Honig Vineyards was one of my personal favorites of the vineyards we visited while out in Napa. We were fortunate enough to have Armando showing us the wines we would be tasting. He was super knowledgeable and descriptive in telling us about each bottle. He also did a great job in telling us the details of each bottle. He also shared with us his favorite type of wines and what years he prefers if any as well. Also, a plus that they are dog friendly, it was great that I was able to bring my pup along. Honig was the third winery on our trip. People were starting to get tired, but this lovely winery renewed everyone's energy. We were greeted by friendly staff. We got to sit at this large table outside under the shade of some beautiful trees. There was also a pleasant breeze that surprised while we talked and enjoyed the wines. David was our waiter and he helped make the trip much more enjoyable. He taught us about why the bottom of the wine bottle is shaped the way it is and how to properly pour a bottle of wine. I always take suggestions from people who work at wineries very seriously, which is how I ended up at Honig. The exterior almost looks like a cross between a small winery, and your rich friend's really nice house (you know the one.) Walking in, it's almost like heading into a boutique store and at the end, where there would be a cash register, there's the tasting table. The three staff members there were super friendly, almost to the point of making me suspicious. We didn't have an appointment but they were nice enough to let us taste. It's almost a little jarring at first to have such a laid back experience. But I quickly fell into the comfort, while we were all standing around a small table. I ended up taking home a few whites, but what I really took home was that even in Napa you can have an intimate experience like you know the owners. I also loved the fact that they have pictures of each employee up on the walls. And they gave me some excellent dinner recommendations. It was raining that day, but it looks like they also have a nice setup to take your tastings outdoors. read more

If you like the Sauvingon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvingon varietals, you will most likely love Honig. Those are the two main wines they sell and they are both really good. There is a late harvest wine, rose and variations on the cab as well. The tasting experience here is by appointment only and worth the extra effort. You check in, then sit inside the clubby tasting room or outside on the nice tree covered patio. The wait staff "serves" your tasting 4-5 wines like you are in a restraunt. They even brought us water and crackers, chatted about the wines and made for a very upscale tasting. Whites are $20 Reds $40 (start) and are great values for that price point. They have an annual Lobster Luncheon which we attended and was fantatstic. read more

Wow, I think this was one of my favorite places to go for a tasting. I picked up the 1999 Cab (Library collection I think) afterwards since it was so smooth and tasty. The guy who hosted us was pretty amazing - totally unpretentious but very well educated and knew just how much to leave you alone and how much to be involved with the conversation. Good wines, nice space, and for me, one of the places I almost don't wanna Yelp about to keep it my secret. Make a reservation though as I think you can only do private tastings there. read more

This winery is sorta in a land of it's own - you have to get to it through lots of twists and turns, around a dirt road, and once you're there, it's a quaint little building, with beautiful lighting and clean rooms, especially the restrooms. I came on a rainy day, so it wasn't too crowded, but we had reservations for a tasting for 4. There were 3-4 wine samples for $15 - I'm not a huge fan of the wine here, but the experience was fun. The host was nice and helpful with explaining each wine. Of all the wines, I liked the sweet dessert wine the most - it had a "honey" or "flowery" flavor kick to it which made it interesting. The best experience out of the 3 wineries I visited. One of the people in my party was actually a regular up in Napa Valley, so he made sure that we stopped by Honig. It was our last stop so we took our time. Our host, David, was so good to us. Gave us chocolates and let us try a little more than what we paid for because we had a regular customer with us. The rest of the staff was great too! We left after trying 2008 Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon (I forgot what year) and a dessert wine. We really enjoyed our overall experience here. Our host was super laid-back, chatted us up but left us alone to do our own socializing as well. The Rutherford Reserve sauv blanc was a pretty big hit with the group all around. I was the only one grooving on the late harvest, but that's in spite of my usual distaste for anything really sweet. We left with a couple bottles of the sauv, but if I had a hubby who would have helped me with it, I would have definitely sprung for a bottle of the late harvest too. Honig is a non-pretentious winery that produces a range of moderately priced wines that are quite good. The wine tasting experience was pleasant and unrushed. We tried a variety of wines including sav blanc, cab and a delicious dessert sav blanc wine. The personnel were pleasant and knowledgable and the shaded patio added to the enjoyment. We've been to many wineries in the area and man are over the top. This was not and for that reason made it so enjoyable. Reservations required. read more

The wine was great but the customer service was poor. No accommodation to our situation and it felt like they would rather us leave than be there. We understand that there are silly COVID regulations in place, but at some point ya gotta help out your loyal customers a little bit. We stopped by because another winery told us Honig was friendly. They were absolutely right! We didn't know we had to make a reservation for one of their "complete tastings", but the woman in the tasting room gave us her 5-minute version while she waited for her reservation to come in. She was very sweet, knowledgeable, and didn't put the pressure on us to buy a bottle. The grounds make you want to stay and hang out a while: lots of shade, good seating, and tucked away from the busy streets. Great place, will go again and actually make an appointment! read more

Love this wine and now that I've visited (twice) and love the vineyard. Ask for Gale, she is a lifer in Napa and gives a fun & sweet insider tour. You absolutely can't beat the Sav Blanc. They have a nice Cab as well. This is a small Boutique Winery, call ahead to make reservations. Their tour is of the property (not the wine making) and it's fun to hear the family involvement and pride. They treat everyone like a local (and it's fun to get the local gossip). Also ask for their favorite Napa wineries (they give great suggestions and recommendations). But don't ask about any Sonoma or outside wines... there is no universe outside of Napa Valley (ha ha ha...) really fun and a lot of character. read more

Recommended to me by a local, this place did NOT disappoint! Excellent experience. We did not have an appointment but thankfully on a Monday they were not inundated with people. We also got extremely lucky because an earlier scheduled group on a VIP tour had less people than they had reserved for so we were able to sneak tastes of wines not normally on the tasters list. Nestled in semi-private isolation in the dusty heart of Napa Valley's world-renowned Rutherford district, Honig is perhaps a bit shy about showing off in front of its many well-heeled neighbors. It's not that Honig has anything to be embarrassed about. It's just that the neighbors, they are big fish and the pond, it is rather small. Caymus. Grgich Hills. Joseph Phelps. Frog's Leap. Long Meadow Ranch. Cakebread. Robert Mondavi. Opus One. Any grape worth her phylloxera resistant rootstock would kill to share real estate with these celebrity vines. The Honig estate is virtually surrounded by much larger winery - Round Pond - and could easily be missed if you are driving too fast on Rutherford Road and speed past the modest sign leading to an unassuming gravel driveway, which ends in a couple of hundred yards at a guest parking area outside the tasting room. No drop ins here. You have to make seating reservations ahead of time (easy to do online with Yelp). Upon arrival, you'll find your name hand-written on a small sign, next to wine glasses, water, crackers, and 3-paneled menus with excellent tasting notes for the wines being poured that day, prices for bottles to purchase, and upcoming winery events. You are assigned your own tasting room guide, who pours the wines, discusses the vineyard, and will likely offer you postcards to write and mail to friends (while you post pics online using your selfie stick). It's a bit of a high tech meets low tech mashup, and for Honig, it fits. After all: what is a 3-generation family-run winery still doing in corporate-controlled Napa Valley, anyway? Why in the world would the children and grandchildren of the founding generation actually work at paying jobs at the winery, rather than jet off to Davos or Sun Valley? Did you take a wrong turn and end up in Sonoma instead? No, you just stumbled into one of those hidden spots in the Napa Valley where things are still vaguely normal. Where wines are well made, elegant, and approachable. Not bargains, but at the top quality end of their price tiers compared to the celebrity others. Napa's best Sauvignon Blanc under $20. The best Napa Valley blended Cabernet under $50. And while Honig won't wow you with rare varietals (Charbono, Zinfandel field blends, Valdiguié, etc.) or massive ranges of wines to choose from, it does sport two unique and beguiling wines that truly stand apart: a late-harvest "noble rot" Sauvignon Blanc dessert wine, estate harvested from a single vineyard block near the Napa River; and a 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon port-style "dulce" desert wine ($75 for 375ml) that compares extremely favorably to young vintage ports that would cost much more. At or above the $100 per bottle price point, you will find vineyard-designate 100% Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings that receive extensive barrel treatment in new French oak and that originate in some of the most coveted higher elevation mountain vineyards in the valley, such as the 2013 Bartolucci Cabernet. On a recent January 2017 tasting, our party of 4 preferred the 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet ($50) to the higher-priced wines, in part because it was more approachable young and had a pronounced Petit Verdot addition that gave it a certain signature that we liked: dark fruit but also herb and stone. The 2015 estate reserve Sauvignon Blanc ($28) gets additions of Sémillon and Muscat, and sees oak barrel aging and secondary fermentation, making it an elegant and sophisticated wine, one that is quite different from the $18 entry-level SB that many visitors have encountered before. You can very easily spend 90 minutes or more enjoying these Honig wines - the 4 on the list plus any additional "off menu" pours that you might get if you are nice and if bottles are already open. Do ask to try the Cabernet dulce, while it lasts. It is one of the best fortified red wines from California that I have tasted. Rains in November 2014 damaged the white grapes left on the vine, so they improvised an alternative using red grapes, and the results were amazing! The indoor seating options are more intimate and comfortable than the outdoor patio, especially in winter. Leather chairs, attractive wall art, gorgeous wine labels and bottle design, kind and attentive wine educators, the chance to meet members of the family who work at the winery: when you add it all up, it makes Honig stand out from its famously expensive and award-winning peers. You know what they say about the bees: small but mighty. This is very much the case at Honig! read more

We had 1.5 hrs to kill before our next wine tasting. Our first tasting was at ZD and we had an amazing experience so we asked our wine expert if she recommended a place near by and she recommended Honig she said she knew a woman who worked there and that they would let us drink a glass of wine. We called Honig after our ZD experience and no answer, then we called again and the manager who answered said they didn't do glasses and that we had to do an appt so we did we she asked how many people were coming we said 4 and she asked for my credit card info. We arrived and the manager saw me and i told her we had just called and were here for our appt and she said no there are no open appts and said the only way to drink anything was to buy a bottle and go to the picnic area (I was very confused because I told her we had just called). Then I insisted we had just called to make an appt and she was like oh yes you and told us where to sit (she didn't even apologize for being dismissive or if it was an honest mistake). We already felt a bit unwanted and uncomfortable. Our wine expert (server) comes by and brought 4 glasses and I told him one person was not going to drink so only 3 glasses and he took the extra glass away. Once we finished our tasting the 3 individuals who drank decided to buy a bottle we had enjoyed the wine despite the confusion at the beginning and they each charged their wine bottle on their own cards. I asked our wine expert (server) if the 3 tastings had already been charged on my credit card since i provided the info via the phone and he said that yes and 4 tasting had been charged, but I said that we only had 3 tastings since one individual doesn't drink. I asked him if he could refund me one tasting since we only had 3 and I made it clear since we arrived that only 3 were drinking. He said he had to go talk to his manager because he did not know if he could refund me. Manager comes out (same woman that did not want to sit us for a tasting we already had paid via the phone) and says she can't refund me because it has already been charged and says there was a miscommunication, she was trying to blame it on me saying that we said 4 people so she charged 4 people, even though I said only 3 tastings when we got seated to our server. Not my fault. She did not even bother to offer us a free bottle of wine or honey to make the equivalent price of the tasting, instead we had to ask for solution and asked her if could get something in return. All she offered was miserable jar of honey in return, even tough we each had purchased a bottle of wine on top of the tasting. Never coming here again or recommending it to people. So disappointed since our ZD experience was amazing and our wine expert recommended us Honig. Don't waste your time here, go to ZD! read more

We are wine club members and have enjoyed Honig wines for a couple of years. We had a reservation for yesterday to bring some family members. When we arrived no one seemed that interested in seating us or even that we were there. Once they finally seated us another big group arrived which seemed to fluster everyone working there. We sat there for a long time until someone finally came over in a rush and started to pour us our first tasting. Explaining the wine we were tasting seemed like an afterthought and there was definitely a vibe like we were a bother. We felt ignored and rushed all at the same time. While we did end up purchasing some wine, this visit left us disappointed. We'll be cancelling our wine club membership as we have several others who actually care if we are there. Wines are good and the ambiance is enjoyable but the staff needs to be more attentive and customers need to be appreciated. read more

Haven't been to Napa in quite some time but Honig was on my to do list. I love their Cab! Had a great tasting experience! We arrived early to our reservation and they were able to accommodate us. My only disappointment was we were still charged for tastings even though we had joined the wine club prior to leaving. I joined another club at a different winery and they comped the tasting fees because we had joined their club. Updated after a reply was posted to my review. If you are considering joining the wine club do it ahead of time and save yourself some $$. If their handout on the wine club was clearer I would have probably skipped joining and just continue to buy at my local wine store. read more

We've been coming to Napa for a long time and have been looking forward to trying this winery. At the end of the day this experience at Hoenig was the worst ever that I've had. First they screwed up our reservations and booked us for one day in advance. Second, our tasting was done in 20 minutes. The person helping us was extremely unhelpful and rushed us out the door. As good as their wines were the service and hospitality was not great. We would have joined their club but would never revisit their property again due to the service. I made a last-minute stop in California wine country and couldn't get a reservation at some of the bigger wine places, so I remembered this winery from a bottle I bought years back. I had never been to a winery, so I had absolutely no expectations. I was in all ways pleasantly surprised. The staff was amazingly helpful and nice and accommodated all my wine tastes. I am much more fond of red wine than white, and although Honig is more known for their whites, they found me a number of reds to try, many of which were not included in the tasting menu. Only one other group came while I was there, so it was almost a private tasting. Very quiet and exactly what I wanted. read more

My friends and I arrived here for a bachelorette party on a wine tour. We were seated and began with a tasting. Shortly after, Gail, the woman pouring for us, walked over and rudely insinuated that we were too inebriated to continue tasting. After we told her that we were in fact, NOT drunk and that we were just enjoying ourselves and celebrating our friend getting married, she proceeded to compare us to her daughter-in-law, stating that "she doesn't act the way you do, and she's your age". She continued to make rude, snide comments and walked off. At that point, we opted to leave due to the lack of service and discrimination that we had experienced. Before we left, I asked to speak to a manager and asked for the woman's name. She then proceeded to raise her voice and ask me why. Well, after you acted snobby and rude and other words I will refrain from using, I'm surprised you had to ask. I was finally able to speak to the manager and express my complaints about the lack of customer service and the discrimination we experienced with this woman. The manager seemed to care less about the complaints and pretty much disregarded them and then proceeded to ask, "How do you want me to fix this?" Well, I'd like you to fix it by addressing the rude employee that you have that was pleasant with everyone else around us whom happened to be a little older than us, and were of one race that we were not. I'm not sure if this is a usual thing here, but I'm not too eager to go back and figure it out. Needless to say we won't be coming back, I won't be recommending anyone to them, and the wine tour we were apart of also agreed to not bring anymore parties to this winery. read more

We had a wonderful tasting at Honig. It was super hot outside so we chose to do our tasting indoors. There are lots of tables outside on their patio if you want to hang out there and do your tasting. The pourer actually stayed with us the entire time, and hung out with us. She was very friendly and was very personable and we had good conversations about the different restaurants in the Napa Valley and she even told us some great recipes since her boyfriend is a student at the CIA. While at the same time she educated us about the winery, the owner, and their certified sustainable ways and the whole winery is solar powered which I thought was really cool. My favorites were the Sauvignon Blanc, Bartolucci Cab and definitely the dessert wine. We purchased a few bottles and got our tasting fees waved. read more

We arrived at ~3pm on a Thursday afternoon with no reservation but were happily greeted by our server John Burke who gladly showed us to a table for a tasting. We were offered 5 different wines (each even better than the one before!). They also give you crackers and a large pitcher of water to help cleanse your pallet. John was full of knowledge about Honig's wines and wine-making process and was happy to answer all of our questions - he definitely made our experience that much better! The outside patio is perfectly in the shade with a beautiful view of the vineyards and mountains. We will be back if ever in Napa again! read more

This was our last stop for our wine tour. The outside is part where the tables are were gorgeous. I loved the marble tables that we sat on. The patio area was covered in trees and umbrellas so no one suffered from the heat! hahah. The tasting itself was good. I did enjoy their cab and their late harvest.
