An understated exterior hides a great butcher shop inside!
    Jim M.

Ok. Like, if you don't know where this place is, shame on you! One of Sanfords hidden gems that is out of the way and out of this world. It is a butcher shop. Feels like a butcher shop, smell like a butcher shop. But the staff is quick to greet you and remind you to take a number. The place was packed with weekend grillers, home smoker afficionados, and families stocking up for the week. Fresh food, spices, frozen foods, and weekend specials will make your head soon on the first visit... but it won't be your last! Follow them on Facebook for all the specials!

Since 1967 Hopkins Meat Packing has provided Sanford and its surrounding cities with top-quality meats, custom butchering, and a variety of fresh grocery items. This family-owned butchery is smaller and has less of a selection than Gaff's in Deland; however, their affordable product pricing and location are what keep us coming back. I recently picked up: - 1.33 lbs. of ground chuck = $4.65. - 1.19 lbs. of Italian Sausage = $4.05. - 1.11 lbs. of Smoked Rind-on Bacon = $6.64. - 1.33 lbs. of Smoked Rib-in Bacon = $7.82. - 2.47 lbs. of Cheddar Brats = $9.13. I have tried all of the meats except for the ground chuck and Smoked Rind-on Bacon and I have no complaints. My favorite item out of this purchase has been the Cheddar Brats, I haven't had these in years and when I saw them, I had to have them. They were very cheesy but not so much that they overpowered the flavor of the meat, done just right. The staff here are helpful, friendly, and take the time to answer any questions you might have. The store has a small selection of vegetables for purchase; alternatively, they have a large selection of pickled items, specialty seasonings & dry batters, cheeses, canned goods, condiments, oils, dried legumes, Local Honey & Jams. We are fortunate Hopkins Meat Packing is only a 10-minute drive from our home. They have been a Godsend through the Covid-19 pandemic because we have been able to find items in short supply, such as pork chops, rib meat, and chicken wings when Walmart and Publix were out. If you happen to be in the Sanford area, stop into Hopkins Meat Packing to see what they have to offer, you will not regret it.

Hot smoked sausage that I got from Hopkins that I made with Hatch chile coleslaw and garlic bread.

This place is a bit hard to find and even when you do find it, it is hard to guess of the culinary wonderland that you will find within this nondescript building. While they have a few grocery items, the focal point is the meat. They have what you expect, but you can also find some specialty items like goat, rabbit, etc. In my opinion, the real gem is their sausages. On my last trip, I bought their hot smoked sausage, English style bangers, and hot Italian sausage. All three were absolutely amazing. This was my first time trying their Italian sausage and it will be my go to when I buy Italian sausage. I also bought some goat and grabbed a roast, as well. The staff is extremely friendly and answer all my questions. It is not fancy, by any means, but what they create is pretty magical. I realize how fortunate I am to have such a wonderful place somewhat close to me. I live on the east side of Orlando and will drive out here because of the quality and that is a testament to the wonder of this amazing place. Check them out.

I like this place! A close friend recommended it and when I came here to check out reviews they were pretty glowing. We went to look for a large beef cut for a party next weekend. The guy who helped us was super nice to cut a brisket in half for us since we only needed 5lbs. They had some really large and fresh looking steaks in the case and all sorts of sausages. Hubs picked out some cheddar jalapeño ones to grill next weekend. I also grabbed a blackening seasoning, they had tons of blends! Pretty cool. This gem is not easy to find but the GPS took us right there. The cashier was also very nice, she seemed happy to be there. We will return!

Hidden gem is a nice way to describe this meat market and small grocery near the Lake Jesup Wildness area. Drove by on my way to a hiking adventure and noticed the Hopkins sign. Hmm...A meat shop out here? Well what a surprise. Lots of meat if you're into that, and they will cut it to your specifications. If you bring in your hunted game then will prepare it for you if you pay for that service. This is not why I was there, but interesting to know. Shopped from their little refrigerated grocery section and picked up some frozen veggies, spices, and wanted to try their house made jalapeño pork sausage. So many unique choices here for spices, marinades, and dry-rubs for meats. Lots of dry grocery goods like rice, beans, and other side dish items. Could not believe I have not heard of this place, what a great little find down a country road in Sanford. Will definitely be back to up my spice game to max level! And maybe grab a steak or two.

Incredibly disappointed in the TLB. I've been a fan for a long time, especially their dry aged…read moremeats, and am more than willing to pay for this type of product. Today, though, I noticed them selling Japanese Wagyu as: Sake Infused Dry Aged A9 Kobe Strip. This is a very scammy way of selling a product. First, meat is graded broadly on three scales - USDA (choice, prime), BMS (beef marbling scale - common in Aus), and the Japanese grading scale. (A1-A5, with most high end steaks being A4 or the gold standard, A5). https://meatnbone.com/blogs/the-clever-cleaver/meat-beef-grading-system-understanding A9 doesn't exist. A BMS 9 could be an A5. But this is mislabeled. They have also used the term A11 in their instagram account. Maybe they are confusing BMS for A-scale, or maybe they are intentionally trying to make their product seem better than competitors. Furthermore, not all Japanese Wagyu is Kobe beef. Kobe beef refers to Tajima cattle raised in Hyogo Japan. The export of this beef is highly regulated to only certain restaurants and purveyors, who will display a seal and certificate certifying the origin of the beef. It is rare, expensive, and most importantly, Bush Brothers (Local Butcher's wholesale purveyor) is not certified to sell, nor do they use in any way, the term Kobe Beef. So it is incredibly likely that this product is mislabeled. This isn't illegal (Kobe beef doesn't have a TM in the US), but it is disingenuous. https://www.kobe-niku.jp/en/contents/certification/index.html https://instagram.com/bushbros Next, "sake infused"is incredibly confusing. Is it referring to the myth that Kobe cattle are massaged with sake? Is it referred to the use of koji (fermented cooked rice) which is often used as an aging accelerant? Or did they really take Japanese Wagyu and infuse (inject, soak?) with sake? And why on earth would you do that!? It would be like making sangria with a bottle of DRC. This product is likely a A5 strip loin (which Bush Bros. does carry) that has been aged. Market price would be somewhere around $175-185/lb. (An unaged cut would be around $150/lb.) When I asked for more information on the most expensive cut of meat in their shop, I was treated with disdain and a dismissive attitude. Neither member of the staff could answer my questions other than to say "It's the highest grade of Kobe beef." To charge $215 dollars for a grade that doesn't exist, for a steak that isn't from Kobe, with an aging method that seems dubious at best, is disingenuous and plays on a lack of consumer knowledge. If The Local Butcher themselves don't know the differences here, they shouldn't sell this product. If they do, they should be ashamed of themselves.

The other item my wife always has to pick up are their Italian cookies. They are from a local baker, and are so delicious. Look for them near the register. Yeah yeah. However, there's still no excuse for rude service. I walk in and go straight to the deli. If you know this place: You walk in, turn right and there is an aisle with coolers on either side. This leads to the back deli. It is cramped, but not terrible. A couple was in front of me. I could tell by the demeanor of the gentleman that they had been there a while already and the woman was asking multiple questions of the staff. No big deal. A little annoying, but some people are just talkative. This goes on, an estimate of say five minutes. Five minutes of a woman asking questions of the male staff member as the young woman staff member chimed in with information or an answer. At no point during this time did either of them acknowledge that someone was waiting or anything. No eye contact. Nothing. Finally the couple is done. The young woman behind the counter asks what I want. I order. In the middle of her slicing one of the deli meats, another customer comes up and asks for a pound of the meat she was currently slicing. Customer service will tell you to take care of customers in the order of arrival. Not according to this place. No, she decided to skip over me and service someone else. I understand that it was probably easier that way - given you might have to clean up between meats, or whatever else. And that's fine - IF YOU COMMUNICATE with the customer. The lady ordering the meat apologized. For reasons? It wasn't her fault. I appreciate it, but unnecessary. Finally after waiting for a longer time, the young woman behind the counter apologized for the delay. There never should have been a delay. Plus the sandwich was lackluster. I try to avoid big chains. I like small businesses. But when you treat people like this; why should I return?
