Hoshino Sushi punches above its weight, the food is genuinely good, the ambiance is okay. It has a bit of a beach vibe being a sushi spot near the beach, with some traditional aspects to it, decent. The service was okay, but my real gripe is with the hygiene. Some of my plates and placemats smelled like that smell you get from an old sponge way past its prime. This was very unpleasant and undercut the really good aspects of the restaurant. For that reason alone, I give it 3 stars. Fix this and it's easily a 4-5. read more

Overall, I had a great time at Hoshino. I think quite a bit and the food is always so good when it's really busy the sushi bar does get backed up and it could take some time. I unfortunately had to completely cancel a role that I had ordered with my dinner entrée because I had finished my entrée before the roll was complete. other than that it's always so good. I especially love the udon and the spicy rock shrimp. Hoshino also offers outdoor seating as well as indoor and both are great. overall a very nice place with great food and great service. read more

One block and half away from my house and for whatever reason never have eaten at this lovely restaurant! We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the very friendly staff! Nicely decorated inside ... BYOB which kept the cost down but all in all we loved what we ordered , maybe a bit on the smaller portion size as far as the pad Thai goes but still delicious! The server was sweet and friendly. The restaurant is decorated beautifully with a cool pergola inside. They also do a fun birthday bit so definitely ask about it on your bday! During Spring & Summer they open up Blue Sushi which is their Seasonal location on the North side of Lavallette. Our first time trying a sushi spot in lavallette and it did not disappoint! Everything we had was fresh and flavorful! Each sushi roll we had contained its own flavor palette which is so important with sushi because sometimes it all blends into one. We got to sit outside and it was beautiful. The service and servers are all very nice and friendly! Would definitely recommend and will be back for sure next time we visit! And the cucumber lemon water was a nice touch! :) read more

Such a great spot! The ambience is wonderful, service is great, and the food is great. All of what we ordered was amazing! We made a reservation and it is BYOB. If you have a bigger party, I would recommend making a reservation. The bigger tables filled up pretty quick around dinner time. For appetizers we got the edamame, pork gyoza, beef negimaki, Chinese broccoli, and cheesesteak rolls. The beef negimaki was by far our favorite, the rest was your typical food from sushi places. All very good! The best part was the entrees - the sushi was delicious. We ended up ordering a bunch of sushi to share to try it all and it was amazing. Our favorites were the lava roll and the Manhattan roll. We also got some regular rolls (spicy salmon and Philadelphia roll) that were good too! Overall, highly recommend this place. I was optimistic because the reviews were great- and maybe it's a different/better experience dining in rather than take out. The portions were small. Very small. My $18 tom yum soup was a small soup with 1/2 scallop, one small shrimp and some imitation crab meat. And the shrimp had that awful bleach taste. The rolls were small and pricey. We were going in for takeout and the most negative reviews were based on take out how the weight could be as long is an hour and a half we figured this was for lunch so it shouldn't be an hour and a half wait the food came in 20 minutes as promised so that was not an issue as many people had, the food was disappointing the spicy tuna the spicy salmon had no spice in it it was very bland. Not much else to say they did not give us chopsticks. You have to ask for them and the salad was not drained so in the bottom of my salad container. The lettuce was floating in water. read more

One of my favorite places to get sushi, not just DTS, but anywhere! Our favorites are the triple three and bamboo rolls, along w gyoza, but everything on the menu is delicious. The owners are lovely, and we have always had excellent service. Sometimes the kitchen can get a little backed up but it's well worth the wait. They have indoor and outdoor seating which is great to be able to choose and it is BYOB. Go to Hoshino (or Blue Sushi the sister restaurant in Normandy Beach) you won't be disappointed! read more
