A screw fell off my 3 year old Maui Jim sunglasses and the lens popped out. The last time I sent a pair back to the Maui Jim repair service, only to find out that they wouldn't service the old model. Maui Jim gave me a 50% off coupon towards a new pair, but that was frustrating since the glasses only needed a screw. I found Honolulu Sunglass Shop's services on Yelp and Google search, so I brought the sunglasses in. Fast and friendly, and NO CHARGE! I will consider bringing other glasses when they need service. Freaky Tiki Tropical Optical is a cute place in Ala Moana street level right besides the Centerstage has a variety of brands wall to wall of shades of all types and I was looking for something specific since having my Lasik procedure to fix a bunch of my eye issues and am blessed to see thing so much more clearer, I just wanted something to help clear up the halos I do see when I'm driving. So here I did find a nice bright yellow lens needed for clearing up night glare while I'm driving and the staff was just a delight so friendly and no pressure to help me find what I needed and the selection here is great much more than other places that I've visited and it looked great too woohoo! Getting this pair I'm told that it has two year's warranty and if I needed any fixing or adjustments to this eye ware all I need to do is swing by and they'll take care of me with questions now what an awesome service is that!? I was in need of some new sunglasses, and being on vacay gave me the perfect excuse to buy a new pair. I also saw that some brands were offering 50% off, so I dropped by Freaky Tiki in Ala Moana mall. Its on the first level as you exit the escalator to the right, next to Big Island Cookies. Besides having an ugly face, my head has two other problems: Its wide & long. I tried on some Oakleys, but ending up liking the Costas the best. They had big lenses, and the length of the arms were long enuf to fit behind my ears. With the discount, the price was $140, which was within my budget. Regarding the ambiance, its a local store, so its a lot more comfy vs a big chain shop. When I come home, I always try to support local businesses. However, where FT really stood out was the service. The salesman, Jesse, and the owner, Ryken, showed a lot of Aloha. They patiently waited as I tried on several pairs, and Ryken said to give me a new pair vs the floor model: Big shaka to dat! Side note: To show you how small the island is, and how you are only one person removed from knowing someone else, let me share a story. I told my cuz (initials NP) that I scored some sunglasses fr FT. He told me he knows Ryken bc the latter dated his stepdaughter Jen. My cuz even showed me their prom pic. Lauryn is an absolute gem too as she has helped me and members of my family at different times purchase sunglasses for ourselves and friends. We truly appreciate their product knowledge, sense of style, and honesty. They will not hesitate telling me if the sunglasses are too small, don't fit right, or simply don't suit me. They will often select sunglasses I would have not considered. We spend most of our time on the mainland but hold off buying sunglasses until we come to Hawaii. Ryken and his team go the extra mile to ensure our customer satisfaction and they have never disappointed. They not only go the extra mile but go way overboard from what you would call excellent customer service. For example, I ordered a pair of sunglasses that were being shipped from Maui just before the tragic Lahaina fire. I had a mishap with my Maui Jim sunglasses, and one side of the lens popped out. Took it to Freaky Tiki Tropical Optical to see what can be done. Lauren helped to see if she could put the lens back in or need to send it out to Maui Jim for fixing. She tried but couldn't put the lens back in, so we decided to send it to Maui Jim factory on Maui, which was fine with me. Got an unexpected call from Lauren that evening. She stated the owner of the store, Ryken, came in, and he was able to put it back together. What a wonderful surprise, and I was so stoked that I could wear my sunglasses again. Went the next day to pick it up and was totally grateful and glad I was able to speak to owner Ryken. Earlier this week, I decided that I would make a trip to the mall and treat myself to a new pair of sunglasses in 3 years. Yes! I take care of my sunglasses! My first thought was to go to Sunglasses Hut, where I got my last two pairs. Before leaving, I decided to check Yelp to see other places selling sunglasses. I read the reviews for Freaky Tiki and remembered going there many years ago and purchasing a pair of RayBan aviators. From the current reviews, the store is now under new ownership, but still a local business, providing great service. Off I went and Jesse, who was working there that day, was friendly, helpful and above all "no pressure", which I appreciated. He made me feel comfortable trying on different styles, asking me to just return the ones I tried upside down to the shelf. I assume to clean them later. I was able to find a pair of Ray Bans that I really liked and with a 20% discount. I also appreciated that Jesse got a new pair from their stock for me. All in all, a very pleasant experience. BS WARRANTYS PILFERED HERE I purchased Maui Jim's here on 4/19/2019. Salesman Rexford Cahill told me that the Maui Jim's came with a lifetime warranty. If they broke, he said, it was on Maui Jim. I just had to make sure not to lose them! Last week the Maui Jims frame broke when I dropped my glasses. Clearly within the warranty I was sold. Well, of course, when I called just now to inquire after the warranty, I was told that the warranty only covers breaks that are the fault of Maui Jim - dropping not included. What?!? It's Maui Jim's fault that the frames were not sturdy enough for a standard drop. Love the glasses. Hate the sales tactic and advise anyone in Oahu NEVER to shop at Freaky Tiki. read more

Amazing customer service! Ryken helped me over a year ago and when I came in today he remembered my name and the sunglasses I bought. Wasn't even going to enter but was greeted warmly by a filipina, very friendly and professional and she even offered a towelette and/or hand sanitizer. COVID afted all! so I looked around and noticed a pretty big sale going on. Not just an unflattering, token 10% off type sale either! Talking substantial markdowns as if they really wanted my business. Asked questions, got good answers and info. Didn't make a purchase then and there, but came back a few days later and bought some clear lens sunglasses to use as PPE. got one heck of a deal on them by joining their email list, and the rest is history. You have to appreciate businesses that are trying harder to stay afloat during this pandemic lockdowns... my purchase may not be a game changer for them but Freaky Tiki sure made it seem that way. Long story short, our shades and all the change I use for parking got jacked from my truck couple nights ago so we decided to give this place a try and not the other place upstairs because of my last experience there. First off, the workers here are very friendly and not overshadowing your every move. "if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask" then they leave you to do your shopping. I like when it's like that. It makes me at least feel more relaxed insted of being hovered over and pressured. The wife got the same Oakley Unstoppable that she had and I got another pair of Spy Logans but they didn't have the matte finish like the one that I had. The only Logans that they had was the display one and it was the shiny one but he did give me 20% off of the display so good deal. If your on the hunt for some sunglasses I would suggest give this place a try first before you try the place upstairs that starts with a O. The perks of entering my third decade?? BIFOCALS. Congratulations to me. Luckily, thanks to my Asian genes, I still get carded or I'd just throw in the towel now. I thought if I have to be four-eyed for 12 hours a day four days a week, I might as well look damn good doing it. The hunt was on for my perfect pair of glasses. It took me weeks. Those Asian genes came back to bite me in the ass when having no nose bridge made it hell to find a pair I loved. I looked high and low at my eye doc's office, creepily checked out other people wearing glasses, peered at catalog after catalog. Until of course, I landed on the perfect frames that were no short of $600 Tom Fords. Ugh. A few Ebay searches later, and I found the same ones for $200. And I patted myself on the back for my own persistence because my line-less bifocals (so I didn't look like a complete grandma) were an additional $200. WTF MATE!? Anyways, fast forward TWO MONTHS, and these damned bifocals, were the talk of work. Seriously. All my clients could not stop talking about my "sexy" glasses. Who knew?? I guess I get the hot-for-teacher/nerd/insert-smart-lady-noun-here thing but this was another level. Multiple compliments a day people. If i forgot them at home, people asked me where my glasses were. Nobody noticed my fresh kicks anymore! But then, on a sad, sad day, one of the nose pads fell off. Turns out, these are SUPER RARE TOM FORD NOSE PADS THAT NONE ONE HAS. And no generic nose pads fit. *Rolls eyes* More money to shell out for these stupid bifocals. I retrace all my steps to all the stores/optometrists, make a thousand phone call messages to Tom Ford themselves multiple times with no response... and guess what? NO ONE HELPS ME. Until I get to FREAKY TIKI. Yep, these people are freaks of customer service nature. Ask for Z. He'll hook you up. I lamented my holy grail of nose pad searches. I made a super sad face. Told him all about my bifocal issues. I wasn't even his customer. I didn't buy anything from him. But he offered to help me when no one else did. He offered me some generics that I could cut to fit in the mean time of him trying to find these unicorn pads. I was a blind damsel in distress. He was my optical knight in a Freaky Tiki tshirt. And the man delivered! He kept emailing me updates. And when the day came that they were in, he emailed me, fit them for me, and gave them to me. Who does that nowadays?? Z is my prescription eyeglasses hero! Long story short: If you are visually challenged, do not waste your time going to other chain eyewear stores. You may just go to your doc just to get your prescription. But then HEAD STRAIGHT HERE. From the moment we stepped into his store, Ryken treated us as if we were literal royalty. Freaky Tiki also has an incredible selection. He has all your favorite brands in stock -- Maui Jim, Oakley, Costa, Ray Ban, Tiffany, Persol just to name a few -- and none of the brands you don't really care about. Also, because he doesn't keep all the junk brands, he has a very deep selection of the brands you DO want. For example, he has maybe 200 pairs of Maui Jim's in stock, whereas Sunglass Hut might have 50. That means you get to see more styles and combinations of lenses than you otherwise would -- so you will definitely find a style that looks great on you. And, when you're trying to settle on a pair -- if you ask -- Ryken will give you honest feedback about how they look and will make recommendations as to models that might be a better look. I'm telling you, he's unbelievable. Also, the prices are very reasonable. The MJ Tailslides I got from him were cheaper than at Sunglass Hut.
