we normally order from springfield location and there are never issues. we ordered the same food we normally do. the drunken noodles were meh. the beef and broccoli was very bad. the beef had a weird texture and film on top. the broccoli was not fresh and tasted like frozen broccoli. we were especially disappointment with the kung pao chicken. it is a weird color, not saucey, and lacked a lot of flavor. generals chicken was also not good. not sure why this location lacks so heavily compared to springfield but it is a shame. give springfield location a try! read more

I walked in on a Friday night and placed on order. My order was ready in what felt like less than 10 fast minutes -- huh? so fast! So, did they master the flavoring of the dishes? Nope. I like the speed and accuracy of order completion, but the food did not taste that great. General Tso's Chicken had too much batter with very lttle chicken meat on some pieces. And, It was not crispy -- probably soggy because it was sealed in a plastic to-go container. And, the chicken lo mein was bland. Chicken corn soup was tasty with lots of chicken and egg ingredients. I've been coming to this location on and off for the past 10 years. I used to think the food here was good but not great, let me tell you I was wrong! I moved states for a few years and learned that this spot is most definitely one of the best Chinese food spots ever! I would travel back to Burke to visit family over the last few years and this would always be my first stop. This has become our local go-to place for carry out Chinese in the Burke area. You can sit down to eat but it's mostly set up for carry out. Still, it's perfectly fine for sit down. The food here is above average for American style Chinese takeout. Portions are generous. I like the kung pow chicken. My husband likes the twice cooked pork, which is made with roast pork. Fried rice is good. We also like the hot and sour soup. My husband loves their fried egg roll, but I personally find it average. The dumplings are handmade, steamed or pan fried...thick dough and filling- mostly average. Service is always very friendly, as this is a family run business. Double check your order for accuracy-this can be a concern. It's a solid enough place, I'd give it 3-4 stars. It's the best option in the Burke area, imo. read more

Probably the best Chinese food in Burke! The sauces are flavorful and the meat is always tender. I love the Mongolian Beef and the chicken skewers are delicious. We got a pickup order of: General Tsos chicken w/ white meat Lo mein Egg rolls. Total cost: $33. What a rip off... I've been here three times and that was three times too many. Never again. The price keeps going up but not the quality, nor the attitude of the people. This was NOT worth $33.. All they do is just walk over to Walmart to get everything... smh You will find better at China Town about 1 mile away, or Chopstix Express. Some of the nicest people ever. I really like the folks whom own and operate this restaurant. During the pandemic, they came through big time with large take out orders. Also just kind, polite, and helpful as well. That does make a difference. Their prices have gone up. Then again everyone's has. We are living through staggering inflation. The chicken with broccoli or Szechuan chicken are my favorites. If you want a real egg roll, here is the place to go. It's a basic sit down restaurant. Their picture of Hong Kong is beautiful. Drinks are mostly of the non alcoholic if I remember correctly, but coffee is still working. Parking can be frustrating due to the Walmart crowds, but I'm happy to recommend this restaurant. We love Hong Kong Express. It is a no-frills Chinese restaurant located in the Walmart (Burke) Shopping Center. The food is well-prepared, reasonably priced, and delicious. We usually get three large containers of the Hot & Sour soup as it is full of tofu, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and egg ribbons and, just as importantly, has the right amount of spice and tang to it. I also recommend the Beef & Broccoli, Spicy Tangy Delight, and Szechuan String Beans. They do these dishes very well. Finally, I enjoy the family and others who work there. I ordered the C. 16 General tso's dinner, meat dumplings, drunken noodles, and hot and sour soup for my boyfriend and I. When picking up, I felt so much attitude from the ladies that were running my payment and they didn't greet me, nor speak to me at all. I still left a tip though, just because I feel like it's right. When I got home, I noticed that they got my General tso's order wrong and gave me moo goo gai pan. I've never tried this before and was disappointed, but I'm always down to try new food. IT WAS AWFUL. No flavor, nasty wet chicken, and made me nauseous. I couldn't touch it. My boyfriend was kind enough to offer me some of his drunken noodles and dumplings. Once again..flavorless, soggy meat, and the most greasy thing I've ever eaten. I moved on to the dumplings because it's hard to mess up dumplings right?? Nope! This place somehow managed to even do that. No flavor in the meat whatsoever, I felt like I was biting into just nasty mush. Finally, I figured that the hot and sour soup could finally be the one good thing in this meal because I always get it and it's great! I WAS MISTAKEN. Even the hot and sour soup was terrible and tasteless. I felt so sick to my stomach after this. After some thought, my boyfriend and I packed up the food and headed back to the restaurant to get a refund because I spent $45 for trash! One lady was trying to be accommodating, however there was an older lady yelling in another language and just tossing the food around. The lady told us that next time we need to ask for more flavor, but I've been coming here for years and NEVER asked that and the food was always decent. They only refunded me for the moo goo gai pan because "that was there mistake." They didn't refund for anything else because it was half eaten. My hot and sour soup was still to the brim of the cup and they didn't refund me for that. They should have at least refunded us half the amount of the other items, if not 100% for the whole meal! I work in the service industry and I know exactly how restaurants should treat their customers and this is not right. This experience extremely frustrating, I feel like I've gotten stolen from and treated poorly. Paid $33 dollars for nothing but disappointment and an upset stomach. I will NEVER go back here and I advise everyone to steer clear. Hunan cafe down the road is so much tastier and fresh and when they messed up my mom's order, they were so apologetic and refunded her in full even when she didn't ask for that. read more

I came in here recently for a late lunch/early dinner. I got beef hofun and a pineapple Fanta. The total came to $19.50. All of the ingredients were fresh and tasty. Beef ho fun has beef, celery, bean sprouts, onions, and chives. The service was friendly and the facilities were clean and well maintained. I came on into this Chinese restaurant because I had a huge craving for real authentic Chinese food. When I walked in, I was confronted with a setup similar to that if the early days of the pandemic. They had these tables placed about ten feet in front of the register area, so that their customers could not approach it come close to the cash register where one would b accustomed to placing an order. Nevertheless, there was a line in front of the table for people waiting to place their order. I decided upon a healthy filling choice- beef and broccoli. We have had a number of Chinese restaurants come and go from our neighborhood. This one has really passed the test of time. You can call in an order for pickup and it will be ready when you get there. If you are in the mood to dine in, there are a handful of tables with service. They have great lunch specials that come with fried rice and an eggroll or soup. All of the soups here are good. We generally order the orange chicken and pay one extra dollar to upgrade from white rice to fried rice. The serving is plenty to split between two people. Don't over order because as with most Asian foods, they are not great the next day. Over the years, I have ordered pretty much every thing on the menu but my go to favorites are mooshu pork, curry chicken, happy family, and orange chicken. They also serve bubble tea which is good but not great. They are often out of a lot of flavors and the boba isn't always cooked enough to make it soft. Since there are so many other places in this area that make it better, I usually get mine somewhere else. (Hint: Cafe L'Ami in Burke HMart has the best bubble tea!) One thing that I found surprising on their menu was chicken wings. I was curious one day and ordered them. There were six huge wings (both sections) and it came with fried rice (or you can get fries). The wings are amazing!!! They come with a mumbo sauce that is really good. It is hard to find local places that have mumbo sauce! The workers really make an effort to get to know their customers which is nice when we live in such an impersonal area. The restaurant is consistently clean, friendly, and accurate with orders. So, while this restaurant is not fancy by any means, it is dependable and staple in the neighborhood! read more

I guess they had a change in ownership.. the menu has changed, prices have gone up a bit, and the food quality is not as good as before! Today I got a coconut bubble tea which was pretty good and a Singapore fried rice.. it was not tasty, very plain, it even didn't have enough curry color! I stopped by because I was in the area and an hour early for a doc appt across the street where this place was in a small strip mall and a small Walmart. So, I ordered beef broccoli, my test item for chinese food. Well, it was bland and the beef was coated with cornstarch, I believe, tender enough as they were sliced thinly. The only ingredient I really liked was the broccoli because they were al dente just like I prefer it. I appreciate the fact that I had a bite to eat but will probably not be coming back. A 2 for me because at least I had a place to grab a quick bite when I desperately needed sustenance. Hey, I had no breakfast and it was almost lunch time. Not unfriendly because they accommodated me even though they just opened and they need about 20 minutes to crank up the fire to heat the wok that had then cooked my order. If nothing else I was grateful for that. I wanted to give a higher rating thinking I found a gem in an area I've not been to but I suppose for the residents near this place, this is probably a place they can go to. Ehhhh... Bad food. I got the general tso chicken and it was horrible! The chicken was soft and not crispy at all. The sauce on my general tso chicken was bad too. It had a orange citrus taste to it. They had better chicken wings because the wings were actually crispy, but their fried rice that we got with the chicken wings were super bland. It tasted like white rice, so we added more soy sauce to it and it was still bland. There were no vegetables like onions in the fried rice. The positive things about this place was their mumba sauce, which was actually really tasty, but not the best mumba sauce I have ever tried. They had really good crab rangoon. It was crispy and delicious. They also serve boba tea here, which is a plus. They had a decent list of flavors to choose from. read more

Sunday, July 22, 2018 I had been quite a fan and frequent customer of Hong Kong Express in the past. Tonight though was a great disappointment. We decided to order online for pick up in the restaurant. We had a coupon for a free order of lo mein with our pick order. I was disappointed to find out when we placed our order for pick up, that they would not honor the coupon with an online order. They said they only honor the coupon for orders that are called in for pick up not for orders placed online for pick-up. After a lengthy discussion about why that made no sense since in both cases they were saving money on no delivery cost, they finally agreed to make a one time offer to honor the coupon, but only after I told them to cancel my order. I should mention that the order we placed was $104 including a sizable tip on a pick up order. We picked up the order and when got home and tried to eat our free order of lo mein, we discovered that red pepper flakes had been added to the meal and it was unbearably hot to eat. I returned to the restaurant with my order of lo mein and when I confronted the cashier, she argued with me claiming I had requested spicy lo mein, which I didn't. I believe that the restaurant willfully retaliated against me for asking them to honor their pick up order coupon or cancel my order. Having been a general manager of a restaurant I am patient with slow service and mistakes, but this was unacceptable. Hong Kong Express lost my business this evening. If you want great Chinese food in the Burke/Annandale area, let me highly recommend Hunan West in Kings Park Shopping Center and their manager, Alan. The portion size is large enough to fill you up. I usually have leftovers. The quality is your average Chinese-American takeout -- not amazing but not bad at all. Also, my other reason I come here often is because they are super fast and efficient; also the place looks pretty clean and tidy. The price is average. We just dropped in with my wife for a quick bite to eat for lunch. Never had been here before even though we live close by. We each had a lunch special plus a pot of hot tea...total bill under $17. I ordered online for take out (house fried rice, pan fried noodles, lemon chicken, crab Rangoon) for my family. The web site descriptions do not match the food. for example, " house fried rice" includes three meats (chicken, beef, shrimp) but this is not stated on the menu. I was expecting no meat. Pan fried noodles says "choice of beef, chicken, shrimp." however, you do not get a prompt to choose one meat and the meal includes all three meats (chicken, beef, shrimp). i was not satisfied with the order, since the food I received ($55) did not match the description. Big disappointment at the end of my day when I was looking forward to the splurge of Chinese take-out. I called the store and spoke to the manager. he basically told me I should've known to write "no shrimp" or "specific instructions" on my order.
