    Trying wine

This is my weekly treat: attend the wine tastings and then explore the store. There is a weekly tasting with typically 3-4 wines. The individuals who curate the session present as authoritative on the grands represented, though it does not take much to impress me on this issue. It is a well designed store with decent selection. I recommend visiting here wholeheartedly and enjoy the Friday tastings!!

It's a lovely store, and the fellow who waited on me was knowledgeable, engaging, and unafraid to admit little knowledge re specific labels.

It's not near me, but I specifically made the drive out here to attend a wine class. I typically go to the ones in Pasadena or Glendale because they are closer to home but wine expert Freddy Troya teaches the classes here now, so it was worth the drive. Freddy is so knowledgeable when it comes to wine. I lean so much and his enthusiasm is contagious! His classes are always entertaining, educational, and I always end up buying a bottle of something new. I also did some shopping after the class because I needed to replenish my stock. The layout of the store makes it easy to find what you are looking for, and if you can't the associates are eager to assist. They have a vast selection of wine, beer, & spirits in addition to cigars and other essentials. The staff here are all friendly and welcoming. *Underground parking lot located on Pico.

I normally go to Monsieur Marcel to get cheese and you just wait in a line there, so that was unusual. I also feel like this should be disclosed on like a big sign or something up front otherwise you waste all this time and no one tells you how the system actually works... It's not like the ticket machine sticks out when you first walk in either... Anyway, in that timeframe i ordered a sandwich. By the time i was done eating the sandwich, the same two people were still being helped and the line didn't move. I really came to the place just to try the tobacco flavored cheese out of curiosity and just bought a sandwich to try it. The sandwich was okay. There was a good amount of meat but nothing tasted special about it. It was the second sandwich from the top on the menu. I can't pronounce it or remember the name. I could probably make a better one. And Lorenzo a few blocks away makes a much better one too. The service is fine here. The ambiance is kinda cramped because the space is small and a lot of people go there. I'll probably come back to try the cheese I wanted to try on like a random Tuesday or something, but I'm not sure I want to switch cheese stores to one where you gotta probably wait 30 minutes or more to talk to someone. It was a Friday though so there's that too. ‍

I called around 4 PM to place a cookie order and spoke with Ashley. I was immediately told that all cookie orders require 48-hour notice--without being asked how many cookies I needed or any details about the order. I even clarified that I was only looking for one dozen original cookies and one dozen milk chocolate, and she reiterated that all cookie orders require 48-hour notice. What was most frustrating wasn't even the policy--it was the lack of basic customer service. There were no follow-up questions, no attempt to offer alternatives, and no effort to see if anything could be accommodated for the next day. The conversation felt very one-sided and dismissive. I've ordered from other Bristol Farms locations throughout Southern California and have not encountered such a rigid, across-the-board policy, which made this experience even more surprising. I ended up placing the order elsewhere, and my group was very happy with that decision for several reasons, including the overall service experience. At a minimum, I would expect staff to: * Ask a few clarifying questions before declining a request * Offer alternatives or solutions when possible * Communicate policies in a more customer-friendly way Unfortunately, this isn't the first time I've experienced slow or inconsistent service at this particular counter, which makes it harder to rely on. I would also be interested to understand what measures are in place to ensure team members are trained and supported to deliver a customer-focused experience that helps grow the business, rather than turning away reasonable requests.

Liquor stores remind me of desperation and (alcoholic) characters who want to remain unseen especially after hours since grocery stores and specialty stores like Wally's or Robert Burns carry decent inventory for the average drinker. This one is no different. Fernet Branca seems to be all the rage here in the states recently and we were looking for a bottle nearby without going all the way to BevMo. The Korean girl behind the counter looked like she was 15. She had never heard of Fernet Branca and asked her dad (whom I assume is Dave) to check. He confirmed that they didn't carry it. We walked out because we didn't need/want anything else. That was the end of the story. Flashback three years ago, I was looking for Macallan (any year besides 12) for a last-minute gift but they didn't carry any Macallan at all. They had Johnnie Walker but I can't recall from this recent visit if they still do. They have low-grade stuff like Popov, Jim Beam, Skyy, etc - all liquor is behind the counter, ample amount of beer and soft drinks, stacks of wine in the back, ciggies and candy up front, and surprisingly a lot of rubbish instant foods and odd sundries. Completely meeting my expectations for an average American liquor store. I'm just glad I didn't witness any crime during my visit. Bottom line: don't expect much here.
