My food was packaged with so much care, precision, and pride--it was neat, organized, and handled like it actually mattered. That alone told me everything about the level of service in that building. Candalen--YOU DID THAT. The attention to detail on my plate did not go unnoticed. You treated my food like it was being served in-house, and that speaks volumes about your work ethic and pride in what you do. Aaron--listen... that peach lemon drop??? BABY. That was my first time trying one and it was EVERYTHING. Smooth, flavorful, perfectly balanced--you made that drink an experience all by itself. I will be back JUST for that. I have been telling my friend about how satisfying and delicious the food at Horn BBQ is, but every time we came by the restaurant was closed. Finally, we were so excited to see it was open on a Saturday an we came in for lunch. To order you need to scan the QR code and pay plus tip before a single person spoke to us or offered us service. From the menu we saw they were out of beef ribs, smoked chicken, rib tips, no peach cobbler, no banana pudding and no kool aid. I come for their brisket and my friend loves ribs so we went ahead and ordered combo plates to share. Mine was the brisket with a side of collard greens, she had the pork ribs, a hotlink with a side of Mac-n-cheese, & cornbread. For drinks we had lemonade and an Arnold Palmer. I'm not sure what has happened over the last few months but the quality of the food, the service and the expectation to pay and tip up front were very disappointing. The greens, Mac cheese, brisket and ribs were cold. The hotlink wasn't BBQ'ed it was pan fried. Everything tasted like warmed up leftovers and we will not return. For 2 of us to eat it came to $100 and we were not satisfi[[HIGHLIGHT]]ed. The dining room is an attractive space, it was completely em[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]pty. The staff was unclear about what we ordered, had to be told to bring our drinks, bartender is also working as server and apologized for his uncertainty. Extremely disappointed. Drove over 2 hours to try this restaurant, only to find it closed despite their hours being listed as open online, over the phone, and on the signage outside. As we were leaving, another couple showed up and had the same experience. I understand unexpected closures happen, but at least update your hours or post a notice so people don't waste hours driving out there. read more

Horn BBQ quality is not what it used to be. I got here 30 minutes after opening and there were items not available already such as Potato Salad, Beef Ribs, and Cornbread, some staples of BBQ. There was 1 person bartending, serving, and taking payments, felt bad for 1 person to be doing everything in the front. I am giving a lower rating for the food on this updated review. Ordered the brisket, pork ribs, hot links, pulled pork, mac & cheese, pit beans, slaw, and texas bread. The brisket was so tough and dry, would not order the brisket here again since this happened twice in a row! Love my briskets, but not when it's so dry and definitely needed way more salt. Spare ribs were tasty and well seasoned, Horn bbq has great pork ribs! The hot links were flavorful and juicy, another favorite at horn bbq. The pulled pork was soft and tasty, but had so much fat this visit. The pit beans are great, I think they might be cooking it in their bbq sauce so it pairs well with the meat. Giving this two stars because I am sick of wasting my gas money driving to this place and it's not open when it says it will be. I gave it 4 stars for food, because I have had a couple good meals from here, but ask me when the last time that was? I've been visiting and working in the East Bay for a long time and my husband loves bbq so I have to make sure that I save places like this for when we are eating together. Luckily I was able to sneak him out for a recent lunch and we are so glad we did. 'Twas excellent. Husband had a plate full of meat and coleslaw that he devoured. I don't think I can differentiate between the items besides they looked juicy and plentiful. I don't eat beef/pork so I opted for the chicken sandwich and decided to have something different than usual spicy offering and tried the honey butter dipped option. It was excellent. The chicken was hot, tender, falling apart and so tasty, I am glad I made that choice. I lapped up every bite along with my potato salad. We probably should have taken photos and I thought I did but guess not. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We really loved all of the photographs on the wall and having conversations about who they were and the time in their lives. My husband and I drive from Pittsburg here. They were out of brisket. The pulled pork sandwich was half fat half meat. They made my plate after I checked in with them*** The establishment was clean and the restaurant had an easy to order tablet. There's only one tablet so that can cause a line to form. They have a full bar which is also nice. THE FOOD: everything was delicious!!! The brisket definitely lives up to the hype and surprisingly I found my self craving the pulled pork more because of the Smokey and crunchy burnt pieces of crust. I ended up adding the spicy BBQ sauce that's at each table because it was the perfect amount of sweetness and spice. Ignore all the drama in other reviews - this is unquestionably excellent (competition quality) barbecue. Just go here and enjoy. Came in on a Saturday afternoon and had the brisket, pulled pork, ribs, cornbread, slaw and spicy sausage links. The brisket was the star of the show. Excellent bark and smoke ring and marbling/fat in all the right places. Cooked perfectly. The barbecue sauce is excellent as well - not too sweet. Ribs were also excellent. If I'm nitpicking, maybe a bit less sauce and slightly less cook. These were close to fall off the bone which is a little over for my taste, but I think most will enjoy exactly this way. Pulled pork was served in a container that kept it moister than if it was in a pile on the plate, which was nice. Good flavor. Sausage was a little loose for me and pretty spicy. Ate them with pickles and it was the perfect bite. Slaw was great - heavy mayonnaise but still tasty. Cornbread was fine - a bit dry and basic. I never got to eat at the original spot, so no comparison like other reviewers, who I guess are hoping to relive good old times. I had been looking forward to trying the acclaimed Horn BBQ and wanted to walk away with a glowing experience, but instead my visit was chaotic, lingering, and disappointing. I will attempt to buffer the situation by saying I visited at 6:30 PM on a Saturday evening which may not be "prime time" for receiving the best cuts of meat from a BBQ place but on the other hand, the food was available for sale and is thus fair game for critique and much of the disasters I witnessed was not food related. A group of us were next door at Sante Adairius and I excitedly told everyone I would grab dinner from the "reputable" Horn BBQ. I walked over and entered what appeared to be a bustling establishment but I soon realized it was an unorganized situation with severe understaffing and long food wait times. I walked in the restaurant and was met with a congregation of people at the front door. It was complete disorder; some were squeezing into the restaurant, others were exiting, and several were standing in place and looking around aimlessly. This was the main thoroughfare for entering / exiting the restaurant, and also the line for a self-ordering kiosk sitting on the bar top, in the corner. The kiosk was not an ideal location for queuing or enter / exiting traffic flows, and I imagine it was not suitable for the lone table tucked into a nearby corner with people hovering and bumping into their chair. I placed my order (3 Brisket Sandwiches, 1 small Mac & Cheese, 1 Baked Beans) and paid using the kiosk, which was actually easy and efficient to use. I grabbed a seat at the bar and waited for about 10 minutes. I noticed the bar was littered with used trays and cups from prior diners, needing cleared but there was one person behind the bar and they were clearly overwhelmed. She was responsible for making drinks for the restaurant, serving people sitting at the bar, assisting people with self-ordering, guiding people the pick-up delivery people, clearing dining room tables, helping dine-in customers choose a seat, taking food to dine-in customers, taking ringing up orders for dine-in customers, ringing up orders for bar customers, and on and on and on. The one other employee in "front of house" did little to lend support and kept disappearing to the back. She also appeared confused about how or what to do to help. After 10 minutes I told the bar person I would come back in a bit for my order. I did that twice more before the last time when I sat at the bar a bit longer and the "other employee" shouted my name and handed my bag. I was glad to finally get out of that chaos! We opened the food boxes and were greeted with large and tasty looking sandwiches. Unfortunately we soon discovered out the meat on them was a combination of tough, stringy, and fatty. The chunks of fat definitely should not have been served and the tough, stringy pieces required several minutes of gnawing to break down. Sigh. I was the only one that thought the Mac & Cheese was creamy and flavorful, but we all agreed the noodles were over cooked and lacked texture. We also all agreed that the beans were tasty but would have benefited from more cook time to soften up more. Oddly, I would return to try the rest of the menu. I do not think the brisket we had is representative of what they generally serve, and I love brisket so I would try them again. Would also like to try the ribs, sausage, burger and other menu items. Went on Friday night because on their website they offered a great coupon for $30 off, so we decided to take advantage. Arrived about 5:30 PM and it was actually empty. Bartender was on her phone, took several seconds to greet us because she was looking at her phone. Not great first impression, but she ended up being pretty cool, so she redeemed herself quickly. Another woman (owners wife?) lurked around for a while, almost "monitoring" the bartender, little off putting. I know what it's like to have a manager hovering, judging and commenting, so I kinda felt for the bartender. But in the end both women were cool and ran the restaurant. It also filled up quickly within 20 minutes, then by 6:30 it was packed. Ordered a lemon drop, it wasn't too bad. It was happy hour so the well lemon drop was only $10. The food was what we came for and it wasn't much to write home about, and that makes me sad. Most everything was WILDLY too salty. Even the chicken strips?!? Why chicken strips?? I LOVE collard greens, especially spicy ones. These were just salt. Not much flavor, except salt. Brisket wasn't bad, probably the best thing we got, just a little pricy for 1/2 lb. Beans weren't too bad, but again, little salty. I didn't try the Mac n cheese, but my friends said it was pretty good. The BBQ sauce sits on the table, one spicy, one regular bottle. I only tried the regular and it was also good. I don't know if I'll come back. There's a spot on Alameda island (Fikscue) knocking brisket out of the park right now, so if I'm craving I'll head there. My crappy meal took an hour and 45 to receive, I had more than twice the value of the items purchased stolen from me via their shady pay at the counter scam and I nearly missed the show at the Fox. Horn is back! Devastated for Chef Horn and his entire operation after the fire last year. I love BBQ and enjoy trying it all over the country. Horn really stands out. With the recent news of reopening, I told my husband all I wanted for Mother's Day was Horn brisket for lunch. We arrived just after they opened and found a short line barely trickling out of the door. The space is beautiful! We ordered quickly and sat ourselves. With a very inviting full bar I asked a friendly gentleman checking on folks if there was a cocktail menu. He said he'd do whatever he could to make whatever we wanted. Within minutes we had two great drinks; a mimosa and a mule. Food was ready quickly and we dug in. We shared 1 pound each of brisket and pulled pork, mac and cheese and slaw. We were instantly reminded how much we'd missed these flavors! The meat - just, perfection. The brisket is sliced thick, tender, juicy with an incredible pepper bark. I do miss the outdoor dining and the larger, communal tables. The tables are mostly 2-tops which become crowded quickly with cups, plates and trays. We really enjoyed our meal and dining experience (and our 1.5 year old had his first brisket!) Other diners were friendly and happy, staff seemed to be operating nicely together and managed a consistent flow of people. We saw a consistent line but never more than 6-8 people. My boyfriend really likes bbq but this spot wasn't worth the wait. We waited 50 minutes for our brisket, burnt ends, smoked turkey, Mac and cheese, and banana pudding. My favorite things were the banana pudding, the bbq sauce, and some parts of the meat. For $61, I wish the food was better. Next time I want a Mac, I'll head over to home room instead. You line up outside to order. When they're taking your order, you can tell them dine in or take out. I'm not sure if you can just sit down right away to dine in. I've been meaning to try the new incarnation of Horn since it opened. I used to be a devotee of the original location on Broadway, back when the lines were long and the scent of smoking meat surrounded the building. The new location on 8th Street places it next to Sante Adairius places it next to one of my favorite beer spots in Oakland. The street also has a number of solid restaurants nearby, and within a 1-2 block radius. I liked the location even when it was Matty's Old Fashioned. As Horn BBQ, it's good. Everyone should have the brisket at least once. The order comes with a mix of lean and juicy, and a container of barbecue sauce that will last through your order but leave you wanting more. The service was perfect. The hot link was a little dry, but flavorful. I had enough BBQ sauce to dip it in, which was delicious. The Mac N Cheese was not a hit for me. There was a kind of smoke flavor throughout that pushed the cheese sauce more toward nacho cheese pour-over sauce than I expected. My boss took me out for lunch here since he said it's a good BBQ spot. I decided to trust his judgment since he often visits Texas for their BBQ. Unfortunately, I did not think it was good at all. I ordered the brisket, hot links, and mac and cheese. The brisket was super fatty and chewy. I'm okay with fatty brisket, but it did melt in your mouth. The hot links tasted like it was made in house since they had a distinct crumbly texture that I did not like. If you love hot links, do not get this. The mac and cheese, however, was delicious. As others have said, the meat is dry. I went for it anyway. Funnily enough, seeing all their recent negative press made me crave BBQ. I thought perhaps the food wouldn't be impacted by the alleged legal and financial disputes. And maybe it's not, maybe it's just because they switched locations. Idk. I got the 1/2 lb of brisket and a small mac and cheese side. The brisket was pretty flavorful but DRY. The BBQ sauce is fine. You get some raw sliced onions and a quarter sliver of a pickle with it; I didn't try those. The mac and cheese was average a little too cheese product gooey. I actually like cheese sauce nachos and processed cheese as much as I like the fancy stuff, but both dishes were giving food court, without the prices. I got it as takeout but did try it within about 10 minutes of getting it so I don't think that's a factor. There were about three tables seated while I was there. No wait to order and food took about 7 minutes. Spacious interior and comfortable decor. Really nice staff. Glad I tried it, wish I tried it when Horn was still in its heyday. Hopefully they'll see better days again and I'll give it another shot then. read more

Came to Horn because I seen people review it online and said it was good. I came on a weekday around 6pm. Wasn't busy at that time and staff there were nice! There is a bar and a good amount of seating. Unfortunately they were sold out of a lot of things I wanted to try so that was a bummer. The items we did try were just okay. Nothing stood out and for the price that was disappointing. The one thing that stood out were the beans! I thought they were just a bit too sweet but they were good. read more

I happened to be in the area and thought that I'd look them up. I know there has been a lot of "mess" with them, so I'm glad that he had a place to reopen, but this new experience is OK, but below what I'm used to experiencing when I had to wait in a line out the door to place my order. I'm glad that I did, but the food and scene at their previous place, while gone will be sorely missed. Maybe, he's getting his stride here, but this place is quite different. I really liked what I got - the brisket was good, the pickle, looked like it had a bite taken from it (seriously) but it was good were the hits. The misses were the raw onions - I liked mine bathed in a vinegar bath and the sticky wings, which tasted like they'd been dipped in molasses. Now, I'm a southern girl and I love molasses, but for meat, it has to have another something - flavor, essence to go with it and this one was missing that. They have a full bar, but at 3 in the afternoon, it was a bit early to imbibe. They only seemed to have soda and milkshakes, neither of which I wanted. The desserts were the same, which meant that I wouldn't want them. I ordered some sides and the larges, now come in a smaller plastic container, so I don't know. The people in there were super friendly. The inside was beautiful and looked welcoming, although I did have a challenge finding a chair to sit in that wasn't dirty. That should not have been so much of a challenge. I asked about the hot BBQ sauce and got some which made my day. The brisket was good and the cause with it was great! In the past, they were my first Uber Eats order and I was so happy. I ordered a couple of more times for the privilege of eating their food. I don't know that I would place an order today though. Back then, the packaging was too big and too much for my smallish orders, but they were fine. But now, the packaging isn't as sturdy as before and my food box opened as I was walking to my car. Hmmm. Also, the food didn't seem to have the same heart. I wanted a flavored hot sausage, but they only had the regular one. Some of the flavored ones were coming soon, but I was trying to get in, get my grub and bounce. I won't say that I won't be by again because it is a possibility. Ordered a brisket sandwich and Mac n cheese. After paying nearly $30 it wasn't worth it. Decent portion but the brisket was very dry and needed to be soaked in BBQ sauce. The sauce had good flavor though. Mac n cheese was overcooked and cold. The noodles didn't have any bite to them and it was just mush. Flavor was just okay. Overall, overpriced for the value. I spent a little over $30 for 3 ribs, mac and cheese and coleslaw. The ribs were tasty (best part) but they were cold. The Mac and cheese was so salty, like beyond edible. I left more than half. If they calm it down with the salt I think it would have a good flavor. The coleslaw was just shredded cabbage with salt, pepper and mayo. Nothing special and not flavorful. Save your coins and just buy the ribs. Don't bother with the overpriced and not edible sides . read more

Overall, I'm very impressed. Highly recommend. I will definitely go back again. The brisket: To me, the outside was slightly peppery. And the inside was very tender, and juicy with a hint of smoky flavor. I thought the fat is well-rendered, and therefore enhancing the overall flavor and moistness, making each bite melt in your mouth with a balance of textures and deep, smoky notes. This was my mom and my first time going to Horn BBQ. We went on a Sunday, so it wasn't too crowded, though there were a few people around. We ordered a pound of brisket, ribs, mac 'n' cheese, and potato salad. Seriously, the brisket was so good - the way it melted in your mouth made me want more! We even ordered extra to take home for the next day! The restaurant was a very clean and had a chill vibe. Surprisingly, we happened to meet the mother of Matt Horn of Horn BBQ. She was so kind and welcoming, and even offered us a free sample of her homemade banana pudding, which was so delicious! We'll definitely be coming back for more! read more

After seeing some online reviews and videos, we had to check Matty's out. The burgers did not disappoint. We had a Matty's burger and Classic Matty's burger. Both were delicious. Hot, juicy and flavorful. They lived up to the hype. The fries cost a star. They seemed to be frozen and not fresh made. We had hoped to try the onion rings but it was a weekend at lunchtime and they were not available due to the brunch menu. We also had a strawberry shake and chocolate malt shake. Very good. Service started out great, but once we got our food there was nothing until we got the bill. Cool interior, parking can be difficult. The lot next door was pricy. We hoped to come back and try brunch, as those around us with brunch items looked really good. As of today this location is now the home of Horn Barbecue. I've heard some of the popular Matty menu items may still be available. If so, I recommend the burgers. We will be back for some good Horn Barbecue. read more
