A dog park is only at good as the dog owners who go there. Sure, the maintenance staff do their best to refill the bag containers and take out the trash. But the owners must watch their dogs and pick up after them!! We stick to the small dog side mainly as the owners there seemed more friendly and watchful. I do appreciate that there is an agility course side too, for those active dogs who need a little more action. Just go during times outside of busy hours. read more

BEWARE: Irresponsible dog owners at this park. I'm usually never compelled to write reviews, however I feel like I should this time. This time we encountered a woman and her a large gray Great Dane, who we have seen in a dog fight here before. During our visit, the larger section of the park was closed, so she entered the smaller, enclosed gravel area. As soon as her dog was off-leash, he ran straight to us, where we were with our smaller female dog and our male Malinois. I leashed our smaller dog to gauge her reaction, and when her dog seemed friendly, I felt more at ease and unleashed her. However, her Great Dane then fixated on our male Malinois, circling and attempting to mount him--behavior that is both dominant and aggressive. My husband, who was mid-training with our Malinois, repeatedly and politely asked the woman to recall her dog. Despite this, she responded dismissively, insisting her dog "just wants to play," while half-heartedly chasing after him. Her lack of control made the situation escalate as her dog continued to stalk ours, creating stress for both dogs. Concerned and frustrated, my husband warned her, "Please call your dog. I don't want to hurt him, but I will if he hurts mine." Finally, she leashed her dog, and we moved to a different area to continue training. I'm not stupid, I know it's a public park- however we still have the responsibility to keep our dogs and other dogs safe. While you are entitled to enjoying the park, just like we are, if someone is asking you to remove your dog from a potentially dangerous situation... you should probably do it. Not long after, her friends arrived, and she immediately painted herself as the victim, accusing my husband of threatening her dog for being friendly. I overheard this and called her out: "That's not true. Your dog was aggressive, stalking ours, you have no control over him and he has no recall skills." Her male friend responded by shushing me repeatedly and dismissively, saying, "De-escalate." Interestingly, he had no issue listening to her false narrative but tried to silence me, when I was calmly recalling the story. This isn't the first incident with her dog. I've seen him aggressively engage with other large dogs, including a pretty bad fight between him and Bordeaux or some other XL Bully. Which we saw her and her friends trying to pull those dogs apart before they started ripping each other apart. So it's difficult to trust her when she says his behavior isn't aggressive but this isn't the first instance I've seen him be aggressive to other large male dogs (that are strangers.) The irony? Her friends' dogs were well-behaved, friendly, independent and explored the space before introducing themselves as they approached ours with no problem, while hers had to remain leashed until we left. If our dog was the aggressor, wouldn't he be stalking her dog and unable to control? This park can be great, but owners who refuse to take responsibility for their dogs and make excuses put others at risk. If you visit, be vigilant and aware as accidents can happen at any given moment. read more

Ok I know I am beating a "dead horse" here, but I just want to vent a bit. Being layed off wasn't fun and more then a little stressful. The dog park helped to reduce the stress. Hondo is one of the better dog parks in Hillsboro, however there are rules, and they should be followed. For example: 1) This is a DOG park, not a people park, this will be clarified... 2) No food or drink (people or puppy) is to enter the park. This will prevent dogs from jumping on you. 3) Children (strollers etc) are not allowed. Nobody wants a dog to knock a stroller over (I have seen it happen). 4) When entering and exiting dog park, please allow dogs (and owners) to completely enter/exit and totally lock area before continuing. These are very basic rules but following them makes a good dog park even better. read more

There are water areas provided, doggy bags and trash cans. The parking lot is really small though and there's not many adjacent parking options. There's also multiple other fenced in areas all around for the dogs to rotate between grassy areas vs the dirt areas. This is a beautiful park and the best one I've been to!! Heard about it while at another park in Hillsboro, so decided to check it out. As soon as we got to Hondo, we were amazed! Not only were there a bunch of dogs, but they were all very friendly and kind to my dog (who can be shy at times). Owners were nice as well! There are 3 sections, but we have only gone to 2 (small dog area & mixed dog area) so far. My small dog & I like the mixed dog area more because it is larger and has a gravel path to walk on. Sometimes the small dog park will be a little lonely, so there will be small dogs in the mixed area. Will be coming here more often!! Highly recommend!! read more

I did a lot of research into finding a dog park that may be a good fit for me and my dog. After reading reviews I decided on Hondo. My dog is medium sized, about 35-40lbs and timid. I found hondo which posts that it has a training gravel area, a large dog area, and a small and timid dog area. This is very specifically pointed out on their website and on the signage posted out front of the small dog area, that the small area is for small and timid dogs. That being said, be aware if you have a medium sized timid dog and want to go in on Sunday evenings, there will be a group of people there that will harass you about your dog not being small enough and calling it aggressive without any evidence. However, it is a public space and I will continue to use it. My dog has gained a little bit more confidence around other dogs and no longer cowers and flops over submissively the minute another dog moves towards her. The small dog area is large enough for her to run after a thrown ball but small enough that I can stand anywhere in the area and see her and the other dogs near her. The big dog area is absolutely massive with hills and you are not able to have line of sight on your dog the whole time you are in there. In the few days I've been coming to this dog park, I have heard and seen multiple altercations in the big dog area. read more

I would consider Hondo to be the intermediate choice for dog parks in the Orenco Station area - I consider PCC Rock Creek to be the best choice. The area is fairly well used, so it's likely your dog will at least have one other dog to play with there at any given time. Parking is somewhat limited, but there is overflow parking across the street at the stadium. There's also the #47 Trimet bus and the free Hillsboro Link that have stops close by. The items that prevent me from viewing Hondo more favorably are: 1) The substantial gap between the small and large dog fence bothers me (I did report this to the city - and I'd encourage others to do so too) 2) Some owners on the small or large side are completely aloof/disinterested in watching their dogs, which is extremely irresponsible of them & potentially a liability if their dog hurts another badly enough. I've had 2 incidents in the small dog side where I've had to remove an attacking dog from my puppy & the owner has done nothing to help. I do know how to remove an attacking dog & am not afraid of doing so, but if you're not used to doing that, you'll be in trouble trying to get your dog away from an attacking one. 3) Some owners bring dogs completely unsuited for or are not allowed in a dog park - like a female dog in heat (that happened just 3 days ago), aggressive dogs, or visibly sick dogs. 4) The large dog area frequently has dogs that are aggressive and get into "semi-serious" fights with other dogs - meaning if they weren't broken up, there would've been injury to the dogs involved. I tried taking my puppy into the large dog area twice so far when it's less used & alas, on both occasions she's been bitten too hard by large dogs that don't have enough bite inhibition, so we have to stick to the small dog side. I would not recommend going to the large dog side unless your dog is at least 50 lbs and in good health (like not elderly or disabled) to be able to defend themselves from the larger dogs. If it matters to you, the majority of the large dogs are Huskies, German Shepherds, and American Staffordshire Terriers (aka "Pit Bulls"). Original review: This was my first visit to Hondo with my new puppy Pepper. She found a playmate her age and size right away! The small/timid dog area is really the place to be here - it's far better cared after (meaning less poop left unpicked up), it's mostly nice green grass & there's water available. The small dog area isn't as well used as the "all dog"/big dog area; during my visit there were 4 other small dogs (+ mine) vs. maybe 30 in the all/big dog area. However, upon seeing the behavior of the big dogs, I'm not putting my small pup in there anytime soon - several of the big dogs there were dog aggressive: meaning starting fights and one charged the small dog fence and was barking and growling aggressively at the small dogs (and the fence is only maybe 6 ft tall, a determined big dog could easily jump that fence). The owners of the big dogs were not close by either - most of the owners of the large dogs were congregating together talking or a few wondered off away from their dogs on cell phone calls - so they wouldn't be able to quickly stop their dog if something happens - like the dog fights I witnessed. I'd recommend small dog owners be cautious of their surroundings even in the fenced in area for smaller dogs - I could see a potential tragedy with a big dog with a high prey drive or aggressive tendencies seeing the smaller dogs running around and playing as something to attack/kill & jump that fence. Speaking of fences, I wanted to note that there's a huge gap in the fence between the big and little dog areas that a dog could slip through. I'm going to report that to the city. Hopefully that'll get fixed. read more

We used to love Hondo's big play area and the little path. It's now become apparent that they need better drainage in both the grassy areas and the gravel space. The last few times we've tried to go (over approx a six month period) the urine smell was SO strong that we got out of the truck then got back in and left after five minutes in the park. I had to give my dog a bath and clean my truck when we got home from the smell on her paws. Winkelman is across town but it's a much better space. I'm more than happy to make the trip. read more

Although my dog is a bitch (har har har...) and would rather occupy herself with a toy (preferably one that squeaks) than a K9 buddy, she still enjoys herself here quite a bit. The pros are obvious. This park is maintained much better than others, and the people and dogs are generally nice. I go here to be the owner of multiple dogs vicariously! You can meet tons of people here, but I prefer to get to know the dogs. I must warn you: I have my favorites! Minus 1 star for: - Owners not picking up pet waste; it is worse than ever as of late. They use overseeding times as an opportunity to be lazy, but the poo is easily distinguishable from dirt. - My dog getting fleas here a number of times, despite timely and rigorous anti-flea treatments. If your dog has fleas STAY HOME. And I mean FLEA-RIDDEN dogs. Poor things. I think that's neglect. Do you not pet them?! - Instances of idiot owners. PLEASE - do not train/let your HUGE monstrosity of a dog JUMP any fence at the dog park. Don't talk on your cell phone and watch your dog crap and walk off. I have brought my dog here a few times a week for the last two months and this has been the best dog park I have been to in Oregon. It is well kept up, most of the dogs are nice and respectful and even if they aren't, the owners have been quick to set them straight. Some owners don't pick up their dog's poop but seem to be out of not paying attention to their dog and not seeing them use the bathroom rather than not caring and just leaving it and it is rare to see this happen. Stick to the trail and you won't possibly step in anything. read more

Another favorite dog park of mine. There's a small dog park option. A large mixed area with a track to walk which I love to do while my dog runs circles. There's also another small park with an obstacle course and pebbles for the ground so it makes rainy days less messy. Yay! A nice dog park & it's the closest one to us as well! Hondo is a great park with all year round options. There's a winter section, the larger spring/summer/fall section and a little dog section. Though our dog is a lil' pug, she doesn't like little dogs. To say she's weird...well yup. So we usually go in the big dog section & she can chase/be chased to her hearts desire. I'm not a fan of the winter section that's gravel mainly because the pug doesn't like it on her delicate paws so she'll just sit on my foot instead. People are pretty good about picking up after their dogs. The main downfall is some owners who don't get dog behavior. Dogs get in fights and sticking your arm in the middle of it? No. Dogs growl at each other, it's okay, they're not about to rip each other's throat out. Shrieking and screaming helps no one and it's annoying. Nor is passively aggressively saying "people just don't know how to handle dogs, what IDIOTS" is just rude. This is my biggest frustration about any and all dog parks - the stupid owners. It stops people from letting their big dog chase our tiny pug because they think we'll freak out - no, please let her be chased so she's dead at home for the next few hours. GEEZE. /rant. read more

8/27/2011 Someone left the gate open & my puppy was running loose in the parking lot. Not surprised as gates get left open at Hondo far more than any of other dog park we go to. +++ Yesterday the gate was left open 3 times in 1 hour. +++ ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST ONE GATE SHUT when entering (obviously both shut once you are in), that is what a double gate is for. Least conscientious dog owners at this dog park by far. There are two better dog parks in the area, IMO. People who *RUN* HONDO? Great. The people who go to the park? Its a 50/50. Puppy was captured, the guy apologized for letting him out. We can be found at ______ in the future. ..... Been going here off and on since 2007. Have gone, maybe, 40 times? Who knows as it is so sporadic. We have often times had to leave either because someone was doing something outside of the rules, or it was not open (it is weather depended in winter). The problem with it not being open all the time? People forget the rules -- or never bothered to figure them out the first time. Everyday it is, often, a different issue. Our main dog park? It is always consistent -- and why shouldn't it be? How hard is it to 1.) watch your dog 2.) clean up after them 3.) get involved if your dog is getting overrun, or doing the running over of another. I still go over here for various reasons - ie: want to take the edge off my puppy, then do a few errands, then go to our main dog park for hours. Sometimes I just want to give it a second chance. I like that I can see my puppy with nothing in the way to block my view, but I am ready for mayhem to happen, and, often it does. Yesterday we had to sit in the car (not popular with you know who) and wait til an owner realized their large breed puppy jumped the fence from the all dog section into the little dog section. (I had just seen this very big puppy running the fence with my puppy 5 minutes before). After 20 minutes the owner never did realize their puppy had "gone missing". (after 1 minute I am looking all over for my dog! I can't imagine 20 minutes going by) Then, the puppy was in the "small/timid section" so long that, apparently, someone else saw the dog being in there and decided to bring THEIR big dog in the small dog section. Oh, forgot to mention: people do not know the definition of TIMID. Timid means ALL THE TIME, not just with some kinds of dogs. Several people left not just us. Then again, some people stayed and watched their little tiny dogs get bowled over by the very heavy puppy. The fences should not be less than 5 feet tall so that this does not happen (or very, very rarely happens -- it never happens at our other dog park!) Why not say something? Who am I to say something to? The owner is not around. Drop the puppy over the fence back into the big dog section? What, and wait for it to jump the fence again and again? That would surely 1.) reinforce the jumping and 2.) show other dogs they can jump the fence 3.) I help maintain our main dog park (elsewhere) on a very active basis and can't take them all on. Walk the dog around to the front gate and in properly to the all dog section? Then I have to take my dog with me, too.....two dogs, one leash. Nice puppy who was without supervision, just was way too big for my puppy to play with (big goofy paws have come down on the back of my previous dog and I thought he broke his back - I am not going to the vet again for something I can see coming). I had to leave yesterday. I always ask myself....why even bother? The worst case scenario at our main dog park never deals with the kinds of things we have experienced at Hondo. I so wish I could give some stars to those who maintain this park (decent stars) and other stars to the people who use the dog park (0-1 star as many are there for the wrong reasons). But, what do I expect? It is in Orenco, afterall. Orenco has the only New Seasons ("Friendliest Store In Town"?) where the cashiers will not even speak to me or my husband, separate or together. Me? Whatever (I am a real person, grew up in Iowa, down to earth, I believe in Win-Win). My husband (most everyone likes him)? Really. Wow. Yeah, Orenco has an attitude and this dog park, unfortunately, often gets that attitude. It is too bad.....it could be nice. read more

This is simply the best dog park I have ever been to. The dog owners I have met are friendly and it is just plain fun to people/dog watch here. The winter park is a great idea, it is on sand and makes for a quick clean up for the more adventurous dogs. The good weather park is huge, with some small rolling hills and a walking path. Benches abound for relaxing if you do not mind risking the affection of a pack of dogs. Reading on their website I found out it was named after a police dog that was killed while working - there is even a monument for him. Enjoy! read more

Fun for all! My Pom and Chi are so so much happier since we founded this park! Three sections in the park. Small/timid dog area, all dog area, and winter gravel area. It's huge here! Everybody is so nice, and we haven't came upon a grumpy dog once yet! They close up the two grassy sections random days/times regularly to make sure the grass stays green and not matted down and muddy from all these four legged little (and big!) guys frolicking about. :) So your guaranteed a lovely so fresh and so clean park!! Definitely the best dog park we've found in the SW area so far; dogs & humans can happily spend an entire afternoon here! Potty bags are readily available, and the grounds are very well maintained. The gravel area is great in bad weather, as it cuts down on the muddiness. In good weather, the main grassy area has it all; a hill that's great for playing fetch, trees to sniff, well-placed benches and a flat open grassy space. Love Love Love the walking track in the grass area (helpful for trying to train your dog to walk with you off-leash), but when the dog park & stadium are both busy, parking's a beotch. wish the hours would be extended - to 24/7! read more

Hondo is our favorite dog park in Portland Metro. We prefer to travel 30 minutes to Hillsboro than just 5 minutes to beer swigging, don't give a shit owners who frequent Normandale Park in NE. So far there's never been an issue at Hondo. Dirty water has been pooling by the benches in both the small and large doggie sections. We've met so many nice dog lovers here. Banfield was our go-to park, but they just keep getting lamer with their parking lot expansion, inoperable doors, and stringent vaccine (money, money) requirements. read more

Visited the Hondo Dog Park today. . . amazing in every sense of the word. Three parks in one- big dog, little dog, and an agility park. Beautifully planted with lots of trees and numerous metal red benches under the trees. Water features and a wadding pool for playing in the heat. So fun to watch the dogs enjoy the pool. We were at the Hillsboro Ron Tonkin Fields for our Grandson's tournament this weekend. We have 3 dogs that we love to take with us when we can. After an hour at this park, having a great time, their tung's were hanging. The rest of the tournament the 3dogs slept in the shade of the old maple tree while we were able to enjoy watching baseball. Love this dog park!!! PS. This is a great off leash area that's close to home. It's is nice that there are two areas, one for larger dogs and one for small dogs. I have a small dog and do wish the small area was a bit bigger. I've been only a couple of times. Meet the nicest people there and the dog LOVES going. My wife and kids take the dog fairly often. Only real complaint I have is the minimal parking on site. This is a very nice dog park, located near the hillsboro stadium. It is well-maintained, clean, and has several places to sit. There are spots with shade for hot days and the place is quiet. There are two sections so little dogs can have their space and an area that is weatherized for those rainy days. This place is AMAZING! There are 3 sections divided by fencing. One for smaller dogs, one for training purposes and the middle section is the main off leash area. There's a gravel path that circles the grass field area so humans can walk while their dogs play. Our 7 month old black lab definitely had to work her way up to this place. SO MANY DOGS! It can be intimidating for a little pup so make sure your dog is experienced with other dogs before coming to the main area. That's why it's nice having the different sections because you can start in the smaller areas. Taking my girl back again today! She had so much fun and made so many friends, human and pups read more

We are new dog owners, and this was our first dog park! I think we were more nervous than our dog :) There were a couple "dog parents" that had no control over their dogs, but no major fights. There was also a noticeable disruption to the flow of things when a couple brought their hamburgers and french fries into the park and sat down. Seriously? There were quite a few big dogs here, and it didn't appear the small dog area was open. Our dog is 50lbs, so it wasn't a problem for us, but I think a little dog might get overwhelmed here. There was plenty of space to run, and some really nice owners. We are so happy to have this place close to our house - we've already been back a couple times! read more

Two smaller sections - one gravel w a couple agility items and another for small breeds that don't want to mix. My dogs loved running along the top of the small hill. Great dog park with a section for both small dogs and bigger dogs. I haven't had too many problems with aggressive dogs here and most dogs (and owners, I might add) are pretty relaxed and easy going.
