The portions were noticeably smaller, with very little meat and mostly vegetable fillers. I don't mind vegetables at all, but at the prices being charged, the value just wasn't there. Food was so bland they must be cooking for people who have never had authentic Chinese food.

After many years in the Bozeman area I finally tried Hong Kong City. I was pleasantly surprised. The service is very good and friendly, the food is solid American Chinese. I had one normal American Chinese dish (kung pao chicken) and one traditional dish (shredded spicy potato). The Kung Pao was fine... nothing special but it was what I was craving. The shredded potato dish, though, was excellent. It's a bit crunchy, a bit sour and more than a bit spicy. It produces that amazing Sichuan numbing that you rarely find in this area. It was too much for me to eat so I fried the leftovers this morning with an egg and it may be my new favorite. In the future, I'll probably try the traditional menu again. There's nothing wrong with the American menu items, but I grew up on traditional Chinese food and now I've found a local source. read more

After searching around on Yelp for quality, authentic Chinese food in the Bozeman/north Yellowstone area, this looked to be the best bet. I think it's important to take into consideration that Montana only has a total population of just over 1 million, and that Asians only consist of a fraction of a percent of that. My expectations were not very high. However, I still want to evaluate this place objectively. We ordered 4 dishes: crystal shrimp (shrimp with assorted vegetables in a clear gravy), Chinese hot pot (shrimp, scallop, chicken, barbecue pork, beef, and vegetables in brown gravy), pineapple fried rice (with chicken), and Hong Kong pan fried noodles (with chicken, shrimp, and barbecue pork). My favorite here was probably the crystal shrimp. The shrimp tasted fresh, vegetables were crisp, and gravy was not too heavy or salty. The other dishes all contained chicken, beef, and/or barbecue pork. The chicken and beef had meat tenderizing powder added to it (which breaks down the enzymes and gives the meat an unnatural mushy texture), and the barbecue pork tasted old. The pan fried noodles and hot pot both had gravy that tasted good. Overall, those dishes were okay. The pineapple fried rice was by far the weakest dish. It was bland. The menu said it had curry in it, but we didn't detect any at all - it seemed like they just added yellow food coloring. The rice also didn't have any wok charred flavor (see here for more info on "wok hei": http://hakkasan.com/blog/wok-hei-breath-wok/). Portion sizes were on the smaller side (the hot pot was a lot shallower than any I've ever seen, for example), but it was enough for us. Prices aren't terrible, either. Our waiter was really nice and attentive, refilling our water often. Overall, I'd say this is a solid place to get food. We all thought our meal was decent - we finished it all. read more

We're always leery to order the "wrong thing in the wrong place" - like trying to find fresh salmon in Iowa or fresh ling cod fish and chips in some midwest town. Same with Chinese in Montana! We've had some pretty bad Chinese outside of the big China-towns of Seattle and San Francisco.... But Hong Kong City was a very pleasant surprise. While not remotely "authentic" it was very very tasty "American Chinese". Actually, some of the best we've had - including big Chinese places in the Puget Sound. We had the Szechuan Beef and "Crispy Chicken". Both were very tasty - especially the chicken. However, I would warn that it's not really "Crispy" - it might be that way out of the wok, but they then smother it in sweet/sour sauce, which is really more what this is. But very tasty - we both liked it a lot, as well as the beef. The only thing that was odd was the soup we had. Anne had the wonton, I had the hot/sour. NEITHER tasted very good - really weird actually (we have both types of soup all the time). Neither of us finished them. But it was a minor thing, given how good the main dishes were. Hong Kong City is the f$&@ing $hit! The service was instantaneous and the staff was friendly and hospitable. But of course, the most important aspect was the quality of the FOOD! Never have I or my family visiting from the East Coast had Chinese food this good!!! The mango/pineapple chicken (combine the spicy mango or non-spicy pineapple chicken, you have to ask but they can do ANYTHING!!!) was fantastic.
