My off-season visit to Horseneck Beach was a blast. No crowds, wild and rough surf, and the very reasonable warning not to mess with the dunes. Walked the beach and encountered locals with their well-trained dogs. The place was spotless, no trash and no broken glass. From the beach I found great places for breakfast, lunch, and dinner north on Route 88 about 15 minutes away. For those seeking potential snow on the beach (thank you, Taylor), this would be perfect.

I was here back in May to run the Horseneck Half Marathon. Race participants were directed to part on the western end of the main parking lot. I wasn't sure if runners needed to pay for parking. I didn't see anyone paying at the kiosks, but boy did it look pretty pricey especially for those with out-of-state plates ($13 vs. $40). After running around Westport, the finish line was just in front of the Horseneck Beach Main Office/Lifeguard Headquarters. Although the closest that I got to the sand was when I was running along Beach Rd, I did see a lot of beachgoers enjoying themselves as it was quite unseasonably warm for the time of the year.

One of our favorite beaches near our home. Still not used to how rocky the beach is compared to what we're used to in California but so are all the others in Massachusetts. This place has a huge parking lot and parking costs $13 for the whole day. My kids love boogie boarding here and the waves are perfect for them.

Dropping a star. Due to beach erosion, there is very little sand at this beach anymore. It was near impossible to walk barefoot from the strip of sand by the dunes all the way to the waterline. Way too may rocks. I'm talking 50' of rocks. The lifeguard said they were trying to get a sand delivery.

Pretty nice beach I've been there many times. I do like the improvements they have made there making access easier between the parking lot and the beach itself also the method of paying is so much better now being able to park then pay at 1 of the parking ticket machines then just put it in your car on the front dash to show you paid. $13 for MA resident and $40 for out of state residents.. I would advice checking online before you go to ensure it's open because there has been times when it was closed because of a shark being spotted. Anyways enjoy.

This is a bang for your buck beach! A true local paradise. Facing the ocean, I walk far to the right. No lifeguards there but I am cautious and aware of surf and rip tides. There are rocks, as at most New England beaches, so pack beach shoes. Expect to find high quality beach glass. Red seaweed is intermittent. Beware of dive-bombing seagulls and avoid leaving food unattended! If you are lucky you will see newly hatched Piping Plovers roaming the shoreline and following them will be a State Park Ranger, as these birds are endangered species. Though handicap accessible, this might pose a challenging walk for some. (Surf chairs are available). I am a season pass holder and Horseneck is my home away from home.

Drove from Salem, Mass to see the sunset. Quiet and no charge to park if you go late in the afternoon. Go past the lifeguard beach if you're only walking and not in the waves. Not too many rocks at the shoreline, lots of shells, looks like a seal feasted nearby!!

Spent the day in Providence yesterday wandering around College Hill. We decided we needed to walk a beach and we ended up here at Horseneck. Great beach and the parking was free, we got there after 6:00 p.m. There is a bath house and outside showers. The beach was clean and the water was warm, although I hear it is usually cold. A nice ride with places to eat and get ice cream along the way.

Really pretty beach, but if you travel a little farther up the road, you'll hit Gooseberry Beach which is a much smaller portion of Horseneck Beach. Not everyone knows about it so it's a good place to beat the crowds. It also has TONS of marine life. Last time I went, we found two starfish just washed up on shore, plus tons of crabs and stuff like that.

Come on guys. How can people enjoy that?

I now remember why I stopped coming to this beach for a few years and I won't be returning. The beach conditions are abysmal. The beach is covered with rocks, many, many rocks and they aren't small ones but several large ones that make walking to the water really painful. If you try to go into the waters without sandals, you're brave. The water itself is pretty decent. Still pretty good waves like this beach is known but the rock problem ruined the experience. This is ridiculous, they should be able to remove those rocks. Most beaches are not like this and the pictures prove it.

Like some other beach clubs that I have visited, the general public is not allowed entry through the front gate unless someone sponsors you as a guest. I actually think that it keeps the atmosphere peaceful and relaxed with that type of guest control. Up until last summer, my father's family owned a house on the beach here, had a family membership that we all could enjoy and we strolled our guests beachside into the exclusive private club beach area. However, there is a small parking lot about a quarter mile up that has about five parking spots. Follow Acoaxet Road as if you were going to drive into the ocean. If you snag a spot, you can clamber over some rocks, walk to the right a few yards down to the beach club area and be treated to some truly unspoiled beach-going. The sand is unreal, sea glass amazing and the waters are crystal clear. The body surfing (or body boarding) here rocks!! If you go to the left of the parking lot, you can find the ruins of some of the mansions that were swept away in the 1938 hurricane. Only the staircases remain. Very cool. The beach club has the only restroom facilities. You can totally saunter up to use the lav (women to the left and men to the right) if you make it look like you know what you're doing. Phone service (all carriers) and GPS is spotty, at best, down here. One of the few times you might actually want to print a map. Great roads for road biking. It is truly pristine here.

I have been here twice; once for the beach and a second time for island hiking. The island is accessible by a man-made causeway connecting the mainland and the island over a sandbar that was used back in the day to originally gain entrance to this small piece of land. The island has a small beach with softer sand perfect for lounging around, catching some rays. The water is free from much seaweed and is great for small children as there are not many waves that come crashing into shore in this section adjacent to the parking lot. The lot fills up quickly in the summer months and it is recommended to get there early if you don't want to fight long and hard for a space to pull into. The rest of the shore is quite rocky but makes for some great shell and interesting rock finds. The remainder of the island is covered with thick, thorny brush. There is a main path that allows for hiking throughout the island. Of priority interest on the island is its history as a coastal defense installation; still seen today are a pair of WWII towers used for large artillery. Apparently there are other underground bunkers as well but they are mostly hidden by brush these days. Unfortunately, these structures are now covered in graffiti. It is very interesting to discover the history of this island's recent past. The island is open sunrise to sunset in the summer. Port-a-Johns are available for hikers and beach-goers... they are kinda disgusting (as most are) and never seem to have toilet paper so plan accordingly. Dogs are permitted on leashes. There is a boat launch available... I watched a couple people unload jet skis into the water during my time here most recently. Best of all... its free! If you're out early, pass by the parking fees at Horseneck beach and travel a bit farther down the road to visit this location!

We paid $30 cash for a weekday day pass as non-residents (July 2026). What a racket! There aren't any other parking options nearby either so just consider it the price of admission. To make it even more ridiculous, I believe they only accept cash or check, adding another layer of unnecessary silliness to the whole thing. Once you're on the beach though, it's absolutely gorgeous. The sand is soft, the water is clean and clear, and there are lifeguards on duty. It gets really busy with families but there's plenty of space to spread out if you come earlier in the day. The amenities are solid too. There are bathrooms, showers, changing areas, a concession stand, and when we visited there was also a Del's Lemonade food trailer. We came during a heat wave and the water was still cold so that tells you everything about the water temp. Overall, this was easily our favorite beach in the Newport area. If I had to choose between this and Easton's Beach, it's not even close. We'd come back here every time. Minus 1 star (should be 2) as the parking experience meaningfully detracted from the visit.

We did some of the Quansett Trail before seeing that it was a complete mud bog which equaled a double back to the Beach Loop Trail which did not have such terrain issues.
