are classic side dishes on offer as well. Like Mac n cheese, slaw, beans , etc . There was a steady line to order , and there is no table service. Place is pretty much one order counter and a bar with communal seating all around . Everything was solid from brisket to pastrami and ribs were good. I thought brisket and pastrami were a touch dry and needed bbq sauce. As far as BBQ goes in NYC, this might be as good as it gets. The perfect place to stop at before an IKEA shopping spree or for a giant BBQ meal. The atmosphere brought to mind traditional BBQ shops in Texas, which was an instant plus. You order as much meat as want from the menu on the wall, and they serve it up in front of you. Service is fast and easy. Sandwiches and bacon take extra time to make, but still come out relatively quickly. The Pastrami bacon was $10 a slice, slightly outrageous, but insanely good. Crispy and charred on the outside, with an incredible concentration of flavor in the meat. The brisket sandwich was messy and gorgeous.
