We wanted some sushi but the place we wanted is all the way on Nordahl which takes 20-25 minutes during rush hour to get to. Saw Love Boat Sushi, it was closer, decided to order take out. We some combos, I got a sashimi and nigiri combo, my husband got a nigiri and rainbow row, and California roll on the side. They don't have chirashi bowls, so that was a bummer. The sushi wasn't bad. No fishy taste and pretty fresh. It was a random Wednesday. Definitely pricey for not a lot of food though. Wish they add a chirashi bowl, but wouldn't mind ordering from here again. read more

I stopped here with husband for dinner and was not disappointed, everything we ordered was delicious. The pricing wasn't cheap but it was fair for the freshness and portions we received. I think the sashimi and sushi combo dinner was my favorite item in the meal though the udons was also very tasty. The staff were friendly and helpful though I did have to ask twice for a water refill (I think they just got busy at one point). The first thing we noticed was how good the server and host were, very attentive and friendly. The waitress was nice, knowledgeable about the menu, and helped us figure out our order. We came here on a Monday afternoon and the place was quite empty. We got seated immediately. We ordered the takoyaki, Spicy salmon cut roll, El diablo crunch roll, and the Mango mango roll. The moment we sat, we were asked what we wanted to order when we hadn't even had a chance to look at the menu yet. We weren't given any bowls for the soy sauce and wasabi. Through the meal, there seemed to be two servers who managed all the tables but didn't talk to each other to see if they had already taken care of the table. We gave our order to one server and 1-2 minutes later, the second server came by asking if we wanted anything more. So service seemed a little off. Onto the food: the takoyaki was ok. I don't it was made in the traditional way because the balls were very uniformly round. We also didn't find a piece of octopus inside so we imagine that they used an octopus meat paste or something. The yogurt based sauce with it was delicious, especially the seasoning powder on it, and we enjoyed that a lot! Among the rolls, the spicy salmon roll was a good solid roll - decent size, made to be compact and tasty. The Mango mango roll was just ok. It mentioned avocado, wasabi and siracha but the mango overwhelmed everything and it was quite sweet. The El Diablo roll was good but too big! It was NOT spicy even though it is supposed to be one. The tempura shrimp was nice but a little lost in all the flavor. We ranked the rolls as spicy salmon then El Diablo then Mango mango. The wasabi was not fresh but had a kick to it. The ginger didn't have much heat. All in all, this is a decent place but nothing to rave about. Ambiance is quaint modern. Lots of parking since this in the outdoor mall area. Parking in front of the restaurant is on 30 mins so you might have to park a bit away and walk. read more

I thought to myself it's about time I wrote a review since I've been on board this boat a couple of times. Based on my foodie adventures, I have mixed feelings about Love Boat. It was pretty good the first few times I tried it a few years ago, but over time it changed. I recently decided to give it a try. Inside Love Boat there's a laid-back atmosphere so I choose indoor seating. I was annoyed by the gnats or fruit flies...whatever...flying around. I wondered why my Crunch Salmon rolls were thicker than I expected. It looks like someone had a boat load of fun with the crunchies...hardly see the rolls. Isn't the presentation a big deal?! I went here with my boyfriend and really enjoyed it! We split 3 rolls: Yellowtail mania, Mango mango, and the deep fried Geisha roll. The Geisha roll (which I forgot to take a pic of since it came out later) in particular was huge since it has a popcorn crunch layer on the outside, which was legitimately crunchy and was probably one of the more unique rolls I've tried in a while! If you like crunch and deep fried rolls, I would try it. They were all a decent size, everything came out in a reasonable amount of time, and the service was friendly. Been coming here for several years and I'm happy to report that the food and service has been maintained. We ordered the Bento Box with sashimi and the mixed tempura, I did double salad (no extra charge) and wife went with the white rice. The sashimi was two pieces of tuna and two pieces of salmon...both were creamy/buttery and simple delicious. The mixed tempura came with two shrimp, regular and sweet potatoes and carrot. The batter was light, crispy and not greasy. These boxes also came with miso soup...freshly made. Everything was tasty and came very quickly. Our server Gabby was super sweet, attentive and nailed our order and paid attention to our special request and brought our green tea at the end of our meal as requested. I did a walk in to go order 920pm Friday night. Ordered the dinner combo. One with teriyaki salmon and sashimi and the other beef with salmon skin sushi I waited for over 25 minutes. Their waiting area bench is right in front of the entrance They had the door opened and it was freezing cold. Probably 59 degrees inside thank goodness I was taking it to go During the first 5 minutes of my wait I noticed the waitress place the two miso soups on the to go prep counter next to the opened door . It sat there getting cold till the rest of the order came out 20 min later . Not a big deal as I could reheat. When I got home the sushi did not have any wasabi or ginger on the side. Big disappointment. The salmon skin sushi rolls was piled in the container in a huge conglomerate stuck together pile. Couldn't even eat the roll by piece. It's was all stuck together and impossible to distinguish that there were any cut pieces of a roll. A big sloppy mess. I should have taken a pic. The steak was tough and chewy The salmon portion was tiny. Maybe 3 oz Most of it cut near the end /tail so it had a good amount of inedible gray meat. The salad was great. Crisp fresh. Well it's a year later and god help you if you order takeout and don't specifically ask for wasabi - they do not include it in ANY takeout orders, but if you eat at the restaurant, it's one of the first things they give you for free. There is even a little spot for the wasabi in their lunch bento. Even if you call ahead and ask them to please remember to add it, they forget about 75% of the time. That said, it's been in San Marcos for ages and the food is totally fine, slightly above average, and the cost is fair. They do particularly good chicken teriyaki and excellent tempura, good miso, but I'm a sushi guy and when you get home and there's still no wasabi after you've asked for it, it's very annoying. I have now decided to always have a tube of my own at home but it's the principle. Umai sushi on Nordahl is way better quality for sushi, but unfortunately it's a bit more out of the way from me, so I eat at Love Boat somewhat frequently and it hits the spot. The lunch specials are really cost-efficient especially for sushi and the star, while having massive turnaround throughout the years (we've probably seen over 100 employees come and go) are always friendly, if not a little lost-seeming. Everyone feels like they are new, because they probably are. Bathroom is clean, tables are nice, booths are better... it's a San Marcos staple. Would be sad to see it go... hope they sort out their wasabi situation someday. read more

I had the surf and turf and I'm not sure if it's the juices from the beef but it also tasted mushy and not balanced. The Spider was probably the best but it tasted very bland. We're sushi lovers and have ate everywhere from Hawaii, Japan, East and West Coast. This wasn't it. The sushi rice is supposed to hold its shape and texture and not "mush" by a slight touch. I think the price per roll reflects that. I'm ok with their price per roll. But the upcharge of $6 for less than 1 tablespoon of masago to be added on top of the roll is ridiculous. More than a third of the cost of the roll. (The masago would have likely measured out to 2 teaspoons, tops). After a conversation with the manager, the added masago was reduced to $1 per roll. Thank you. Service was just all around poor. Sadly, this will be my last visit to Love Boat. There are others sushi restaurants that serve quality items. read more

When people walk in, there is an old oily smell. One time I found a live cockroach crawling in the women's bathroom. I ordered via Yelp and picked it up as they don't deliver. Our order was ready when we arrived. Ordered... Yellowtail jalapeño roll PGA roll Chicken teriyaki I had requested and paid for extra eel sauce but it wasn't in the bag. Both sushi rolls were very fresh and tasty. The chicken was a bit dry with very little teriyaki sauce drizzled over part of the order only (came with rice, miso soup, and salad).
