So I stopped going to Carryouts for a minute due a bad experience but recently I was craving for some. A few people recommended HONG KONG on MLK Ave in SE so I figure why not try them. Parking was ok and the establishment was clean and wasn't empty at all which is a good sign, Food - I ordered Spicy Shrimp & Broccoli, Shrimp Eggroll & and Half & Half. I was definitely disappointed in the shrimp & broccoli, the sauce was way too thick and it wasn't the taste I was expecting. It wasn't horrible but it also wasn't the best. The eggroll was ok but definitely could've been better. The half & half drink was way too sweet and more tea than lemonade. I ended up giving my food away since it just wasn't I imagined it to be. Price - You must bring cash since they do NOT accept any other form of payment. For convenience, they do have a ATM inside so if you need to take out cash, you can. I like this in case you didn't know or forgot so there's no need to leave and come back. One thing I can say, they have decent pricing unlike a lot of other spots that doubled their prices including their lunch specials. Customer Service - Decent customer service and wait time. It's easy placing phone orders and highly suggested so you eliminate wait time once you arrive to pickup your food. Overall, this is nowhere a top Chinese take out place I would highly recommend if you in DC but also a place you should try for yourself since we all have different taste buds. Their Mumbo sauce (what i went there for) was sweet, thick, RED, with a spicy kick to it (pictured $10 total). Their Mumbo had a "standard" Mumbo taste to it. . . Howard China's wings were STAMP!! Crispy, not super sized...what wings are supposed to be (from carryouts). Their fries, and half n half were delicious too. Their half n half wasn't as sweet, but you could taste the powdered ice tea mix residue, via it settling at the bottom of the pre-made ice tea cup. Their Mumbo sauce was sweet, with a hint of sour. It was definitely delicious!! . . . Hong Kong won this versus!! Their Mumbo sauce is what I know Mumbo sauce to be as a Native Washingtonian. It was just YEAH... Now Howard China's Mumbo was DEFINITELY Like That too!! But Kong's had that extra umpf to it. . . . On another note both places establishments we're not clean. First time visiting. They have egg rolls listed on the menu. I ordered 2. I bit into one and I felt some sort of meat texture. I begin to panic, believing it was shrimp (which i'm allergic to) and immediately spit it out while driving. I was correct. I contact the restaurant and he states "i don't sell regular egg rolls...just shrimp.". I suggested he consider adding "shrimp" to the sign next to the egg roll because I'm allergic and I could have died and there's no indication that they contain shellfish. He proceeds to tell me that he only puts a little amount of shrimp in the egg rolls and he has been in business for 30 years and no one has ever had an issue until today. I told him that that's fine, but it doesn't take much to simply write shrimp on the menu to warn people. He ignored me and answered the phone instead. Horrible customer service! I had ordered from here a time or two before but, I always had my daughter to order and pick up for me. Well, my daughter has long moved out and is adulting on her own now. So I decided to brave this place for myself..... remember I'm craving egg rolls. I called this place and the lady was so rude and loud and in a rush I had to just hang up I thought perhaps she doesn't understood English very well. So I went over there in person. Walked in and saw a woman and a male talking and I asked them both, who answers the phone. The man walks off and I get no response just a shout out, "what did you order." I said, again, are you the lady who takes phone orders?! She finally shook her head yes and looks off. I informed her of how loud and rude she was on the phone and told her that now I see that you understand English perfectly but you are simply accustomed to talking rudely to your patrons. She said again, what is your order and I kindly replied, "ma'am NOT a thing from you. Have a wonderful day." I then walked out after a long gaze of sheer disapproval and disappointment! My first time having a take-out Chinese food yesterday (9/26/2024 after 3:00PM) from this establishment and was very disappointed. The specific dishes we ordered: Hunan Chicken (Lg spicy/hot), Lo Mein combination noodles (Lg spicy/hot), and Hot & Sour Soup (Lg spicy/hot), were all so bland, none of these dishes were spicy/hot, the soup was not at all "sour & hot/spicy (thought to add hot sauce to this, but the sour wasn't there)" and vegetables were over-cooked, and the soy sauce packets were bland, the dried noodles that go with the Hot & Sour Soup were stale. This was the most unpleasant Chinese food I ever had eaten and barely ate, and discarded the remainder. The Hot & Sour soup was barely touched and the person I go this for, did not want it. Personally, when I first walked in this place, they have huge signs promoting American cuisine foods, which I think most people from this neighborhood know what I mean by "American cuisine," which is probably ordered a lot. They have a paper menu taped to the wall near the ATM, and on it are "X's" throughout the menu's prices, seeming like they do not offer these foods. I asked them, "do you offer any of these Chinese foods?" and they said, "yes." That was strange and confusing with the "x's" on the paper menu dishes costs. My first gut instinct was this place really does more American cuisine than Chinese foods because of the huge signs you see displayed showing American cuisine foods, and probably more like fried chicken, ribs, shrimp fried rice, maybe sandwiches, just to name a few items that are ordered mostly as an American cuisine. For myself, I wanted authentic Chinese food that tasted like Chinese food, and after this one-time experience, I decided I would not go back to this place for Chinese food. I was truly very disappointed considering we spent over $45.00 on these three Chinese dishes and none of them were satisfactory. So, back to driving a distance for authentic Chinese food dishes that I know offer the flavor that goes with that specific dish, fresh vegetables not over-cooked, and enjoying authentic Chinese food knowing I will get my money's worth. The Ballou High School marching band had long trumpeted its final notes for the day, and the crowd that had gathered for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade had long disbursed and gone off in a myriad of directions. However, as nightfall neared, I found myself ironically on Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave. in Southeast (walking northbound and getting a bit hungry). Indeed, luckily for me, one does not have to venture too far or too long on any commercial strip in the "hood" before stumbling upon a Chinese carryout. I'd seen Hong Kong Delite's storefront before, but I had never actually gone inside to order anything until now. I chose the six piece chicken wing deal with mumbo sauce, which is a great deal at $6.25. The chicken wings were fried "hard" (an "inner city" specialty) in what must have been boiling hot oil (dark oil that must also have cooked its fair share of wings, egg rolls, and fish and that had coalesced into a potent brew). The immaculately fried wings, with its crispy exterior, locked in the moisture of the chicken itself, which resulted in a truly mouth watering experience. I'm fairly confident that Hong Kong Delite does not have a secret herb and spice recipe a la Colonel Sanders (at least, I didn't taste anything to suggest that it does); but, their wings easily rival (or, even surpass) what national chains like KFC or Popeye's can dish out. The mumbo sauce (which, by the way, is one of the most notable culinary items to originate from DC) was not as impressive. It was neon red (with no hint of orange), a bit too thick, and lacked the tantalizing balance of sweet and tangy that the best mumbo sauces around inner city DC usually have. As I sat there, nearby, and continued with my impromptu meal, my mind began to wander away from the wings and mumbo sauce; and, I suddenly began to reflect on the fact that I was actually on Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave. on this day (of all days), a day when we are to celebrate and remember Dr. King for his great achievements. I began to think about his life and legacy (as I have done many times before). Like many, I invariably started with the sanitized version of Dr. King's message (that somewhat generic call for mutual respect and tolerance) and progressed toward his more controversial aspirations for an end to war and an establishment of economic justice in the U.S. Then, I just thought about the man himself, about the fact that he lived such a purposeful life, and that, despite his many trials and tribulations, he remained committed to his calling. Yet, just as suddenly, as the skies turned grayer, as the clouds thickened, and as I realized that the forecast called for sleet and snow, I got up, threw away the chicken bones, and left. As I walked, my steps were no different; but, a part of me had been affected by my brief mental ramblings. Years ago I had a friend introduce me to the wings & mambo sauce from the little place. I didn't know what the bid deal was. Shoot, you can get wings from any Chinese food carryout. However, I notice how my co-workers couldn't stop eating the sauce. They would pour it over fries, rice, wings, egg rolls. One even would like the little cup clean. since then the wings are not of questionable size. You can id them mugs and know that it's a chicken wing. Personally I thought it was a turkey wing and refuse to insult any culture...esp when people cook your food. Most of the time it's hotter-than-a-muva so most people go out front. When you order the lady behind the glass will repeat your order back and tell you what bills you gave her and your money back. Pay attention to what she repeats back so you don't get all stupid and mess her day up. The Sauces!!: Forget asking what's in it cause they're not telling!! Be specific about if you want the darn sauce on your wings only, fries only or your rice ....or sauce on the side in a cup. I recommend getting dat-their-sauce on every thing! just understand that you will come back tomorrow. FYI: Don't ask if they have yellow rice instead of steamed or fried rice! If you don't have enough money to cover your order that's your problem. I wouldn't recommend sitting. It truly brought back memories of my younger years. I did hear that the Tik Tok said the lady at the counter had poor customer service. Well... I didn't experience it. Also, note, this place is CASH ONLY (which I didn't know, and luckily my coworker had cash on him!). My work just moved to the SE, and I've been trying to get people to try some restaurants here in the neighborhood... so we decided to get takeout from this place for our last luncheon. Needless to say, I ordered a HUGE variety of food to accommodate all the people who like different things in my office... First, I will say that the two ladies working there were EXTREMELY friendly. I placed my order the day before and they accommodated my need to pick up at 11:15 instead of 11:30 AM which was awesome! They also called me to confirm the next day, which was reassuring. Not only that, but they included tons of FREE egg rolls with my meal that I didn't order, and people really wanted. The pricing was also reasonable AND they gave us a discount (maybe for our big order?) on the final bill. Unfortunately, the food fell short of what I was hoping for. The beef was mushy in all the beef dishes (beef broccoli, beef and vegetables, and hunan beef), and I wasn't a big fan of how the hunan chicken sauce tasted. The chicken (chicken and veggies, hunan chicken, and szechwan chicken) dishes were better, but weren't anything special or unique. The lo mein and pork fried rice were good, but standard fare. A lot of people said that the egg rolls - although free - were a bit mushy which was a let down. There were a few more negatives though -- specifically they took a little while to get all our food together after we got there (understandable I guess because it was a big order... but still, it made us late getting back by 15 mins), they didn't mention that it was CASH ONLY when I ordered (and with such a large order, I feel it should have been mentioned), and finally, the lunch specials were charged at $6.50/meal rather than the menu price of $5.50 (was this because I asked for white rice instead of fried rice?).
