Hope and anchor has a small indoor seating area as well as a large patio with a boho style atmosphere. Dogs are allowed on the patio that also has an outdoor bar which is great. I stumbled across this place while visiting "The Pass" on a lazy Saturday afternoon. When I walked I instantly knew I was at home... Modest Mouse and Hank Rollins on the wall, to name a few... first star. I ordered an IPA (a requirement for any good bar-another star) and walked over to the jukebox and within five seconds of looking at the records I turned around to look at the staff wondering "who is the fellow f'in genius that put this chaos together... Dismemberment Plan...Fugazi...etc" (stars 2, 3, 4..). In summary, I spent the weekends there for my short visit but this place is a gold mine for the eclectic musician and/or fan. My husband and I were visiting home for the holidays and spent an evening hanging out at Hope and Anchor (one of the hangouts we tend to gravitate to when we're in town) with his cousins. Drinks: Cocktails are standard, but they are pretty generous with the liquor. Selection of draft beers is limited, but bottle selection is fairly extensive. Atmosphere: I really enjoy the outdoor patio; it's a great place to relax. The theme of the inside seems to be "crowded bar," which really isn't my taste, so I would pick the outside any day (maybe except during windy season). Staff: Very friendly, and didn't take too long to get our drinks to us. Price: The main selling point as far as I'm concerned. The last time we went, we ordered three cocktails and two beers between the two of us, and our tab was $22 (pre-tip). In downtown San Diego, that is literally what you would pay for two vodka-sodas. This the first bar i visited in El Paso and id say I picked a pretty great one. I absolutely loved the outdoor patio! The vibe, decorations and proximity to food (next door but also through any waiter who walks by) was amazing. The drinks are so affordable and the food was so delicious. I got the veggie nachos and added steak (recommendation of one waiter). At first I was skeptical of hummus and balsamic vinegar on nachos but i wanted more. I've heard a lot of people say this but i believe it is true: Hope and Anchor is the best bar to pretend you're not in El Paso. That's what keeps me going back. They're bartenders are no joke. They have a lot of knowledge and will definitely help you when you don't know what you wanna drink but have a certain flavor in mind. I say that from experience because this was the first bar i visited when i turned 21. The nautical theme is awesome and it definitely creates a relaxing atmosphere. I've always tried their featured and specialty drinks of the day like the watermelon margarita but I enjoy having a bloody mary. Their outside patio is unmatched with a mixture of an outside bar, picnic tables, and high bar tables and chairs. They also have a koi pond with a waterfall. This is the type of place you go after work with friends to relax. Be warned! This place by 11pm gets pretty packed so if you wanna get a table get there early. This place has an awesome ambiance and great music! We tried the nopal cheese dip and added chorizo AND bacon. Do it. Seriously, it will change your life. You need this in your life. They have an excellent drink selection too. The only downside is that they don't have a drink menu. BUT our bartender whipped up some great cocktails I had a mango red chili margarita while date had a pinapple ginger rum cocktail that had whipped egg whites and star anise. Went to eat and have a beer -- ordered beer and guy took phone call and blew us off -- we had ordered fire and left a 25% tip but this time guy stays on the phone for 10 minutes while we wait -- we finally have to get another waiter to help his -- horrible service! I liked the mellow ambiance of this bar. I thought the laid back atmosphere was a nice change from the clubs. I didn't feel out of place showing up in flip flops, jeans, and a t-shirt on a Friday night. This bar reminded me a lot of some of the beach bars in San Diego. We came out here for a night out with our friends from the west side (we are from the east side). We asked for water, were given only 1 cup of water when we asked for 3. The other two cups were basically thrown at us, and we were told to go fill them up ourselves from the water jug. Once we went to go get our own water, the bartender told us that we were too intoxicated and we were told to leave. This is unacceptable and unfair treatment for someone who just wanted to drink water. I will not be returning to this establishment. Treat your customers who want to be safe, with better treatment. Someone recommended this bar so we decided to stop in for a quick beer. It was dark and smelly inside. The outside patio was really nice and comfortable. It took 10 minutes to get them to bring us a menu or approach us. The girl bartender from inside looked at us numerous times and never came over. Deserves 5 stars simply because they have a large outdoor patio and have to be one of the few bars in the city that allow dogs. Drink prices are really reasonable, which should be a given for any decent bar located in EP, although surprisingly not always the case. At least the crowd the day I went seemed to be more diverse than what I'd expect for this city and not a hint of pretentiousness which again should be a given for any bar in EP. Definitely my type of bar. They had a good selection of imports, so I plundered right in. Oh yeah and by the way, those beers, they're all about 10% alcohol.
