Food can take some time at busy times, but at these prices, that doesn't sting the same way - especially if you're down to chill for a minute (which is very much the vibe). Yes! This is one of those little gems I don't want to write about so it stays a secret. But I've gotta balance my negative reviews on this site so here goes. Red Fox is a ho-hum little hole-in-the-wall that serves cheap drinks and coziness. It's small but it packs a unique folksy/divey flair that comes off only as genuine. They don't have a cocktail menu (a true bummer), but I got both a sidecar and an old-fashioned for $9. THAT'S LIKE, STEALING. That's what I'd pay for one drink further down the street (albeit while looking at coral and tropical fish). So yes, a neighborhood fave, and a trusty ol' joint for some low key drinks. read more

Just moved to the neighborhood from Hawthorne, where the streets are filled with bars open til 2am with A+ and affordable food (read: Gold Dust Meridian, Circa 33, Side St., etc). After getting off work at 11:30, I was starving and Yelpers seemed to dig this place close to me. I trusted you all. Never again. The place itself is cute, if a little dark and trying too hard to be kitsch. There were maybe ten people on the patio and three awful awful 30somethings at the bar discussing 'gastro' cuisine loudly. Bar tender: short girl, checked in on me, seemed nice. Cook: called me Hon every other second. I'm from Baltimore and I still haven't had Hons thrown at me like that since I was the only girl visiting a strip club. Food: got the chili. IT WAS AWFUL. It was gritty, may have consisted entirely of just red chili powder and water, and tasted like the fake 'smoke' flavors you can buy to infuse in food. I had maybe three bites, slid it across the bar, and left just as the debate over 'American Nouveau' cooking got rolling. Whatever the hell that means. Just cook some damn chili. read more

The second star is because this is my neighborhood and this place has awesome potential. The setup and service are confusing and more than lack luster. Sign says line starts here. There is a window too far from the line start to order from with a very unhappy employee sitting there who never says "hey I can take your order over here" so I walk up and ask if we order here and just grab a table? She says there is no table service you just order here. Ummm yea that is what I just said/asked. I order and she ignores me and doesn't acknowledge directly and yells back to bar then you get that? They say "yes that's a lot" . A beer and sparking water with juice. $7 tab and I tip $5. I tipped because I'm not an asshole and maybe it saved the next customer from the hateful attitude of the window troll. I'll def go back. Eclectic Nirvana. Lemme break it down for you. The Building: The theme is The Red Fox. So naturally, there are foxes all over the walls. It's dark, quiet, and cozy. It has a few booths, the bar, and the patio. There seems to be some kind of quiet background music going on, but to be fair, I'm not there for it. The Patrons: It appears to be what one would consider "hipster" but then again, it is NoPo, so maybe that's why? They're usually quite content to keep to themselves, though their conversations can get a little loud, and sometimes, you can't help but listen in. Case in point, a couple were discussing racial generalizations. She mentioned Asian endowment lacking, I couldn't help but pipe up and say "Not always!" Unbeknownst to me, her friend was a male of the Asian persuasion, and laughed and said "I agree with her!" The Food: Oh the om noms. The wedge salad? Amazing. I can't believe I'm actually penning a review prompted entirely by a chunk of lettuce, but it is so much more than that. Bacon, bleu, onions, and other delicious items that I can't recall because I was whisked away to heaven on the first bite. I also had it as a side paired with a burger. I believe it was the bacon bleu burger? Not positive. All I know is that I was in heaven, buzzed, and hungry. Nothing was left on the plate. The Drinks: Not the cheapest, but not horrible either. My go-to is cider, and they have plenty of options in that department. My go-to at this locale is a pint glass with a shot of Sailor Jerry's and a bottle of Woodchuck. The combo is delish, and they know what I want when I walk in. They also carry Crispin, and some others, which I will devolve to as the blood alcohol level rises. The Atmosphere: Relaxed, cozy, calm. A general vibe of happy. Laughter is often heard, but not raucous enough to disturb your own mood. I made my first visit to the Red Fox yesterday afternoon. While it's less than a mile from where I live, I had no idea it was even there: hard to see from the street. Since it was an unseasonably warm winter day, I brought my new rescue dog with me. Everyone, patrons and employees/owner, were super cool about the dog. In fact, the owner brought her out a piece of bacon. As for the bar, it's the type of place I like . . . a little eclectic but in a good way. Stopped in here this past weekend for some dinner and drinks. I ordered the gumbo, shared some friends, and a $1 Old German (yep, one buck). The gumbo was so good and the fries were super thin and we got a huge portion. The prices were also really great. But the best thing about this bar is the waitstaff. The bartender was awesome. Super funny and nice. The chef was also great, he brought us our food and even checked up on us to make sure it was going well (a little unusual in a bar setting). Well, I said I'd come back and give it another shot, and I did. While we were actually served this time, it was a pretty unimpressive experience, and I don't think I need to come back here ever again. Pretty unfortunate, as this is by far the closest bar to my house. First of all- They only have 3 beers on tap, none of which are particularly interesting. Now, I may be a bit spoiled here, but c'mon, this is Portland, craft beer capital of the universe. When the dumpy corner store/fried chicken place down the street has a far larger and more interesting beer selection than your bar, you know you've got a problem. After ordering our drinks we took a booth in the back. The walls in this place are probably 15' high, mostly brick, very dark, and aside from a handful of ~8"x8" strange paintings, completely barren. Quite eerie. The cloudy sky coming through the single skylight along with the dim, flickering chandelier made me feel like I was in some horrible murder dungeon. Most of my drinking is done in dive bars, I'm used to strange decor, but this wasn't so much divey as it was just plain shitty. I thought they might have had one redeeming quality when I noticed the old jukebox against the wall, but alas, it had a large "OUT OF ORDER" sign taped to it. My friend got a bloody mary, which was apparently pretty okay and only $4.00, but it was served in a very tiny glass. They do have my favorite cheap beer, Old German for $2 a pint, which I was happy about. Not nearly enough of a reason to want to come back here though. read more

If I could give a lower rating, I would. First, we walked in and sat at a table to wait for service. After several minutes we realized nobody was coming to our table, so we walked up to the bar to order. The lady serving us was very helpful and helped us chose the drink we'd order in addition to our food. The whole ordering exchange took 5 minutes max. It wasn't a busy bar and we'd never been there before. Both fox burgers were orders as medium and the steak frites was ordered medium rare. The food took nearly 40 minutes to come out. One burger came out over done, the other was straight up rare and the steak was blue rare with a complete char on the outside. None of us finished our food and when we closed our tabs, one person left a $2 tip and I chose not to tip on my $19 tab. The two other people with us paid in cash for their order As we were leaving, the woman who helped us approached us to ask if anything was wrong with the service. Not wanting to hurt any feelings, we said we had gotten full. She then asked about our tips, before we even left our table or could leave a cash tip. I explained I chose not to tip because I'm paying for the Uber for the night for my friends bachelorette party. She cut me off and said if you can't afford to tip, then I shouldn't be going to bars and it was very rude for me not to tip and that we wasted her time taking forever to order. I explained I worked at a restaurant and understood tipping is customary but some people should be able to have fun on a budget and she cut us off again and said she was not looking for a fight, yet was harassing us over our tips. I told her obviously she did want to argue, because badgering us and insulting our budgets was extremely rude. She then stated we needed to leave, as we were already leaving. I stated I had no intentions of returning and she then said I would be going in some book of unwelcome customers. I said we'd be leaving a yelp review for the way we were treated. As we were standing outside waiting for our Uber, she comes storming out for a grand finale in front of the people on the patio where she tried to make us feel bad by telling us we should be ashamed for stuffing a single mom on her tips then threatening to leave a yelp review. I then chose to tell her part of the reason we chose not to tip well or at all was because service was slow for a not busy bar and the food was subpar. At that point she called me a miserable person and tried to shame my friends for hanging out with me? Do not give this place your business. They expect you to care about their personal financial situations but don't give a damn about yours and shame you for it, harasses you in front of other patrons about your tips and calls you an awful person. Since this was the last bar I went to, I think I make my first review here! Red Fox is GREAT! Perfect atmosphere, great beer selection, great food and as a previous poster said, the menu changes. Mike, Chuck, and Robby are the owners and the employees and I think that's why they have pride in what they do. Mike has always remembered me when I walk in, and they run me a tab no questions asked. I visited during their Chinese food menu and it was fantastic. I got the last serving of pork :) Perfectly cook and piping hot. Nothing dry or off tasting. Their burger is fantastic. I got it with fries and brussels sprouts. They even responded well to my request to change the ingredients on my burger due to my food intolerance - not always the case in some places. My first dish ever was the gumbo. It was good. Not like others I've tasted, but I enjoyed it. I will be at Red Fox often. read more

I just don't get the Red Fox, man. It's the closest bar to my house, so I've been there a fair share of times, but the vibe is always off. It's like in the upper reaches of the atmosphere of hipsters. The 'hipsters before hipsters were a thing' hipster bar or something. When my lame normal self visits other hipster bars, I at least feel ignored and uncool in kind some what of a tiny bit nice way? Like, the hipsters maybe just feel bad for me? But the Red Fox is has no problem making me feel like I ought to just fuck off forever. My last trip pretty much has me swearing it off for good, though. The bartender was just a straight up aggressive asshole. My friend and I were the only ones in the bar, aside from a really pretty blonde chick who he was very busy completely ignoring us for. We literally couldn't help but overhear him yap at her about horrible everyone who comes in the bar is, and he can't even talk to his girlfriend (sorry for you, girl!) when he gets home because he hates his job so much. In between flirting with the blonde chick and making me and my friend (who just wanted a couple beers and a bowl of chili) feel like like two needy, life-sucking leeches, he talked about how amazing his two (count 'em!) bands were while he played some bullshit weirdo music that made my ears want to bleed. it was like, too real to be a Portlandia episode. This was really this guy's life. Hope one of your super shitty bands make it, buddy so you can finally quit this god awful day job! You know when you have a server who's just not that great.. maybe the server's a little abrasive, a little anxious, doesn't get you that water or coffee refill when you need it.. that sort of thing. It's those moments where you really start to appreciate the small things a great server does, in a city that has a reputation of poor service yet almost always delivers a friendly, welcoming server who does a good job, smiles a lot, and earns a nice tip. We've all had a spectrum of servers who've both delighted us and left us feeling neglected and in low spirits about our dining experience. But I've never come across the type of passive aggressive, obnoxious behavior from a server than I did recently at this place. I understand there are some who prefer to give higher weight to things like the taste of the food or the general ambiance of a venue, but for me the server or bartender is the make-it-or-break-it of a bar or restaurant. In fact, any frontline staff can really make a large impression on the satisfaction of your experience. In fact in the Red Fox, it was bad enough for a group of us walk out and spend our money elsewhere. We walked into this joint with high hopes, and at first I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped in: the place had a nice din, it was properly lit and probably had some great beers on tap. That's about as good as it got. In our effort to find a seat for 5 of us, we moved a couple chairs and pushed a table around. This apparently set off a rage inside our particular server that came out like a lame high-schooler who picks on his weaker friend in passive aggressive ways. The first taste of this was getting tapped out of the way so our server could angrily towel off our table. This dude was packing some serious pent-up aggression which he let out in bursts of sarcastic one liners, avoiding eye contact and looking at the floor. He said things like "yeah, that WOULD HAVE BEEN COOL IF YOU DID THAT, but you know, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT!" can you hear the inflection in that, the way he's sarcastically telling you "If you weren't a complete asshole, you wouldn't have moved those chairs." He had himself pegged as some sort of victim, I mean he really wanted us to tip him higher for his awkward passively-violent confrontation style. I'm sorry guy, but sarcastically putting your customers down and ostracizing them for making room for a group that's about to dig in and run up a sizable tab is no way to kick off the waiter/customer relationship. When our friend returned from the bar, we came to a consensus that we couldnt' in good faith give a guy (and the bar he represents) a dime of our money. There was no point subjecting ourselves to a night of awkward drink requests through a haven't-gotten-over-my-childhood drama queen. On our way out, the folks who were sitting at the table before us were complaining about how much of a jerk the server was. It was really unbelievable they would let someone like this work at a bar that's trying to build a reputation! I apologized to the barkeep, afterall it wasn't his fault he was working with this guy - at least I certainly hope not. I wouldn't want that guy representing ANYTHING with my name on it. We are all one people. Choose love people, choose love. As long as this dude works here, this place gets no stars from this extremely dissappointed, would-be patron. There are a million places where I'm killed with kindness, and really, that's the world I want to live in. So while I still have some choice in where I spend my money, I choose those establishments that make you feel good that you're spending your money there. Beware to all those lovers of loving love. A dark cloud hangs over this place until they hire a better server. Until then, seek out thy neighborhood tavern that celebrates our kinship, and does not not project thy inner-hatred at those of the innocent. Gotta say.... This spot is in my neighborhood. I've been here for around a year now, and want so badly for the red fox to be a great bar. It has all the makings of one. Legendary potential really. The guy that owns this place is super nice. So I haven't given up yet, but Jesus fucking Christ, the bartenders are the absolute, hands down, no question about it..... the worst. I've tried, trust me, to relate. Everyone has a bad night. I'm a bartender... I get it. At a dive, I totally get it. Lots of people suck... absolutely....I appreciate a surly bartender sometimes. But alternating between hostile and disengaged is not a good look on a bar staff. there is a short brunette who is god damned toxic. Every fucking time. She'll be smiling and talking to the other ass hole behind the bar and then, in one swift move, look toward most patrons,( not at, mind you, toward) like they were actively fucking a baby and stomping the head of a corgi puppy before she opens her sour mouth, like soneone were about to forcefully take a shit in it, to ask "what do you want to drink". It's the most off putting group of jagoffs that I've ever seen ruin the potential of a bar. There is a blonde female bartender with longer hair that is friendly, and a proper bartender, and a longer haired brunette maybe early thirties that is cool. And the owner is great. .... Maybe that's it.... maybe he's so nice, that he scours the city for the most damaged, hateful, unwelcoming, narcissistic, tools that he can find and puts them in a nice bar full of decent patrons in hopes that they will notice how awful they are in relation.... Anyway. It's a shame. If you guys can replace "hair do-che" that's what everyone calls the tall dickhead, and his bridge-troll female counterpart, this spot gets five stars. But so long as the staff stays the same, it's a turd sandwich. With the rambler and crow bar just up the street, don't waste your time. I'll keep checking in to see how long it can go in before the place is either restaffed or closed. When they opened, they had some really cool food inventions. But returning after a hiatus, all the cool stuff seemed to have disappeared and replaced by stuff you could get most everywhere - and dang is it expensive ($8-9 for a burger). Sure, it is still better than your average bar fair, but that's the ONLY reason they got 2 stars. So, it is a local hipster hangout. That in itself isn't bad, but the fact the service was SO slow, and SO terrible while they charge you top dollar for that food earns it -3 stars. The retro aviator sunglass guy at the bar never checked up on our table once for refills - and I had to go up twice during the 45 minute wait for our food to get another round of beers for my gal. The food took FOREVER to come, and again - never a checked up on us. Apparently it's totally cool to just chat up everyone at the bar and ignore the rest of the place. The final nail in the coffin was that the guy added an extra $1 to his tip when I checked my balance statement from the bank. I called up the manager and he comped me, but that's total BS. The minute I walked in, I was enchanted!! They were playing SPARKS!! The Sparks are a little known happy little duo from the seventies... anyway, I ordered a Beam and Coke, which, as I sat and watched the bartender pour a fairly large tumbler of Jack Daniels (that's okay; I'm not that picky) all the way to the top, leaving only a third of an inch or so for the Coke, and not that much ice, my eyes nearly fell out of their sockets. This is a nice neighborhood bar! The burger and fries ($10) is a pretty good deal. The burger was really delicious and the fries are some of the best in the city in my opinion. It's hidden away, has a small covered patio, and a ridiculously dark interior. I haven't tried the food, but my friend who did said it was not very good. The food menu is very limited. Beer selection is good and the service is attentive. In my old neighborhood I had a bar this close to home and I never went to it - it was that sketchy. Red Fox is neither sketchy nor inviting. I want to say that I love this bar. Up until this point I enjoyed this bar but now I'm not so sure. I love that it is my neighborhood bar but honestly that's about it. I know that their gumbo has been decent 2 of the 5 times I have had it. Well tonight I got home and just really felt like a hot dog... kinda remembering that they had dogs on the menu thus I went over to the Fox... upon inquiring about my two hot dog options I was informed that this particular waitress doesn't eat their food so she had no opinion either way. FIRST... as a sales person (and yes cocktail slingers are sales people) sell your product! up-sell... make the customer want it... SECOND... if you work somewhere that serves food don't be surprised if people ask you about the food that YOU serve. Good job on not making the food sound appealing because that was the worst hot dog of my life. How does one over cook a tube steak? and that gumbo... out of a can? Best bar near my house! Seriously. It's laid back, but still busy and fun. It's not too dark or too light inside. The bartenders are always super nice! The bartenders are actually my favorite bartenders in town. They have 3D artwork on the walls. Their french fries are delicious. Awesome little neighborhood bar with casual unpretentious atmosphere, great jukebox, and friendly servers. Sort of tucked away off street just North of the Mississippi hipster zoo, which suits me just fine. Good drink selection, simple menu of great pub food with locally grown ingredients (I tried the tacos last time I was there, downright delectable!). They have a mellow smoking patio out front and the interior is cozy and warm on rainy nights. A great spot to hang out with friends and share drinks and conversations without having to shout over noisy douchebags or horrible pop music. Highly recommended. read more

So, I have two reviews here. Well the first visit I went craving a nice piece of red meat, to my surprise the redfox had one and it was at a decent price. Also the atmosphere and beers were great. I had a steak and fries. They tasted incredible the steak was cooked perfect! Alright visit 2 I go with my buddy and I've been bragging about the steak all day, so when we get there with out hesitation I order a steak blue rare exactly like the last time. Also, my friend ordered the same rare. Well the beers were great again but the steaks came out and mine was over cooked but still juicy and taste great the only problem with both is that they were both extremely small like seriously 1/3 of the size that they were two weeks prior. Well we ate ,paid,tipped etc.. Then went to new seasons and bought two steaks and cooked them at home. Seriously that's how small they were we ate another steak each. read more

Great bar, great food. Aside from the Hamm's tall cans, they also have Old German cans for a buck! I love the rotating art on the walls. We had the Sonoran Dog and the Gumbo Fries and if we lived there we'd be back every night. read more
