Hong Kong Pearl continues to live in the dreary aftermath of the COVID Pandemic when most Chinese chop shops reduced their footprint to primarily takeout business with dining room shut down or operating in a skeletal mode. Sad to see what was once a decent suey palace turned into a plexiglass window for orders and front of house reduced to a few tables they prefer you don't use and the rest of the space a sloppy mess for storage and food preparation. Not that the grub is bad, it's just that they clearly don't care what it looks like, nor want you around any longer than necessary. Pre-Covid their food was wonderful. After Covid their food went down hill. It's worse now than ever. We decided to give it another try tonight, 10/7/23; the fried rice was dry, the beef in sticks were over cooked and tough, the sweet and sour chicken combination was downright awful, the pint of shrimp fried rice was dry and awful, the boneless spare ribs were dry and over cooked, the general tso chicken was dry and again, the fried rice was awful. The only thing edible in the entire meal, were the fortune cookies; which they don't make; they get them from an outside source. I would advise people to stay from away from Hong Kong Pearl, unless you enjoy throwing $70.00 away on inedible food. Stopped in for dinner recently on a weeknight and I wasn't blown away by the food at all. The service was prompt and the staff is friendly. The menu is pretty much full of Chinese American dishes. The inside is a bit dated and dimly lit but seemed clean. They have a takeout area and the aisle leading to the pickup window was constantly full of people waiting and picking up their grub. Maybe the takeout tastes better? I ordered the Chop Suey with chicken and asked for it to be spicy. It came out quickly and had quite a bit of chicken in it, but the meat was flavorless and dry. The rest of the ingredients were fresh and the spice was just right. Unfortunately the building is currently closed because they are undergoing renovations so it's take out only. OMG I forgot how good this food is it's an absolutely amazing American Chinese food place. The service is good even tho sometimes they can get a bit busy. I can't wait to see what the place looks like when they open back up the dine in area. The ambiance in the past was always a very nice location. Their Dumplings are hand rolled and made. I watched them do it myself, very impressive. The Dumplings are served with a brown dipping sauce which is delicious. Beef on a Stick was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The Chicken comes with White Rice but I ordered the Pork Fried Rice to pair with my chicken and it's was very good and Chicken was moist and also delicious. I have been coming to this establishment for 30 years and I'm never disappointed and I have been to many other Chinese restaurants but this one is still number 1 in my book. They literally mess up every takeout order (no rice when we ordered three entrees, missing entrees that they don't want to give us even when we go back to get them, etc.) and when you ask them to fix their mistakes, they are rude to you. Called here on a Saturday at 4:45pm. Was told 1 hour and 15 minutes. I show up at 6:15. Easily 10 people in line, all complaining about how long they've been waiting. Guy running the register refuses to help anyone, I had to basically force myself to the front and ask him to check if my order was ready. This place is so unorganized it's sad. I waited another 30 minutes here. So it's 45 minutes after the time he told me. TWO HOURS AFTER I ORIGINALLY ORDERED! Luckily I didn't pay yet. So I left, called Hung Luck and ordered exactly what I ordered here. By the time I got to Hung luck my food was ready, Hung Luck was very busy and they were still able to get my food ready within 20 minutes. I will never come here again. I got the address from the drug rep and i went here to eat dinner . The service was great and the food was really good. I ordered the sesame chicken white rice and a egg roll. Stumbled across this little little spot during a weekend getaway to Sesame with the kids. We're from NYC so our Chinese food taste buds are pretty sharp and we are often skeptical of Chinese food outside of our circle of trusted spots. It didn't take long to realize that Hong Pearl was a keeper! The sesame chicken, lomein, pork fried rice and dumplings are all amazing. The egg rolls are great and the prices are beyond reasonable. We're a family of 5 (3 under the age of 11) and we take food home all the time! The food is great, the atmosphere is adequate (not date night chill) and the service is efficient. We ordered tonight and they told us 40 minutes. I was there over an hour waiting for my order. I asked for extra rice, was charged for it and I even asked the woman if it was in the bag. She said it was. I got home and the extra rice was not in the bag but they charged me $1.25 for it. Anyway, I bit into my egg roll and grease squirted everywhere. It tasted foul, like rotten food. My plate and hand had grease all over them. I ate my sweet & sour chicken but after I was done eating, I had to throw up. I'm not prone to vomiting. I swear it was the foul egg roll. I don't know...I don't see why everyone loves this place so much. I grew up in a Chinese-Vietnamese household so I know what good Chinese food is. I think this restaurant has decent food at a cheap price. But at the end of the day, their food is Chinese-American food. It's not authentic Chinese food (which is fine) but their food, in general, is so greasy and have the same aromatic flavors. This place is fine for and cheap and quick bite, but please don't say this is the best Chinese food you've ever had because Chinese food is so much more than this. Chinese food has fresh vegetables that balance out the savory umami flavors for the meat dishes. Some dishes are refreshing, others are creamy and sweet. They use beef that taste and feel like real beef. Go to Chinatown in Philly to eat real Chinese food. It's worth the experience. If you do go here, I do like their egg drop soup.
