My most recent visit was a terrible experience. I bought several different pastries and brought them home. The first two I tried had a strange ammonia-type smell to them on the inside. After the first one was like that I thought maybe the second would be different, but it wasn't. At that point I drove back to the bakery with the pastries. I had only touched the two and brought back the others whole. The person at the counter seemed to immediately recognize the issue as the pastries being underbaked. Despite this, however, they would only offer refunds for the two that we had actually tasted. I had no reason to believe that the other pastries were worth eating which is why I brought them back. Refusing a full refund in this situation is bad customer service. I will not be returning to this bakery. Update: In response to the owner's response: I can assure you that both my partner and I smelled ammonia in both items. Based on that, we did not want the rest of the items we had purchased. A simple full refund would have been the right thing to do, and we would have returned several more times over the week had that been the case. Instead, you are still being arrogant by telling us that you'll still sell out everyday. Mistakes happen with baking, but your approach to customer service is appalling. My family lives in Brookings and we've already started talking to others. Word spreads quickly in a small town. You would do well to treat customers with respect. read more

Rolled in here to pick up some baked goods for work. I wasn't expecting anything out of the ordinary (in my opinion donuts are donuts). Man was I wrong! Everything I have had from here has been the best I have ever had. Went back again today, 2nd time in two days, and tried a variety of items. So far the apple fritter and anything with their custard is my favorite. You can tell the owner really cares about his product and customers and will take the time to talk with you about any of his items. Happy to have this place in Brookings, and I look forward to ending our family walks or bike rides here for many years to come. read more

An adequate replacement for Bakery by the Sea, in the same location. I saw the sign last week but noticed that they wouldn't be open until Saturday (it's open S/S/M), so we stopped in on Sunday, about 9:15 AM. I'm glad to see a new bakery realize that it should be open on weekends, if it wants to have the income that the tourists can provide. I would expect that Honey Bee will eventually open on Fridays, too, to catch the Friday coffee-break-party businesses. I hope that, as the business grows, Honey Bee will graduate from a doughnut shop into a full-blown bakery, which Brookings has not seen since Delaney's closed. To sample as much as two people could, we ordered a plain cake doughnut, a glazed cinnamon twist, an apple fritter, and cinnamon roll. The glazed twist was superb! The cake doughnut was excellent. The fritter had good flavor but needed a few more pieces of apple. We'd rate the fritter as barely satisfactory and would try it again, hoping for an improvement. The cinnamon roll was mediocre because it was closed, so it could be covered in a sealed glaze, instead of being an obvious roll moderately coated with glazing. Because it was closed, I presume that the filling could not have as much butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon between the layers as an excellent cinnamon roll requires. We wouldn't order this again unless we desperately needed a cinnamon roll fix. read more

Been in Brookings for over a year and finally tried Honeybee out. They definitely live up to the hype. A little more expensive than the run of the mill doughnut shop but the product quality makes up for it. I highly recommend giving them a try and look forward to my next visit. read more
