3.9 out of 5, isn't how it felt when I visited the LaGrange store today. I was driving back home after leaving VA Hines Hospital visit. I was wearing all black with camouflage military slacks. That must of been where they started their stereo-typing, as I didn't look like I had money to spend from the LaGrange store. I walked the entire lighted footprint as I strolled past the sales desk twice. I took one more look in the area of the showroom with price tags averaging anywhere from $399 to $700 plus. My third approach near the sales desk, made me stop in my tracks with 3 sales people, one on the phone. I asked out loud to them all and asked them if they were on "commission". One lady wearing eyeglasses kinda under her breath stated "Yes". Then I stated that I was in their area of business for at least 15 minutes and NO ONE approached me or openly said Hello. As I continued past them, I said to them that I have $$$$ to spend but wasn't going to patronage them as didn't show any emotion to assisting me. I consider this a very poor approach to sales. read more

This is a high end hardware, lighting, patio, furniture, and grilling store. It's almost its own lifestyle brand. They should have their own. You can get just about anything for your home here. Bring your wallet, all name brand & cool. We all know cool costs. read more

Staff NOT FRIENDLY AT ALL yikes. No hello, we wandered around for awhile, not a single worker made eye contact. Btw we're Asian- they ONLY acknowledged Caucasian folks, pretty obviously rude! We won't return. Two thumbs down. I expect more from LaGrange yikes. We came by 330-4pm today Saturday 10.4.25, all staff present that day need SERIOUS training particularly in how to recognize ALL the other races/ethnicities that exist in their neighborhood/world. I arrived at 6pm after closing hours and instead of the Employee signing that the store was closed they just stared at me like I was an animal after I tried opening the door. It's not like there's an hours sheet or an open sign either. Hoping that a competitor opens a shop across the street thats open after 6pm after this experience. Two stores in one! The upper level is the Hortons Home Lighting, a massive display of about any kind of lighting fixture one could possibly imagine. The chains don't even come close. The lower level is a complete, full-service hardware store, operating under the auspices of the Ace Hardware franchise. Ace Hardware is also a rarity now, carrying Craftsman tools, which used to be widely available at Sears which is now near-defunct. I needed a warranty exchange for a hardly-used Craftsman ratchet wrench. There was NOWHERE else around that carries them anymore. Except Ace. So I schlep over. They did not have it in stock. I looked it up before I went and it was currently being sold. I did have to prompt the guy, asking if he could order it. So he goes over to his computer terminal, spends a few minutes and announces that, yes, he can order it. Fills out some paperwork, I go to the cashier, in a week I get a call that the item is in and a few days later go to pick it up. Easy and painless. All staff there very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended for hardware and Craftsman tools (such that they are anymore, now made in China). No other place around. If you do need a warranty replacement, do check its status online before going. Craftsman supposedly has a number to call for warranty replacement - but we all know how those call centers usually go. Plus likely having to pay out of pocket for shipping. read more

The store is Absolutely stunning and they have a myriad of lighting to choose from... the hard part was deciding which ones to get! Heather helped me and was fantastic! I ended up buying 3 pieces and I was really happy with the selection and service. I need small machine screws. Stainless steel ones. And in metric. I skip right to Horton's Ace Hardware. Not only was I helped right away when walking down the stairs, but they had what I needed and recommended some loc-tite, which I would have forgotten (and would have needed to make another trip). These people are fantastic. We've bought big stuff from them too... snowblowers, grills, and lighting. They have assembled things and delivered (quickly) - I don't recall paying an assembly or delivery fee, but could be incorrect... If I did it must have been quite reasonable. Staff has been fantastic every time that I am in there. This place is legit. There is the faint smell of fertilizer and grass seed at the bottom of the stairs. My one complaint is weekend hours. I wish that they were open later on Saturdays and Sundays. I'm guessing that not enough people share my wish or they would be. read more

Since my move to LaGrange last July, Hortons is my go to for a variety of house necessities. The lighting alone could draw you in. Whether it be electrical needs, paint, lightbulbs, I am glad to have this beautiful location in walking distance. The staff: ever helpful, educational, informative, prompt, positive attitude and overall a delight! Yesterday there was a very kind cashier, Sofia, conducting my misc. item purchase. My transition needed some assistance in regards to my ACE rewards and Michele was PROMT and happily assisted in competing the sales. I found myself at Hortons after being referred there by a number of people. I was having a difficult time making lighting selections for a current construction project and found the staff to be incredibly helpful and attentive. Within 30 minutes I was able to make my selections and have a quote printed for me to bring back to my contractor. When I logged on to leave this review I was shocked to see the one star left by "Albert M". Horton's is an asset to the community. It appears as if Albert created a Yelp account solely to sound off on how "annoyed" he was that a store was allowing customers to make their own choices when it comes to masks. I am going to go out on a limb here and assume Albert was wearing an N95 mask. He seems very knowledgeable on COVID protocols so one would expect him to be up to date on the newest science which tells us cloth masks do not stop aerosols. An N95 is personally protective--it's efficacy does not rely on the number of other people also wearing them. For Albert to try and harm the reputation of a local business is "disrespectful" and also selfish and arrogant. We are lucky any small businesses survived in the past two years. It certainly does not help a community to be attacking the ones that did. Perhaps Albert should find a new store to shop at or stay forever confined to his home placing his orders on Amazon. read more

I'm in the process of my second new build construction project, and Horton's is always my first stop for lighting and decor. I drive from the City to walk through their destination showroom in person. The staff is friendly, helpful, and always has great product knowledge to help me make my decisions. Their store is inspiring and always helps me with my design direction. I can't recommend Horton's enough if you are looking for lighting options for your home or business. read more

We ordered all of our outdoor lights from here. They were very helpful, and even though we ran into a few hiccups along the way, they had fantastic customer service, and they went out of their way to make sure things were right. Buyer Beware! Watch out for outrageous price gouging and poor customer service with long wait time for special order products. I'm all for supporting local stores as opposed to the Big Box retailers, but not to the tune of double the price. I went to Home Depot to find a special dimming light switch. They had just what I needed for $19.95, only it was the wrong color, I need white not almond. The next day I went to Hortons at lunch to view their selection. My hope was to find a light switch I liked even better, since they're a specialty light store. They have exactly the same selection as Home Depot (bummer). OK, I'll get the one I saw at Home Depot and they have white in stock (jackpot). Uh oh, time to checkout, Hortons price is double at $39.95. I told the special "lighting consultant" about the Home Depot price and asked for a price match. She said "no," they don't price match with Home Depot. Second story from years ago ... I bought a condo and I was looking for hanging pendant lights. After a long search at many stores I found what I wanted at Hortons. I needed them right away because the builder would do the installation before closing. I tried to order them, but they didn't carry that brand in stock and it's only available by special order. I was told a special order from that brand would take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. I assumed this was because it was made in some foreign country. I started to do a little research on the hanging pendant brand on the internets and found they are located right here in Chicago. I sent them an email explaining my situation and urgent need. They immediately wrote back and confirmed that the lights are special order only. They went on to say their factory is in Chicago and they can have the light made and ready for pickup within an hour. They were thoroughly confused by the 4 to 6 week wait quoted by Hortons. I ordered the lights and picked them up direct from the factory on my home from work that same day. I called Hortons and told the manager about this troubling situation. It was then explained that this special order wait is Hortons policy and they only do orders once a month or whenever they have enough to justify the order, hence the 4 to 6 week wait. In my opinion, that's not the best customer service. What have we learned? Hortons cannot compete with Big Box prices and they don't honor price matches. They are unwilling to provide the above and beyond customer service that typically justifies a price difference. read more

Horton's truly is a great place. They've been in business for over 100 years. I worked there for about 5 years in high school and college. And yes Elizabeth, Sue is awesome! Not only do they have a huge selection of lighting, they have an Ace Hardware store downstairs, and a home furnishings dept in the front. They also do a lot of great work for the community, including a cancer fundraiser started about 7 years ago - to date they have helped raise $3 million for cancer research! Shop at Horton's - for you city folk, they have a newer location on Clybourn that I believe is mostly lighting. And if you are doing new lighting in your whole house, inquire about their House Order program, you can get about a 20% discount on everything if you buy a certain number of fixtures/fans. I miss working there, the people are just awesome. Go, now. You can't go wrong with Horton's. read more

Fabulous place. Been buying light fixtures and other items from here for years. Very knowledgeable staff who really know lighting and design. I have never been disappointed. Broad selection of prices. Lights are returnable if they don't look good in your space when you get home although I have never had to do that. They also have all the fancy, cool bulbs available. With regret I right this review. I have been going to Horton for over 20 years in LaGrange. Most often I have gotten good customer service but the last time I called I must say I was so disappointed. I called the lighting department about a comercial project that I had to research. The person who answered the phone was too busy talking to a coworking to even greet me on the phone. After I was greeted and inquired about the product instead of asking me to hold while the information was researched the person again started a personal conversation and ignored me. I must say it is the most UNPROFESSIONAL experience I have had in a long time. My business went elsewhere that day. In today's economy one would think that service would be a priority and that the customer comes first. That is why this is getting a poor rating. Otherwise for the showroom area and checkout area the customer services has always been excellent. They have an extremely good selection of items and their fixtures are unique. read more

If you need lighting you need to come to Hortons. They have an amazing selection. No matter what your style is Horton's as it. They also have a smallish inventory of furniture. I don't think you will get a screaming deal here but I would much rather support this gem of local, independent business than a big box store. Downstairs is a large True Value hardware store so you can pick-up light bulbs for the spiffy new lamps you scored here. They have a large private parking lot which is a bonus in downtown La Grange. Also, the building itself was once a department store. That's my trivia tip for the day. Now go to Hortons. read more

Hortons used be known for their customer service. I bought a sale fixture with all the parts. The young man who helped me to the car failed to include the parts that connects the shades to the fixtures. I returned to Hortons.I had photo of fixture and the shades. I went to the lightning department and found the women to be not the least bit helpful and passive aggressive. They decided it was as is. This was not my mistake. I love this place. It's not your typical hardware store by any stretch. When you walk in you would expect to see tools, supplies, paint and hardware. Nope, They have a great selection of outdoor furniture, an incredible display of interior and exterior lighting. Candles, and other sorts of knick knack stuff. If you want the hardware you have to go to the basement. Well lit, super clean and organized. Staff is awesome. Out back are grills, plants, and planting supplies. It's a real treat. From the outside this looks like your typical Ace Hardware, but going inside you'll find it is not. They are an extensive lighting store with an Ace Hardware in the basement. I rode my bike here on a bright Saturday morning to buy a bike lock. I found one right away, paid for it and signed up for the rewards program that only asked for your phone number and address. I was compelled to look around at all of the beautiful ceiling and table lamps, Tiffany shades and garden furniture, there's a huge selection. Outside the store is a huge parking lot that they use to display barbeque grills and there's a greenhouse here for plants. The service was awesome and I found perennials on sale for 50% off, hurry. I use this store quite a lot for paint and supplies for my art projects, even tho I have another Ace closer by, I go out of my way to goto the La Grange store. We bought multiple lighting fixtures through our designer's store account. One had to be ordered because it was not in stock. I placed the order via phone (since we'd already been in the store). The store experience up to that point was good. Our lighting representative was responsive and we found exactly what we needed, including light bulbs. I received a call a week later that the light fixture was in. We were in the final week of our kitchen remodel, so I drove down on a Wednesday afternoon to get it (1 1/2 hrs round trip in rush hour)... only to find that it was the wrong fixture. One of the "assistants" in the department had incorrectly transcribed the numbers for the original order. Mistakes happen. They promised to rush order a replacement, since it's 7-10 business days for all orders. It was Wednesday afternoon. I didn't hear anything after that, so called on Friday afternoon about 6pm. Our lighting person was out, so Joe (the "manager") got on the phone with me. This is where our experience with Horton's went quickly downhill. I explained that I wanted an update on when we might receive the light, because our electrician needed to install it. Joe's tone for the entire call was dismissive and accusatory. How could I possibly expect him to do anything by calling after 5pm? Didn't I realize vendors closed at 5pm? Why didn't I call 2 hours before? Of course, he "COULD try calling them at 8:02am on Monday morning, but..." Basically, I was unreasonable for calling and asking for an update, I should have called before before 5pm if I expected anything at all to be done, and it would be a huge inconvience for him to do anything related to this order. Even though it was *his* store's fault for the mistake and lack of follow-through, even though we'd already spent several hundred dollars and were on a deadline with the availability of our electrician. When I explained all this to him, and said, he offered (in the same condescending tone) to install it for me. On Monday, I got the call that the light was in. I went back to pick it up before noon. Joe wanted to take it to my car, and that's when I told him how dissatisfied with his "customer service." I told him that all he had to do was apologize and tell me he would look into it first thing on Monday, instead of putting all the responsibility on me to know how his business works, and that I didn't appreciate his tone up to this point and so it would be best if we didn't interact further. He walked away with the classic, "Sorry YOU were offended." (Notice that it's my fault, again.) The lighting department person was shocked at overhearing this and apologized on his behalf. One of the other lighting people had pulled light bulbs for the fixture -- we assumed they were the same ones that we had used for a larger version of the same fixture bought before. Got the fixture home. Our electrician installed the fixture and bulbs. The bulbs were green and flickering. Not the same light bulbs at all, and definitely poor quality. I ended up making a third trip to Horton's to return those bulbs. Still not sure why different ones were selected since the store had a record of what we'd gotten the first time, whether it was another mistake or what. At this point, I was just done. A few too many mistakes and miscommunications which would have been merely annoying. Being cast as an unreasonable pest by a store manager when you ask for updates or accountability after an error does not get my return business. read more

I had visited the Hortons in Lincoln Park, where I live. That store is great, but I heard that the store in La Grange was much larger, so I rented a car and headed out to the burbs in my seemingly eternal quest for light fixtures. It was worth the drive, as I found the perfect items. I even managed to pick up a few Benjamin Moore sample pots while I was there. If your tastes veer toward the slightly more traditional, it might be worth a trip to La Grange, as well as to the Horton's outlet in Orland Park. The La Grange store has a much broader selection of traditional chandeliers than the Lincoln Park store does, as befits the neighborhood. It also has a bunch of huge fixtures, for those of you lucky enough to live in a house or apartment that can accommodate them. Orland Park also had several traditional chandeliers the day I was there, but it's more of a luck-of-the-draw kind of place. Now if I could just decide on my paint colors. . . read more

While I've only window shopped (way out of my price range), I've always seen friendly employees giving one-on-one guidance and help to other customers. I love that they stay on top of changing their inside and window decor to match the season. I enjoy visiting Horton's when I am looking for a special decorative item for my home. The have a wide selection of lamps, including a wide selection of stained glass lamps. Their lamps can be a bit pricy, but they run sales multiple times a year and I have gotten some great deals during their sale periods. I prefer not to interact with the lighting staff - some of the staff members have been quite rude to me in the past. I also enjoy visiting Horton's during the holidays to look for some unique accent pieces for the tree or other holiday decorations. It's somewhat of a holiday tradition in my family to pick out a special something for the house or tree at Christmas time. I've always received great customer service from the staff downstairs in the hardware section. I recently bought a grill and found the staff people to be very helpful and knowledgeable which helped ease the decision making process. A bit pricey but it's nice to have a local hardware store to pick up some small items quickly. Yes, you pay a bit more than at Home Depot, but you'll almost always be asked if they can help you as soon as you step in the place. No hunting for an associate like at Home Depot. Just purchased a high end grill from this Horton's Ace location. Upon delivery it was completely scratched and in unacceptable condition. With repeat calls to the store, only replacement parts have been offered. It's a shame to have to write this for a local place. My husband and I came in here one night just to browse and came out with a very nice lantern light fixture which now sits perfectly above our dining table. The customer service is friendly. Horton's Ace Hardware is great! You will be helped almost immediately upon your decent downstairs (where it is located). *There is an elevator available upon request for anyone in need. They have everything and more for the local DIY customer (well except for drywall and lumber). They cut keys by hand which is a lot more reliable than the automated machines you find at the big box stores. read more
