I recently stopped by Hoolie's Grill, formerly known as Hooligan's, and I have to admit -- I'm not quite sure where the "Hooligan's" ran off to, but the menu sure didn't go with it. It's been a good while since my last visit, back when they were holding court on University Boulevard. In those days, this was a dependable lunch stop -- good, tasty, and worth the drive. Today? Well... bless its heart. I ordered the turkey club wrap with cheese fries. The wrap was fine -- not bad, not memorable -- just kind of sitting there in the middle of the road like it didn't want to pick a lane. Now the cheese fries... that cheese sauce deserves its own investigation. I'm not sure where it originated, but based on the color alone, somebody might want to trace its family tree. It wasn't offensive, just puzzling -- the kind of neon hue that makes you squint a little and ask questions you weren't planning to ask. My wife went with the cheeseburger and fries. Let's just say if Wendy's was filming the old Where's the Beef? commercial again, this burger might have earned a casting call. It was modest. Petite. Economical with its beef. You get the idea. To be fair, the staff was friendly and the service was quick -- no complaints there at all. They were as pleasant as Sunday afternoon sweet tea. We decided to eat lunch here last week with 2 adults and 3 children ( that order from the adult menu) Well we never got to eat here. We walked in and there were about 3 tables full of couples eating and one man waiting on his to go food. We waited to order for about 10 minutes ( you walk up to the counter to order) without being acknowledged at all. Two men were cooking , which I understand they were busy, but they could have at least said "we'll be right with y'all" . Needless to say we ended up leaving without ordering or talking to anyone. I've eaten here several times over the years and it does seem like it has gone down hill. We stopped by for a quick lunch while in town for a game - inside wasn't too crowded when we arrived around 11:30. We ordered the chick kabob plate (no rice, extra salad) and gyro with okra. Both meals were delicious, the hummus was very fresh and I enjoyed the light pita bread they use. Highly recommend for a filling but refreshing lunch! Would give 5 stars but the lady preparing food has her hair down and not behind her shoulders. Not a good look. And the other lady is eating off of the line WITH HER GLOVES ON. She took something out of a pan on the line and stuck it into her mouth while wearing her gloves and then did not change her gloves as she touched other people's food. read more

If you're looking for Mediterranean food in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, this is one of the best stops for it. The menu is a bit more diverse than a chain like Taziki's, and the prices seem more fair too. Usually one of my favorite places to eat in Tuscaloosa, but today was just ok. I was disappointed. The burger was blah, no flavor. It at least has fresh ingredients added. The falafel was overcooked and dry. I had to ask for sauce for the falafel. They seemed disorganized. Maybe it was just a Sunday afternoon thing. I hope so because I will try again. Have eaten here many times and it has been fantastic. The lamb was very good and the sauce for it. They forgot salad dressing for the salad. Will keep trying. Everyone has an off day. On my initial visit here, the cuisine was awful. Since you can't go wrong with this meal, I decided to try a double cheeseburger and fries with cheese sauce. The hamburger bun was chilly and dry, and the hamburger meat patties were lukewarm and dry. The buns were larger than the burger patties. Fries taste as if they were a cheap brand. The cheddar sauce poured over the fries was awful.  In general, I won't return to eat there. read more

The place is clean and nice. But the food isn't all that great. Every time I've had a gyro or the plate, the meat has been skimpy and burnt. The menu isn't much different than Purple Onion in Birmingham, but the food quality is. And P.O. isnt even that great. The burgers are decent. This was the worst Greek food I've ever had. The gyro meat was like dry sticks of jerky, not cut off a spit of meat like every other gyro place on the planet. The tzatziki tasted like sour cream with pickle relish in it and it looked that way too. The pita was thin hard and dry. This place has the best burger in town! Their fries have a seasoning that can't be beat and their mint tea is perfect with any of their menu options. I recommend dipping the fries in hummus, trying the gyro baked potato, and indulging in their yummy food at least once a month. read more

The name may deter you, but it's pretty good! This is another Tuscaloosa staple, and I've grown up eating here. Name it, and they probably serve it here. It's a bizarre assortment of Greek food, American food, and breakfast(?) However, I haven't had anything bad here yet! Today I got a burger because I was craving one. They're pretty good, and it was a decent price for the burger! Be warned, the burgers come with mustard on them. I don't really like mustard, so ask for none if you're like me! I loveeee their fries. Not really sure what they season them with but it's delicious and I want more of it! My sister got the gyro potato. It looked delicious! I think the only thing that could make it better was if it came with Tzaiki (spelling is so wrong) sauce. The gyro meat is so delicious and tender!! Service is really friendly. The lady who brought our food was so kind today it put a smile on my face :) This place isn't gonna knock you away or be the best you ever eat. But it's good food, especially for Tuscaloosa. My parents love this place. I live in BHM, and this place is where I take my folks when I visit Tuscaloosa. The food here is your standard issue Mediterranean fast casual fare. It's always freshly prepared and the restaurant itself is big and clean. The staff is friendly, but given that it's located in a college town, there are few familiar faces. My dad loves the gyro sandwich (with onion rings) and my mom is a big fan of the burger. However, last night, her burger was soggy. It's wasn't a deal breaker though. I like places like this because I can bring my 15 month old son here without feeling stressed that he's being disruptive. It's a family friendly and casual atmosphere. We went there with friends last night. Their meals were okay, but I ordered the Beef Kebab Plate and was disappointed. The beef portion was small for the price and it was extremely "chewy." Plus I don't believe it was a true kebab, I think it was just sautéed on a grill like a hamburger and not cooked on a skewer. I would have sent it back but I didn't want to be negative while my companions were pleased with their meals. There are other restaurants in Tuscaloosa with similar cuisine that are much better. I'm not a big fan of the quality of the food. Although Kronos Gyros is the same anywhere, I've had tomatoes and lettuce on sandwiches that had gone bad or tasted contaminated with a chemical that wasn't washed off properly. read more
