Hot Breads is an Indian forward bakery, with a lot more than just bakery items, such as biryani and dosa, as two examples. Of bakery items there is an abundance. I enjoy well prepared samosas, which is the only item I tried. Their version is a traditional potato and pea filled version. Thoroughly enjoyable. read more

The 4 stars are purely for their breads and biryani. Their breads (including buns, puffs, and croissants) are genuinely pretty good - it's in their name, after all. We usually get pav from here when making pav bhaji at home. If you want pav, call ahead because they make limited quantities and may run out. But that way at least you know the pav is fresh. The goat biryani is also excellent - probably the best in the Boston area. We've also tried the dosa, dabeli, and some pastry and chaat items here but these are not their core competency. My best advice would be to avoid getting anything else beyond breads and biryani; you'd only be setting yourself up for disappointment. read more

The place always surprises me with they food. I agree its nit the neatest and cleanest Indian restaurants around, but the taste has never disappointed mr in two years now and things they specialize in like the goat crossaint and other bakery items is what makes them really unique and special. Their 8.99 lunch buffet is an absolute steal, coz its not exorbitant like other. Just 10-12 things and everything tastes good, most of the times. Now coming to the food, the chicken biryani is priced at 9.99$ and it is definitely on par. The pastries are fresh and good. My personnel favorites are mixed fruit, pine-apple and strawberry. I have tried their samosa chat, vada pav, aloo tikki chat, pav-bhaaji. Pav-bhaaji disappointed me a bit but the rest were excellent. Not to mention i never miss their andhra spicy dosa. 3.5 stars to be exact. I have to mention. It's got its momentum to reach 4 stars. I am in a mission - Dragon Ball Z like mission where Goku and his crews aimlessly wondering around with very little clues to find 7 Dragon Balls. My dragon ball is "Kati roll" - Indian taco(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kati_roll). I've seen one in NYC but I am hoping to find one in Boston area. Having post a thread to ask if any fellow Yelpers having seen ones, I've got a few tips via PM(instead of replying to the thread). And this "Hot Breads" in Woburn was included in one of tips I received. I called ahead to ask if they have Kati rolls. They had no clue what I was talking about. But having seen "rolls" in their menu, my denial of nonexistence of Kati rolls remained strong. Hence I went on the journey. The shop is located in the heart of downtown Woburn. From outside, it appears to be a plain bakery because of fake wedding cakes displayed by the window. As you entered, you will see series of pastry. It's not as big as Mike's Pastry in N. End. However, it did reminded me of it. Also, there was a small buffet bar on the side. Selections aren't so big. But this shop's identity is "bakery". You shouldn't be complaining. You should regard this as a "bonus". Customer service? Well.. not so great. But I was not offended. This is the place where you have to keep tackling to get used to their protocol. I do have a few places elsewhere where I feel superior to other unfamiliar customers and I could order things in abbreviated or encrypted lingo that is particular to those shops. And this place seems to be one of them. Therefore, I felt rushed to pick items. But I kept my objective clear - Kati rolls. So I asked for "rolls" and biryani(Indian fried rice). The "roll" wasn't a Kati roll. It was a bread, not a taco. It almost looked like a coffee roll. I was disappointed but it was not their fault. It was my denial that made a trip to this place. And I ate a "chicken curry roll" as I was driving back. It was delicious. It would've been so awesome if I ate when it was warm. It had a croissant texture and it had very flavorful curry and chicken meat inside. Biryani? Not so great. It had too many bones instead of meat. But I did get what I paid for. Mostly biryani costs at least $11 anywhere. But this one must have cost $7 at the most because I paid $10 for both the roll and biryani. I've eaten a cheap, crappy, bone bonanza biryani like this one from shitty Indian joint in Jackson Heights in Queens NY which is "Little India". Is a place worth driving all the way from Weymouth to Woburn. My friend thought so and I had my fingers crossed. Food - Got the wada paav for appetizers. Looked delicious but had too much massala in it. I had to chuck half of it. We got the biryani for the table. And it was worth the drive. Guys, this is AUTHENTIC and SINCERE Indian food! I have been to many of the other Indian restaurants, such as Rani, Ghazal, Mela, Indian Dhaba, Desi Dhaba, Curry House on Coolidge Corner, Mumbai Chopstix, Dosai Factory, etc., and this is the absolute best! I just went today with a friend, and we're both Indian. I'm the epicurean between the two of us as well as an excellent cook. She ordered the Andra (sic - supposed to be "Andhra") Dosa, and I had a chili and onion uttapam. Oh my goodness, this was so authentic and nice! I also had 2 servings of tea/chai, and they made that perfectly as well. Finally, we also had 3 biscuits - all of different flavors. They were very similar to Danish pastries, and they were great over all. They go perfectly with tea. The owner is Vijay Yalamanchili, and coincidentally, there is an Indo-American running for Congress in Ohio as a Democrat who is named Surya Yalamanchili, and on the merits of Surya's surname, I'm voting for him....except that I live in Boston. Guys, the experience of eating here is remarkably as Indian as it gets -for better or worse. I mean, my table wasn't so clean, which is OK because my utensils were. The service was very nice, and the people were hospitable, big-hearted, just like what you get in India. Just like India, they misspell all the English words on their menu, and they have a shrine inside the building honoring Hindu gods and saints, which I think is cool, even though I'm not Hindu. Again, very authentic. This is one of my all-time favorite restaurants, and next time, I'm eating some non-veg out there, and I'm a new vegetarian. Finally, two people can share one dish. I came here on the recommendation of a friend. This review is for the bakery portion only. I got a box of cookies and they were all pretty good. The problem was that aside from the jeera, they all tasted the same with different nuts on top (not that that's a bad thing). It would have been nice if the man behind the counter pointed out that one type of cookie had hot spice in it. Thankfully, I could smell the spice before I took a bite. From the Outside it looks like some random Bakery, down to the faux Wedding Cake in the Window. I walked in and one single solitary tear rolled down my cheek. I smelled Garam Masala. I was home. This is the only place I've found in town so far that isn't afraid to include Flavor when cooking. When the lovely gentleman behind the counter asked how spicy I wanted my food it took everything thing I am to not to reach across the counter and kiss him like we were auditioning for Titanic Part 2: Cruise Control. "Hot Breads" is totally not what you'd expect. I'd driven by this place many times without a second glance, as I'd assumed that it was a bog-standard Bread bakery. How wrong I was. If it weren't for a co-worker's recommendation, I'd have never discovered this gem of a place. Upon entering, you're greeted with a standard cake display counter, but the real gems to be had here are not up front - no, they're behind the counter and in the display case to the left. Here you'll find all manner of delicious Indian goodies, and some things which I'd never seen before. Croissants stuffed with keema and Tikka Masala? Brilliant! And incredibly yummy! I shared my findings with a few of my Bostonian friends, and I undertook an occasional part-time keema-croissant delivery service. They're that good! They also have other Indian dishes - sadly, I'm just not familiar enough with Indian cuisine to have made educated decisions on what to order there. Suffice to say, the food there is good, and tasty, especially for the more adventurous. Food: Excellent food, some twists on some familiar themes. A bit greasy at times - but they're croissants, so you've got to kind of expect tha. Value: Good value. Tasty food for a reasonable price. Ambiance: It's just a bakery counter with a few tables for you to stand-and-eat at. They have a small counter with some flatware and a water pitcher too. Functional and relatively clean. Never take late evening takeout of birayani from them, specifically on sunday night. We were returning back home on sunday night after long travel and thought of doing take away from hot breads woburn. When i called them, they said that I can only get the birayani in take away. When i reached at shop, they had ice cold box of birayani ready. When i asked the guy why birayani is nit hot, he explained me that they just kept it in fridge. I asked about the dum, he told me that they prepare the rice and put dum only once in a day. I was surprised at that response, but thought may be thats how it is.
