Dr. Dale has been the best thing for me and my family when it comes to our Dental Hygiene and maintenance. For me personally, I have a thick file from my previous dentist since I was very active in my youth and had multiple injuries resulting in complicated situations (crowns, infections, root canals). For the longest time I was just barely maintaining, but ever since I started seeing Dr. Dale my pediatric health significantly improved. He simply cares about his patients and does a very good job in his workmanship and furthermore explaining how to maintain. Dr. Dale is a very honestly dentist as well which makes a huge difference when it comes to trust. Lastly, my three kids (6, 4, and 2) feel very comfortable coming for their cleanings/maintenance and they make the experience "fun" by giving them little goodie bags which they love. He left me hanging and I'm out searching for a new dentist. I still get mailers and advertisements from Horizon Dental but now he expects me to pay the full amount out of pocket. If I could give minus 100, I would do so!! For two years, I complained to Dr. Dale Villasenor that the four-tooth bridge that he created was loose. He kept telling me that there was no problem and no treatment needed. It finally fell out and I was left with black, decayed stubs. The worst one, a molar, is so decayed, it might be life threatening. Meanwhile he neglected to provide insurance-paid cleanings for an entire year. After such neglect I needed a deep cleaning for which I was charged a significant fee, which I paid without complaint. After three months of trips to three oral surgeons, Dr. Dale Villasenor finally created two crowns to replace the fourth-tooth bridge. It took four hours! He installed them over black stubs at no charge. I am still left with a badly broken, very decayed molar and a big empty space next to it. So chewing on my right side is impossible and now I must have very risky, serious oral surgery that is complicated by other serious health factors. However, To make matters worse, he refused to rectify his work on the left side, which is so bad that I can't chew on that side either. Food gets painfully caught in that side. My bite is so off, that every night I painfully bite my lip so badly it bleeds profusely. I previously had Blue Shield Dental insurance for twenty-five years. At the request of Horizons Dental, I switched to Deltacare USA. After all of this, I remained loyal to this family dental practice. However, to add insult to injury, after 40 years as a patient at Horizons Dental, today I received a letter terminating our "relationship." Now I can't find a competent provider who takes Deltacare and there is a four-month wait period for Delta PPO insurance. So not only is my life in danger from the rotted teeth, it will cost a fortune to rectify the damage! read more

Similar to others, if I could give this practice 0 stars, I would. In my seven decades of going to dentists, I have never experienced a more unprofessional staff of professionals. As a professional myself, I found it inconceivable to be treated as I was treated. Issues relate to both my treatment as well as relationship with staff. At my first appointment, I had a "cleaning" which was the worst one I ever had. (My husband who had a teeth cleaning as well had the same comment) It was superficial, at best. (I even questioned after the cleaning whether the technician was finished). Most of the time was spent with x-rays and explaining the huge amount of work that needed done and thousands of dollars expenditures. Due to the anticipated large expenditure, I asked the staff if they would send my x-rays to another dentist, and I explained that it was to compare the amount of work needed and that I had no intention to leave the practice. After the consultation with the other dentist, I called to request time to talk to Dr. Villasenor and was told that he could not talk to me until my next cleaning in 3 months--because "he is too busy". I then asked whether I could discuss my treatment by phone with either Dr. Villasenor or his assistant. The receptionist rudely said not for three months and accused me of not trusting the practice. I was shocked, and thinking that the dentist should be alerted to the above scenario, and wanting to discuss my treatment, I e-mailed Dr. Villasenor to explain what had transpired and that I simply wanted to review the consultation and different recommendations. He never responded. I ultimately learned that the majority of staff are all close relatives and perhaps Dr. Villasenor may have never gotten my email and/or was so insecure about treatment recommendations that he would feel threatened because I sought out a second opinion. It is notable that the only "response" that I received, related to this practice, was a referral to a specialist( which I never requested) for a recommended treatment. read more

Horizon Dental doesn't want one to question their prices by calling ones insurance carrier. After I questioned their prices for a crown I called my insurance carrier and was told that the crown would be a quarter of the cost using the same material that they quoted. Also on the same crown they had highlighted 2 crowns on the form. When calling them back the next day I wanted to know which one needed replacing? Ivy told me she didn't have time to talk to me and hung up. I then called a few days later, and was told abruptly and rudely by Maria they told which crown. I told them that 2 crowns were highlighted and wanted to know which one needed the new crown. I asked to talk to Dr. Dale. They immediately hung up on me. A few years back they were charging over the amount for deep cleaning. The medicinal rinse was not needed and added it to amount as well as other descriptions of products. On my plan one deep cleaning was covered by my insurance and they charged me $200. A waiver needed to be signed so that the deep cleaning could be done. They have cancelled my normal 6 month teeth cleaning the day before twice and had to wait another 4 months to get my teeth cleaned. The front office staff, Maria the receptionist and Ivy the office manager are extremely rude and unprofessional. The dental office will overcharge for their service anyway they can. Calling and verifying with your insurance carrier has proved it several times to me. They are not honest and forthright and can not be trusted. read more

I was scared away before I even made it to the office! Horizons was my new dental place after I changed insurances. I called a few weeks ago to make an appointment, but no one answered the phone. So, I left a message. When I got no reply a few days later, I called again. No answer. How can these people not answer their phone? Third time I called a week later, I finally got a hold of Maria. She was curt, clueless, and rude. I was told they would need to get a copy of my x-rays from my previous dentist, since I had a cleaning done 6 months earlier. I gave her the number to my dentist and she said she'd call them to get the copies. In the meantime, she wanted me to make an appointment to see the dentist prior to my cleaning appointment. Why? Standard procedure. I told her I didn't need any additional work and requested a cleaning on the same day, but she refused. Whatever. So, I waited for her to call me back to confirm her receiving my x-rays as she told me she would. A week later...still no call. So I decided to call her. She stupidly told me that she couldn't get a hold of my dentist so she couldn't get my x-rays. I asked her how many times she called...once, she said, and left a message which no one returned. I asked her if she's called since then. She says no. She then asks me to call my own dentist to get my x-rays. Without the x-rays, the dentist won't see me. I asked her why she hadn't called me to let me know of all this, seeing as my first appointment was just a couple of days away. She had no answer. What kind of messed up shit was this? I had to keep calling her. I have to get my own x-rays, I then have to see the dentist to make sure my teeth are ready for cleaning, then I have to waste another day to get my teeth cleaned?! To top it all off, Maria was pissed at me! Not sure why, but I think she thought I should be doing her work without complaining. I bet if I hadn't called the last time and had just showed up to my appointment, the dentist wouldn't see me and they would probably have tried to charge me $50 for a missed appointment. I don't care how nice or not the dentist is, but Maria lost him a customer. Although, in my opinion, most of the time the staff reflects the dentist. I came from another dentist in Pittsburg that basically blew through my insurance $$ taking well over a dozen xrays during a 4 hour root canal and left me with a 2ndary tooth that actually needed a root canal. I spent 12 months dealing with the pain until the new year started and I had $$ in my dental account to go see another Dr. Dr. Dale identified the problem referred me to Dr Choi (Endodontics which by the way he did a root canal in an hour vs the 4 hour bs I dealt with before, so he is a 5 Star Dr. as well). Dr. Dale and team are fantastic!!! My husband and I both have had such a great experience there. We have not had the privilage of dental insurance for many years, and in the past, we have had a string of unscrupulous, upselling and not-technically-skilled dentists-truly aweful. The lack of technical ability on the part of previous practicioners has created present day problems which Dr. Villasenor corrected swiftly, gently and with great results. This office was a breath of fresh air. Previous dentists have ignored my requests for repair of these things that were minor but they would not take the time. It took Dr. Dale no time at all! I just had a filling done and the work was 100% pain free, quick, and an excellent result. Everything they do is explained beforehand so you have an opportunity to ask questions or express concerns. Was I spoiled with having an amazing dentist and care staff growing up? Absolutely! However, that doesn't change the fact that this place really turned me off. Dr. Villasenor is a good dentist and he was very thorough in his examinations. The problem comes when dealing with his support staff. Making an appointment is routine and there's no problem there but when you arrive and have to check-in, pay, etc. things get a little off-putting. First, dental charges are never cheap, I know that, they know that, so when it's time for me to spend my money I like to do it in a place that is warm and inviting. I walked in and wasn't greeted, there was no one else in the lobby and the receptionist just stared at me waiting for me to make the first move. I gave her my name and told her why I was there, no problem, she had the paperwork ready. There was a co-pay that I hadn't expected as I misunderstood what type of appointment I was getting. I wasn't too excited about that and asked for clarification and explained that I'd rather just have a normal cleaning with no co-pay. The entire conversation was met with exasperated breath and condescending tones. Ok, so maybe I misunderstood my appointment but I really don't need a lecture from the person I'm paying money to. I like my money and I work hard for it; my money can also be used somewhere else and it seems that dental offices are pretty readily found. What would have been easier was to just accomodate my needs at that moment - a simple cleaning with no co-pay and you can set me up for the larger cleaning down the road. All-in-all, I didn't even get the cleaning. I decided to leave based on principle, not even over the price of the co-pay. A quick call to my insurance carrier and I had a new dentist all ready to go. This place is super hard to find if you dont have one of those fancy smancy GPS things. I printed out google maps directions, which were correct, but the damn building doesnt have its address on it! This is my second review for Horizons Dental. I had read the other reviews and mistakenly though the other negative reviews were about the receptionist, Maria. Those negative reviews and this 'warning review' are about the real problem there, the office manager and dentist's wife, Maria. Problems with manager Maria from the start; 1. My son was eligible a deep cleaning by our carrier, Delta Care, every six months. The office scheduled the appointment for the week before the six months was up. He had it done and they charged us for the procedure and an additional $200.00 for a 'medicinal rinse'. The medical rinse is not covered by Delta Dental, and unnecessary. He has had the procedure done without the $200 rinse several times since. 2. My wife's next appointment was cancelled and she found she had been dropped the day before the appointment was made (by the receptionist Maria). Manager Maria's reason, I quote, "I don't feel comfortable having her as a patient". 3. This year, 2021 they cancelled my wife's and then my teeth cleaning appointments and had Delta reassign us to another office without our consent or knowledge. Again, both after the receptionist had reconfirmed both appointments. If you don't want to: a. Wait outside a locked office door for 20 minutes after your 1:00 p.m. appointment. b. Have scheduled teeth cleaning appointments done by non Dental Hygienist. c. Listen to hard sells for 'supposed' needed dental work that is not covered by Delta Dental. d. Be ignored (calls not returned) when trying to resolve issues that are very costly. Then find another office to have your families dental needs taken care of. All one and five Yelp reviews are a signal of problems to come. A consistent comment seems to be "If I could give this practice 0 stars, I would." So would every member of my family. read more

Very bad experience. New to area and looked for dentist. Came here as takes my insurance and nearby. Kept waiting for long time and then had simply the worst clean I have ever had. Literally two minutes as opposed to the 20-30 mins I have had for past ten years. All my teeth still exactly the same as went in. The actual dentist suggested that I have a 'deep clean' which the insurance does not cover. I note another Yelp review above and I, too, was being told that my old fillings will need replacing. I'm at an age where I am finding that I didn't know what I was missing till I find it. First, it was finding a doctor at Kaiser who treats me like a person first and patient second. I love having him show me videos of his toddler's progress every time we have an office visit. Now there is Horizons Dental and Dr. Dale. Perhaps it is because we share the same alma mater, UC Santa Cruz, but here, too, he treats me like a person first and patient second. He just did the first steps of replacing seven filling-riddled teeth with new crowns, a totally painless process that is leaving me with a smile I haven;t seen since I was a kid. Everyone who works there is a family member, which I like a lot. Yesterday I watched the interaction between Dr. Dale and his dental assistant during the process: they were attuned to each other like old family members who like and respect each other because that is what they are. It never occurred to me how satisfying it can be to have a dentist walk you to the door, first stopping to show his wife what he has done; I find it rewarding to do business with people who take pride in their work. Never having experienced it before, I also like it that he calls the next day to see how you are doing with his work. If I were going to put it simply, it just feels so much more warm and natural than what I have gotten used to over the decades. it's hard for me to rate dentist visit positively... it's almost like an oxymoron. dentist visit = panic attack :-S dr. yuan made the visit pretty painless. i had scheduled an early morning appt to get 2 fillings. apparently they were shortstaffed and were running behind however i didn't even notice. dr. yuan is a good dentist- plain and simple. i've had other dentists in the walnut creek area push 'additional necessary' procedures... however for the first time in 3 years dr. yuan was the first dentist who didn't 'push'. i think i finally found my dentist :-D read more

I recently had an appointment at Horizon Dental for a basic cleaning a check-up. During this visit, I was extremely unhappy the treatment and lack of time I received. I was asked to sit in one of the rooms while Dr. Yung finished up with another patient. After 45 minutes, Dr. Yung finally appeared at my door. He spent about 2 minutes looking over my teeth, exclaiming that I had excellent oral hygiene and that my teeth were great. I was a boring specimen for him to examine. He then told me that the hygienist was taking out the garbage, so he would clean and polish my teeth. He hurried through the procedure paying no attention to the task at hand. I assume Dr. Yung was eager to end his day, as the appointment, although scheduled for 4pm, did not begin until about 4:50pm. I walked out of the office with teeth that did not feel any cleaner than if I had brushed them myself at home. I was seen for less than 15 minutes total in such a rushed manner, even flossing my teeth was overlooked. I was very disappointed in the service provided at Horizon Dental in Walnut Creek and will be taking my business elsewhere. read more
