We can only get here a couple times of year, but our last visits were exceptional. On our visit last Saturday, 01-04-2025, our server, Erendira, was excellent in her job. She was running around on the early dinner rush doing efficient work to take orders and bringing food to tables. I believe she deserves an honorable mention for her hard work. It was appreciated quite well by me and my wife. As for the food, we ordered the Rickshaw D special for two, and we were very pleased with the food quality. I have been going to Hong Kong for 30 years. I am ashamed to say that tonight was one of the worst experiences I have ever had from what used to be a great restaurant. Below is a list of items that reflects my 1 star review: 1. When I called in my order I specifically asked and made sure that the pork & seeds would come with hot mustard. A quote from the host "Well absolutely, our pork and seeds always come with hot mustard, unless you have been somewhere else." First off, what a weird and off putting response. Secondly, guess who didn't get hot mustard with their to go order....me. Oh, and I didn't get seeds either.....cool. 2. Make sure you look at the photos in my review. Those are not tortilla chips you are seeing, that is Hong Kong's version of fried wontons. Fooled me. Oh and by the way we paid $10 for 8 tortilla chips... 3. People used to ask me what my favorite food was and I used to respond to them, specifically, "pork fried rice and mandarin chicken from Hong Kong". Now that statement couldn't be further from the truth. The mandarin chicken tasted like the batter was fried in week old oil. It had no crunch, was soggy and disgusting. Out of both items I still had hope for the fried rice. My hope was quickly tarnished as I took my first bite of rice. TASTELESS! I understand that their old cooks have probably retired or quit, but I can't imagine they would change the recipe, right??? Both items taste nothing like the days of old and Hong Kong is nowhere near my top 10 list. Idk if it makes my top 50 to be honest..... 4. Not only did I personally have this experience tonight, but I shared it with my wife, mother and step dad. All who grew up in Nampa and all who used to enjoy eating at Hong Kong. Across the board the consensus is to never eat there again....ever. So, if you are feeling up for it and want to order from this restaurant I have a few recommendations. - Don't.... spend your money elsewhere. Read the reviews and we were not sure what to expect but we wanted Chinese and it was open so off we went. Wow are we pleased we did! Hong Kong Restaurant is big clean and cool. The serving staff were fast and attentive. The food was awesome and plentiful. We shared a Ricksha D. Wow! The salad which I wasn't even sure I'd like was amazing. Rice appetizers Broccoli beef full of flavor and color. They didn't overcook and things weren't greasy (often a danger at Chinese restaurants). Things were fresh and fantastic. Go there - even if it isn't the only restaurant. It's worth it. Not sure what happened with some of the one star reviews but they are a five star now. read more

I have seen the neon lights of Hong Kong for years and finally tried it tonight. We were presently surprised. Had a 20-ish minute wait for dinner, but the staff was very friendly and the waiting area was spacious enough. Our food was good. Came out hot and were good sized portions. For an appetizer we ordered two egg rolls. Very good! They came with pineapple sweet and sour sauce, which was the unnaturally red and super sweet sauce that is typical of Chinese restaurants and just as delicious. Hubby ordered the Generals chicken and I got the Ginger Beef. Both were tasty and large enough to bring leftovers home. My only complaint, if it's really that is the bar/lounge is closed, probably due to covid. But the lights outside still show "Lounge" and the menu says full bar available. Nope. Not even beer or wine. Will be back and will definitely try takeout or delivery. read more

My husband and I are visiting Nampa and he found Hong Kong Restaurant and decided to take me there on Mother's Day because I am from HK. I give it an OK because the service was good, the interior was comfy and clean. The food was "meh". First of all, I think the restaurant name is definitely misleading because most of the dishes on the menu is American Chinese, I would say maybe a couple of the dishes are Hong Kong. We ordered Hot and Sour Soup, Chow Fun with beef and Mongolian Chicken. The Hot and Soup was the worst I've had - the flavor was fine but it was nothing like a hot and sour soup - nobody uses beef broth as the base and put beef in hot and sour soup!!! The Mongolian Chicken was tasty - my husband liked it. I can't tell if it was authentic because we don't have Mongolian Chicken in Hong Kong and I have never ordered it. The Beef Chow Fun was bland. The noodle (fun) was al dente - which is a big NO NO in a chow fun dish. Both chicken and beef dishes were greasy. I asked the wait staff for some chili paste because my chow fun was so bland. They charged me $0.89 for the paste! I can't believe they charge you for that, even though it's not much. I was happily surprised to see a Hong Kong restaurant in Nampa but I was very disappointed and I think they should change their name to something else, nothing Hong Kong at all. read more

I prefer online to calling in because better chance order is right. When I went to pick up food, the order was wrong and when I told pointed this out only response I got is that it is already paid for. No apologies or offer to try and make right. The lunch specials are very limited and you can only pick two items on their lunch special list. All of the meat dishes on the list are sweet, no option to have something savory. And it costs extra to substitute something and you can't do a double order of an item, it has to be different items. This was our very first time eating at the Hong Kong restaurant. Of course, we picked a Tuesday. As most people seem to know already and of course we did not, the dining room was closed. They close the dining room every Tuesday due to their shortage of employees. Damn Covid! It took me a while to realize, but the prices listed for their food is not accurate on the web, or on their menus. I found out, they raised everything a $1.50 but have yet to update their menus in the restaurant, or their to-go menus or what is posted online. I witnessed many customers complaining about the price increase without being told before they placed their order. That was a bit awkward. Now to the food. We took our order home, Mandarin Chicken and Sweet and Sour Pork with fried and steamed rice. Neither entree was marked. We had to call back to identify the proper entrees. The pork was spot on, tender and delicious. The Mandarin Chicken was extremely over cooked. Some pieces were over crisp, seriously over cooked. That pretty much messed up our dinner. We don't plan on returning anytime soon, definitely not on a Tuesday. Funny, you never think to ask your server..."Are your menus up to date?" "Are the prices correct before I order?" You'd think you'd be told as you were seated that there are changes to the menu that the costumer should be made aware of. They never told us. If I didn't hear them tell other customers on the phone, I'd have never known. Our list of restaurants to avoid in Nampa just grew. This place has gone WAY down hill since they made changes during the pandemic! They used to be our favorite restaurant but the breaded chicken is now usually soggy and chock full of fat, their drinks seem badly watered down; the egg flower soup is usually hit or miss--but NEEDS soy sauce added 9 times out of 10; the last 2 times we went the fried rice and their special chow mein was BADLY over salted with soy sauce and the home made plum sauce has WAY more sugar in it than normal! When they get things right--they knock it out of the park but we've started trying other Asian restaurants now after feeling like we got hosed for bad food that also made me sick the last 3 times we went! By the way--their jasmine tea is NOT decaf despite the claim that it is! I probably won't go back again unless or until my family tells me they've improved. We are new to the area and it's been almost a year since I have had Chinese food. After reading the reviews I was excited to go to the Hong Kong restaurant. The place was large and clean and the staff was very helpful. They were helpful with any questions and made sure my water was full. Unfortunately, I'm still craving Chinese food. They had great chicken gravy, as long as you put it on mashed potatoes. It did not belong in the almond chicken. Waited about 45 sec hung up and waited 10 mins to call back when they were less busy. I called back and the same rude girl answered. Said the greeting and asked to put me hold again. I said again! They served it with tarter sauce, I asked for another sauce like sweet and sour and was told it was .89 cents. Next dish was chow mein that tasted off. The beef was old. Very disappointed with this place. First of all, we were the first people there for dinner which was kind of odd but it was early so nothing to sweat about. The first issue we had was the fact that you can't do substitutions for anything. I ordered the generals chicken, it comes with rice normally but I wanted chow mein instead. Well the waitress said you can't substitute the rice for anything else and I was like ok fine. But then my spouse asked if we can get a side order of chow mein but the waitress also said "no, we don't do side orders of anything." Which is extremely disappointing as that in my opinion loses business because I would of liked to sample a few things and that is very unaccommodating. If they can not accommodate customers by serving side orders or substitutions that is terrible customer service. WE are the ones paying here, not them so that just pissed me off. But now we get to the meal. My spouse order the shrimp with steamed broccoli, veggies and rice which wasn't the best considering the entire plate was all broccoli. We even picked out the shrimp that was on the plate and there was only FIVE. You can see how much you get served here from the pictures on other reviews so that is pretty pathetic. But my meal was the worst of all. The generals chicken read as a breaded chicken, which makes you think it will be nice and crispy but it wasn't at all, and it comes in a spicy sweet and sour sauce. I don't know what kind of sauce they put on it but it was dark brown like gravy and had the consistency of gravy but it had such an odd flavor that I only took maybe four bites and couldn't stomach it anymore. The chicken was also all dark meat which I absolutely dislike but it didn't mention that in the description. If I had known to ask or something I would of. Not to mention that it was ALL just these big things of chicken and little veggies which was disappointing and the fact that the food was burning hot and we could barely eat it, pretty sure they nuked the hell out of it in the microwave. Overall this was a bad experience and it sucks because my family has been going here for the last 20 years and it has been pretty good. I don't know what happened this time around but I won't ever go here again. Also the fact we wasted $88 dollars on this excuse for a dinner. WAY overpriced for the terrible food you get. Reading through the reviews, I can see that what happened to me tonight is apparently the norm for this place and I won't be returning. I made an order at 6:13 for pickup. I was originally going to have it delivered, but figured it would be faster and easier if I went to get it. I mean, they quoted me an hour and a half for delivery and 30 minutes for pickup, so it should be; right? Wrong. So I go over at exactly 6:45. It was hard to get to the restaurant because there was a huge accident on 12th and it was completely blocked off. I go inside and I proceed to stand there for another half hour. They finally bring me my food. I was totally forgiving about the fact that it took double the time to get the food than they said it would even though I had been working my butt off all day and all I had to eat was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It is Friday night and the place was busy. I get it. What happened next was where things got ugly. I'm pulling into my garage almost four miles away from this place when they call to inform me that they forgot to give me a large portion of my food. They took an extra half hour to make it and they still couldn't make sure it was right. So I asked if they were going to compensate me for the dish and/or me having to come down there AGAIN to pick up my food while all of my other $42 worth of food gets cold. They'll compensate me 10 percent on my next order. Uhm, excuse me? I have to pay you more money for you to make your mistake on this order right? So inappropriate. I walk back into the restaurant and proceed to wait AGAIN while the girl goes to the back and talks to her supervisor about whether or not they were going to make good on this all while the food I originally picked up is still in my car... getting cold. To top it off, some rando customer was giving me a hard time about being upset about it, but when they brought his order out to him, the first thing out of his mouth is, "Are you sure this is everything?" Guess it only matters if they get it right if it's his order. Unreal. So the girl "helping" me walks out and shoves a bag at me and tells me, "This is BBQ pork. It's equal to $9." I was like, "Yeah, no," and I walked out. If you're going to compensate me $9, compensate me the actual $9 for the food you forgot to give me. Don't compensate me with food I didn't order and don't want that is "equal to" $9. Bottom line, we didn't sit down to eat our cold, coagulated food until 7:49 and this place lost a customer.
