The Gabriel Summer dog park is one of the better dog parks in the southwest part of Portland. Some things I like about it: - It's fully grassed - lots of evening shade - tables and chairs - plenty of tennis balls - there's a water spigot to refill the water jugs and bowls. - It's fairly large with some hills, so you can get some space if your dog doesn't get along with another dog. - There's a trash can within reach of the fence, so don't have to exit and enter to drop of your dog's poop. There's two major downsides. One is the fence. It's not very high, and it's single-gated, so you need to keep an eye on your pup if they like greeting dogs at the gate. The other downside is there's no separate big and small dog area, but it's a large park so you can kind of carve out your own space if you want to. Overall, we like this park! The grass and shade is a huge plus. We'll be coming here all the time. read more

The "summer" dog park at Gabriel Park is a large, sloped area with a central path and shade around the edges. The entry gate from the parking lot is low, so heads up if you have a jumper. (Also, be aware that the entry road is a one/way counterclockwise circle; there are few arrows to make that clear.) I've read some negative reviews about careless owners and rough dogs, so I was nervous to go, but everyone was responsible and friendly when I was there. This review speaks specifically to my experience at the winter park and is directed towards some of the dog owners during my visit there. I'm the lucky dog-mom of three large and adorable English Labradors, and I decided to try out this park. At first, the people in the park seemed friendly enough. The dogs were all pretty social. A few minutes after we settled in, a couple of dogs entered the park, bolting towards dogs, completely unwelcoming. They began to pick fights with other dogs and even drew blood on a smaller dog that was taken away by its owner. The owners of the aggressive dogs sat idly by leaning against the fence, not doing a darn thing. I yelled to them to grab their dogs and that they were hurting others. They did not budge. Another dog owner enters several minutes later and the same thing. The dog races in, starts a fight with other dogs. The owner says and does nothing. To dog owners: please be careful when allowing your dog to roam this park. I share my experience to hopefully spread awareness that dog owners should be respectful and responsible dog owners in common areas, such as an off leash dog park. If your dog is an aggressor, please get your dog properly evaluated and trained so they can play nicely with everyone else. No one wants to leave the dog park with an injured dog. read more

Pay no mind to know-it-all transplants like Anthony N and his ilk. Been taking our various dogs here for 15 years without issue, aside from the rare bad owner as an outlier, which is anywhere. The dog park is just fine, and in fact pretty great if you know how to handle yourself and your dog, and how to monitor dog behavior and how to interact and engage appropriately with other dog owners. If you're not feeling up to any of that when you visit, there is a whole network of trails around/between both OLA where you can walk your dog and mutter to yourself about how much better it was in Podunk, MO or whatever small town you ran away from. If the park had gone downhill in the last couple years it is, like many other things in Portland today, almost always due to those kind of new people. read more

Sorry excuse for a dog park. What it has going for it: - parking near dog run - water source in dog run - large run What it has going against it: - inadequate gates, entry and fencing - no separate dog runs for large and small dogs - dirty and grass ground cover make for a muddy mess when/after it rains - limited seating - limited shade - poop bag dispenser but no poop bags - run is only open during the summer Seriously this is a sad attempt at a dog run. The fences and gates are dangerous for dogs that are escape artists. Fences are like 3 ft tall and fencing on the sides of the adjacent tennis court, it like 2 ft tall. There is no double gate entry. The water source that they have is pretty much a hose that lays on the ground. The dog owners of this area that use this place deserve a lot better and so do their dogs. read more

The Summer Dog Park is okay, needs some caretakers for sure no one seems to do anything but mow it. The dumb thing is they keep sinking money into the hot turd that is the Winter Dog Park. All that you will get at the Winter Dog Park is rabies as your dog and possibly you get bit by a problematic dog with a dumdum owner trying to pick up chicks and not paying attention to his pitbull. The Winter Park problem is that it is so small that the bad dogs get to control the whole area and you have nowhere to get away from them, and it is now just a large litterbox full of hidden poop because the idiots filled it with sand, what genius thought that up? BUT hey at least the Summer Side is open from June to July so you get two months of the year to use the real dog park. Whoever is in charge of this park system is an absolute failure and an idiot. read more

Been going here all summer now. This is by far the best dog park we have found in Portland! A lot of attentive owners and great dogs. Most dogs are friendly with a few exceptions. Poop not being picked is still an issue but it seems like there are more people picking up far more than their share. Kudos! Starting to get very muddy. It's the closest park to me, and that's really the only part I enjoy. The summer park has a few lawn chairs that get peed on all day, and just shade from trees. The flat bit of the summer park is filled with holes and a definite hazard for running dogs. The winter park has a covered bit, but even for a sand park, it's filthy. Not to mention a lot of regulars don't pick up after their dogs at all. I've had multiple awful expertises with people that go there. One man hit my dog with an open hand, and another one threatened to kill her and sick his mastiff on my partner. My dog is a bit jumpy, so I totally understand when people get annoyed by that, but physical violence and threatening behavior is over the line. read more

I used to love this park and it's beautiful surroundings, having lived nearby with dogs for many years, but more recently, it's become too crowded with people who don't pick up after their dogs. When I've let some people know their dog has pooped, they've actually ignored me and left it on the ground. I have picked up many piles of poop not left by my dog. Also, many people have become too busy socializing with their friends, or looking at their phones, to pay attention to their dogs at Gabriel Park. I've actually stayed in the park after dark and closing time, waiting for an owner who literally dropped their dog off and went elsewhere, leaving the dog unattended! The reason I no longer go to Gabriel Dog Park is dogs have attacked my German Shepherd without provocation on more than one occasion. The worst instance was when a pit bull-type dog started getting super agressive with my Shepherd during a game of chase. I could see my dog wasn't liking it, and was trying to run away, so I called her over to me. She came to me, but the pit bull followed, and grabbed my dog by the face and neck with her teeth, literally hanging off of her at one point. My dog twisted, got away and ran again, but she was panting and scared, and other dogs caught on to the situation and joined in with the pit, cornering her near the East side of the park by the tennis courts. I was able to chase the other dogs off, but the pitbull type dog persisted, and kept trying to get around me and at my dog, even when I was yelling NO and being assertive with her. I was afraid I was going to get bit as well, and it was at least 2 whole minutes before the owner finally noticed and casually sauntered over to get her dog, without so much as a sideways glance at me. This was despite my repeated and loud calling for help - by the end of this experience, I was screaming. I immediately left without saying anything directly to her, because I was so angry and upset. I no longer bring my dog to small enclosed parks like Gabriel Park Dog Park, because it seems that dog owners feel comfortable paying less attention to what their dog is doing in that type of dog park, and the risk of my dog getting attacked again, and becoming fear aggressive herself is just too great. read more

I agree with other reviewers that the summer park absolutely needs double gating. I've had a few hairy experiences getting in and out. As far as dog parks go, this one is quite nice. It's a big area to really let you spread out. There are lots of chairs and bowls for dogs. This park also has running water to allow you to fill the bowls. Trees surround the park and there are two nice ones inside to allow for shade. Like any park, there can be people/dogs that you wouldn't want to be around, but if you keep an eye on yourself and your dog, it's a nice place. I also particularly like the walking trail in the woods and that there is a winter dog park (although that one isn't as nice or large as the summer one). read more

I walked by with my puppy to check it out. As I was leaving I heard a dog fight. Like BAD with a capital B... people and dogs screaming. After a couple more times (different days) I walked by with my puppy and all seemed ok, so we tried it a few times. There were a few aggressive dogs, but nothing terrible. On the third visit, another large dog flat out attacked my puppy. Also, the owner wasn't paying attention and let it go way too long while I am trying to lift my dog up and push away this large aggressive dog. In short, it's a lovely park.. but the group is hit or miss. I won't be going back. read more

We love Gabriel Park. Very attentive owners and most of the dogs are quite friendly and ready to play nicely with others. There will always be issues at dog parks. This park is gorgeous, at least in the summer. That's when the grassy part opens up. It has some flaws, however. Little dogs must mix with big dogs, and because it's a great park for ball-chasing, little dogs stand a good chance of getting run over. It's also one of those parks where you occasionally run into aggressive or unruly dogs. When Portland gets some breaks in the weather, the vibe of all those unexercised big dogs can be amped up and a bit out of control. More than once I've seen a friendly game of chase turn into a pack chasing some frightened dog with no owner intervention. Other days, however, the mood is calm and friendly, and the dogs all get along. On those days, we stay for awhile. read more

The worst dog park I have ever been to in terms of other dogs. My dog (a yellow lab, by no means aggressive) always get beat up. The majority of dogs seem to be rescues, which I am supportive of, but they are, by in large aggressive, and do not socialize well with new dogs. Today I was on the park for a total of 30 seconds. As soon as my dog was inside the park he had one large husky trying to rip his ear off and then was quickly put on his back and surrounded by an additional 5 large dogs who began biting at his belly and ears. The owners of these dogs didn't do anything about it. They just stood 20 yards away and yelled at their dogs to stop. This is what makes Gabriel Park such a terrible dog park, the culture of the dog owners. I had to pull a group of huskies back to get to my dog and I then had to carry him out. I was looking for a dog park while I was out running errands and ran across this one. I like the off leash areas as my dog just wants to play ball. My only issue with this park was the amount of dog poop that owners DID NOT BOTHER to pick up. That's just irresponsible and rude to others who want to use the park. read more

It's true that sometimes people here are a little strange, and sometimes dogs don't get along with other dogs. Also, sometimes you bump into people you don't know and maybe wouldn't want to invite over for coffee. This is what is commonly referred to as a "park." Gabriel Park is really nice--lots of space for pups with high energy, and I've found most owners friendly and attentive. Ppl tend to bring water and extra poop bags, which is also nice. Of course, there have been exceptions now and then, but because I'm a responsible dog owner, I can take my dog home and try again another day. The winter dog park is a little schlubby but it certainly does the trick. My dog always comes home worn out and content. read more

Good dog park. Central to much of SW, fenced and enclosed, and sandy so it stays relatively dry. Dogs get a lot of exercise with the slope and it's big enough to really launch a chuck-it ball. This park is absolutely the best, maybe not by Portland standards but if the park was in Boston this place would be the rock star of dog parks. This large completely fenced in park has chairs and a vast shade tree for the dog walkers to relax while the dogs run around like crazy. There is plenty of parking, easy to find and perfect at least for our dogs. Run 'em around and wear them out. read more

It's a gorgeous large grassy area with good parking. I really wish there was a small dog section because I have to be so vigilant with all the big guys running around. Some owners don't pay attention and it can be complete chaos. I've left many times because my little guy is getting harassed and knocked around by large dogs with absentee owners. It's just not safe a lot of the time. Unless there's a critical mass of small and medium size pooches, I've learned to stay clear. read more

I don't know if I will be returning to this park. I took my dogs to this park on Friday (1/16/14) and both seemed to have a good time. But something about the crowd at the particular time did not sit well with me. I can only speak about the people who were there at this time. I know not everyone is like this. I feel like most of people there at this time were not keeping watch of their dogs. There were people off in the corners smoking, backs turned, and heads buried in books. But there were a few people who were very vigilant. The inattention of most of the people there wasn't such an issue until there was an accident. A young girl was run into by two dogs. I was horrified as I watched her get launched into the air. She fell on the ground screaming in pain. One of the dogs was hers and the other belonged to a man who did not seemed too concerned. As anyone should do, her mother quickly picked her up to her feet and then put her dog back on the leash. But the dog that was chasing him was excited and wanted to play some more (can't blame him though, that's what dogs do). But the dog's owner was not helping! It took the mother yelling at him to subdue his dog. This angered me. In all the dog parks I have been to, owners are always quick to intervene. This man seemed more offended by the fact that she called him out rather than being concerned about the girl's well-being. Even as they were leaving he had the nerve to approach her. I couldn't hear all of the conversation but it sounded more like he was offended by her calling him out . To add to my disappointment, no one else seemed concerned by what happened and no one rushed to see if the young girl was ok or asked! This is not okay!!!! I can't speak for everyone that goes here. I hope this was a rare instance. I did meet some lovely people . But this experience really hit me. If the mother is reading this, I hope your lovely daughter is ok! read more

This review is about large fenced summer dog park, not muddy winter dog park at Gabrial Park. It is huge with nice grassy expanse. But I cannot understand why a part of it cannot be fenced for smaller dogs, as the park is often frequented by aggressive dogs and owners that keep their eyes on their phones, and not on pooping and/or aggressive dog interactions. Unlike most dog parks, there are no safe entry double-gated areas, and the upper gate no longer securely closes and has a gap under it that even my 25 pound dog can go under. After today's dismal visit, I will no longer visit. Such a waste of a beautiful, potentially wonderful dog park. read more
