The bottles were mostly 12-oz singles like they just bought a bunch of 6-packs and are selling them individually. They were playing depressing-ass BBC nature documentaries and I legit watched a baby elephant DIE while I was trying to enjoy my beer. The icing on the experience cake, though, really was the blonde girl working. Hopefully someone will tell her that it's okay to smile and pretend to be friendly and act like you want to be working, even if you aren't and don't. Stopped in to watch a game and have a beer a while back and got a pleasant surprise. This is a place that really knows its beer - plus friendly staff and regulars make this a great unassuming spot to kick back after a long day. Has CBD and non alcoholic choices too, which make this a great place for the sober drivers. Games to borrow as well as pinball and darts. Beer and growlers to-go and a pub menu is available as well. Think of it as a neighborhood bar. Largest take out bottled beer selection on NE Broadway? No. There is a decent selection, but there are far more beers available up the street at the Hollywood Fred Mayer. Largest number of taps on NE Broadway? No. There is a decent showing, but there are more taps at Skyline Burgers just a few blocks up the street. So how is the food? Well, actually they don't cook food on premises, so if you want to eat they'll order pizza or burgers (from Skyline) and have 'em delivered on site. And yet somehow it all totally works. So what's the draw then, you ask? It's the people. This place is evolving into a super casual and friendly neighborhood bar. The owners and staff are amazingly cool and friendly, as are the patrons. It's the kind of place you can walk into and sit down for a beer, and in minutes feel like a 'regular'. Everyone is very engaging and welcoming. I've walked in for bar-wide Irish Car Bombs on more than one occasion. There is always something good on tap (the taps tend to be IPA-biased, which I love). And if beer isn't your thing, they have a full bar. And in nice weather, there is sidewalk seating. I live in the neighborhood and find myself gravitating her frequently. Great place to sit outside reading a book and drinking a pint in the summer. Friendly place to watch a game, or the latest "Breaking Bad" with hoots and hollers from the whole bar. Bottle shops kinda rule. And this one in particular is a good one. Great selection of bottles, solid (yet small) rotating tap selection, a nice owner, and a laid back space to enjoy some brewskis. To top it all off, the taps are almost always dirt cheap for what they are (crafty micros). I got acquainted with this bar via Yelp's On Tap and Yelp's On Tap 2.0, and every time I visited during and after the promotions I enjoyed myself. I love bottle shops. More choices make me a happy camper. I'm easily overwhelmed by large selections of food, drink, movies, etc., but Hop Haven has just enough to keep me from second guessing my beer choices. The staff is always super chill and cool with larger groups rearranging the tables. The last time I was here I got to play Nintendo 64! I'm also really fond of the old-school arcade table in the back. I think my favorite thing about Hop Haven is that it's never busy. It's hidden gem on a busy street. Any place I can walk to with decent beers (and Nintendo!) is a winner in my book! read more

I'm not gonna lie. My affections are easily won. As long as you have a decent beer selection and you don't offend me with horrendous service or inedible food, I'm gonna give you at least three stars. I stumble into this place while walking home after my bike broke down and found Beervana immediately. Jeff, the owner, is super mellow and knows his brewskis. His silent partner Pearl (she's the four legged variety) keeps watch and is as mellow as Jeff. In addition to their small menu, you can get a pizza with your beer. Jeff has worked out a deal with a Bellagios Pizza near Lloyd Center. When you order your pie, they put it at the front of the other orders, and deliver in about 20 minutes. Sweet! This bar is everything that a beer connoisseur could possibly want. BEER: They have it. Oh, do they ever have it. Four rotating taps plus coolers upon coolers of local, micro, and interesting bottles. Whether you're a hophead or malty, you'll find something that you like. COST: It's mega cheap. Seems like it's almost always happy hour, and even when it isn't, their beer won't break the bank. Last time I was in, I got an imperial IPA on draft clocking in at 9% ABV for $3.50. Hot damn. ATMOSPHERE: Everyone is super chill. Maybe it's because it's off the beaten path, but it doesn't get overwhelmingly busy. I went here to meet up with a bunch of my beer geekgirl friends last week, and well, it was pretty meh. They were also showing some live Phish show from Tahoe, and so the place was packed with crunchy, aromatic hippies who were a bit territorial about the space (crowding the bar to get near the one TV showing it, thereby cock-blocking the bar from those who actually, y'know, trying to order a beer.) They do have a pretty good bottle selection in the coolers, but nothing that can't be found at a number of other bottle&tap shops around town(such as Belmont Station, Bottles, or BeerMongers). And they only had 4 taps, and those were all pretty middle-of-the-road stuff, and the majority were California beers, not local ones. Also, it's hard to take seriously any beer bar that serves the beer in chilled glasses. Randomly came to this place with a friend as we were looking for a place for beer (not exactly the most difficult thing to find here in Portland) and I knew this place had opened, but didn't know anything more about it. Are you bored yet? Not very busy on a Thursday night, but the space seems to lend itself to being busy on the weekends. I'm not sure what that means exactly, but I had a beer and hardly any food today and I'm a bit lightheaded. I'm a cheap date. Deal with it. Super cute bartender. An extra star for that. I'm a sucker for a woman in glasses. Says so on the side of my profile. Anyway, it looks like they have 4 rotating taps on any given night. $4 for a pint of beer. They also have a very large selection of bottled and canned beers. The 22oz bottles of beer only go for $5 which seems very reasonable. Didn't really get a chance to look at the selection, but I'm assuming you can find a few that you don't normally find. I think I'll give this place another try. read more

This place has an amazing bottle selection and during happy hour you can get a pint for 2$. The bottle prices vary, but never go over six bucks. They rotate their 4 kegs weekly and the bar tenders are all sweet hearts. They have 2 TVs you can catch most Football games on and the crowd that frequents the bar is mellow and fun. If you are looking for a cheap relaxed place to try some new beers and hang out, this is the best I have found in NE Portland. There is seating outside year round. Thursday nights are my favorite! Head out for Trivia night. First place team gets 25 bucks in Bar cash and it the most fun Trivia I have played in Portland. The topics go everywhere from Current Events, Geography, Sports, and even Sci-fi. Rain is funny, the service is great, and the atmosphere never seems to get competitive. A solid place. I have been here 4 or 5 times and it is always pretty much the same. There are always 5 to 10 dudes shooting it up with the bartender having a good time. The regulars are always really welcoming, which i always really appreciate. Once, I asked the bartender for a lil taster of a beer they had on tap and a guy drunkenly said, "no need, just take a swig out of my glass". I couldn't turn this guy down because it actually seemed like a genuine gesture. I'm still alive btw. Oh and yes people go to bars to drink. You can also do that here. They have a great selection of bottled beer and rotating keg selection. They always have some great stuff on tap but it is rarely the same. I think they have some whiskey and other stuff here but I never see people drinking it....This place is a BEER bar. Damn straight. I'll keep grabbing a beer here and there at the Haven. Great place. If you want to go find a good beer on NE Broadway, or watch a game? This is the only place to go. Other places on the strip are either more expensive and not as fun. This is the kind of place where, if you go to frequently, will know your name. And awesome usual cast of characters are always there. I've never gone there and had them not turn on my sports game. They're very good about that. There is always at least one tap I always want, and they take tap requests. I mean, they could have more than 4 taps, but they're always all good, so it's fine. They have nice benches outside, too, if you want to drink and smoke at the same time, and they're covered, too. They have weekly trivia, on Thursdays, as well as lots of other boardgames, old arcade games in the back, sometimes DJs play music, and they have an N64 hooked up, too, which is just kind of awesome. You can also bring in your own games to play, which is nice. They have darts, too! Owner and all the bar tenders are rad, here, too. Slowly evolving neighborhood cheep beer joint seems to be growing on me. I'm not sure exactly how many times it has taken to get comfortable here but its more than a few. First time in the oddly dark painted place is uncomfortable and awkward, definitely a two or three star beer joint in beervana spoiled Portland. Second time in is a little less uncomfortable but not somewhere I want to be for very long. And finally on the third or fourth time the regulars are less weird and the bartenders/owner? are friendly. 4 rotating IPA heavy taps and 3 double glass sliding doors of cans and bottles is always a good start. The place is a dark cave like eclectic mishmash of large TV's and high seat barstools in front of a large plate glass windows looking toward busy Broadway Street. It is not the most inviting atmosphere for geeking out on beer, but that is what it is. The criteria for a good bottle shop for me is (1) be able to peruse some beers unavailable at the Freddies around the corner (2) try something on tap that I can't get at every other bar in Portland and (3) pick up a mixed six pack and look forward to coming back and try something different. Its nice if folks working there are able to chit chat beer geek talk about local breweries or new releases but this is just a bonus for recommendations or comparisons. Hop Haven is a neighborhood joint not a destination experience. It is convenient for folks like me who live within 10 blocks but is not as refined or focused as a Saraveza, Beer Mongers or Belmont Station. Not sure if they even want to be. Yay for Hop Haven! I don't know why it took me so long to write a Yelp review, but I'm not really on Yelp much at all. Anyway, this place gets the highest of yelps in my book. It's our neighborhood bar, we go at least weekly. Awesome crew, lots of beer, always a good place to watch sportsball, some outdoor seating, and there's a decent food menu (but you can also bring in or order food; Jimmy John's is so close, it arrives in like 5 minutes). Some Yelpers here mentioned that it seems like a closed crowd, locals only, unwelcoming, etc. Though it's often the same (usually) guys at the bar, they are so friendly and always have a good time. Should probably be named Hipster Haven, because while there are a few easy going people here, you can run into some real stuffy patrons, and the owner is somewhat aloof. Really, only draw might be the location, and a little less crowded than bars around. Beer selection is meh, prices don't really wow anyone, tv screens are small, and there are only a few of them. To top it off, if you only come in now and then, you will find that the bartenders sort of ignore you, and you are bound to find some patron just waiting to take something you say out of context. Pretty much a locals only place, had read about this place on Yelp and was staying close by so decided to drop in. Not too many folks there, they were all male, except for one girl, huddled around the bar. No one said hello, almost walked out. Had to wait at the bar for a while to order a beer. I've been going here for awhile, and there really isn't a bar in the area that caters to sports fans like this one. If you got a game you want to watch, they'll usually turn it on (they have the full DirecTV package). They have menus for Belladago's and Skyline Burgers which you can order from and both places will deliver to the bar. Great rotating tap list (often 4 local beers at a time) and the walls are lined with fridges filled with all kinds of bottled & canned beer. There's outside seating too. I've stopped into Hop Haven this evening. There's no room left at the bar. So I took a table. Any table. Everyone is sitting at the bar. And as more folks trickle in- they high five down the bar and squeeze one more stool into the crowded space. Boys sitting cheek to cheek.The bar "where everybody knows your name". Blazers are on the screen, over the bar, and the commercials get muted. Food is delivered from Sky Burger or Bellagios ($10 minimum from Bellagios). There are four rotating drafts (two are IPAs) or you can pick out a bottle from one of two coolers. Order at the bar; but if she's not busy, the bartender will stop by and take your order. She prefers the more malty brews. But appreciates a fresh hop IPA. You can put your feet up (I have), drink your beer, and take a nap... no problemo. Music plays quietly in the background (B.B. Love 'em! As previous reviews have said, they have a good rotating selection, great prices, and awesome staff. It's a great place to find new beers to try in addition to your local favorites. The only let-down is the lack of in-house food, but Bellagio's delivers, so I'm not complaining! I also love the trivia nights - they can get crowded, though, so I wish the owner would ditch the jukebox to make room for more tables. I really enjoy the place. I've been here a few times so far and it's becoming a favorite place to enjoy a pint at the bar or get some bottles to go to drink at home. There is a large bottle selection (22oz bottles are $3.95 to go, $5 to enjoy at the bar) with beers from all over. If I had to guess I'd day at least 100 different ones? There are about 4 beers on tap ($4 a pint) and happy hour is the time score ($2 beers--that's crazy!). The place isn't usually very crowded so take from that what you will. The bar tenders are very friendly and nice, and actually remember you from visit to visit. Thursday nights are trivia nights and the place packs out for that. It's a lot of fun, free to play, and you can win $25 bar certificates. The only complaint really is that it's not open very late (11pm weeknights, 1am weekends although sometimes I think they must close early if they aren't busy). If anything else, Hop Haven a great bottle shop with cheaper prices than Fred Meyer down the road and a better selection than 7-11 on the next block. So if you find yourself in the Sullivan's Gulch area on Broadway, definitely check this place out. read more

I came across Hop Haven when searching for a bar to watch Blazers games. Given all the Blazers fans that hang out there and the great rotating taps of delicious, artisan, hand-crafted, Oregon microbrews, I was in heaven. (Maybe I'm easy to please.) On top of that, the owner learned of my home state roots and puts on the sports teams from where I hail as soon as I walk in the door. If you're not into sports, you don't understand the impact that having your favorite team put on the tv upon your entry into the bar can have. It's extremely 'bro'mantic. Plenty of folks who are not sports fans hang out and enjoy beer, trivia night, or the occasional DJ Richard night. Highest recommendations. read more
