I have been using this rental place for years, and have loved them. Until yesterday. We had a ton of guests over for the holiday who wanted to rent kayaks, SUPS and boats. We showed up at 10:00am (the time it is suppose to open) and proceeded to wait 45 mins. No one ever showed up. There were 4 other groups waiting to rent to and no one ever came, they all left as well. We called the number a few times and it went straight to voicemail. We were all so bummed and frustrated that no one showed up. Some of the group went today and told them what had happened and he didn't even apologize or offer any sort of discount or coupon for the inconvenience. I hope they get their act together because I have been recommending them to everyone. Very frustrated. read more

We just finished a two hour cruise around the harbor on their electric boat. They were very helpful, professional, and courteous. The boat itself was clean, worked well (even had a radio which was nice), and we'd consider renting again. No complaints here. read more

The WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!! If I could give a negative, I would give it a negative 10! I am serious! This place used to be really nice, the man that used to run it was awesome. They must have changed hands because the folks that run it now could give a Rat's A** about customer service or equipment safety. Not only are they rude, but they make fun of the people who rent the kayaks, making snide unflattering remarks when the person is out of earshot. (I know this because I have my own kayak and was hanging back waiting for my family to get their kayaks and I could hear them.) We rented two double kayaks, one for my daughter and her boyfriend and one for my husband and our other daughter. The kayak (#13) for my daughter and her boyfriend was extremely unstable from the get go, but the woman who rented it to them said it would be fine. WRONG! Halfway through the trip the thing just keeled over. They both got back into the thing only to have it keel over again. My daughter was so upset that my husband then took my daughter's place in the kayak and again it keeled over. Finally, my husband and other daughter traded kayaks and they were able to limp back to the kayak place - the back end of the kayak was totally submerged the entire way back.. Upon their return my husband asked if they knew the weight rating on the kayak - they had no idea whet he was talking about. When the guy pulled the kayak out of the water you could clearly see it was cracked and had been taking on water, which accounted for the instability. When asked for a refund the woman flatly refused and was the biggest b***ch you have ever encountered. Such a miserable experience - we will never return and will also be reporting them to the BBB and Harbor Patrol for putting people in unsafe kayaks. read more

Took my family for a boat ride. We had a blast. The boat we booked broke down so we were given a different boat. I have read previous reviews that this has happened before to others. We did the 2 hour. If drinking any beverages, the 2 hr may be too long. We actually came back 15 min early because everyone had to use the restroom really bad. It's nice to have a boat rental option in Oxnard and this place meets the need. However, the boats are pretty basic and slow and you really can't go anywhere except within the channel. There's not that much to see except the houses but you can enjoy pretty much the same view from walking in the area. read more

Please go anywhere else but here, ANYWHERE. I am am avid kayaker and have never had an experience as horrible as the one I experienced at this place. The lady was argumentative and confrontational from the start, rented me a kayak that was too small and cracked that proceeded to take on water mid way through and i wasn't given a proper fitting life jacket which i found out when i tried to put it on. When trying to explain our issues after the ride was over she kept interrupting and talking over myself and telling me that there was nothing wrong. What could have been a great experience turned into the Most horrible customer service an kayaking I have ever experienced in my life. This place used to be really cool, but then the people got a bad attitude. The lady was extremely rude to everyone and they yell at you. She wouldn't sign the paper saying we rented an hour worth of boat time. She said we had to earn it and that it was a courtesy thing and that maybe she'd sign it next time if we earn it. Awesome rental shop, very friendly and helpful, even gave us some extra time in the kayaks! Super reasonable prices, small boats, kayaks, paddle boards and more to rent. My girlfriend and I took the kayaks around the harbor for just over two hours and had an awesome afternoon. I'd go again, just a note though, they are CASH ONLY which isn't a huge issue as there is an atm in the shop at the corner of the parking lot. read more

Unfortunately, after some customer service and communication issues, we did not have a great experience. Granted, had we gone out on the boat we reserved we might have had a better day, however there's a story behind that... My dad made a reservation, two weeks in advance, for 8 members of my family to take a boat out for my birthday on the day after Thanksgiving. We showed up for our 11am reservation, but the sign indicated winter hours started at 11:30. We waited until 11:45 and no one showed up. We called and called, no one answered. Finally someone called us back and said we could come back for 2 free hours. We came back to collect the voucher and the worker, Mario, said we actually could only have 1 hour, despite what he told my dad earlier on the phone. All in all, it was a complete waste of time and it's been awhile since I've experienced such terrible customer service. We had a nice afternoon regardless, but I'd recommend using another boat company. read more

I have used Hopper Boat Rentals many many times and unfortunately our experience on Saturday may be the last time we use the company. Prior to this experience, I would give Hopper Boat Rentals 5 stars. Every time I've called to make a reservation, there have been no hiccups, staff was courteous, prices reflect what you get, and we have a great time. A few weeks ago, I reserved a 12 passenger boat for Saturday 11/24 at 10 am. We arrive at 9:55 am and the dock gate was locked. Someone came by to open it for us and our large family of 9 waited on the dock. The woman who helped us went off to clean kayaks and get things ready for the day insisting that a different woman would be helping us shortly. After knocking on the shed door a few times, the person in the shed multiple times that she would help us soon. At 10:20, she finally came out to help us with a boat. I told her we had a reservation at 10 and that we were impatient to get on the boat. She was dismissive and unapologetic. We get the paperwork done and she tells us to get in the boat, she would be right over with the key. We all settle in and wait again. She instead helps another customer while we are all waiting in the boat. Finally after another trip over to her and insisting that she help us, she is frustrated and rude. She goes over the directions and says, if you have issues to text not call because she doesn't respond to calls. The harbor was beautiful and the ride was great. Everyone had a good time seeing seals and even a dolphin. Some family had to take the train so we got back to the dock around 12, as intended, despite not starting our cruise until 10:30 or so. Upon our arrival, there was a young man helping on the dock. He is the one I've usually seen and interacted with before. I asked him if there was a manager on duty or something because I wanted to express how disappointed we were with our experience getting going. To my surprise, the woman that helped us was in fact the owner! So, to Sara, the owner of Hopper Boat Rentals, I hope that you hire more staff to help you manage the reservations or do something to improve your customer service. We are locals and have rented through the company many many times and are disappointed that we had a bad experience with you (not your staff members). read more

This place never disappoints. I've been here twice--to paddle boat and paddle board. The view is always outstanding. Staff is pretty laid back. They'll let you leave your shoes and other belongings in the shed if you're afraid that it might get wet or fall into the harbour. Overall, just a perfect place to enjoy the ocean :-) read more

Been here several times to rent pontoon boats and kayaks. They are always friendly and helpful. I've been there solo and with large groups. They don't charge as much as the big shots on adjacent peninsulas, so that's a big plus. I rented my very first kayak there, and it went so well that I bought my own, but I still go back to rent with friends and family. read more

Terrible customer service. We tried to call and no one answered. We went down there and we stood in line for over 15 minutes with no one helping us. The owner, Sarah, came out and answered a phone call right in front of us and took a reservation while we stood there and never helped us. We went to rent an electric boat during their normal business hours and no one was there. The place looked abandoned. There were also a group of ladies there who had made a reservation the day prior and had actually spoken with someone. We all waited about 45 min for someone to show up but no one came. A man who worked in the building next door saw us through the window and came out to tell us, "you'll be lucky if the lady that works here ever shows up." He also told us that he sees people waiting for this lady almost every week, even if they had made prior reservations over the phone. And no one ever comes. So I guess that's how this place operates. They show up whenever they feel like getting out of bed for the day, and apparently that isn't very often. My toddler son almost lost it sitting on the dock waiting to get on the boat that we never got on. How do they afford to keep such an expensive spot if they don't have any income (well, the income is not coming from customers anyway...). Maybe a front? Very disappointing. read more

If you are looking for a relaxing way to tour the harbor, rent an electric boat. My husband and I saw people driving them around the harbor on New Years Eve and went down on New Years Day to give them a whirl. The day we went out was very windy but the plastic enclosure, which is completely see through, kept us warm and dry inside the boat. We were helped by Francisco who was exceptionally friendly and informative. We will be back with our family to take a two hour tour on the 12 passenger boat. Take it for a spin! This is by far the best representation of BAD business. We called ahead a day prior and made an appointment for a 10am boat rental. The lady we scheduled with told us to be there 20 minutes prior. When we arrived, there were 4 other parties waiting as well. After an hour of waiting- NO ONE showed up. We made a reservation, need I say more? Hopper boat rentals shouldn't be in business. They don't care about their customers. People schedule these kinds of activities for their family vacations and to fail to show up is absolutely wrong. Really wonderful rental place. My sister and I rented a double kayak for $20 per hour and took it around the harbor. The service is great and the prices are fair. It's a bit hard to find, but there's a really famous seafood place in the same plaza, so just park there and walk towards the water and you'll see a ramp leading down towards the place. read more

When we went there were two broken boats which kept us from going out and for some reason somebody else's later reservation was more important than ours. Obviously this place doesn't think ahead. But recently wanted to get back into it, So Last week my friend and I decided to Kayak and We found Hopper Boat Rentals. And I was taken back by the incredible service. Really Friendly and out going service was provided. So good we went back again today! I have rented Kayaks before from other people in the harbor a couple years ago and I was not amped to get back into the water partially because of the service. We went out for a boat ride last weekend and it was awsome!! We brought a picnic lunch and a bottle of wine, and listened to some music. It was such a relaxing couple of hours. We even saw a couple of seals. Sarah the lady that was down there helping us was very sweet. She let us know that she actually bought the business in November of last year, and how much she loves her job, which is quit refreshing to hear (that someone actually loves thee job). Total bummer. We rented a boat for a special family event and after they yelled at me, I was not feeling so festive. The way they have the boats in the dock makes it difficult to leave the dock. Our boat was right behind another boat and there is a dock on the other side. They literally pulled the boat with a rope and then I was supposed to start driving it once we cleared the dock and other boat. I drifted to the side a bit and they started yelling at me and threatened to not let me take the boat out after I paid $200.00! It is not a difficult boat to drive but the way they have it set up is stressful and not worth the money. I have NEVER been yelled at by a vendor before and I am still really pissed about this experience.
