We ordered take-out for Christmas dinner. Having Chinese food on Christmas has been a family tradition for many years. Our daughter lives near Hong Huah and at her suggestion, we ordered pick up. Our order included Kung Pao Chicken, Mu Shu Pork, Hunan Shrimp, Beef Chow Fun, and Hot and Sour Soup. The wait time for delivery was over two hours, which is mainly why we picked up the food. When we opened it once we were at home, one item was missing - the Chow Fun. We called and they didn't ring that up. No matter, there was still more than enough food to go around, but it did cost them 1/2 star. I understand how busy they must have been, and mistakes do happen. The Hot and Sour Soup was more than enough for two. It was a little more on the sour side than I've had at other places, but I have to admit, it was very good. Also, it was loaded with vegetables and pork. They were generous. The meal was very good. The Kung Pao Chicken was good, not too much on the spicy side, but it had some back heat. The Hunan Shrimp was also good. Personally, Hunan means hot to me. This was "in a hot red sauce" but I found it sweet. Even though, it went nicely together. Lastly, The Mu Shu Pork was outstanding. Generally, my complaint about Mu Shu is the pancakes. These were very large and didn't fall apart as many do. The taste was excellent as was the amount of pork. I am going to preface this review with saying I do NOT like giving bad reviews, because I don't want to hurt a small business. We really wanted to like Hong Huah. We drove out of our way to pick it up due to the reviews. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the hype, at least not on a Friday night. I arrived & wasn't greeted by anyone, because all the staff were in the kitchen. From what I could see, they seemed overwhelmed with all the orders. When the staff did see me, they acknowledged me from the kitchen entry & smiled. We ordered crab rangoon, sesame chicken, orange chicken, jalapeño chicken, combo fried rice, & lo mein. My youngest kids ate the lo mein, but the rest of us did not enjoy any of it. The food lacked flavor, & honestly, it seemed a little old. read more

The eggrolls were nothing special and egg drop soup was lighter than most others I've had (less chicken broth) but acceptable. The entrees were quite disappointing and had no spice to them: Orange Chicken wasn't crispy nor spicy at all; Garlic Eggplant was reasonable; Salt & Pepper Shrimp was terribly overcooked and soggy. I've been eating here for a while now, and the menu items I like, I love. There's been some items that I haven't been fond of, but overall I've had a variety of dishes and most of them are fantastic. I love the egg rolls, the pot stickers, the fried rice, the Mongolian beef, the kung pao, the empress chicken, the twice cooked pork, the lo mein. It's all great with minor complaints about anything at best, such as some dishes having too much of the cheapest ingredient. I've not been fond of the mapo tofu, who's tofu wasn't firm enough and wasn't spicy at all, the chow fun who's noodles were too gelatin-esque, or the fried wontons, which has basically no meat in them and are too big leaving a mostly flavorless crisp wonton. But I don't hold that against the restaurant, not every dish can be a winner and it's entirely possible that these dishes are fine and it's my personal subjective tastes that didn't agree with them, considering how much I love the food here. read more

We have been coming here for years, and we love this place. Hong Huah has by far the best potstickers anywhere--and we deliberately try them at other places to compare. The Mongolian Beef is a favorite, as is the Mu Shu, whether pork, chicken, or vegetarian. The staff members are usually in the kitchen, cooking--they get a lot of take-out orders--and so you won't always be welcomed at the door quickiy. Don't let the very plain surroundings fool you; the food is good and fresh. AFter trying a variety of places over the years, this family-owned spot is still our favorite. read more

This is my ultimate favorite Chinese restaurant of all time. My family and I have been coming for years on years and I have yet to find better tasting Chinese food to date! The owner is super friendly and pretty much knows everyone since he's been in business for what seems like forever. He really cares about his business and his customers! Everything you order is absolutely delicious. I have yet to have a bad dish from here. You can't go wrong with their egg rolls, potstickers, beef satay(sticks). Their egg rolls are phenomenal! Best egg rolls in town in my opinion. Their sweet and sour sauce tastes so fresh and the ingredients in the egg roll and the outside crunch is something other worldly! Potstickers tastes better when you eat them there compared to to go. Either way it's still delicious, exactly as pictured. Big round and fluffy dough with a perfectly sizzled under side. Mouthwatering! If you are a Mongolian beef fan this is the place to order! Best Mongolian I've had to date. Sweet and sour chicken, ginger chicken, Kung pao chicken, beef chow fun, chicken lo mein, garlic shrimp, garlic chicken=all top choices. Oh! And they have this sauce that's pretty much a chili paste---very tasty and spicy! I mix it with everything and it's such a good combo and the perfect amount of kick. The decor of the restaurant has the remnants of a 1970s something banquet hall with its floor to ceiling mirror walls, worn down carpeting, awkwardly placed chandelier, and tiny high stool bar tucked way in the back of the restaurant by the kitchen and bathrooms... but who comes to Hong Huah for the decor? Some of the reviews here gripe about the slow service of the place, but when the food is this good... you have to kick back and take the time to truly appreciate the delicious Chinese food this place has to offer. Things you must try here... 1. The pork wok fried potstickers (dumplings). Why are these 8 pieces of deliciousness worth trying? The dough has what the Taiwanese would describe as the perfect " Q Q" texture. Meaning that shell of the dumpling has a chewiness texture that is firm and has a bit of a bounce as you chew. The bottom of the dumpling has the perfect sear, which provides a delicate crunch factor, hence why it is called a pot - sticker... these are literally just the description of the outside. The inside of the dumpling is stuffed with a giant succulent pork meatball that is just mouthwatering delicious. The potstickers are served with a vinegar soysauce and hot chili on the side. Both are a great accompaniment to the appetizer. Note that these are fried, and as expected will be greasy, but they're not saturated in oil. 2. Satay beef ( on a stick). 4 pieces of beef, skewered into a stick. It's marinated in a Taiwanese BBQ sauce that is called satay sauce (沙爹醬). I can't describe it, but you just have to take my word for it and try it. They're delicious. 3. Although I don't have a picture of it cause it was inhaled before it even hit the table... there is a sliced sausage dish you absolutely have to try. It comes with slice raw garlic and it's just that good. It's one of those appetizers you need with a beer, specifically a Taiwan beer (台灣啤酒). 4. Beef chow fun with pan fried flat rice noodles , bean sprouts, and green onions. It's a delicious noodle and beefy dish. A bit on the greasy side, but keep in mind it is fried noodles. 5. Hong Huah lobster, which is literally one whole lobster seasoned with the restaurant's secret spices and coated in drawn butter over a bed of steam broccoli. I can't quite describe the spices, however it is delicious. The lobster itself was cooked to perfection. The spices was a great accompaniment. I would have prefer to have control of how much butter I consume though I will have to make a mental note to ask of it can be place on the side the next time. 6. Fish filet with a veggie melody. Little chunks of white fish coated in what tasted like a tempura batter, light salty sauce, and the veggies consist of pea pods, water chestnuts, carrots, and bamboo shoots. Overall, the restaurant provides delicious and large portions of foods at a very reasonable price. The decor is dated. The service is slow, but the staff is friendly. This is a small family own restaurant for over 25+ years. This place is a small hidden gem in the neighborhood and dare I say, better than some of the places in Chinatown? It's a great place to bring small children out to dinner. Do keep in mind that there isn't a changing table in the bathrooms though. read more

Some Chinese restaurants their dishes can all taste similar, not here. Everything was distinctively flavorful. They were generous with the sauces, and the staff was friendly and even offered to help me carry the bags out. We fed 6 adults and 2 small children with this, great value for the money. Since the pandemic it seems like a lot of restaurants don't have good quality for fresh food, but that couldn't be further from the gage here! Definitely will return! read more

One of the best Chinese food places in all of Chicago. Hong Huah is a family owned restaurant where Mr. Lo and his family work together to keep the place running. When you enter the restaurant, you are immediately greeted by Mr. Lo and he welcomes you into his restaurant, into his world of delicious cuisine that is mainly Chinese, but has influences from Taiwan as well. The best way to enjoy Hong Huah is to eat at the restaurant. They have dishes with extra flare that makes the experience quite special. A couple of my favorite dishes are the Fried Potstickers and Crab Rangoon. The Potstickers are so delicious and fried on the bottom to perfection and paired with a housemade dipping sauce. In addition, the Crab Rangoon comes with 6 pieces and a housemade sweet and sour sauce. I personally like to enjoy the Crab Rangoons by breaking apart each corner and dipping it sauce. Amazing. For entrees, their General Tso's chicken is very popular along with their Lobster and Moo Shu dishes. When you order the Moo Shu's, Mr. Lo comes around and transforms them into a burrito. I ordered pork fried rice and it had vegetables in it and plenty of meat. It was good. I also ordered two eggrolls and they were decent as well. Nothing outstanding, but good. They're a little skimpy on the condiments and I did not get a hot mustard with the eggrolls, but I will order from this restaurant again because they don't have a minimum order amount that you have to order in order to have it delivered. If you want just a taste of something and you don't want to order three or four different dishes just to make a minimum order of $20-$25, this is the place. read more

Been going to Hong Huah for some Time since the 1990's as a teenager. Chinese food here is delicious. Love their Mixed Vegetables, Lo Mein Soft Noodle dishes as well as Their fried rices and Peking Duck. The owner John has been there and has been pretty good in keeping up with the dishes. Restaurant has that 80's ambiance but that is compromise with the Delicious Chinese food there. read more

The Pot Stickers are both steamed and fried and are firm inside, not like other places which serve soft, mushy insides. I'll take some hot sass on the side. (Sales tactic? Maybe) I appreciate that they put the "sweet and sour" sass on the side, so the shrimp didn't get soggy. Overall it was pretty decent. Desperately seeking a new calendar, I called around looking for the Chinese restaurant that had what I was looking for. What luck, in business with Hong Huah, free calendar, no minimum order. The hours are great, open til 10, 11 on the weekends, and they deliver. I ordered some egg rolls, shrimp toast, and crab rangoons, and they were greasy deliciousness and didn't break the bank. The service was very friendly, although the decor was a little dated, a little reminiscent of my great aunt's living room if she had been Asian.
