That section alone will take you 1.5-2 hours. The last 5-6 miles are unpaved and combo with the narrow roads, with a small vehicle it can be difficult and most importantly nerve racking to navigate. It is not for the faint of heart. One guy who came in on an off road vehicle said to me "I can't believe you made it here" and another person I talked to on my last day said her mother freaked out so bad they were trying to find an alternate way home. There is a lake (obviously) and you can catch small bass. A man we talked to said there is trout earlier in the year when it is colder. There are no running toilets or showers so outhouse only. The yellow jackets are NO JOKE. I woke up the first morning and thought they were swarming my tent but no - they were swarming our table. I would say easily 30 yellow jackets at all times around our table until sunset and if I wanted to cook anything with meat, I'd just give up because the second I opened it, 30 bees would be all over it. Lastly, the spots are first come first serve and there are not many of them

We enjoyed the fact they had showers and restrooms. In the backside I don't like the reporter parties, and thankfully the port of potties definitely were kept clean. I went down to the lake early morning, there were no issues or concerns during our two day stay. Couldn't have selected a better first camping experience location. I like the fact that you can go to the store in the front of the lake area and get ice cream coffee or any other things that you may have forgotten. Just prepare to pay a little extra if you forgot items that they have. Ice cream and coffee are very reasonable

They were cleaned each morning. The lake was nice but very rocky. Water shoes are a necessity. They had a nice boat dock that also had rentals available. There is a very nice playground that even has a zipline. Tokens are required for the showers. The store is very well stocked with necessities and souvenirs. The hand scooped ice cream cones are yummy and affordable. Order a small because the scoops are the size of a grapefruit. The employees are very friendly

The town of Chester is about 10 miles away if you need a store for something. The campgrounds are close together. Which we don't really like. Each has a fire ring and grill to cook on. It wasn't too far from the restrooms and trash either. The drinking water was just across from us and compared to a state park or national park campground, it was pretty quiet. There is a paved hiking trail to Lake Almanor just across the entrance from the South Campground. On an early morning, I took a jog with my 1-year-old while the others were still snoozing and the weather was just perfect at 8:30 AM. Although I found that even for early July, it can get a bit cold in the early morning (1 AM-8 AM) in the tent. So pack extra blankets. There are no showers here, so you will have to find them somewhere else. Overall, this is a great spot to camp if you plan to go to Mount Lassen National Park or surrounding areas. There is a lot of space for the whole family at your campsite.

I was a local kid who worked my summer jobs cleaning cabins, then at the pool snack bar and then, finally, at the coveted lifeguard position at the two pools. All the "city kids" would come every summer and I had my "summer friends" when I wasn't in school. It was magical. I now live in San Diego and my children can't understand that magic so I try to compare it to movie, "Dirty Dancing." They are jealous. I don't blame them; Pine Grove in the 1980s was something out of a movie. Anyone who was there has endless stories about the place. I read someone on here say the new owners keep the local "riff raff" out... I don't know what that means but back when I was a local kid working there, the city kids and local kids loved meeting every summer. I hope that kind of kindness isn't lost on this generation.

The reviews were sparse and mixed but the space looked beautiful online. I reached out directly by email to Joe, describing the type of event I wanted, and he was very responsive and helpful and generous. First of all, if you read nothing else, I have to rave about the infrastructure. Joe and the folks over there are really bright, mindful, and hardworking - and you can see from what they're building. The bathroom/shower complex near the campground is new and well built. A stone's throw away, the pool area is beautiful and clean, with a majestic lawn to run around on and great facilities. We rented the Mooncat Tiny House and the Glamping Tent and they are both cute, well proportioned, and well designed. The owners have beautiful things and great taste - we found the kitchen stocked with Japanese knives and Staub & Le Creuset cookware. They've cleverly set up mesh WiFi around the whole area that, while not reliable enough for Zoom calls, is impressive. I got a chuckle when a friend, sitting on a stump, asked me for the WiFi password. Even the structures that aren't new are taken care of; things are lived in and not luxury, but nothing is dilapidated. When I first got there, it took some time to get my bearings. The property is rather large (we never really did explore the east half of it) and there are a lot of structures, some inhabited and some available to rent. Folks of all stripes seem to live there at all times of year. I think the thing that first threw me off is you're never TRULY out of eyesight or earshot from someone, despite the woodsy environ. There's often the odd person or small group sitting on a porch, working on a project, hanging by the pool, or walking a dog - it's more like an unstructured neighborhood in the woods than a secluded campground. I soon met Joe and found him to be a helpful and well-meaning fellow. In time, folks in my group struck up conversations with the other folks around. Noah and one of the kids came to clean out the glamping tent for us and were very welcoming as well. Everyone was friendly and I came to realize this was a community of folks who had come here - perhaps some temporarily - to get away from the outside world and find some time and space for themselves. The attitude as I see it was rather healthy and positive. People there seem to be generous of mind and spirit. I was nervous that our group - 30-somethings drinking and floating in the pool, yelling and cursing at one another as we played games like spikeball and cornhole - would be an unwelcome nuisance, but the residents were really kind, accepting, and even fascinated by our antics. I would recommend Pine Grove highly to anyone, but mostly I think I've found a gem that I hope is around for years to come. I think when we all have young kids and want a place to spend a quiet weekend where they can explore, this will be our oasis. If you're reading this, thanks for being such great hosts, Joe, Noah, & everyone!
