My wife and I have been frequenting this restaurant for years and it never fails to have really delicious food choices at very reasonable prices. The service is excellent, the food delicious, and we've always been more than pleased. It's no wonder they have been voted Anacortes's best Asian restaurant time and again! In a town with too many pizza and burger establishments it's nice to know we have this restaurant as a really nice choice for something different! Yesterday I got three things of pork fried rice, me and my dad both got sick. It tasted so much different than it usually does. It was like the pork was bad, I didn't eat anything else just the pork fried rice and I was sick puking like I got food poisoning it didn't have the regular pork in it like it usually does. It was chunks of meat that wasn't even barbecued. Pork tasted way old. I'm not eating there anymore. every time I've been there in the past they had long strips of barbecue pork like you buy in the store in it. This was way different. I don't recommend anyone eating there. I used to love this place. I have been eating at this establishment since they first opened in the 80's. With the exception of a single item that was overcooked (promptly recooked by staff), this has been a very good Chinese restaurant. We recently dined here. The menu looks changed, but for the most part still the same food....so we thought. We ordered our usual combination plate. When it arrived, I immediately noticed the order was incorrect. They substituted regular chow mein for subgum chow mein (as advertised on menu). I mentioned this to the server. He said he would bring the subgum as ordered. In the end, the subgum was substandard. It lacked several of the ingredients (such as almonds, water chestnuts, and pan fried noodles), that it historically contained. Also, the gravy they previously used on the almond fried chicken was changed to a simple brown gravy with a funky taste. We inquired whether the restaurant was under new ownership. The server reluctantly said yes. I would not recommend this restaurant under the current style of food preparation. A message to the new owners; this is a small town and we notice! read more

This was my first time at Hong Kong Garden. I can see why this place has been here since the 80's and a true staple of Anacortes. All honesty this is some of the best Chinese food I have had. The taste, quality and presentation of food is spot on. Even with one server at the time I went in with my brother, service was absolutely amazing, checked on us throughout our visit, was very open to answering questions about things on the menu, very tentative even having to multitask. The atmosphere was very peaceful and calm where you can actually conversate where you don't feel like you are shouting. This place is definitely a must try if you are in the Anacortes area and craving excellent Chinese food, with good portions at a good price. The WORST Chinese food I have ever had. The so called "pork chow mein"consisted of only vegetables which were bland (literally tasted of nothing) and a very small amount of ground pork. There was a TINY portion of "noodles" (I'm not sure what they were but definitely not noodles) that were awful and also tasted of nothing. The sweet and sour pork looked pink to me as well. All the food came out hot. Each entree we tried was just as good as the one before. Prices were reasonable (less than what were paid for breakfast this morning!) Don't let the older exterior fool you, this is a super good Chinese restaurant. One of the only Chinese restaurants in the region that has 1700 F woks (found out from a friend) directly from China. This is why all the food comes out so quickly and the meat is not rubbery, while the veggies still have great body. They don't overly depend on spice, but instead, fresh ingredients, and homemade sauces. Don't get me wrong, you can order very spicy dishes, but, even if you order without heat, everything has wonderful flavor and depth. We have literally been coming to this restaurant for decades, and it just gets better and better as time goes on. I live in Blaine, but I avoid the Whatcom County Chinese food because I've been spoiled by Hong Kong Garden. If you don't like this place, you don't like authentic, fresh and delicious Chinese food. read more

After reading reviews I was super nervous about giving this place a try. Food poising just didn't sound appetizing... but my family was insistent so I went along with low expectations. With that being said, I'm not sure what the negative reviews are all about. The restaurant was clean, our server was attentive and the food was better than I expected. Our family ordered the house chow mein, sesame chicken, sweet and sour pork, egg rolls and pot stickers. The chow mein was my favorite and the serving size was HUGE. Sesame chicken / sweet and sour pork were average but good. The egg rolls were literally the size of fried burritos! While they are not the standard egg roll, I actually liked them better than most. Oh, and they have Mac & Jacks on tap! The only complaint I could give was the price tag which I felt was a little high. All in all, I will definitely be eating here again with the fam! read more

I stopped here because the parking lot was packed and I thought that was a good sign. The server was very nice. There was one other customer in the dining room at another table. It appeared everyone was in the bar. My food came quickly. It was cold. The Almond Chicken had a bright yellow congealed sauce. It tasted awful. I couldn't cut into the chicken it was so tough. The Sweet and Sour Pork was also cold and tough. The sauce was from a bottle I am sure. They had many certificates saying they were the best of Anacortes but the last one was from 2009. The KONG is great! This is the place we go to meet up with friends to wind down, watch the game, shoot pool, and hang. The soups are really good! Their signature soup is HUGE! I was visiting the area and wanted some good Chinese food. I was craving some shrimp fried rice and orange chicken. I stopped in at the Hong Kong Garden and had to settle for broccoli beef instead of the orange chicken. I am not sure what it was I got but it was far from what I am used to. The broccoli beef looked like they steamed the beef and the sauce was clear and the whole dish had not taste. The shrimp fried rice had baby shrimp, sprouts and rice. No egg, or diced veggies. It's been a while since I've been here, a couple years. I will preface this by saying, yes, this is American Chinese Food, yes it has no curb appeal, but it does have pretty good food. We came with a party of 13 for dinner and for one, the service is great. The waitress let us know we were ordering too much food and how many orders of the family combo we should get, and she was right. We started with egg drop or hot and sour soup. The egg drop was the only down fall of the meal, just a basic chicken broth, almost like Campbell's chicken noodle, with some chunks of ground pork, cellophane noodles, and diced water chestnuts. We also had the bbq pork, it was good but a little dry for my taste. It was served with the usual hot mustard, ketchup, and sesame seeds. For the main dishes we got mongolian beef (stir fried with vegetables in a tangy, sweet, and spicy sauce), almond fried chicken (very crisp with a savory sauce, I also like how it's whole breasts which are sliced when served), pork fried rice, pork chow mein (better than I thought it would be, thin egg noodles fried with onion, bean sprouts, sliced bbq pork), fried prawns (very crisp large whole prawns, very good and plentiful, we got a side of sweet and sour to go with it), and lastly one order of vegetable chow mein (very fresh assorted vegetables in a thickened broth sauce served on crunchy noodles). All in all the food was very good, huge amounts, we had two large trays of everything that was split one on each side of the table. Now, I've had amazing true chinese food in Seattle and Vancouver BC, the real deal Sichuan style, etc. This is not like this at all, this is real deal AMERICAN CHINESE, and combined with the great service in giving it 4 stars. Looking for a quick Chinese fix, I hit up the HK Garden looking for an entree and appetizer that would satisfy a couple for dinner. 1. The WORST Sweet & Sour Chicken EVER. When I opened the container, I said, 'what the hell is this' and thought I got the wrong meal. Little did I realize that what I was looking at was 2 chicken breasts barely breaded and cut into 1.5" wide strips, but not actually cut through. The sauce was served on the side in a little box and the rice in the same small box. Splitting the 2 slabs of chicken between us, the chicken basically slid out of the grease coated crust/breading. 2. The SALT, I mean Hot & Sour soup. The flavor and soup materials weren't terrible, but the salt was so thick, I could only manage 5 spoonfuls before running to the kitchen to make a banana smoothie to prevent a heart attack. With only 2 Chinese joints in town, you're really left with one other choice. I'll save that review for the next Chinese run. Quench your thirst my friends. Cheers. read more

We ordered and shared the following: ---BBQ pork ($8:50)- we both enjoyed this. Mustard was spicer than normal & that suited us well :-) --- Chicken Chow Mien with pan fried noodles ($9). Didn't like the tiny dark chicken, the sprouts didn't taste fresh (numerous), celery fresh, very few noodles. Overall "okay." ---Cashew Chicken (Aprox $10), ingredients good, chicken good, etc BUT sauce much too sweet almost like a sweet and sour sauce. Could have been a winner - eh but it just wasn't. Tea- strong dark blend Fortune cookies- rose brand (love them). Service- Odd, off? The waitress seemed always out of breath. Her voice was too loud, but she may have hearing loss because several times I observed her have difficulty hearing other staff. She had a joyous spirit (humming and singing to the radio - though she didn't know the words...it was kinda endearing). Well that's our experience. Come on guys....been a long time customer and have rated it fair in the past. Tonight was a disaster. Got take out hot from bar. Soup lid melted and soup not only ruined from melted plastic but all over my new car. Shrimp and meat dishes were stale/rubbery. I would not be posting this but when we called to complain about the soup melt down just recieved attatude. I think we have a replacement on the future but can't be sure from the response. I am 33, and I grew up in Anacortes. I also grew up going to the Hong Kong Garden. Every time my mom was out of town, Dad would take us kids out to Chinese food. It was always a very special occasion. I am still a loyal fan of the Hong Kong, and I eat there regularly. Everything I've tried there is good. Take out orders are usually ready within 15 minutes. Eating in the establishment has been a good experience as well. They keep my soda filled and check on us throughout the meal. I've noticed in the reviews some confusion about the Chow Mein. It is not traditional Chow Mein with the noodles. If that is what you want, then make sure you order the options labeled pan-fried noodles under the Chow Mein menu. Need to access the menu? Late review: The owner (I assume) of this place literally mocked me for ordering too much food! On Two separate occasions! I ordered an 8 person family meal for about 14 people. It was a takeout order for a party at my home. The owner actually told me I was too fat and didn't need this much food. I tried to tell him it was for a large party.
