This is my favorite spot in North County to get sushi! The ambiance is relaxing and feels like you are in Japan with all the various memorabilia. The sushi chef is always friendly and greets everyone as they walk in. The service can be slow at times, but mainly when it is busy. I love getting the El Fuego Roll and El Diablo Roll! They have so much flavor and are spicy. The nigiri is also really good. My favorite is the salmon nigiri. It is always fresh and fatty. I recommend their mixed tempura and fried gyoza for the appetizers. I also love their lunch or dinner combos where you can get bento box specials with beef, chicken, or salmon teriyaki. There are so many good dishes here and I love their sushi! The friendliness, decor, and fresh sushi are what make this place a hidden gem in San Marcos! I will be back soon! read more

We celebrated my son's bday on sat June 1 and had a wonderful dinner. The ambiance is welcoming and full of interesting anime posters and figurines. There's old Hollywood classic movie posters scattered on the walls and a great playlist of rock , jazz playing in the background. It reminds me of a local hole in the wall Japanese food cafe We had excellent service and our dishes were fresh and enjoyed by all of us. I ordered the salmon and tempera bento box. Kids ordered soba noodles and the Saba fish plate. We also ordered the sushi assortment plate and two specialty rolls. Miso soup was served with the dinner entrees and was delicious. I opted for the salted salmon instead of teriyaki on my bento box and it was delicious. The tempura was generous. Two shrimps and an assortment of root veggies. I prefer a lighter crispier batter fry but still was good. The sushi was fresh and rolled with a good balance ratio of rice & goodies , cut in to several one -bite size potions. Making it easy to eat and savor Many sushi places cut the rolls into chunky large sizes and it's difficult to eat with one fell swoop of your chop sticks. As a Yelper, so many times when going out, you end up judging a restaurant on a small selection of their menu. Sure, you may not like their Braunschweiger, Horseradish Cheddar, and Pickled Onion Bagel Sandwich, but you would have loved the Roast Beef and Pastrami on Toasted Honey Wheat if you'd tried it; and now you've robbed the shop of a good review simply because of your choice. Sushi bars dance on that line, with so many choices of rolls and nigiri, offering the option of trying so much in one sitting, but you can leave something amazing off your plate because of your choices. Regardless, when coming here on a date night with my wife, we ordered a good spread and touched on most of our typical favorites. And still, we came away disappointed. First off, the decor is fantastic. Hyuga Sushi has a great dive bar atmosphere that I really love when eating at a hole-in-wall spot. With anime posters and figurines behind cases, it really is a comfortable go-to place to eat at. We started with the Edamame, a simple pleasure anywhere you eat. Next up were the California Roll and Philadelphia Roll. Both were made well, packed tight with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. But, the California was made with a crab stick instead of the usual surimi salad, making it very dry, without much flavor, and not that good. Honestly, even seeing them come out with a stick is always eyebrow raising for me as you know the roll will lack sweetness and essentially just have the faint, metallic taste of that fake meat. The Squid Nigiri was better, great chew and texture with a good swipe of wasabi for flavoring. However, the Salmon Nigiri tasted foul, as if the fish was a day or so passed freshness. Thankfully, neither of us got sick from it; though I can't remember if the chef took it off the check after we mentioned it. After that was the Hyuga Special Roll which led to a theme that seemed to run through the night. With yellowtail and lime juice it's very similar to a terrible roll we had at Sushi4Reel. There it was sour, overly flakey, and unappealing. Here, it was sour, lightly crunchy instead of flakey, and just about average; a decidedly marked improvement of flavor and technique. Not our best choice, but still fairly well done. Next was the Del Mar Roll, something I wanted for the chew from the octopus inside. What hit the table had a flavor and smell not entirely unlike cat food. Like the Hyuga before, it was very similar to a terrible dish we had elsewhere that gave us the same thoughts of lukewarm, feline cuisine. Still, here it almost entirely edible, giving us our nightly theme of terrible food done a little bit better here. Last we had the Hawaiian Roll, which I honestly don't remember how it was, but it certainly sounds good on paper. In the end, an ultimately disappointing night out highlighted only by having those similar dishes we hated elsewhere being kinda alright here. If it wasn't for the rough start with the California Roll and Salmon, it could almost be a low 3-star review for me. But, the lows coupled with the high price tag at the end pushed it down to a middle 2-star review for me. read more

Got recommended to try out this place, which I will admit that I felt skeptical because their operating hours were a bit weird. But I decided to try it out on a Saturday evening. The place is a little small but there were still enough seats around and we sat at the bar. We ordered three nigiri (maguro, tamago, and Kura), two special rolls (Special Albacore Roll and Las Vegas Roll), and a regular sushi roll (spicy tuna roll). I will say I was actually quite impressed with the taste of them! This definitely is one of those authentic Japanese sushi restaurants as their rolls are smaller, which I actually prefer! And they actually add wasabi in their nigiri, which many sushi restaurants do not do. And the chef and everyone is Japanese! If you actually want some authentic Japanese food, I highly recommend giving this place a try! Make sure to check their operating hours before coming since they don't open all day. I moved away for a while, but I still like to come here. I love the fact that this is a truly authentic restaurant. The chef has been serving his food and cultivating his atmosphere, and it shows. I love the simplicity and uniqueness of this restaurant, even 8 years later. I saw the recent negative reviews, and I feel some yelpers are becoming divas. This isn't a Michelin-starred restaurant. There are very few of those in the world. I'm not Gordon Ramsay with extensive nonsense critical ability and training to back up my audacity. I'm just a regular guy who likes simple yet good food. STOKED!!! I have been searching for a place like Hyuga for such a long time! Follow...Finding a Japanese owned and operated Sushi-Ya in North San Diego is like trying to find toilet paper or rice on amazon.com during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are truly a scarcity! Granted, you do have LOTS of non Japanese "sushi" places up here, you know, the kind that put tons of sauce on their rolls and pronounce Sake as "Sa-Kee" but being 1/2 Japanese American and coming from a fishing family has made me a bit of a raw fish snob. Sure Kaito in Encinitas and Shimbashi in Del Mar are excellent but they're also farther from my house. So when I saw Rebecca T.'s Yelp review of Hyuga and that they have awesome lunch specials well, I just had to try it! They are located in a strip mall across from the Jiffy Lube in San Marcos. I've seriously driven past Hyuga hundreds of times and never knew they were here! I'm also a major germaphobe so getting safe, reliable, and tasty takeout is of the utmost importance to me! Via Yelp I looked at their website and called in my order. The Chef gave me a precise pick up time and I was delighted to see that my order was ready when quoted and each and every single food item was carefully and meticulously packaged in plastic containers and bags!!! He was so nice and attentive and the entire transaction was touchless and sanitary!!! I ordered their Sushi Variety Lunch and their Steak Lunch Combo. The fish was sliced perfectly and the sushi rice was spot ON!!! I LOVED the Hirame sashimi and the yellowtail!!! All in all it was one of the BEST nigiri that I've found within 15 minutes of my house!!! Although it rarely comes to anyone's mind to order sushi takeout during a pandemic, don't forget Kuro-san's kitchen makes very nice bento boxes and combo lunches too and they're such a bargain! We wanted to support them because we love this place, so one lunch time we decided to order food there. I got their katsu with tempura combo and my hubby got his favorite sesame chicken lunch special. Oh wow, they packed our food soooo nicely in many separate containers! (We felt bad for all the plastic being used...) for my combo, one box was the katsu and rice, the other for tempura, another for California rolls, another one for salad and a bowl for miso soup....! Husband's special also came with 4 containers. When he came home, he had two giant bags of food even though we only ordered two lunch combos haha! My friend and I ordered the teriyaki chicken and salmon bento boxes. They came with a really nice green salad with a thousand island like dressing and a really tasty miso soup. What's great is that the bento boxes were a great size and a great price- about $14 each. The teriyaki sauce on the chicken and salmon was really thick and flavorful too. The waitress was not around that often, but we understood. It's a really small restaurant with limited staff. When we dined in, there looked to be only two chefs and one waitress. Hyuga is an intimate place with a confusing array of décor that doesn't really present a theme. This could be said of their food as well. Not bad, but nothing that stands out; except for the prices. During the lunch hour, we had two rolls which coast $32. They had a couple of rolls on special, but nothing that really appealed. As a couple of others have mentioned, the rolls themselves were served at or warmer than room temperature. The look and the taste of the fish on top of the rainbow roll seemed a little off. Once served, we did have to get up to ask for a couple of things, such as a fork and some hot sauce. We were served by an older Asian lady, who seemed sincere, but was multi-tasking with the books a bit too much. Overall, just ok for us. Great to try out a new place for us, but in all honesty we probably won't be back. read more

Can't believe I've never been here before - it's the kind of sushi place I've come to love, a hole-in-the-wall, genuine Japanese small business with a few tables, awesome anime and other Japanese pop culture decor all over the walls, a varied menu, and delicious sushi! I was a bit surprised that only one other table was occupied when we arrived on Saturday just after 6pm, although it was nice to feel attended to because the server didn't have many other tables competing for her attention! I was happy to see a couple other tables come and go while we were there. Our party of four ordered steamed gyoza, chicken teriyaki dinner box (comes with miso soup, salad, and a California roll), the Spanish roll, the dragon roll, the rainbow roll, the halibut roll, and a while bunch of Japanese beer and both hot and cold sake. Thanks to Hyuga, I crossed off a food item off my culinary bucket list. Here's what we ordered. *means that I would order this again. *Salmon belly nigiri- not only is the salmon belly fresh and melts in your mouth. The rice is the star. Just the perfect amount of vinegar and moistness, plus hint of wasabi. Delicious. Honeymoon special (my culinary bucket list food item). Raw oyster,topped with uni, quail egg yolk and masago. It's like a combo of some of my favorite ingredients. I've always been so curious as to what this would taste like. Sunrise special- salmon wrapped around snow crab with raw quail egg on top. Interesting texture. I realized I love quail eggs cooked not necessarily raw. It was good but I only wanted to try, I probably won't re-order. *Amebi nigiri - prepared so elegantly. Raw nigiri but deep fried head. Bomb! I would order this again! *Scallop nigiri - I love scallop. They prepare this with a creamy mayo based sauce and top it with black masago. The contrasting texture and slight saltiness of the masago paired with the creamy scallop go well together. Overall experience 5/5 for food variety, quality and service. Loved the lime flavor! -Dragon Roll ($10.50): I haven't had eel in a while, and now I know why. The texture was just too chewy for me. Deferring eel in my next sushi meal. Got a free dessert - mochi with fried bananas. It was pretty delish. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the mochi is from TJ's (Trader Joe's). Overall, the service was good. This is an intimate and welcoming restaurant that feels like a mix of Japanese and American culture! I've gone more than once, and the waitress even remembered my order :). The food is always fulfilling and I personally always have room for leftovers. Most of the dishes come with miso soup and an salad that has this dope peanut dressing sauce and miso soup! Actual raw fish ranges from 4 to 5 star quality. Sushi rice would rate 3-4 stars but I'm very critical on this subject. The hot food is quite good with excellent tempura and a unique take on Karaage. Service is always excellent. The place is a bit of a hole in the wall, so don't expect great ambiance and there's a worn out look to it all.
