But as each dish came out, we saw that they LOVE to use cilantro here. Just something to be aware of. If you hate cilantro maybe you should ask them to leave it out of whatever you order. Highlights from this set menu for me were the Sichuanese Beef Salad and the Lazi-Ji Chicken Wings. The chicken wings had a nice spicy kick! Everything on the menu was decent, although the curries were a bit underwhelming and watery. The Coconut and Pandan 'Tres Leches' Cake was good too, although I didn't taste the pandan flavor at all. I enjoyed the lamb skewers, but I know not everyone likes lamb, so it's interesting that they have it on the mid and upper tier set menus. I feel like they should probably provide an alternative option for those who find lamb too gamy. Overall, a great option if you're looking for Asian food in the area!

A large bus with Chinese tourists had recently arrived and they occupied almost every table. After several minutes we got a table and perused the extensive menu. They offer many familiar dishes that appear on the menus of Chinese restaurants across the nation. But they also had some specialty creations that are probably have a more narrow appeal, plus some items that use local ingredients such as elk, bison, and trout. We opted for just a few items for our meal, because we didn't want to walk away with leftovers that we probably wouldn't eat. Combination fried rice - very standard, with a decent amount of chicken and pork and a few fat shrimp. Not too salty and not doused with an excessive amount of soy sauce Fried tofu with Chinese vegetable - this was a little disappointing to me. The tofu was good, but the sauce had too much soy sauce, ginger, and cornstarch. The vegetables also weren't Chinese - no bok choy, gai lan, napa, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts. Instead, it was made with zucchini, regular cabbage, American broccoli, white mushrooms, and carrots. Shanghai style rice cake - now this was very well done. Rice cake can be tricky to make, and if not done properly they can become sticky and unpleasantly soft. They really got this right. The rice cake had a the right texture, and overall flavor (it's made with small pieces of pork) was excellent. Prices were pretty decent, about on par with similar restaurants in the SF Bay area. Our servers were friendly but overworked, but our food came out quickly after ordering. Just one caveat: when we received the bill they had already added a 15% tip, but the receipt provided an option to add another tip. We opted not to double-tip.

The variety of food they had was incredible. From pig feet to mapo tofu, all the dishes we got were of decent quality; dare I say it's comparable to Bay Area Chinese restaurants. Especially for the amount we paid, the portions were VERY generous. I personally liked the mapo tofu the best, but all the other dishes really came to my liking. Excellent value for the area! I am shocked by the low reviews on this restaurant, but I assume it came down to bad customer service and the low "aesthetic" of Chinatown Restaurant. I personally didn't experience anything like that. The workers did everything they could to welcome us and prepare such a large amount of food for us. All I can say is don't judge a book by its cover; please take the reviews with a grain of salt and try out Chinatown Restaurant for yourself!
