My youngest child and I visited for a little impromptu dinner date. Everyone else in our party went to In-N-Out, which is in the same shopping center, but my little foodie wanted sushi. So, Hooked on Sushi it was! It turned out that Hooked on Sushi is a nice fast-casual sushi joint. Actually, you're brought menus to your table and order with a server, and your food is brought to you, so does this count as fast-casual? But this place is fast and casual, so maybe? Semantics, semantics. One of the things that stands out about this restaurant is that they have a good kids menu. There are several choices for kids, and my kid got the Kids Sushi Platter, which came with a 4-piece California Roll, 2-piece tamago (egg) nigiri, and 2-piece avocado nigiri. The Kids Sushi Platter was so beautifully prepared that it looked like an art piece. We also got the Bruce Lee roll (tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, avocado, eel sauce) and an order of the pork egg rolls. Everything was tasty and fresh, and it came out to our table relatively quickly. My child and I really enjoyed our meal. The restaurant itself is very clean and bright, with lots of different seating options. This was a back up plan for my friend and my's original dinner plans, and it was worth coming to. Service was easy to see where to go orders went vs people who were looking to dine in. There was more than enough seating in the restaurant and it was moderately busy for a chilly Friday night. We were seated quickly and ordered pretty soon after. From order to food arrival, it was pretty fast for ordering 4 rolls. Each roll was packed with filling and balanced between rice to fish. Flavor was pretty good, I think the roll I ordered that had ponzu could have used a little more, but I also could have asked for more ponzu to go with it. This is absolutely my own personal preference though. The fish was fresh, nothing smelled or tasted fishy. I've been to a few Hooked on Sushi spots, and this location stands out as my favorite. The quality of the fish is always fresh, the portions are generous, and the service is efficient even when it's busy. The menu has a solid mix of traditional rolls and creative house specialties, plenty of options, so many!. They have a lot of vegetarian options too, more than most. I especially appreciate how well-balanced the flavors are. The tempura is light and crispy, and the sashimi cuts are great in appearance, smell, and texture. We enjoy the following specialty rolls: Bob Marley, Hawaiian, Waikiki, Lemon, Maui, and Crunchy. They are fresh and full of flavor. It's a great chance to order multiple and try them all. The Jalapeño Poppers and Edamame are always good appetizers. This location tends to be more consistent than the others I've tried. The atmosphere is casual but clean, and the staff is friendly without being overbearing. Parking is usually easy, which is a plus. Hooked on Sushi is a solid sushi spot. read more

We ordered sumo roll and seaweed salad on DoorDash. We were disappointed in the portion of seaweed salad. It was $9.60 for 2 tablespoons!! The sumo roll was filling. The avocado was fresh and the salmon and tuna were okay. They also didn't pack our pickup bag well. When we opened the bag, there was seaweed sauce everywhere, soaking our napkin and chopstick wrap. Lowkey guys... I wouldn't come here again because the fish here is pretty low quality, and there are other places in San Marcos that have better fish and fish to rice ratios for the same price. Folks were nice and the vibes were nothing too crazy, but the food here really had me feeling like fish were swimming in my stomach at night... One of the tuna pieces in the picture was so tough that I couldn't chew through it. It was really not great. Also the hand rolls were like 90% rice and seaweed and the rest was small traces of fish. We always order chirashi bowls, and this time it came so lame. It was $24 and the sashimi was as thin as paper, there were no greens or anything on it. We were really disappointed during our recent visit. My daughter and I came in for lunch and were immediately overwhelmed by an unpleasant odor inside the restaurant. We hoped it might go away after a few minutes, but it didn't, so we stepped back outside. Since we remembered enjoying the food on a visit about a year ago, we decided to give it another shot and place a to-go order. Unfortunately, the smell lingered in our minds and made us question the overall cleanliness and food quality. Still, we ordered. The server took my number and said we'd get a text when the order was ready, so we waited outside. After 15 minutes, we hadn't heard anything, so we went back in to check. The server's attitude was surprisingly rude, acting like we should have known exactly when to come in. Between the bad smell, the off-putting service, and the uneasy feeling overall, we couldn't even finish our food. I genuinely regret spending $60--and especially regret leaving a tip. 1 Star - Disappointing and Uncomfortable Experience at Hooked on Sushi** My husband and I stopped by Hooked on Sushi on San Marcos Blvd for dinner after our workout, hoping for a warm, cozy meal--especially since it was pouring rain outside. Unfortunately, it was anything but pleasant. When we walked in, the back door was wide open, letting in a flood of cold, damp air. We were the only people in the restaurant, which should've been a red flag. I politely asked the woman at the counter if we could close the door since it was freezing inside. She snapped at me--yes, snapped--that they couldn't because of "ventilation." I was baffled. There are huge vents overhead, so I asked our server if those were broken since the place felt like a refrigerator. She explained they *have* to keep the door open because past customers complained about a smell. If your ventilation is that bad, maybe it's time to fix it instead of punishing your current customers with an arctic dining room. We didn't even make it to our drinks. The cold was unbearable, and we had to leave before our order arrived. To top it off, the woman up front started shooting me dirty looks as we grabbed our things--like I was the problem for not wanting to shiver through my sushi. It was unprofessional, unwelcoming, and honestly just uncomfortable. We went next door to the pizza place instead, where they were warm and friendly--a complete night-and-day difference. We won't be back to Hooked on Sushi. If you're looking for a warm meal and decent service, skip this place. read more

First and foremost, this is Hooked on Sushi, so you can't really go wrong by coming here. Second, this place seems to be either more of a lunch spot or a to-go place considering the size and layout. They do have sit-down table service, but there's also a counter to order from and racks to store phone-in orders for people to grab quick. Either way, it's good and enjoyable. Already grabbed stuff from here a couple of times, but this last visit was for my son's 10th for a quick birthday lunch. We each got a lunch combo, thinking it may be a nice and small meal, but were both impressed by getting a good salad, hot miso soup, and two full rolls apiece. Filling, delicious, and a pretty good deal on top of it all. My own rolls consisted of a Scallop Hand Roll (the scallops cool and plump, popping nicely when bitten into) and a Crunchy Calamari Roll (nicely fried, not too oily, and a great, chewy texture to the calamari). I don't think I've ever gotten anything that was disappointing or worse in comparison to any other Hooked On we've been to in Encinitas or Carlsbad. And since moving to San Marcos, it was great to see another branch of this franchise move closer to our new home. With other sushi restaurants nearby not quite living up to our expectations (Tabu and Hyuga coming to mind) it's great to have something reliably tasty for an easy to accept price nearby. When looking for something quick that we know will satisfy, I can easily see us coming back here again and again. read more

Meh... I came in for lunch today. Nothing was terrible, but nothing was great either. I ordered the combination platter with 3 choices. I had Chicken Teriyaki, a crunch roll, and Vegetable Tempura. The waitress must have misunderstood me because I got the "mixed tempura with shrimp" for $1.00 more on my plate instead. I don't like shrimp as a general rule, but I didn't want to make a fuss. So I just gave them to my daughter, who loves shrimp (and paid the extra damned dollar). The teriyaki was overly sweet. The tempura dipping sauce was also cloyingly sweet (it should be a savory combination of soy sauce and kombu dashi), And the crunch roll was not crunchy. The tempura was not crunchy either. As I said, everything was just meh... mediocre food, mediocre service. I won't be returning. Was looking for a place to go for Friday night with the kiddos and decided to try somewhere new rather than the tried and true since they had a decent kids menu and it was close to home. When we arrived there was only one other table, which maybe should've been our clue. Two teenagers at the front cared little about our arrival, telling us to seat ourselves and never bringing the high chair we requested. Our server was nice and probably the only saving grace. While the rolls weren't bad priced, none of them were good. I didn't enjoy a single of the 5 we ordered, nor the garlic edamame. They put soy mustard on a bunch of rolls and it overpowers everything, and not in a good way. The pieces were also cut way too big to enjoy. I would also suggest ordering apps and kids before you put in sushi because our rolls came long before the apps or kids food. The bathroom also smelled like straight sewage and almost made me barf on entry. Moral of the story: they have a decent kids menu with not just bento boxes that are too much food for toddlers. And while they may not have been bad priced, I would have rather gone to the places we know we enjoy. We ultimately spent about the same but didn't enjoy anything. They also have a rewards program, which is nice but we won't be back. read more

This was my first time here since it became a sushi place. My bf and I ordered 2 lunch specials thinking they would be small so we would be hungry later for our reservation at 5:15pm somewhere else. We were so wrong. 2 sushi rolls and a bento box plus cold sake = more than stuff and that's without eating everything. The menu is limited in the sense you're not going to find all the seafood. I love salmon and eel and these were not stand alone in the rolls. I found it surprising but this must make it easier for the business. They also had soup which I'm down to try. The girl who took our order was very nice and the food came out in a decent time. I thought the food was good and my lack of paying attention/reading made me surprised when the bento box came with tempura. How thrilled I was! Food while you charge your EV car in San Marcos. We got Poke Bowl for $15 x 2 to-go and had a parking lot dinner date while charging our car for less than $50. The poke bowl is above average with decent amount of ahi (taste fresh) and spicy crab meat combined with seaweed, avocado and massage among others. I would recommend this place but as mentioned in my other review for Sushi Diner, I would recommend the create your own Poke Bowl of Sushi Diner for less than $15 even more. Hooked on sushi, didn't work for me! HoS is a fast-casual sushi restaurant that has taken over the old Noodles and Company location in San Marcos. You order at the counter and they deliver it to your table. Right off the bat, this is a good place for families. This is NOT the place for special events, dates, or a night out with friends. Taking the kids to a crowded, cramped sushi bar isn't a good idea so this place makes sense. What doesn't make sense is the high cost for marginally better sushi than places like Sushia. That's the rub, it's not a memorable atmosphere and it's not memorable sushi. The check will reflect otherwise. That's why it's difficult to recommend.. If you're from neighboring San Elijo maybe the price doesn't matter and you love the casual environment. For the rest of us, probably not. * "F" for their 14.50 chicken yakisoba. Every other sushi restaurant is far more generous in portion and quality. Mikko Sushi really put this place's yakisoba to shame. Amazing food just like the Carlsbad location! We've been going to the Carlsbad one for a while and were very excited to know they have one now in San Marcos! They took over the old Noodles and Co. spot and kept the same layout. So you have to order at the front instead of having full waiting services. The tastes remain the same though! Their rolls are so good and fresh. Can't go wrong with any, really. We had their lemon roll and hooked on sushi roll. Both were fresh, but I think they're a bit too citrusy for me. Their baked langoustine roll was delicious. And make sure you get their agedashi tofu! One of the best. Crispy with just a thin layer of batter around soft silky tofu. The sauce was good too.
