This review is for takeout alone. We were in the area and decided to try this Chinese place. We got the steamed dumplings, beef and broccoli combo and general tao chicken combo. The dumplings were the first let down. The filling tasted like breakfast sausage and that is not the taste I'm looking for when getting dumplings. The beef and broccoli was completely inedible. Beef tasted off and the fried rice tasted like it was just soaking in soy sauce. Combo comes with an egg roll that also wasn't good. It was a cold and rainy night and I really didn't feel like cooking. I also didn't feel like making the hike to our normal Chinese take out and so I searched yelp and found Hong Kong house. I am very happy I did. Our meal was very delicious and everyone was satisfied. The lady who helped us on the phone and when I arrived was so kind and very helpful! UMMMM so this is my new favorite Chinese spot in Virginia Beach! One of our lovely piano teachers mentioned how personable the staff was and how pleased she's been for years so here's my lunch experience today 7/21/20! A polite and efficient gentleman took my order clearly, with ease. 1. It arrived in like 15 mins. No cap. I'm only about 10 mins away from them but still. I paid $15 for Garlic Wings with Fried Rice, Hot & Sour Soup Lunch Special. Added on the 2 Lumpia and a sweet tea to make sure I met the $10 delivery minimum. 2. Y'all they put ice in my sweet tea! *Melts* I know it's simple but I have NEVER had a Chinese establishment include ice in my tea. It's hot as balls outside and inside my workplace so I am beyond grateful. 3. Hot mustard was in my bag. I LOVE the spicy mustard with my rolls/lumpia! Some places don't even have it, the ones that do need you to request it therefore I often forget to ask. It's just one packet but dammit I love good customer service! 4. The garlic sauce is delish and the wings were fried hard just like I asked. The soup is AMAZING with real pork and fresh ingredients. The lumpia are long, perfectly crunchy and are mostly beef actually! My vegetables were chopped very fine inside. My tea didn't have the hint of lemon I expected but was perfectly sweet and not sticky sweet. I love them already lol! Can't wait to try more! read more

The chicken wings are huge and deformed looking. Look people, some places just shouldn't have fried chicken on the menu. Also, a little salt and pepper won't hurt on the chicken. Service was fast and wings were really tough. Now I know why they were quiet. I noticed wing places opening everywhere. It's out of control! Stop people, stick to your specialties. If I lived in the neighborhood, Hong Kong House would certainly be my spot for Chinese take-out! I know they have been in existence for awhile because I recall trying them at their previous store-front. I thought it was ok then but, now for Chinese take out I was a pig-in-mud. Their flavors have improved. I kept asking my friends, am I just hungry or is this food just good? It was certainly delicious. We ordered almost everything on the menu. I was impressed w/ their Steamed Dumplings, House Lo-Mein(good portion of meat), Pork Fried Rice, egg roll, Crab Rangoon, Wonton Egg Drop soup, and Hot & Sour soup. Every dish had flavor and their lo-mein even had fresh green onions! Hot & Soup soup had strips of pork which is the way I like it. Food was definitely on the greasy side but, not bad. If anything, authentic and it tasted like I was sitting in Chinatown. Soooo happy. We also ordered their Garlic Chicken wings & regular wings. The wings were HUGE! The Garlic wings were delicious. My only recommendation is that they are fried longer and crispier. Service was awesome and someone well-versed took our order. So happy. :) I want more. read more

The sweet and sour pork was over cooked and was the first time that I never finished the combo I bought...

They used to be so good. Hence their prices being more. I ordered from them 30 minutes before closing time. I sat outside the whole time. Only took about 15 minutes so they had 15 minutes left before shutting down. I should have known what was about to happen when everyone started leaving when I got my food. They probably would have left sooner. Anyways, all of my food tasted like old cooking oil. Barf. read more

WORST CHINESE FOOD I HAVE EVER HAD. I truly thank you guys for putting your health at risk and staying open during the pandemic but the food itself is a no. I have tried them on two different occasions during this pandemic because my normal places are closed and ugh never again. They don't season anything. Everything is bland and they don't do the simplest of request such as shrimp fried rice in a combo. Their sesame chicken is overcooked and flavorless. Their fried rice is hard with no taste. Their sweet and sour chicken tastes like fried water, if that were possible. Their shrimp and broccoli even sucks. I thought for sure that couldn't be messed up but that too was terrible. This is one family-owned Chinese restaurant that has been around for as long as I've been a kid, so obviously, they are doing something right! They've recently moved down the street on Holland Road, and the place is a lot smaller than their original location, which was more suited for dining in. Not a big deal since I usually do take-out with them. I've been a huge fan of their all day specials because their portions are huge; one entrée and two side items, for S6.25! Didn't feel like cooking dinner the other night so hubby and I decided to order some Chinese. The last few times we ordered Chinese food we were disappointed. I wanted to try somewhere different and Hong Kong House is not that far from my house. When I called in my order, the lady who answered the phone was extremely nice. We ordered 2 Lumpias, a large order of House Lo Mein and 6 chicken wings. She told me it would arrive in 40 mins. When we got the food, it was not piping hot but it was warm. The lumpias were super long. I was not expecting it but it was a good surprise. They were actually tasty as well. I think chicken wings from Chinese restaurants never really fail. They almost always taste the same to me (pls no one come after me for saying that). The house special lo mein was freakin awesome! Had shrimp, chicken, beef and pork in it! It was fully loaded. I have been ordering take out from Hong Kong House ever since their original location. In my opinion HKH has best sweet and sour chicken though as of late it has not been as crispy and the portion size has decreased. I also believe they have the best pork fried rice! I really love this mom and pop restaurant for comfort food or if you want some hot soup for cold weather or not feeling well. Their options are pretty wide, crab Rangoons are huge, and they're veggie crispy chow mein is not what I'm used to bc the noodles are mini crisps but the veggies are super flavorful and yummy mixed in fried rice. My new favorite go to ! I've had several bad run ins with Chinese food lately but LAWD this food was so good ! The orange chicken was crunchy , moist , perfect! The Singapore mei fun was hands down so good , the beef and broccoli was okay . They charge extra for pork friend rice which I think is odd . But other than that this food is to DIE FOR ! Average. I got the garlic wings, shrimp fried rice, and an eggroll. The wings were flavorful, and my eggroll was good. Were they dropped the ball for me was the fried rice. While the flavors were fine, I don't like my fried rice looking like dirty rice. Either they need to use a fresher oil, clean their pan, or both. When I order fried rice it should not be dark brown, it makes the rice less appeasing in my opinion. The prices are fair, a solid place for Chinese if you aren't a picky eater. read more

I had a 4 hour break until my next class and decided to go back to Virginia Beach and grab some Chinese. It was about 2pm ish and I was in time for their lunch special. I planned on getting sweet and sour chicken but unfortunately it wasn't on their lunch menu. However, sweet and sour pork was part of the deal and I thought that pork would've been a good alternative. Shoot, I was wrong. I don't want to come off as an a-hole, but the texture of the pork felt like I was eating gizzards. I actually like eating gizzards too but not when I'm expecting to eat pork. I had to dunk the pork in the sweet and sour sauce to discard the texture. I'm keeping Hong Kong House at 4-stars because the general tso chicken is still BOMB. That dish in particular separates this restaurant from other Chinese take outs. New to the area and this was the first Chinese restaurant I tried, and I was blown away by how delicious everything was. The eggrolls were amazing and so was the fried rice (I usually dont like fried rice, I always get white rice but YUM). The wonton soup was really nice too. I got a side of sweet & sour chicken - WOW! So crispy, fresh and amazing sauce. They give you tons of extra sauce for your delivery order, cant have too many sauce packets.
