The ambience at Honcho is 10/10, but the food typically falls short for me. I have dined in 4 or 5 times and the only food that I have gotten and really been impressed with so far is the Chicken Tamale Pie, probably two years ago. I returned to Honcho for lunch with a group of friends yesterday, raving to them about how amazing the Chicken Tamale Pie is and how excited I was to get it. Unfortunately, the cornbread crust on my entree was burnt to a crisp, to the point that I'm shocked they allowed it to leave the kitchen. I don't like making a commotion and ate a few bites, but ultimately had to send it back. The waitress handled the situation very kindly and offered chicken tortilla soup as an alternate entree, to which I accepted and would rate a 6/10 (not a fan of dark meat chicken). I was pleasantly surprised to find that our waitress comp'd both of my entrees on the bill. Full disclosure - I went two days in a row and I'm not ashamed to admit it. First day, I decided to go with the Carne Asada tacos which were pretty good. Big chunks of steak with a very tasty verde sauce. My only complaint, and this is just me being nit picky, is that they didn't have a house hot sauce/salsa. I know that's a dumb thing to whine about - I acknowledge that. During my second visit (today), I went with the rice bowl and loved that way more than the tacos - tons of flavors. The dining area moves fast paced, yet you can have great memories and conversations with your friends/family that you are with. The #1 tip: order the house made donuts. They are arguably the top 5 desserts I have ever eaten. They are so fresh, crispy, airy, and delicious. The caramel and chocolate dipping sauces are perfect condiments for them. I got the rice bowl which is a more of a Latin/Asian fusion, and I loved it. I am definitely coming back and ordering this again. Staff was engaging and entertaining. This is a combo business that has a full service bar, sit down restaurant and a coffee shop which is the only aspect of this business that I am rating. For my first drink here I ended up getting a Cafe Latte that was very well made and definately to my liking. I ended up drinking the coffee in their lounge area that is shared between the bar and coffee shop where the area is a is a bit rustic, in a nice way, and is a great spot to sit down for some quiet time or for a chat with friends and enjoy your drink. Aside from Lattes this business also makes a full assortment of coffee drinks and has some pastries for sale as well. I had no idea this place even existed until recently. I don't know how I discovered it, but I made sure to come up and have lunch here with my friend today since I'm always looking for new spots to try. Pulling in, the place is super cool and well decorated. There's a coffee shop AND a restaurant together. The menu here's pretty simple in the fact that they don't have 10 million things going on. Some people dig that, but honestly, as of late, sometimes stick to what you know, okay? And they do tacos very good here! I went with the Standard Tacos since I wasn't feeling to adventurous, and they were very very good considering they were probably the most boring thing on the menu. I wanted to get their Burrito, but passed since I wasn't starving. Portions were good and I was full after two tacos. I can't remember what my friend got, but she got the mac and cheese side dish and I tasted it since she couldn't finish it all. Fantastic for sure. Everything's ala carte here, so no combos. Normally that bothers me, but since I love this place and vibe here so much, it's all good. I didn't get a chance to try the rice or refried beans, because as stated earlier, I wasn't starving and didn't want to gorge myself and have tons of leftovers. I really wanted to love this place, but wow... what a disappointment. Honcho has such a cool vibe, but once you actually look around, you start to realize how dirty it is. We recently sat at the bar, and I couldn't unsee the mess. The coolers behind the bar looked like they hadn't been wiped down in weeks. Streaks and stains, and even rotten fruit just sitting there. Dirty pitchers and funnels were lying around (which means they're probably being reused instead of washed ), and a gallon of juice was left out with no condensation... meaning it had been sitting there forever. Maybe this is suppose to be out, but others were ion the cooler so I don't think so. The liquor glasses and toppers? Dusty and sticky. These are things that should be cleaned nightly, and clearly they're not. The staff is obnoxiously loud and some are horribly dirty. They talk/yell at guests from across the bar as if their "crew" is the only one in the establishment. I actually like that there isn't a strict uniform, but there should be some kind of dress code. I'll just say one thing, the bartender looked like she rolled out of bed, threw on a tank top that was cut to be razorback, some leggings, and called it a day. Not exactly the best look for someone handling drinks and food. I digress. Then came the food. First our menus arrived crusted with some kind of dried up queso on it??. Gross. I ordered a drink, and it came with a rotten lemon as a garnish, not dehydrated or aged. Rotten. HOW does that even happen? We got the house salsas to start, but no plates. Then the tacos came out. I got one fish and one brussels sprout. No limes. The shells were dry, the fish was dry, and the Brussels sprouts taco was so burnt that all I could taste was char. I couldn't finish it. My boyfriend got the fish taco too and to combat the dryness he absolutely drowned it in hot sauce and salsa. Then he ordered the Korean Pork Arepa from the specials menu, which was easily the best thing we had. But still, you guessed it... DRY. We honestly thought we were being punked. It was fairly busy and they were able to get us a spot in a cozy seating area near the bar. Since the weather was nice, the doors were open so it was an inviting and great way to chill while we spent time together. We started out with Queso Dip ($10) and it was gone fast as we all loved this baked offering. My bride ordered the Pollo Asado ($5.50) and Sweet Potato ($5) tacos - and loved them both. Giving 3 stars because of the encounter we had with a random staff member and our toddler... I was holding my daughter in my lap while I was eating and she had her head over my shoulder. Met a friend for lunch at Honcho. Service was average. They didn't come back and refill Water or soda and we had to flag them down to do so. We both had the mocktail with pomegranate and ginger. Mine had a few pomegranate pieces in it and I could not taste any ginger. The flavor was very light however my friend got hers a little after mine and hers was darker in color and had candied ginger pieces in it as well - they looked like 2 different drinks. I had the chicken tortilla soup which was very good and she had the spicy tomato which was actually very spicy. She had the chicken tostadas and ate one. She mixed her rice and beans to eat them and said they were good that way. I had the enchiladas however I don't like beans so I just ate the rice with it which was very dry and flavorless. To be honest the enchilada also had no flavor and I was not a fan. I only ate half. What I should have done was order another bulgogi taco which are a la carte. That was the best thing I had there and it had good flavor. The portion is small though as it's a traditional street taco size and you only get one. We also got the donuts for dessert that comes with 2 sauces- the chocolate sauce was ok but did not shine like the caramel dipping sauce did. Would I eat here again.
