Pork Ribs, Brisket, Mac And Cheese

Restaurant seems very casual. Parking isn't the easiest but manageable. The owner was working the register and was super friendly with the family that was ordering while I was waiting. My interactions were limited. I ordered my food (2 meat plate, brisket (fatty), ribs, Mac and cheese, corn bread) to go as I was grabbing it on my way home from errands. It smells delicious. Very smoky. I had high hopes. I live no more than 15 min from the restaurant. When I got home and went to plate myself a serving, I was instantly so sad. The brisket was so dry that even the bbq sauce didn't do much. The ribs have a very nice smoke flavor, but not much else. The Mac and cheese didn't have much of a sauce on the noodles. The cornbread tasted like it may have been made from a lemon cake mix, fluffed up with cornmeal. Maybe try different things if you go. As it seems like people generally love the place.

Some of the most amazing BBQ experiences that I have had! The food was absolutely incredible so juicy tender and the portions are massive for the price point. Staff was so nice and fast with everything recommending some perfect items great place to have dinner.

My friend asked me if this place was good and I said YES! I came here from the yelp event, and the brisket was a standout. A well flavored brisket at that! He came here for the brisket cheese fries which he enjoyed, it also came in a large portion. Also the fried pickles is a must try side. It was a little saltier than I remember but still good.

Man loook just come down here and try them out the food is insanely good just off the one meal I have I'll be coming back everytime I'm over here at the beat shop and more. You get a hefty amount of food to eat from and in a Togo box as well so I can take it with me when I'm done. Go in and talk to the owner it's well worth it we had a good chat and it made me want the food even more as well as the respect and enjoyment of a friendly vibe. Also the meat is very tender and juicy meat Come enjoy the food and get a warm welcome while you're here! It's worth it!

Cozy counter-order spot with a robust menu. Ordered the 2 meat combo with ribs and brisket and it was enough food to feed two! Ribs were delicious - juicy and tender. I'm not a fan of the teeny tiny chopped up brisket - I much prefer the slices, but it was okay. Not a lot of huge flavor and a tiny bit dry, but once you pour BBQ sauce on it - it's nice and tasty! The Mac n cheese is your standard BBQ fare, not watery, not too creamy. Noodles cooked perfectly and not overdone. When they say the collard greens are delicious ... the collard greens are delicious!!! We inhaled this!! Also ordered the cornbread which definitely paired really well with the meal since you don't get bread with the combo. I believe the man who took my order was the owner - friendly service and patient as I looked through the menu and asked questions. I prefer this place than the other popular place in Castro Valley - just sayin!

The brisket cheese fries were heavy but also insanely good!

Was in the mood to mix it up a bit and decided to come to BBQ with the kids. It seemed legit so we ended up leaving with much more than what we planned. The owner Tim is the very definition of character and I hope if you get here you'll get a chance to banter with him. He's got that Arkansas charm turned on and will regal you with tales of his buddy from the military, a proper Cajun man who passed on some of the recipes for the sides. He would not reveal what meat he used to smoke and it may just be kept simple and smoked with charcoal. Brisket Cheese Fries: This was the star of my meal though I would eat something this heavy only a couple times a year. Delicious crispy fries topped with house made bbq sause, queso, and brisket. We let a couple sitting near us try a bite and they immediately went and ordered the same thing. Ribs: Kids liked this, they were delicious and didn't "fall off the bone" which is good. If its that tender its overdone. I thought they were slightly underdone and not soft enough, could use some more smoke flavor as well. Brisket + Pulled pork: These were also underdone and slightly tough. Both could have used more smoke and more time or less heat. Collard Greens: Only have had them this good in New Orleans and Georgia. If you want to try proper Collard Greens that should not exist like this in Cali this is the place to go.

I've been wanting to try this place for a long time and been keeping an eye out on the reviews, and most of the reviews I read was that the meat is dried and has no flavor. Well now that I have tried I totally agree. I got the 2 meat combo with briskets and ribs for $39 plus tax. The brisket was so dried I couldn't eat it. Almost like beef jerky. The ribs weren't much better. Both had no flavor. This combo came with Mac & Cheese and greens, Mac & Cheese was a lil dried as well. The greens were the only thing I finished eating from the expensive combo meal. I came in on Wednesday at noon and the place was empty, not one customer.

It's tucked in the corner in case you drive in and expect a huge sign. It's to the left of the car electronics shop. I always go to that grocery store but I didn't know it was there until we yelped coz we wanted to try another barbeque place. - We came an hour before closing so parking was easy. - Cashier greeted us wearily so we (4 of us) decided to take the food out because we felt not welcome for coming in so late. - Place was okay, but didn't check closely coz I was distracted with the college finals game on the big TV. - We ordered 1lb tri-tip, 2lb brisket, 2 mac&cheese, fried pickles, fish & chips, and brisket fries. I was really disappointed with everything. Tri-tip & brisket were dry and no flavor. Good thing they gave lots of barbeque sauce. Pickles very sitting in oil in the container. They didn't wait for the oil to drip lol! Had to toss that out. Mac&cheese was measly, and pasta overcooked! So that was the discussion in the kitchen that I saw! They only had enough for one serving and they divided that into 2 boxes lol! I would have not mind if they said they only have one serving of mac&cheese left instead of being deceitful about it. Just this dishonesty merit this 1 star, or none if I can. Fish&chips was meh, had to dip it in tartar sauce. My family had a terrible dinner. We do NOT recommend, even to try, this place.

Living in Fremont 30 years now it's been really hard to find good BBQ. So since I lost the bet on the Pacers Knicks series, I had to take my friend out to lunch. The location was Fairly easy to find you walk in and it's very open with tables on the left and your food counter on the right . Friendly service was patient and explained the dishes and combos.. The owner was there and very friendly, helpful and clearly proud of his restaurant. I ordered Osumi combo with brisket and pulled pork. The brisket was maybe a little bit dry but both had good flavor. I got the smoked potato salad but preferred my potato salad a little bit sweeter. Same with the beans they were more Texas style then sweet barbecued beans. My friend got the brisket and ribs. I even ordered a rack of ribs to take home. I'll post on those later after I eat them for dinner tonight. They give you plenty of food by the way.

Loved this spot! The brisket fries were so tasty perfectly cooked and full of flavor. I really liked that you can choose your BBQ sauce level (mild, medium, or hot), which made it even better. The service was excellent too very attentive, checked in on us, and even asked if we wanted more BBQ sauce. You can tell they care about the customer experience. Definitely will be back to try another meal!

Tried this place a few days ago and am so sad that I'm from out of town. I had the sandwich meals w two sides and I loved the cornbread and Mac n cheese. The brisket sandwich is not dry as people have previously reviewed so maybe things have changed up. I didn't catch the owner's name but he was really fun to talk to. Inside the restaurant was some funny signs too.

The South Smokin BBQ Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - The South Smokin BBQ

    Is the meat halal?

At this time, our meat is not certified halal. We understand this may be important to some of our guests, and we appreciate your understanding.

Do they use gluten free seasonings in their sauces/rubs (safe for a celiac)?

In the rubs no gluten, in the BBQ sauce. Mild, medium and hot BBQ sauce has gluten!

Just wanted to let you know...when I search your restaurant on my iPhone maps it still shows your old address on "B" street?

If you use the Yelp app to give you directions, it takes you to the right place.

Hello! Do you cater? And what is the pricing?

Yes we cater but u have to call because we cater a few different ways

Are you going to sell your 1/2 chicken again? I check so much but you no longer list it on delivery menu. Poor me! It was so good!

Thank You So Much but we were not selling enough to make a profit and the smoked chicken has to be thrown away, the next day it’s dry, no body was buying the $5 chicken sandwiches? Please if u can come up with a way I can make a little profit let me…

Does your menu change everyday or weekly? Can fries be ordered without cajun seasoning? TIA!

Yes we change our menu! Yes you can order the fries without Cajun sauce.

    Any gluten free options?

Yes sir, just about all of it is Gluten free! Just ask without bun.

Are the pork ribs only seasoned with a rub and no glaze on them before / after cooking it?

Yes sorry I just use a rub. No glaze

Do you do on site barbecue catering?

Yes I did until now because my daughter and her boyfriend are going back to Arkansas until January 2022, so the only way I can do on site bbqing is if I can find some great people in my near future.

    Is this place open?

I’m sorry right now I’m closed. But I’m signing a contract and should be open within 2-3 weeks at 400 W Harder rd. Hayward.

Are you only open 1 day out of the week now? Also i saw multiple addresses. Which is the most current one?

I’m sorry Robin, right now I’m looking for a place. I’m not open at all? I think I have a place but we will see!

    Do you offer catering?

    Yes we do, $22 a head 25-50. 20 a head 51-100.

    Where are you located today?

We r located in Brews and Brats. 1061 B St. Hayward 94541

In Livermore?? We are in Hayward today & looked to yelp for a good place to eat, saw this The South Smokin BBQ but it's addressed on B Street??? In a bar place.

Yes we are located in Brews and Brats.

Where are you this weekend? We've been going back to the winery in Livermore the past few weeks and haven't found you?

We are at 1061 B St. Hayward, we r inside Brews and Brats. We own the restaurant now

    Where can I find them?

They sometimes change locations, it's best to check on Yelp to see where they're at or call. I usually call

Is this place open till 9pm? Yelp says 9pm and site says 7:30pm?

He is a street vendor and is at many local breweries or wineries around town.

I truly believe that there is potential here, but a lot of things would have to change. When you walk in, BBQ is not the first thing you smell. I'm the type that if you can smell the BBQ when you get out of the car, it's probably about to be pretty dang good. I got all the way into the restaurant and it was just a vague smell... not necessarily bad, but not necessarily food, either. * The Mac n' Cheese recipe needs to be re-thought and revised. It was watery, tasteless and not what you would expect from a black owned business. * The cornbread is expensive and not given as sidecar to your sides. I'd rather pay a little more for food overall when I buy a plate and get cornbread than have to ask for and purchase a side of cornbread. As far as taste, if I wasn't eating it with the greens, it wouldn't have been very good standalone. * I had the rib plate.... No rub in sight, not even the slightest hint of salt and pepper coating. It was almost like the ribs go straight from package to smoker, no process in between. They seem to take the angle of drowning them in sauce, which is overly tangy seems like a bulk purchase sauce, rather than a house made sauce. BBQ sauce is too simple to make to not hone in on your own sauce recipe. The ladies who plate the food chop the ribs in half as a means to fit them into the carton, but to be honest, I don't wanna see or taste pigs marrow when I'm eating my ribs. Ribs were also very dry and over-charred... a few pieces. * The greens were the best thing on the whole plate to be honest. * Lastly, the hot sauce packets were puffy and swollen, which is never a good sign. Never seen that before until I came here. Also, I asked for extra BBQ sauce and was told that would be an extra charge..... this was already a tip off that they don't get a lot of business and now they're at the "nickels & dimes" point of their day-to-day operations. All in all, it just seems like the labor of love has been lost on this place, as it was recommended to me by someone who says it was good years ago. While that might be true, it seems the family has gotten too comfortable with their neighborhood regulars to keep the doors open and the quality is slipping as the month and years pass. If you're reading this as the owner, I hope this is a motivator for you to restructure and re-brand so that you become a "line out the door" business, because in today's climate, it only takes one influencer to enter your doors and call your food "certified" or "trash" for YouTube, IG, Twitch etc.. Be brave and make changes.

I didnt want to deal with a crowd and when I went, it was perfect. We were seated right away. Our service was Yanira and she was awesome. So friendly, answering all of our questions. I got the ribs and meat meal since I also wanted to try their chopped pork. My sides were Mac and Cheese and Tater Tots. When my order came, I got their special fries and before I could even say anything, another server came with a bowl of my tater tots apologizing for the mistake. No complaints here since I got another side. Everything was delicious. The ribs were tender. I also loved their BBQ sauce. I was going to order water, but since it was a special occassion, i ordered a Dr. Pepper and I was surprised that it came in a large mason glass jar. The Dr. Pepper wasn't peppering.....if you know you know, it just didnt taste strong, but I did enjoy that the drink was ice cold. They dont have coke, but serve pepsi products. The cornbread was perfection, warm and buttery. Disclaimer, the Mac and Cheese had corn in it, just stating if you care about that sort of thing. It was more on the saucy cheesy side. I never had Mac and Cheese like that, but since I love Mac and Cheese and I love corn so it was hit in my world. Portions are huge and I had to take some food home. Prices seem comparable to other places that serve BBQ. Lots of seating areas and I can see on special occasions or on the weekends, this place could get packed. Plenty of parking. This restaurant is off Winton, in the area where Panera is at. If you go all the way to the mall you have gone too far. I know that I will be coming back, I am curious to try their burnt tips. They have a loyalty program. You can sign up before, it is simple, or sign up there as you are eating.

I'm gonna check with my NorCal moots about this but sucks if that's true. I was going to comment on how this is one of few bastions of affordable, slightly more unique food in the bay area, but I guess that's not the case. I'm spoiled by having a Dollar Hits in SoCal literally down the street from me so I can't say this place compares, but it's at least an option for NorCal, you know? This definitely used to be another restaurant, but then retrofitted to be a grill. Super large grill in the middle for everyone to communally cook at indoors. This is a good combination between the outdoors grill it yourself and the indoors seating of both the SoCal Dollar Hits, so I thought that was nice. They have all the classics here, isaw (sometimes Dollar Hits doesn't have this unless you request -it's chicken intestines), large intestines, chicken skin, kwek kwek (battered quail eggs), and Tender Juicy bright red filipino hot dogs (a must). You can also order a side of rice and the sauces were self serve (made it a bit sticky). It gets a bit smoky in there even with the fans, but overall had an enjoyable time the time when I did visit.

The ribs were super tender and the BBQ sauce is just different, in a good way. Hard to explain but it's one of those you don't forget. Staff was friendly and quick, no issues at all. My pictures really don't do it justice. If you're in the mood for ribs and solid sides, this spot is always a good call.

You know, this has been my goto place for many years and the quality/service has slowly declined in…read morethe last 5 years. I brought my brother here this morning for veterans day as I didn't want to compete with other places/the crowds for free meals and would rather pay than deal with crowds. It was a mistake today. There was lies/lipstick prints on my glass a few months back, but Inlet that go. We ordered 3 entrees, 3 mimosas and got %15 off the bill for the issues so the bill was $93. We didn't ask for a discount/free food and only to let them know about the issues and to get boxes to go. I still tipped $13 although we were there for maybe 15 minutes total, and let the waitress know we didn't blame her and just wanted to advise of the bugs and get our food to go at that point. I think it was more than most would do in the same situation. I've been loyal to this place for over 12 years, but today was the first and worst here. I'm a federal employee that's part of the shutdown and hasn't been here in a few months. The food is a bit different, the servers are different, there were a lot of flies in here today and I saw a baby cockroach(shown in the photo. I had to get up & kill it before it reached our table) on the wall by our table. The place has always looked like it could be not the most clean, but I've never seen flies like this, lear alone roaches. I tried to overlook this all today, but my brother was uncomfortable eating here. He didn't like the flies and the roach crawling next to home was too much for him. The waitress blamed the roach and flies on the open side door (It's never been open on previous visits), but it was clear to me the place officially had a roach problem today. I had to ask for to go boxes 10 minutes after receiving the food because we couldn't stop thinking about the roach Their food is still good, although different(smaller portions/not the same quality than before) than before (Not sure if there has been a change in ownership/staff in the last few months). I hate to say after frequenting this place for more than 12 years I may not be back after this experience.
