This was a home run from start to finish. Though it was a bit of a hike from South Tuscaloosa, it was absolutely worth the drive. The wait for our party of 5 wasn't too long and we were seated in a big booth near the bar. Very nice decor, classy but comfortable. All of the servers and staff were super friendly and offered a nice selection of local brews and tasty margaritas. Several of us had the redfish special which was just outstanding! Well after seeing reviews me and wife decided on this for lunch. I'll say all the staff were great. Very friendly. But the food?????? Wife wanted a salad and potato skins so went with the wedge which came chopped so more of a chopped salad than a wedge and it was fine. Nothing spectacular. Who potato skins were reminiscent of some frozen ones you heat in the oven. Didn't seem fresh at all. The bacon wasn't that great really and the cheeses was cheese. All in all edible but not enjoyable. I went with the bacon wrapped meatloaf with mashed potatoes with gravy and a side of Mac and cheese. I'll start with the Mac. It was horrible. Sorry don't mean to be a downer but wasn't good at all. The mashed and gravy a big nope. The potatoes weren't all that good. It was like eating a plat of spackle. And the gravy was horrendous. Made bad potato's worse. The meatloaf was ok. Kind of like cafeteria meatloaf. I did eat it but wasn't thrilled. Again not a fan of that bacon so ditched that after one bite. Personally I would not go back and wife agreed. Maybe we got the wrong items but nothing was good. read more

Stopped on a Friday, spur of the moment lunch choice while visiting my son at the university. Food was fantastic, and the portions were great for the price. While dropping my stepson off at the U of Alabama, my wife and I were looking for a place for dinner away the crowd at the school. Thanks to Yelp, we found a great spot a few miles away, the Southern Ale House. We had about a half hour wait on a Saturday night which wasn't too bad. There was a shorter wait for outdoors, but with temps in the 90's, indoor was the way to go! There's an excellent drink list. I went with an IPA and my wife had a delicious cocktail made with pineapple infused rum. For entrees, my wife had the Shrimp Spinach Salad and I had the Corbell Biscuit. We loved them! I had a taste of the shrimp which was so good! When in the South, ordering biscuits is a must, and the one on my order didn't disappoint. We topped the dinner off with two amazing desserts...That Cheesecake and Bourbon Bread Pudding! Amazing! Arrived Saturday April 4 around 1:20. Folks behind us were seated before us... We asked to be seated outside and were, but waited 25 minutes and no one even acknowledged us, much less brought us water or said hello. The other two tables were taken care of by two different waiters, both of whom ignored us. There were only a few people inside so we're not sure what the problem was. I was deciding between a burger and the Meme, and she told me the Meme was amazing, so I ordered her recommendation. I believe all meals come with a choice of side and there are so many great southern options to choose from! The meme is a biscuit with fried chicken tenders, bacon, and gravy. The fried chicken was amazing! One of the best seasoned pieces of chicken I've ever had. The biscuit was pretty average and I wasn't a huge fan of the gravy but the combination of all the ingredients with the bacon was excellent. My boyfriend got the grilled chicken (comes with cheese and bacon on top) with hash brown casserole and pimento cheese as his sides. Again, the chicken is seasoned wonderfully! The hash brown casserole is pretty good and cheesy. The Mac and cheese has good flavor but isn't creamy. I'd absolutely recommend this place! You won't have to worry about bland food. The main dishes here are fantastic, the sides always leave me a little disappointed. Atmosphere is fun and always busy. The meatloaf is delicious and if you can catch the wings on a Friday they are incredible. My favorite dish is the grilled chicken breast with the white bbq sauce and grilled veggies. read more

Loved our food here and the service was amazing! Our waitress was quick to get our order in and made sure to check on us frequently. The balsamic glazed salmon was some of the best salmon I've ever had from a restaurant. And I loved that the greens came with vinegar and it was up to you if you wanted to add it or not. So stuck on whether to give this place a 3 or a 4 star...the food was overall only okay, I'd say (with one notably delicious exception), but the service and restaurant itself was nice. My real rating, though, is probably around a 3.5 Southern Ale House has a cozy, pub-ish interior. It was a little too warm inside for us, but not really enough to be unpleasant. All the tables and glasses looked clean. We were seated within the 20 minutes we were told to wait. Our waitress struck a really nice balance between conversational and efficient. She got our orders right, too, and we had a few additions/substitutions. I had the Yard Bird - a grilled chicken club, basically. It was so-so. The chicken was a little too chewy/tough and kinda low on flavor, but it wasn't dry, so at least there's that. The bacon on top was good and crispy. The sauce they put on the bun (I believe they called it Slap Your Momma Sauce) was too vinegary, and I didn't like it very much. Luckily, I ordered a side of house-made ranch, originally to dip my fries in - but pouring it on the sandwich made the whole thing much better. Really good ranch! Fries were too oily and wound up being kinda limp and soggy. My boyfriend got the fried pickle burger. They followed his order specifications and he liked it. It wasn't incredible, but it was a good burger, and the fried pickles were a fun addition. He felt the same as me about the fries. I'd read good things about the pimento mac and cheese, so we ordered a side of it to share. It was just okay. It came out room temperature, so that was unfortunate, and it didn't have a really strong flavor. Wish it had a little heat, both temperature wise and flavor wise. We liked the creamy texture, though. Last, we shared the bourbon bread pudding for dessert. THIS was the shining star of the meal; it was excellent. Tasted almost like boozy French toast, with a soft center and crispy edges. Real whipped cream on top and perfectly melty chocolate chips rounded out the experience. I'd probably only return if a dining companion really wanted to go, but it's a nice place to visit and worth a shot, if only for the bread pudding! read more

Truthfully, I've had some okay experiences here. Nothing to rave about but more recently, my experiences are work noting over the past weeks, the environment is a bit unsettling to put it best. I saw whom I believe is the manager yelling at a server, quite barbarically to be straight. This was NOT in the back of house either but more so where every other customer sitting there was trying not to stare and hug the poor soul getting yelled at. I was not only appalled but the server left the interaction with their head held high although you could tell they were distraught. Safe to say I will not be dining here again. As some one who has worked in the service industry for quite some time, treating your employees like that, especially AROUND YOUR CUSTOMERS, is not a sign of a good establishment. While I don't know the workers personally, an angry or defeated staff does not lead to increased quality. Do better. read more

We came here during parents weekend at the university based on someone's recommendation. initially we were given a wait of 1.5 hours but we decided to stay anyway because everywhere was going to have crazy waits and we were hopeful it wasnt really that long, they were really trying to get people seated checking in to see if people minded sitting a little tighter than normal so they could be seated. Lucky for us the wait scared people off so we only waited about 40 minutes. Unfortunately I did not catch out servers name, he was a young guy and he was possibly one of the best servers I have ever had. Very attentive despite the restaurant being slammed. We had appetizers also and he told us normally he doesnt. Enter dinner orders until the appetizers are halfway gone so the tables aren't loaded with all the food at once, but he knew his kitchen was backed up so he went ahead and placed ours. He kept us updated telling us how many orders ahead of us and our food came out in perfect timing. He also kept our drinks r filled and checked in the right amount of times. Now on to the food, this place was recommended to us and I can see why, we had two appetizers and four dinners and every one of them were amazing. There were also several other items that sounded delicious and I can to wait to go back and try more. The only part of our meal that didn't get 5 stars was the pimento cheese Mac and cheese, I personally didn't try it but the person that did said it wasn't that warm and it wasn't creamy which is what she prefers, but again they were slammed so I would give the Mac and cheese a try again. Everything else was amazing, most of us came home with leftovers, chicken was delicious, still juicy, and no questionable bites. Went to the Southern Ale House for date night, and I do have to say that I greatly enjoyed my meal. My partner and I split the Buffalo pimento cheese dip as an appetizer. The dip wasn't too spicy (which was good for my partner) and the house made chips were fresh and nicely seasoned. Both of us got the balsamic salmon, and I have chipotle collard greens and sweet potato tots as my sides. The collard greens were good, but not very much chipotle was tasted in them. The salmon was nicely done and the glaze was just the perfect touch. Lastly though, my favorite part of this meal was the sweet potato tots. They came out fresh and piping hot, and when bitten they melted in my mouth. Definitely will be back, if only for those again. My only complaints about this place was that the portion sizes are a bit small for the price, but other than that service was great for a busy Friday night and we left pretty satisfied with our meals. read more

My wife and I stopped for an early dinner and found only one other customer in the place. The restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. The menu was simple with a limited selection, which hopefully means they are focused on doing it right. My wife had chicken fingers as she is not adventurous at all. They looked good, but my wife said it tasted like the oil needed changing. The portion was very generous. I had the Corbell which is a ribeye on a biscuit with horseradish. It was really good other than the biscuit was overdone which made it crumble into pieces. Too bad as I think the biscuit tasted great. So only a few little misses. My biggest complaint was the service. Now with COVID, I am very patient with the overworked servers. However, our waitress was over talking with the other server and looked as if she had nothing to do. I had to flag her down for drink refills and the check. At any rate, we will go again. read more
