Canterbury Woods in Williamsville is a CCRC and serves residents who are totally independent to…read morethose who need Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing or Memory Care. A person must be at least 62 to be accepted and must come in at the Independent level. There are several financial packages available. Whatever the rental cost of their apartment in Independent will be the same cost if the resident requires any of the other services as time goes on. In Independent Living, where I am most familiar, meals are provided in two fine restaurants and a cafe, and weekly cleaning is provided if you want it. Many people compare the living culture here with that of a cruise ship - there is access to a pool with a daily aqua aerobic class; yoga classes, balance and other exercise classes are available as well. There are also art classes; assorted classes in various topics by resident college professors; and to top is off there is a theater where professional and amateur performances are readily presented to the community and residents needn't even going outside. There is also a convenience store manned by volunteers and a Weekly Happy hour with music, wine and snacks. There is so much more! In my opinion after living here for eight years, I think it's a fine place to retire!

I understand the odor in regards to urine and stool, but to let somebody sit in that for hours on end is deplorable. The staff is constantly complaining about their hours, the pay, and the residents. The staff is continuously on their phones with personal text or calls and the language that they use is disgusting. People are there to get better or maintain whatever life that they have left and the staff is so miserable that they can't even give them the dignity that they deserve. If I could give the zero stars I would. I'm only grateful that my father was only there for a week.

My father was in there only a week until he begged us to take him out and he was there for rehabilitation. They are extremely understaffed. It would take over 30 minutes once you push the help button for someone to come in and check on you. So if you need to use the restroom, you better think of it way in advance if you need help. The halls were an obstacle course even if you didn't have mobility issues. The food was atrocious and I was there during summer and it was extremely hot. They would have a fan in the hallway pointed at the nurses station. I would say take your time and find a decent place and don't trust your loved ones here

We had to place our mother at Beechwood Continuing Care 12/2019 and 3 months later the nation faced…read morethe unthinkable... The Covid-19 Pandemic. I will never forget the night on March 19, 2020. I had to say goodbye to my mother, who we saw & cared for Everyday. This was the Beginning of the End. Throughout the pandemic we FaceTimed. Then there were scheduled 1/2hr door visits. I wondered why the staff was bringing my mother to the door visit by wheelchair. My mother walked with her walker, she even got into my 3 row SUV. I insisted on seeing if my mother could walk, sadly she could not. Door visits and FaceTime calls were getting more difficult. I began to see the fast decline. My mother was constantly confined & isolated in her room (bc of positive Covid cases) with no stimulation or socialization. She never got Covid. By the time I finally got inside for an indoor visit she didn't know me. She knew we were her daughters because we had to tell her, but she didn't know our names. Then we were allowed 2 designated caregivers. By then, my mother barley opened her eyes. We took her on an out pass (which was difficult because she's now confined to a wheelchair) for a makeover. I took over doing all of her laundry again. Cleaned her room (it was awful), bought new bedding and tried to get things back to "our way". Eventually we had to start feeding her homemade meals that we brought each day. Then we began to purée her food because I noticed she was pocketing her food and struggled to swallow. Then I began to notice she couldn't drink out of a cup or through a straw. Beside myself, after a long weekend at Beechwood I made a call Monday morning reaching out for help to teach me ways to get my mother to drink. DID I MENTION THAT EVERY-TIME THERE WAS AN ISSUE IT TOOK US DAUGHTERS TO NOTICE, TO REPORT IT TO THE SOCIAL WORKER OR VISITING NURSE. So now I finally get a call after reaching out for help that my mother has aspirating pneumonia and a nodule on her lung (they scrambled and ran tests the day after I made the call). So now they finally tell me about "thickened liquids" which I never knew of. My mother should've been on the thickened liquids the day she went on puréed food. BEECHWOOD HAD DROPPED THE BALL SO MANY TIMES, ITS DISGUSTING! Now at least 31/2weeks go by and I hear from No One. I wanted to have my mother evaluated by hospice but was convinced by Rose the social worker that if I did that I would lose the visiting nurse from IH and that keeping her would be better at this point. So I listened. I filled in for my sister on Friday 4/30 (we went every night) because they have a "fill in" LPN from different floors because the full time day LPN and night LPN need time off so it was important to be at Beechwood especially those nights. My mother ate the puréed meal I prepared but I couldn't get her to drink my thickened liquids. I got her washed up and settled in. I expressed my concerns to the LPN on duty, my mothers breathing was like a loud rattle (I took a video and showed the LPN). I even asked to stay. She said "I got you, I'll look in on her" and then told me she got her to drink a bottle of water and glass of milk that day. I said no, no.... Thickened Liquids Only. The LPN indicated that it didn't say that on her care sheet, she even showed me, then she made notes. I left feeling uneasy. I called around 10:15 to check on my mother which I never had to do. The LPN said there are NO CONCERNS FOR BETTY, I gave her a glass of puréed OJ and put her to bed at 9:30 so there are NO CONCERNS. I received a phone call at 7:15AM telling me my mother passed away. The phone call that I made Friday night could've been handled so differently. All the LPN had to do was put me on hold to check in on my mom. They claim she died peacefully in her sleep. My struggled with her breathing, she was filled with fluid and she was all alone. I'm heartbroken DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVED ONE IN THIS FACILITY. All you get is lip service from everyone. The staff are lazy & incompetent. Okay

She cares. This review is for the others. In 6 days, I was 1.) refused a copy of my medication list, or copy of at home care prescribed by doctor. I asked for ICE. Was told " we NEVER give ice to any resident at this facility. You need a doctors order for it." I asked him to look or to call the Doctors office. NEVER DID . IT WAS IN MY ORDERS. HE NEVER CHECKED . JUST REFUSED TO GIVE ME ICE FOR SEVERE INFLAMATION. 2.) no pain pills given when over due and asked for. (16 hours no pills, 1 day out of MAJOR surgery) 3) NO WOUND CHECKS! a FEW VITALS TAKEN, 4.) NURSE REFUSED TO DRESS MY DRAINING WOUND! . Dr. said a loose dressing, she refused to put it on after he left, said " I'm not doing that, if he wants to he can. 5.) I HAD TO DRESS MY OWN WOUND FOR 3 DAYS! They gave me pads and tape! THE WORST ?? 6.)THE NURSE GIVING OUT MEDS, GAVE ME MY PAIN MEDS (hydrcodone) 4 1/2- 5 HOURS EARLY. SAID "NO RUSH, TAKE THEM ANY TIME, I FIGURE YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WAIT ON ME. ??!!! WT??? 7.) MY CHART WAS NOT UPDATED. (no wound checks so no updates and nurse told me I still had a bandage on it when the bandage was off for 3 days at that time) 8.) DIRTY TOWELS left in the bathroom by shared bathroom were not picked up for days. I had to ask ! Cross-conatmination? ! 9.) Not told when my 'shower day' was till 7 pm. 10.) Did not change the sheets till I piled them in the doorway. 11.) Did not update me about complications and care of. 12.) Did not take my laundry, 13.) The bed didn't work correctly, 14.) requesting my medical records, I was given an estimated page count . ("usually over 100 pages, so the flat rate fee is better" ) 60 DOLLARS?? How many pages????? LooK !!! Most of them were very nice, a few had snotty attitudes, but regardless, I was there for CARE, I was NOT CARED FOR. I WAS NOT TAKEN CARE OF AND REQUESTED TO BE OKAY'D TO LEAVE AS I DID NOT FEEL SAFE ABOUT WOUND CARE AND MED DISTRIBUTION.
