When residents become oh-so proud about how good a NY bagel is, I'd like to assume Hot Bagels is what they have in mind. It's plain. There's no attempt at decoration, a creative name, or any real flair because it's been around a couple generations and everyone they need to sell to knows who they are. Just walk up and forcefully squeeze your way in. There is minimal space, as it's more of a distribution center with a foyer to order. Expect uncomfortable stares from locals. Order an everything bagel with cream cheese. Very crunchy...almost too well done for me, but still very good. You can't go wrong with breadsticks as well. Loaded with sesame, these come out piping hot. Eating them plain does not appeal to me, but I can tell these are high quality as well. Each item was under two bucks, which is insane considering the cost of food virtually everywhere else. I suppose that the volume they churn out allows such a steal. I don't think there's any reason most people will find themselves on this block, but if you pass through, trust you've found a clandestine spot that won't disappoint. read more

This was my first NY bagel. I found myself in a neighborhood packed with dudes in long black coats and wide hats and thought, "With this many Jews I gotta get myself a bagel!" The place is tiny. You shoehorn your way in and stand shoulder to shoulder with a half dozen of your closest sidelocked friends. Delicious bread stick, bagels and tuna spread. The bagels were still warm when handed to me. It's true that they don't care about service (-1 star). There is not even a price list in store. If you are curious, bagel is $0.5, tuna sandwich is $2.5, bread stick is $1, bagel chips is $2 (yes, in 2022). I didn't buy, but I think bagel and cream cheese is $1.5. Will definitely revisit. Take whatever bagel store ideas you may have, and set them on a shelf, temporarily.. This bagel shop is more like a commercial bagel joint that retail, over the typical bagel shop you may be used to.. I'd say over 90% of the shop is kitchen area with a small area in front to wait for your items. With most signage in Hebrew, and every other customer in the shop of the faith, I'm assuming jewish religious customary dietary practices are followed here, limiting the offerings. Best I could estimate for what was available here was Everything, Onion, and Plain bagels. As for toppings, I saw cream cheese, butter, tuna salad, egg salad, and lox.. Did not notice any coffee service, just a retail cooler with bottled drinks. All this being said, the bagels are good, and cheap! 6 bagels, a coffee roll, $5. The bagels aren't the huge, bloated, doughy varieties, commonly found today but smaller, reasonable proportioned bagels that are crusty, a bit chewy, bit firm.. A traditional Jewish bagel. My office smells. My office smells and I don't care. I work directly above this crusty little bagel shop and my office smells of fresh bagels every morning. 13th Ave Bagel has one of the best bagels in the 5 boroughs, period. A smaller bagel, with a higher crust to innards ratio than most bagel shops of today. A bigger bagel is NOT a better bagel! There is rarely a time throughout the day when the queue subsides, but don't worry....the two old ladies serving the magic are professionals. Just have your order/money ready when you reach the front as a courtesy for the people behind you. There is nothing in this shop that is over $2. Seriously. When the bagels are hot, this place is to die for. When they're not, the bagels here are kindof underwhelming. The plain bagels with nothing on them taste like pretzls, thats a good thing. It's .50 a bagel, $1.25 for a bagel with cream cheese, tuna fish (heavy on the mayo) or egg salad, and for $2 they overstuff the fillings. They also throw pickles, lox spread and hot sauce on the bagels if you ask (pickles are an extra quarter). Its hard to find another bagel this cheap anywhere else. They also make some pastries, and sell bagel chips - all pretty good as well. The place is super busy on Sundays, and there's often a long obnoxious line of people. The people working there are very nice, if you're nice to them - too bad so many customers are picky. Also, the bagels are a little small, but for the price, totally worth it. read more

I had no idea this place had such a long name. The only thing it says in the front is, so appropriately: HOT BAGELS. Honestly, the only time I'm okay with being on 13th Avenue is Saturday afternoon. No traffic, no shoppers, no hubbub, exhale...it's quiet. So if I'm to brave this insane stretch of Borough Park at any other point, it's going to have to be for something good. These bagels are one of those things. They're not my absolute favorite bagel in the city, and they're not like the fat, doughy ones most of us are used to, but they are really quite good. Small, crusty, hot, YUM. You'll have to walk through crowded sidewalks, or you'll have to double park. Those two little ladies might ignore you a little, or you might not understand each other. Just figure out a way to get a dozen, then get home and enjoy them. They're the best in Borough Park, for sure. read more

It seems that they shut off the fridge at night, after all nobody is there at night. The service still sucks big time. It's not your typical bagel store. It looks like a commercial bagel co who also serve retail and they do have pretty good bagels, and the coffee is not bad. The workers are all foreign and can barely understand what you order. They have no idea how to wrap a sandwich and the cofee is served is crappy paper cups. I break the Atkins diet for these bagels. Recently went to a wedding in Borough Park and had to stop in for these bagels. They are absolutely the best. Quite possibly the WORST bagel I've ever had in NY, and as a native Brooklynite, I've had many bagels in my lifetime. "Hot Bagels" is misleading. The bagels were sitting on the side counter in the open. I asked if it could be toasted. That was not an option! There's only one type of cream cheese. What bagel shop ANYWHERE has only plain cream cheese?!? Neither of the ladies in the store were friendly or welcoming. The cashier tried to short me on my change. When I did get the bagel and bit into it, it was just, bleh. I got an everything bagel. There was NO flavor to the entire sandwich. Everything is supposed to have the most flavor. I didn't know it was possible to not have any taste from an everything! I see why it's only $1.50. I'll do better going to the Jewish grocery store up the street from me and buying a bag of mezonot or hamotzi bagels and any flavor cream cheese that I want and be more satisfied.
