My son had a track meet in Toms River, so we grabbed a bite afterwords on a weekday. Place was spacious, not over crowded. We were greeted by every server who works there. It's been quite a while since I've come in and sat down at Uminoya. Came in on a cold Sunday evening around 7:30pm, so we first ordered hot tea. Note that most Japanese places include hot tea, but here it's $3 each (unlimited refills). We also ordered clear soup to start, the ones you see at hibachi restaurants. It usually has two slices of rehydrated mushroom and some scallion. This one was particularly rich and tasted as if it had a bit of sesame oil. Different than what I'm used to, but definitely grounding when it's cold. We were the only ones there as a family was leaving. Several people came in and out for pickup orders. That being said, our sushi came out with little to no wait - max 10 minutes. Ordered these rolls: -cucumber -vegetable -spicy salmon -negahamachi (yellowtail & scallion) -Naruto -Christmas The cucumber and vegetable rolls are always a fresh bite, great palate cleansers, and quite affordable. Unfortunately I deduct a star as the rolls weren't sealed properly and were falling apart. Spicy salmon was super crunchy and used fatty salmon - no complaints. The negahamachi roll tasted as if there wasn't any scallion. I wish the scallion was a bit more prominent. Naruto roll had a good amount of sliced fish inside, and the cucumber is always refreshing. My only critique is that it came in 5 pieces vs 6 pieces, which would've been more shareable. Lastly the Christmas roll is the winner: you can really taste the smokiness in the tuna. The mango adds the right amount of sweetness and refreshing factor to the roll. To top it off, the crunchy tempura flakes and the 3 different tobiko creates so much texture and flavor all at once. Since we had a celebration, we ended dinner with a fried ice cream with vanilla inside. Lovely tempura shell, vanilla ice cream was still intact but melted quickly, and topped with whipped cream and drizzled chocolate. Ambiance was quiet and quaint in an Asian fashion. Servers seemed like they did not like their job, but could possibly be that it was close to closing time by the time we were leaving. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised that the bill before tax was $50. This place still maintains its affordability even through inflation. If looking for a sushi takeout / an affordable yet quality sushi dinner, I recommend Uminoya. read more

Uminoya is our go to sushi shop. Whether we eat in or takeout service is always as you would expect. Prices are on par or maybe even a bit cheaper than most sushi restaurants. Even their hibachi, teriyaki and warm dishes are solid. The interior is nice, appears clean and is a little lit on the dim side which I like. BYOB which is always a savings. Although I will say some were cut much too wide to fit in your mouth. It seemed either they rushed or don't know better re the size. My husband got seafood lomein and really was happy with it. He also got crispy calamari. The place was busy, it was a Saturday night about 7 pm. That's important to me when it comes to a sushi restaurant- so there's a quick turnaround w the fish, and it will hopefully be fresher. Solid place for sushi in the Toms River area. The service is quick and friendly. The food is pretty cheap and is really good for being in the Toms River area. The sushi is decent quality and the bento boxes are a really great deal. They give a lot of food for a very affordable price. The location is nice but can be very busy for parking. Every time I've came here for the last 2 years I have not been disappointed so far. Would definitely recommend and will be back. I gave this place a 2nd chance and nope... no good, at least for sushi. They make the rolls so big and loose you can't even pick them up without falling apart and you can't just pop them in your mouth so either way they are falling apart. In the Boston roll there was the smallest piece of shrimp ever and it was just a bunch of mushy iceberg lettuce ... pretty sure Boston rolls have Japanese mayo as well, at least any other time I've had a Boston roll. First of all, this is NOT a Japanese restaurant, it is Chinese posing as a Japanese place. I should have known when I walked in and saw all the Chinese decorations. If you're going to posture yourself as a Japanese place, at least try to look like it. *Disclaimer: I lived in Japan for 10 years. I can tell the difference when it's Chinese food disguised as Japanese food. I ordered the 3 roll lunch special with a Spicy Lobster Roll, The Rock'n Roll, and a Shrimp Tempura roll. Gas station sushi would have been a better choice. All 3 rolls were sub-par, and some of the worst sushi I've had in New Jersey. My wife ordered the Tempura Udon. The tempura was good, I will give them that, but the Udon was not really Japanese Udon, it was Chinese hot pot with Udon noodles in it. When you're expecting Japanese Udon and get hot pot stew, it's pretty disappointing. The servers were hit and miss. We had to hit a button on the wall of the booth twice before anyone even showed up to get our drink order, then the young girl that was serving our food acted as though we were wasting her time by being there. The other ladies were nicer, but they didn't come around very often. I don't often have buyer's remorse at a restaurant, but I did with this one. They have two sides by the front door which is one is phone order and other one is online order. They have no indoor and outdoor seating. Once you enter first door its blocked off on the second door. We ordered soft shell crab, dragon roll, shrimp tempura roll, and shumai. This is the order we always get when we go. Uminoya is like all-you-can-eat but better. They have the best prices for sushi that I've seen anywhere. All of their rolls are marked "half-price" at all times, so a $5 roll actually costs $2.50. The speciality rolls that cost $12-$15 anywhere else are insanely cheap here, most under $10. And the quality is much better than any all-you-can-eat place I've been to. Whatever you do, do NOT order/pay online. Uminoya uses a food ordering platform Tapthru. I ordered from Uminoya twice, and it's been over a year since my last order. In August, I was charged $9.99 for a subscription to Tapthru which I never agreed to. After being on hold for over 40 minutes, a Customer Service representative assured me the subscription would be canceled, and I wouldn't be charged again. However, I was charged $14.99 in December 2024. Despite multiple attempts to contact them via phone, email, and Facebook, I received no response. I disputed the charge with my credit card and was credited. In January 2025, I was charged another $14.99, and again in April 2025. My subscription was supposed to be canceled 7 months ago, yet they continue to charge me. Tapthru has no customer service and seems to be a fraudulent company. The only way to stop the charges is to get a new credit card, which is a hassle due to my valid monthly automatic charges. Avoid Tapthru at all costs. read more
