I feel like i time warped into early 1900s! Just your average diner, but totally retro--and I don't mean flashy retro diner with all those neon lights either. I think it's a better place to go for breakfast. But we went for dinner and I ordered the club sandwich with coleslaw and potato salad. The club was pretty good--one of the best clubs I've had. They used real turkey meat carved off the bird. Normally restaurants use deli meats. But the coleslaw and potato salad were quite bland. I heart this place... I have to admit I was scared of it at first. Pretty sceney - but once you get past that, you will be very happy you did. Rich the bartender rules, and really I love that they have tall boys of PBR for like $1.75. The food is delish as well and I agree with Ty about the cheese fries, greasy amazingness. Dive bars don't get darker or funkier than The Ranch Room, nestled in the back of the Horseshoe Cafe, in the center of downtown Bellingham. They've got the cheap beer, but it's the potency of the cocktails that really defines the atmosphere...that, and the huge murals of cowboys and wagon-wheel chandeliers. The jukebox selection is excellent. No pool tables or live music, but that's OK. The Ranch Room is better suited to being a hide-out during bad weather, obnoxious college kids, and just about anything else that ails the mind or body. read more

A cool diner thats open 24 hours so you can stumble in any time and feed your late night hunger. A few friends and I stopped in and shared a patty melt and a ham and cheese sandwich. It was all satisfactory. The waitress we had looked as if she hadn't showered in a while and the place wasn't exactly sparkling but that's to be expected from a 24 hour diner in a college town. I love coming to the Horseshoe for breakfast or brunch. However, I will never be caught here for dinner or in the wee hours of the morning. It's unsafe,and populated by boozy panhandlers. Also the staff and cooks are vastly different depending on the time of day. Save yourself the headache and stick to daylight hours only. Be advised also that the bathrooms aren't recently renovated. I went to this restaurant Saturday morning and it was pretty good. I ordered the old fashioned which included eggs, a choice of meat, hash browns, toast or an up charge for a pancake. I am a vegetarian and was bummed out that I wouldn't have anything to substitute the meat option, but the server asked if I would like a vegetarian patty. Wow! That made my day. So when I received my food the portions were plentiful. It was enough for two people. I split my meal in half. I ate one half and took the other home for breakfast the next day. The vegetarian patty the waitress brought to me was a black bean patty. I have always wanted to try one. it was so delicious. My meal cost less than $10. I will be back in the near future. read more

Gave this place another shot. Sad I did! The service is poor to fair at best. It took over an hour to get our food. Yes, it was NY day, and our server said it would be "a bit longer " to get food, so we chilled understanding the circumstances. The excuse was 2 large groups in the bar area. I walked by and if you mean 7 total people as large groups, I need to bone up on my math skills. The food arrived only after I asked our server how much longer after waiting well over an hour. 90 minutes in total to wait for breakfast!!! Seriously? And the place was not packed. The food was nearly inedible, burned and tasteless! Our server didn't even inquire when she picked up our hardly eaten plates of food. The food and drinks are cheap. I usually get the cheesy hash after a night of drinking. Recently, I ordered the potato burrito to see how it compares to the one at Casa. For 3.95 you get a potato burrito that is as big but better tasting. They don't have salsa but they do have Frank's hot sause so order yours now bitches! read more

I really, really love the vibe of this place. Totally not pretentious, although the one waitress I've had gives these " can't be bothered" looks. Ate here a few months back and got the worst bland food. Paid for a steak and when I got the check, I was charged for a more expensive one. I told the waitress and she said you were all out of the original one and just charged me the extra $2. Then ASKED if I wanted her to cover it (with an attitude like it wasn't her fault). DUH. WTF? We ordered and we given high hopes that our food was going come out in a reasonable time due to the lack of people in the restaurant. We waited an hour and a half for our food to come. I personally ordered the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were burnt to say the least, and for a breakfast place it only make sense to use maple sausage to make the gravy. The service was poor and the waitress did not disclose that the gratuity tip was already included in the bill. Our party said we were paying with separate checks. A few of my friends unknowing tipped her on top of the gratuity tip. I was utterly disappointed by by the service and food from Horseshoe Cafe. Having never been to Bellingham I was excited to see a so called country bar in the back of this restaurant. Basing off of the antlers and cowboy decor I thought I found my home away from home. The dining room is classic and comfortable, it's not gaudy a la target or "trendy" and loud as hell like alot of the new spots. Every booth is comfortable, private and perfectly intimate. Don't eat here! My friend and I tried the place out. When we asked about pie, they only had one type... then we were told that they actually had two types, but she didn't reccommend the second because it was "about to go bad and they really should throw it out". We decided on nachos and salad instead. When I went to eat my side salad, it was extremely wilted and limp. I couldn't even take a bite. So, I decided to share my friend's nachos. The nachos were delicious and we got through about half of them before we found the hair in them... Also, service was slow (we only saw one waitress the entire time) and the restaurant was generally a bit dirty. The floor needed cleaning, and so did a number of tables. The waitress comped our food and seemed to feel really bad for what happened. She really wanted to get us something else, but we were ready to move on. read more

I've been in Bellingham for 5 years, and when I leave this town, I think the 'Shoe will be among one of the first few things I think about when I'm feeling nostalgic. Terrible, simply terrible. We waited over 20 minutes just for a server I finally bring us a menu, even though groups who walked in after us were served first. The server did not even bring a child's menu for the four year old with us. It was absolutely freezing inside and we had to go grab coats while we waited, and there were many dirty in-bussed tables. It took us over a half an hour to even get our good, which was semi cold. For the fact that there were ony a few other people the restaurant and four servers, it was completely rediculous the amount of time it took to receive a simple breakfast. I love the new shoe. There are some things to be missed from the old shoe but the new flavors are totally worth letting them go peacefully.
